  • Inspired by the NRA, pro-gun activists in Brazil became a political force under Bolsonaro. Gun ownership grew sixfold since 2018, and some of those weapons are already ending up in crime scenes. VICE News goes inside a movement whose impacts will last for generations.

These protesters are largely from the party of the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who dressed up as if they were protesters in defense of the former president, Jair Messias Bolsonaro.
There are footages that show ministers of the current government receiving these vandals, as well as records of ministers dismissing the local police a few hours before the event.

I am born and raised in Rio de janeiro, and lived my whole life very close to many favelas. This is just a naïve notion. Right now the criminals will generally just rob you and let you go, knowing you have no power to defend yourself. Whenever they think there is even a slight chance that you are armed and dangerous, they just shoot you in the back first and Rob your corpse. Guns won't make anyone safer
Besides, owning one or even multiple guns is completely legal in Brazil and always has been. What is in fact illegal are the carrying of firearms outside one's residence, and the ownership of automatic firearms.

This comment is so devoid of logic that it kind of boggles the mind.
Here in Australia it's incredible rare to see guns in the hands of criminals, even criminal gangs. We have no mass shootings. We have very little firearm related crime. It is the same in Finland, Germany, France, Iceland, Norway and most other developed nations. We enjoy just as much constitutional freedom and far less abuses from police. We enjoy far less crime than the US and we don't have to defend ourselves from anybody because of that. There are not gangs of armed marauders because that just isn't reality. You do not dwell in reality. The criminals do not have the upper hand because the police are the ones with the guns. That's the way it should be.
You have what you have in the US because there are hundreds of millions of guns on the street. Take away those guns and there are far less shootings and far less in the hands of criminals. This is the most basic logic to get and yet for some reason it just doesn't compute for people like you. The cognitive dissonance is real.

I've concluded that the gun movement there has no true personality with the intent of being tailored to Brazilian's needs and whenever I see the gun movement over there my soul dies with cringe. For me, it was basically used just for votes since Brazilians want a quick solution for the violence and since the bullet Caucasus (bancada da bala) much like every political entity in Brazil wants a "quick answer" to the problem. Then, they try to copy the US, but Brazilians are not Americans, better. Brazilians are not Texans, Arizonans, Georgians, New Yorkers, you name it. Unfortunately, Brazil is a land of criminals regardless of which government is in office and both the previous and current governments should have been enough for people to be disillusioned, however us poor bastards are unable to question that and instead just become more fanatical about politicians that really don't care about the people.
I'm glad I've been fully westernised to notice how much of insanity has been normalised over there way more than America could ever reach, that place is just cursed.
