Guns, God, and Democracy in Brazil

- This year, Brazilian democracy -- the fourth-largest in the world -- was pushed to the brink of crisis, as far-right President Jair Bolsonaro convinced his base of heavily armed, God-fearing supporters (adding up to tens of millions of people) that the election was stolen. VICE News investigates how Bolsonaro, borrowing from Donald Trump and the US culture wars, built a lasting right-wing movement that will define Brazilian politics for years to come.

Gangster cops against corruption. This is pretty much brazilian moralism in a nutshell.
Ironic , aint it?
We live in The country of 70k murders per year. Curiosly, because of bolsonaro's government and because of his policy by facilitacion of buying guns, those numbers are getting small. Unfortunately, here in Brazil, we have a Lot of liers and cowards like u who agree with disarmament policies while The bandits always were armed and It Will continue The same.
What about drug traffickers supporting lula?
I wonder if that's i the cards for The US.
EXACTLY what I just commented above!
“If he wins its fair, if he loses its corrupt!” Argument is getting old.
Beyond old...and childish, irrational, absurd, and dangerous. How anyone can say that with a straight face is beyond me. This is how democracies die.
Same Trump attitude however Brazilians showed him the way out.

When you take the map of the city of Rio with the neighborhoods/districts controlled by these militias highlighted and then you take a map showing which districts gave victory to Bolsonaro they overlap almost perfectly. These are the same people talking about the guarantee of a free vote and that they are protesting electoral fraud...

As long as "beliefs" and "gut feelings" are all that matter to people, they'll continue to make decisions based on such idiocies (in lieu of facts and truth). The resemblance between the presidents, the ideology, the tactics, the evangelical Christo-Fascists and even the speech is unquestionable... Brazil is also the only country apart from the US were the Evangelicals have so much power... And on the latest decade the Brazilian Evangelical Sects are expanding their indoctrination to the Portuguese speaking African countries like Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape-Vert... They use the peoples ignorance in their favor in order to establish a huge number of followers/ believers. Later they grab influence among the political elites in order to establish a possibility to get their people into the country politics, They have tried the same in my country Portugal... That is where Teacher's Unions came into place. I am dead sure they backed Lula. Anyhow, someone has to deliver.
That's citizen politics at grass root levels. The business class rounded up employees to vote on the Boss' candidate, the Unions made sure their core voted on the other guy.
Cutting the education's funds: that's what he did in order to conquer the voters from Minas Gerais, the second largest electorate in the country and also the state with the highest number of public universities. That's stupidity on another level, right?!
Brazil couldn't stand any more of this poor decision making, which's been putting the economy, the education and pretty much all aspects of our lives at stake.
@@driftaddictbr Interesting and unnoticed fact. Good posting.
Problem is, the whole country has gone bananas about my candidate, your candidate. And people are not looking for a discourse through arguing over policies and issues. The debate, nowadays, goes around conspiracy theories, rather than accomplishments and policies. Having a conversation with these mooks is a complete waste of time. Fear and hysteria is the currency of conversation nowadays. Blame it , again, upon our educational system.
Now, I am not sure I've heard or seen University Students to go at bat for the de-funding, which, on other times, would be the first thing to happen, as so it did throughout the 60's and later into the 80's. At this time, Students are oddly and out of character silent.
Maybe, maybe, because a lot of the enrollment in higher education nowadays has shifted towards Diploma Mills, and away from Public Universities and the few private ones , and those new places do not have the track record in terms of producing critical thinking. That's my 5 cents, whether I am wrong or right.
Now, | get it.....
the traditional upper middle and upper class lost money under Lula's years,at the expense of social programs entitlements, but by and large, unbeknownst to the group at large, at the expense of globalization. Winners and losers.
So a lot of people who did get the shaft where spouting around about how crooked Lula and his cronies where. And they might be right, only if they forget others prior to him just did the same. Clean nose career politicians in Brazil, never to happen. This ain't Scandinavian country, or Netherlands, or Germany.
Now, looking at the other side, the workingman, the salt of the earth types, they actually stood to gain through those years. Their kids went to college, they could travel, some of them actually got to enroll in post graduate studies abroad, their parents could afford to buy a home ( well, that's before prices started to surge ), there are more people driving a car on the roads ( a credit towards we having more automakers plants than ever before). And as a whole, free national health care actually improved as results of social liberal policies.
Bolsonaro's Congress ( not himself alone ), did away with a lot of regulations that did not make any sense, which in a way, benefited and will further improve the climate for he business class, from the small business up to corporations. That should boost employment opportunities. Giving his credit where it is due, a lot of regulations that deadlocked investments were busted away. So kudos for him.
But again, it's always a zero sum game, you get something at the expense of someone else. Some of his policies, as you pointed correctly, came at expense of taking from the poor.
Without staking hopes on a Savior ( which is what most Brazilians normally do, always waiting for the Government to do their bidding as opposed to take problems on their own hands ), let;s hope that Lula's trials, highs and lows, have seasoned him to actually govern under consensus. He is into the age, but that should not prevent him to be a good leader.

This country will never change. We have too many people who complain "what if" without ever stopping to think and commit.
Corruption in Brazil is so bad because things such as nepotism, exploitation and classism run rampant. To do literally anything in Brazil you need a "jeitinho".
Brazil is the Portugal of the Tropics... The level of similarities doesn't end on the language... Here in Portugal we suffer from loads of the same problems... Corruption and nepotism on the state machine and politics and yes... here the "Jeitinho" is called "cunha" and is also an important part of our society...
ehhh man america is pretty bad to so dont worry, just get to a scando country
What's that mean
@@kylegray3838 America is nowhere near that bad. We live like literal kings here compared to over there. Dont kid yourself or them.
And you will be talking to the wilderness for years to come.
Brazil skipped the industrial revolution, and never got quite to the post industrial revolution.

The problem with todays politics is that people tend to make it their ENTIRE personality. In similar fashion to a fanatic supporting their favorite sports team. This goes for all political ideologies.
Talking to militia men isn't hard in Rio, you can talk to them at a local bar, it's nothing much

The fact is that Brazil is a very broken and confused country. It´s a country that is almost 50/50 white/black + brown population (with many other "races" and mixes in the middle, but not the majority), but is still very racist systemically, especially towards indigenous people. It´s also a country of religious people, but a key religious group here is the evangelicism (the evangelics), they are now about 1/3 of the country (in terms of population) and they are hugely influencial in politics. The churches were used as political podiums for Bolsonaro (and calling Lula satanic/against religon, that he would close down churches...). They are very present in congress, etc. Brazil has huge social economic problems, as well as (because of it and curruption) low level public education (generally speaking), so it´s hard for people to understand what is going on, and properly reflect upon what they are being told and quite frequently just go along with what they were sent on whatsApp or what the pastor of their church told them to do, without looking much into it (like in Lula´s prison case)... Which is why we see things such as rogue police officers dealing in traffic and controlling regions, implementing what they believe to be good morals, acting without fear and thiking it´s the right thing: because to them it is. They 100% belive in what they are told, in this case also in Bolsonaro, and in themselves (because if he´s wrong, then I´m also wrong, which is "impossible"). Everything and everyone here is a pawn, wants to use others as pawns and everyone is confused, It´s crystal clear, especially when you hear people here talking about Lula being a "communist" or when they talk about socialism (without even knowing how to define it), and the first thing that comes to their mind is Venezuela, etc (although that is mostly also because of strong right wing propaganda, very much like in the US). We´ve had for over a decade a left leaning government in power, and we´ve never been close to becoming a "Venezuela". Private companies grew like mad during Lula´s government. The closest we´ve ever come to become "a Venezuela" was during this government. A very authoritarian, biggoted, science denying, nature destroying, anti-globalism, right wing government. And my final and favorite take is that "they" are "teaching ideologies" to children in school. The biggest ideology anywhere, especially in Brazil, is religion itself. Teaching kids since young to believe in dogmatic ideas, never really criticizing/questioning it nor the "men of god" in the churches, amongst many other things... Good thing that we still keep religion out of school (although many will claim that it´s because God isn´t in schools that bad things happen, but that´s a story for another time).
This is similar to the way "milicias" (cops trying to be off duty vigilants that became basically mobsters) were formed in the 80's in Brazil..
It's so sad to see a country with such potential going so bad.

It's like they're completely oblivious to the idea that normal, ordinary people can get sick of their constant peevish scolding, and just want them out of power.
I’ve noticed that with our elections in Brazil and then the way republicans are reacting to the “red wave” never arriving. they keep talking about it being the fault of people who live in the northeast of Brazil, or that young voters and single women are the issue for republicans, without noticing that maybe just maybe not even right leaning people can stand the crazy a second longer

The thing is that ever since the 70's a whole flock of US Evangelical ideology came to evangelize people. Thus so far, the mess was done, I say that because I came out of this awful cult-like ideology extremism that people call "Evangelicalism".

@@infosrelevantes7146 robbing from the rich to give to the poor is absolutely good, given the extreme wealth inequalities. What's more important, having food or a mega-yacht? And how do you think the rich got so rich, besides their own robbery?
@@PaulSandersonYup Man, If someoone got rich illegaly, he is a criminal and should be charged for this. If one got rich by working he deserves every singles dollar to buy whatever he wants to. Robbery is never acceptable.
If a black person starts selling hot dog and grow his business and becomes wealthy by his hard work, does he deserves to be robbed?
@@infosrelevantes7146 ok fine, you're right and I'm wrong. It's better for people to starve in the streets than for taxes to be raised on the insanely wealthy. Baiiiii.
Well he didn’t steal from the rich to give to the poor. The money went to corrupt politicians and left leaning donors. It’s the worst corruption scheme in modern history. Trillions of dollars were wrongfully diverted and many of our largest corporations went broke. Lula brought up the country just to have his corruption bring it down again in our economic collapse, in 2014.
Most in Brasil are not against a left leaning candidate, but to bring back a felon who broke the country is unacceptable for them.
The story is much more complex than that, but it’s the sad reality of polarization.
This is outrageous, such strategies as "If i lose they committed a fraud" are dangerous and are actually silencing the real situation in authoritarian countries especially when used unjustified and when politicians are praised as in a religion.
Vice translator, it is a 12 gauge not a 12 caliber!
I have yet to see when being lenient with guns and allowing everyone and their mother have a gun has it worked in a positive way. I live in America and it literally feels like everyday someone is shooting somebody dead for nothing.
Those shootings are done by criminals, with stolen guns, against civilians who don't have guns, no one talks about self defence shootings, with a armed civilian who successfully stops theft, murder, mass shootings, and rapes.

During these times of division, I’m really very thankful to be living in a country, where political divisions such as this one cannot exist. Switzerland made a good job to adopt a federal all party democracy, where all major political parties are part of the government.
Then you live in a voluntary dictatorship?
I'm brazilian and I'm happy seeing this division because before Bolsonaro we were only a great criminal syndicate sharing the power: the far-left (PT) and the left (PSDB).
During the "Lava Jato Operation", this syndicate broke and now we can resist, but unfortunately the Supreme Court of Brasil is plenty of minions of this gang and frauded and ignored lots of rules, like we see in the communist dictatorships in Latin America like Venezuela.
The main thing I admire in your country is the liberty of use weapons. Keep this because even in USA this right has been stolen.
While that's good (for you), i hope people understand that this instability and division also hurts Switzerland and the whole world, especially on long-term. The environmental impact caused by Bolsonaro's policies hurt the whole world, besides other things like poverty and forced migration, not too different than afican/ME refugees escaping to europe and causing social/economic issues.
This is not 1800 anymore, 1 country getting screwed somewhere certainly impacts you, especially when they are as big as Brazil.
