  • This year, Brazilian democracy -- the fourth-largest in the world -- was pushed to the brink of crisis, as far-right President Jair Bolsonaro convinced his base of heavily armed, God-fearing supporters (adding up to tens of millions of people) that the election was stolen. VICE News investigates how Bolsonaro, borrowing from Donald Trump and the US culture wars, built a lasting right-wing movement that will define Brazilian politics for years to come.

Unfortunately, here in Brazil, we have a Lot of liers and cowards like u who agree with disarmament policies while The bandits always were armed and It Will continue The same.

@@driftaddictbr Interesting and unnoticed fact. Good posting.
Problem is, the whole country has gone bananas about my candidate, your candidate. And people are not looking for a discourse through arguing over policies and issues. The debate, nowadays, goes around conspiracy theories, rather than accomplishments and policies. Having a conversation with these mooks is a complete waste of time. Fear and hysteria is the currency of conversation nowadays. Blame it , again, upon our educational system.
Now, I am not sure I've heard or seen University Students to go at bat for the de-funding, which, on other times, would be the first thing to happen, as so it did throughout the 60's and later into the 80's. At this time, Students are oddly and out of character silent.
Maybe, maybe, because a lot of the enrollment in higher education nowadays has shifted towards Diploma Mills, and away from Public Universities and the few private ones , and those new places do not have the track record in terms of producing critical thinking. That's my 5 cents, whether I am wrong or right.
      Now, | get it.....
the traditional upper middle and upper class lost money under Lula's years,at the expense of social programs entitlements, but by and large, unbeknownst to the group at large, at the expense of globalization. Winners and losers.
So a lot of people who did get the shaft where spouting around about how crooked Lula and his cronies where. And they might be right, only if they forget others prior to him just did the same. Clean nose career politicians in Brazil, never to happen. This ain't Scandinavian country, or Netherlands, or Germany.
Now, looking at the other side, the workingman, the salt of the earth types, they actually stood to gain through those years. Their kids went to college, they could travel, some of them actually got to enroll in post graduate studies abroad, their parents could afford to buy a home ( well, that's before prices started to surge ), there are more people driving a car on the roads ( a credit towards we having more automakers plants than ever before). And as a whole, free national health care actually improved as results of social liberal policies.
Bolsonaro's Congress ( not himself alone ), did away with a lot of regulations that did not make any sense, which in a way, benefited and will further improve the climate for he business class, from the small business up to corporations. That should boost employment opportunities. Giving his credit where it is due, a lot of regulations that deadlocked investments were busted away. So kudos for him.
But again, it's always a zero sum game, you get something at the expense of someone else. Some of his policies, as you pointed correctly, came at expense of taking from the poor.
Without staking hopes on a Savior ( which is what most Brazilians normally do, always waiting for the Government to do their bidding as opposed to take problems on their own hands ), let;s hope that Lula's trials, highs and lows, have seasoned him to actually govern under consensus. He is into the age, but that should not prevent him to be a good leader.

The traditional Brazilian media earned billions of $ reais during the left government to remain silent!! Bolsonaro government was massacred for 4 years, every day 24 hours a day. Bolsonaro cut media funding! Instead of paying billions to the media, he preferred to invest in the most needy Brazilians, he did great works, he did a lot of things that the traditional media did not show.! See what Los Angeles is like! I was there not long ago, it's turning into Tijuana! No jobs, stealing and normal, people living on the streets and a lot of people leaving California. We just want freedom to work and be happy! We do not want this new world order commanded by China! The American people need to wake up to not become slaves to the Chinese.

I am Brazilian and I can say: The majority of Bolsonaro voters are good-natured families, good citizens, while PT supporters are mostly angry evil extreme leftist militants, who attack those who do not support Lula, persecute conservatives in universities with cancellations and threats etc.
Bolsonaro supporters are protesting in the streets because of the partial and unfair way that the Brazilian Supreme Court has conducted the elections, censoring politicians and Bolsonaro supporters, violating the freedom of expression guaranteed in the Constitution, while not taking the same measures with the PT allies. (It is worth noting that most of the judges of the Court were placed by Lula and Dilma and they are from the extreme left and in the last 04 years of the Bolsonaro government they have been disobeying the Constitution with authoritarian measures and constantly intervening in the Executive and Legislative powers to sabotage the government).
It was these same judges who overturned the sentences of the 10 cases in which Lula was convicted of corruption, a process in which LUla's corruptions were proven, just so that he could run with Bolsonaro for the presidency.

The fact is that Brazil is a very broken and confused country. It´s a country that is almost 50/50 white/black + brown population (with many other "races" and mixes in the middle, but not the majority), but is still very racist systemically, especially towards indigenous people. It´s also a country of religious people, but a key religious group here is the evangelicism (the evangelics), they are now about 1/3 of the country (in terms of population) and they are hugely influencial in politics. The churches were used as political podiums for Bolsonaro (and calling Lula satanic/against religon, that he would close down churches...). They are very present in congress, etc. Brazil has huge social economic problems, as well as (because of it and curruption) low level public education (generally speaking), so it´s hard for people to understand what is going on, and properly reflect upon what they are being told and quite frequently just go along with what they were sent on whatsApp or what the pastor of their church told them to do, without looking much into it (like in Lula´s prison case)... Which is why we see things such as rogue police officers dealing in traffic and controlling regions, implementing what they believe to be good morals, acting without fear and thiking it´s the right thing: because to them it is. They 100% belive in what they are told, in this case also in Bolsonaro, and in themselves (because if he´s wrong, then I´m also wrong, which is "impossible"). Everything and everyone here is a pawn, wants to use others as pawns and everyone is confused, It´s crystal clear, especially when you hear people here talking about Lula being a "communist" or when they talk about socialism (without even knowing how to define it), and the first thing that comes to their mind is Venezuela, etc (although that is mostly also because of strong right wing propaganda, very much like in the US). We´ve had for over a decade a left leaning government in power, and we´ve never been close to becoming a "Venezuela". Private companies grew like mad during Lula´s government. The closest we´ve ever come to become "a Venezuela" was during this government. A very authoritarian, biggoted, science denying, nature destroying, anti-globalism, right wing government. And my final and favorite take is that "they" are "teaching ideologies" to children in school. The biggest ideology anywhere, especially in Brazil, is religion itself. Teaching kids since young to believe in dogmatic ideas, never really criticizing/questioning it nor the "men of god" in the churches, amongst many other things... Good thing that we still keep religion out of school (although many will claim that it´s because God isn´t in schools that bad things happen, but that´s a story for another time).

Lula brought up the country just to have his corruption bring it down again in our economic collapse, in 2014.
