    Rules and Explanations
    Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
    Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

    One mon I think would be really interesting to do next is Clefable. Clefable is one of only two evolution lines that are in the fast level up group, so unlike Starmie you'll be able to level up fast in the early game, decent special at 85, amazing movepool, and it's also going to be a *very* unique Brock fight, since your best way of damaging Brock would be to use Metronome.

    • @benwarped7272

    • @LanceOmikron
      @LanceOmikron Год назад +40

      Unique perhaps, but... not a very encouraging prospect. If the best way to do damage is via metronome, then it essentially means that the Brock fight will be a complete lottery. Clefable is going to be horrifically inconsistent (and/or just slow, since its only other option is Doubleslap) in the early game. Much like Starmie, most of its good movepool is locked behind TMs that are not available in the early game, though unlike Starmie it has the advantage of STAB Mega Punch and Body Slam to look forward to (Atk is 70, so those moves will at least be usable). It's also worth noting that 85 Special is noticeably lower than Starmie's 100, and Clefable's speed is 60, nearly half that of Starmie's.
      We'll just have to see how much the fast level rate and Mega Punch/Body Slam make up for these deficiencies, but I doubt Clefable will break into the top 10.

      Actually, there are three evolution lines in Gen. 1 in the fast level up group: Clefairy/Clefable, Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff, and Chansey. (Unless you don't count Chansey as an evolution line.)

    I believe the Pokemon anime actually makes a great point about stone evos in the episode “Electric Shock Showdown”. Surge evolved his Raichu early, which ultimately does him in during the rematch because Pikachu, despite being weaker, has a more diverse level-up movepool early on.

    • @SkyNinja759

    hey Jrose. love the vids. I've noticed that you keep saying that your pokemon don't deal more damage despite you leveling them up quite often. If you weren't aware, damage rounding is an accidental mechanic that means that only levels that end with a 0, 3, 5 or 8 will increase your damage, both physical and special. as an example, Starmie in this video at level 17 wouldnt actually deal more damage than level 15, but would at level 18.

      Well technically the way the damage rounding works is that you barely do more damage per level unless your level ends in 0, 3, 5, or 8. So technically he is doing more damage but it's not really noticeable compared to if Starmie was level 18. At the very least the slight bulk increase helps... kind of

    • @imlrg9164
      @imlrg9164 Год назад +31

      No, your attacking stats go up as shown. If you didn't know, what level you are also factors into your damage calculations in RBY. Due to the way the game rounds numbers, that means that levels ending in 0, 3, 5, and 8 gets you a much more substantial boost to damage then if you were at another level. Pretty screwy stuff!

      With their best movesets, most of the "Not Mewtwo" tier would be, at the very least, rivaling Mewtwo's time (specially when JRose later made an under two hours run with Mewtwo) and the top five would probably be under 3 hours (and maybe a few of the lower mons would give us a nice surprise). In fact, I can see mons like Charizard going up a tier, so to speak, and rivaling the times of its siblings Venusaur and Blastoise.
      And Mew would be fighting with Mewtwo for "best time ever". Probably WON'T beat her child, but it would be a close competitor. Same with Alakazam. The main problem Mew had was Brock, because it didn't have any attack that wasn't resisted.

    I gotta see kingler. Crabhammer always being a crit and 95 power. Even off like 60 special that's 190 power which is similar to gen 1 explosion plus stab. And it has a crazy high attack stat which means body slam, double edge, even vicegrip early on will be very strong and you can badge boost with harden (if not swords dance I forget) for your physical moves

    Really loving the month of videos. I've been waiting for it since you announced it. Just in case you haven't noticed yet, you entered starmie's level as 58 instead of 59 in the rankings chart. I personally don't think it's a big deal, just thought I would mention it in case the level difference does effect later rankings.

    Considering how much the slow growth rate slowed some Pokemon, I wonder how Clefable would do who doesn't have exciting stats but does have the fast growth rate. Unlike Chansey, you have a Brock answer right from the beginning with Metronome which has a pretty good chance for hitting any of the gazillion of weaknesses of Rock/Ground Pokemon. Just too bad you don't allow evasion moves at all even when the Pokemon learns it naturally, but even without Minimize it would be interesting I think.
    I'm not expecting Clefable to reach the top at all, but it would be interesting to see how Clefable would fare compared to Starmie.

    My experience with Starmie was incredibly different to yours. I feel you set yourself up for a worse run by expecting it not to live up to expectations. My Starmie run outperformed everything except a Poliwrath that it roughly tied. It beat out Gengar and all the legendary birds. Haven't done an Alakazam run or a Blastoise run, but not expecting either of those to be significantly better than Starmie. I also didn't even use Rare Candies until after Lance, and I'm not convinced I needed all nine either.
    Outside of a few Geodude in Mt Moon I even managed to keep to minimum battles.

    Definitely overestimated Starmie since I had no idea it was in a slower level up group and overestimated Badge boosts, though surprised it didn't need badge boosts for most of the run. Honestly really curious how good Poliwhirl will be with hypnosis luck now, though I still think it'll struggle against Agatha. I will not stand for the anti-starmie propaganda. You’re making it out like it struggled through the early game miserably, when you beat everything with fairly minimal issue. Your ranking is highly flawed. Starmie is one of the best Pokémon in gen 1 due to its incredibly high speed, psychic typing, good special, good move pool. End of story.

    I've been playing Gen 1 from it's release and I only just now realised that the sprite for your character upon entering a battle is standing up. I always thought he was sitting down but I now see that what I thought was his leg is actually his arm, ready for battle. It makes so much sense but I'll probably never unsee my 25 years of imagining that the player is sitting down.
