I have one and it seems it is really underpowered, as if I put a bit of pressure on the tool being sharpened the wheel nearly comes to a halt. I've tried adjusting the friction wheel with no success. Is there any way I can check that its working at the correct power?

I'm not sure about the power, but when I started i had this problem, i dressed the wheel and cut very well after that

About using bench grinder, is that not a risk it’s to rough and fast and risking to get too hot and losing the hardening?

Yes absolutely, so you have to go easy and use a pot of water, and yes can be a bit rough, but for getting the grinding angle then using a bench stone will get very good results

Too slow for my taste. I bought a course pink, Norton wheel several years back for my 1750 rpm bench grinder. Runs cool enough where I rarely have to dip in water before I get a new edge.
