@@scamila17 Yeah lol I read somewhere it was because it was harder to draw & animate Starmie at the time. So they opted to stick with Pokemon easier to draw for the main cast in the first couple of seasons. Which is also why they decided to make Ash’s squirtle & bulbsaur not evolve

Why does it feel at certain times Misty’s Staryu was stronger than Starmie.
In Staryus Debut it beat butterfree easily while Misty’s Starmie struggled with Pidgeotto.
Then in the entei movie Staryu was the only Pokemon to fight on Par with the unknowns illusions.

My opinion, Misty’s Starmie might’ve been a Staryu that she evolved too early so it didn’t get all the good moves first. So she keeps Staryu to train to a full potential

I disagree. In that gym battle Pidgeotto was simply stronger than Butterfree, that’s why Starmie lost to pidgeotto but staryu defeated butterfree. Starmie is very strong, it oneshotted a Weepinbell with a water gun. She probably chose to keep Staryu because it’s the Pokémon that needed to grow the most.

It just had better match-ups than Starmie. In the first episodes of the series, it's implied that Starmie is Misty's strongest Pokemon at that time. And then by Episode 60-ish she leaves it behind at her Gym, so it doesn't get any battle experience whereas her Staryu keep getting some. So right now Staryu is definitely stronger. It took, like, 20 years but Starmie is finally back on her team - so maybe it will rack up experience now.
Also Staryu is directly influenced by Ultraman (a popular Japanese show) more so than Starmie is, and you could tell the Pokemon writers were big fans of Ultraman and preferred having Staryu on her team rather than Starmie. That's why when it came down to leaving a Pokemon at the Cerulean Gym, it technically should have been Staryu if we're being real, but Misty leaves Starmie instead. The writers didn't want to part with Staryu, I feel like.
There was also talks about how Starmie and Staryu not having faces/emotions didn't help and the writers wanted less of them. They wanted Pokemon you could find cute and root for emotionally - which is why Misty gets a comic relief Psyduck and then a Togepi. Both are pretty popular with merch as well, more so than Staryu and Starmie.
I much prefer Staryu and Starmie's designs over most Pokemon, though... They were so unique and special.

fun fact: the clip in the beginning that shows ash receiving staryu's pokedex entry is an error. that pokedex entry is actually starmie's. a staryu doesn't gain the ability of a multi-colored core until they evolve.

@Az22490 the original Kanto arc treated evolution in pokemon almost as something to he feared. Brock had no evolved pokemon. Ash and Misty were hardly allowed to use evolved pokemon. Charmander turned bully after evolving, and they often talked about it being a perminent change to a pokemon that might take your buddy away forever.

It was always weird how Misty's Staryu was stronger than her Starmie. I feel as if the writers CHOSE to make Staryu preform better due to its influence of Ultraman. I mean even in its first battle it beat Ash's Butterfree, whereas Starmie lost to Pidgeotto. Then when Starmie does get a win (its only one btw) against a Weepinbell, it gets humilated by a Graveler moments after, completely stealing its win. Then is taken down by Bulbasuar lunging at it, all within the first 10 episodes it suffered 3 humilating losses. That's even worse than Goldeen, the Pokemon infamous for losing. At least when Goldeen won a battle it's victory wasn't snatched from it and it was by a fully evolved Victreebel, whereas Starmie fought Weepinbell. It was so bad Poliwhirl had to be introduced as an apology for Starmie (the same way Corsola was an apology for how useless Horsea was) and once it replaced Staryu as Misty's ace, Staryu began losing a lot more battles and was hardly used.
I feel Misty kept Staryu because she wanted to avoid making the mistake of evolving it to early like Starmie. It's also worth noting how its the ONLY one of Misty or Brock's Pokemon to stand against Molly's artifical ones, constructs of the Unown MADE to win.
