If you had done this run in FRLG then Jynx would have powder snow and Brock would have been extremely easy.

It's hated because it's "ugly" and a "racist caricature", but I respect its design conceptually. It's actually inspired by a mythical Japanese creature called "yama-uba", so it makes a lot of sense that it has seductive mannerisms despite being grotesque. Also, frostbites can lead to purple/black skin, and it's given Dry Skin as a hidden ability (frostbites can heal by warming up the body without outright exposing it to high temperatures). Btw, Jynx didn't do as well as I expected. I thought it'd come very close to Alakazam if not overtake it.

I can't wait for him to redo this series with fire red or leaf green. they rebalanced most of the pokemon to actually learn some moves early. They probably had to do that because of eggs. Like jynx starts off with powder snow. Also abilities would make it really interesting. Like rattata gets guts.
Alot of mons will probably get screwed in gen 3 due to the changes. Dugtrio for instance still only has normal/ground moves via level up. It can learn a few new TMs like thief/aerial ace but i dont remember if they are on sevii islands or not which could leave him in a magikarp situation once you hit pokemon tower.

Actually I tried the Jynx solo run about a month ago, I ended up beating the game also at level 64 but it took me 9:09, 4 whole hours more than yours (kinda expected because I only beat Kanto like five times counting the remakes almost 20 years ago). I obtained the TM for Body Slam but decided to stick with Mega Punch and learn Body Slam via level up, because I kept Bubblebeam until the end in my movepool and I thought I might need to delete Body Slam and reteach it again for Champion's Alakazam, deleting Psychic for it. I also went with Ice Punch until the Elite Four, having Ice Beam and Blizzard via TM in case they were needed. Why I kept Bubblebeam? Because I didn't remember that Ice is normal damage against Fire in Gen1, making Ice Beam also super effective against Fire/Flying Charizard, silly me. Had I realized that I would have had a more consistent moveset not depending on TMs. Anyway, great run! I had fun watching it, and more fun comparing the events to my own run (yes, I also had to reach level 18 for Lick to beat Brock, by the way). EDIT: And yeah, I noticed something off with the Jynx sprites until I realized they were the Gold ones, and the back sprite being pixelated to match Gen1 resolution.

Always a joy to watch these. I've been watching these solo challenges since you started with Bulbasaur and it's always interesting to see the roadblocks you encounter and how you overcome them.
Haven’t even watched the video yet (it’s been live for less then it’s runtime), but that has got to be one of the shortest solo JRose11 runs not just in quite some time, but ever; I think only some of the early starter runs, where he was much lighter in detail and strategy, were shorter. I predict a something quite similar to the Mr. Mine sweep in the improved Red/Blue minimum battles run. But even better with ice moves for additional coverage. Let’s go! Edit: Okay, much, much better, the sleep addition and carrying Ice Beam and Blizzard too really sped things up. That 5 hour runtime is so deceptive, this would be near Gengar levels were it not for Brock grinding. But that’s how the game was built, can’t fault it for that. What a great run to do for No. 50, eh? And yes, I noticed the Gen II Jynx sprites. Any particular reason you wanted hose for this run? Was it to unambiguously have Jynx’s newer purple-skinned design?
Have been watching your videos for a while now, kept me occupied during long hours in the lab during grad school, then while stuck in my apartment during Covid lockdowns. I got Pokémon Blue running on a rooted 3DS, and managed to figure out how to start with any mon. Copied your challenge rules, started off easy with Starmie. Haven't played thru RBY in years, so I made a ton of time-wasting mistakes: unnecessary battles, backtracking, getting lost in Silph Co etc. Only managed 4:57 at level 58, final moveset Surf, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Blizzard. Did manage to sweep the whole E4 + Champion first try though. Compared to your times this is super slow, can't wait to see how you do with Starmie! Surely a low 3 hr time. Thanks for all the great content and consistent quality!
Seviper vs. Zangoose for you and the rival names? Are we hinting at a Gen III challenge next? No matter what it is, I'll watch it. Amazing content from an amazing uploader who knows the ins and outs of what he does. Love it!
Would be fun to see a “rivals” series with Pokémon like Seviper/Zangoose, Heatmor/Durant, Carbink/Sableye (esp since hasn’t done a XY run yet), Corsola/Mareanie (for Alola), doing 2-mon runs with each of them or even pitting them against each other to see who’s faster.
In Generation I, Charizard had a Special Stat of 85. From Generation II onward, it's Special Attack stat is 109. That's why Charizard's damage was surprisingly low.
Finding out that psychic type was actually supposed to be immune to ghost type in gen 1 was a huge surprise because when I played Red I often had a Ghastly or Haunter with me and I used Nightshade - a ghost move - to get through Sabrina's gym. Only to then additionally find out that Nightshade was yet another glitch, or rather functioning as intended, and also worked on psychic Pokemon.
It blows my mind bc I always remember in the show Ash,Misty and Brock go into that house to try and catch a ghost type (the 3 choices we had back then) to ask haunter to help battle Sabrina
I’ve been watching for a long time, your videos are perfect to watch/listen to while I’m cooking or cleaning. The only problem is I tend to miss stuff so I watch them 2 or 3 times so I don’t miss anything. Keep up the good work bud.
My theory is that when the devs made Psychic immune to Ghost, they intended to make Ghost immune to Psychic. That would explain why all the Ghost types in Gen 1 are also Poison, despite that making them weak to Psychic: they were meant to be immune anyway, so it wouldn't matter.
It’s a wonder the game even worked at all. Development was pretty rough and it had to meet a certain release date. Multiplayer battles were a last minute addition too, that’s why there are such broken moves such as wrap and fire spin.

Of all the Pokémon videos on RUclips, I felt like this was your signature when doing these runs. A welcomed change, but I hope you go back to the colour of the Pokémon. I always thought that was cool.
For a brief moment I thought, "why isn't he using Lick against Starmie? It's Super-Effective right?" Then I remembered, "Oh yeah, Gen 1 Psychic type is immune to Ghost." Becides, I'd wadger Mega Punch would do more anyway.
I think Blastoise would've been a better starter to choose for the rival, as Blastoise is resistant to ice type moves being a water type and Gyarados is out of the picture, you still have Arcanine that...does have Ember which is weaker than Fire Blast or Fire Spin to be fair, but Charizard is weak to ice type moves as well which means if you hit, it'll be a one shot on Charizard
I don't know if you'd still be able to get the times for the past runs, but have you considered a separate "post brock" list? Not skipping him, but seeing who has the fastest times from then on?
Would be a strange list Abra would be top easy since he gets past Brock at around level 30 giving it an advantage. All Pokémon who breeze past Brock would have longer times due to being way lower level.
I am in anticipation to watch this JRose… I was watching several other runs I didn’t remember the ends to last night. Literally re-watching these and I have never played a Pokémon game besides Snap!
Jrose, I did my first one of these speedruns following your rules. Nidoking at 3:09. With my suboptimal pathing, fighting a few extra trainers and no mimic, I think you could beat this time and possibly dethrone Mewtwo.
Rival 1A, both optional bug catchers and the lightyears trainer are mandatory and even then it took me 3 tries to beat Brock. Two optional trainers on the S.S. Anne for Body Slam and the Rare Candy and I think two optional trainers in Silph. Idk who is mandatory there. One was blocking the way to the heal spot and one was blocking the way to a Carbos. Rival 2 and the rocket grunt with Dig before Misty. Ice Beam then Erica, then Game Corner, Lavender Town, Koga/Safari, Silph, Blaine, Sabrina, Giovani. I thought this order would be best despite having to backtrack a little bit to pick up Strength. Everybody except Lorelei once and Final Rival were first try wins. Edit: Had to reset on Rival 6 and used 9 rare candies to beat him. Probably should have tried less, but it worked and I ended with great time.

Personally i believe ice should still be neutral against fire. When ice melts, it becomes water, and water is super effective, so even if ice is not very effective, it turning into water balances it out to neutral damage. Fire should still be super effective against ice, because now youre melting the pokemon itself, not its attacks, and melting a living creature would be quite painful..
@@verdibyrd my thought is that the innate heat of fire type pokemon would melt a large portion of any ice type attack, so theyd be getting hit with slush mostly, which is basically half ice half water, the ice part wont do much but the water would, since fire type. Now if we assume its magical ice that doesnt melt, then yeah its basically just cold rocks which rock is super effective so cold rocks should be too lol.
@Sniper i still think it should be neutral effective, since it wont be 100% water, and the non water parts wont do much. I think it would be more slush than pure water, and from a gameplay perspective neutral is better. Dont need to give ice a 6th super effective type coverage lol.
And I think Ice should be super effective on Water or at least resist it. Water turns into ice when frozen, which gets rid of its liquid properties and essentially assimilates it. Heck, Freeze Dry exists so it’s not like they’re unaware. Most Water types rely on liquid to the point of needing it to move around, it makes zero sense that they would be strong against something that robs them of their primary movement option. And unlike Fire which was absolute trash and needed a buff in Gen 1, Water has always been a pretty OP type. Not as much as Dragon or Fairy, but still: Only two weaknesses, one of which Water types get free coverage for (because they can all learn Ice moves) and both of which were special types (so Water types with great special bulk like Milotic essentially had no weaknesses because neutral physical moves would do more than moves that were actually super effective), Surf as a free 95 BP STAB move (and Waterfall as a great physical equivalent after the split) that can be taught as many times as you wish and later on, they even got stuff like Scald so the Water types can freaking burn you too. One more weakness wouldn’t have hurt them and it would have solidified Ice as a high risk high reward type to use with high offensive effectiveness, but basically no defensive resistances.
Great video and fantastic performance from Jynx I found it amusing you did the type chart explanation during the consistently uneventful Giovanni fight The Gold front sprite and the custom back sprite were cool too Awesome
I just thought the ultimate end to these videos would be for Jrose to put himself in the games as a pokemon and now I need somebody to design a Jaybird with a rose ruff. I think he'd be grass and flying. Anyone got any thoughts?
JRose would be half Splash type and half Metronome type if he were a Pokémon and he'd win in under an hour somehow getting Horn Drill or Fissure every time.
I feel like the strategy side of Jrose would lend him to be a psychic type. And his sheer force of will to do challenge runs indicates fighting type. Thoughts?
@@keatonpost8970 I figured flying and grass due to the Jaybird and rose split, but I like your approach also. Psychic and fighting would be pretty solid in gen 1 I feel.
I really enjoy your Pokemon runs. They're great background entertainment when I'm working. If that doesn't sound like a compliment, well it is. I love listening to your strategies and how you win through challenges. Can't wait for the next one.
Fun fact: Mr Mime in all the generation 1 games (including Japanese Blue version) is the only Pokémon which cannot have your trainer idea. Obviously this excludes gen 2 trade backs. Just thought I’d share that.
The problem with the Brock split in solo runs is the game's assumption that a large majority of these Pokemon won't be usable until they are met at higher levels and thus have different moves. The lowest level Jynx you can get is like level 12 from the Poliwhirl trade, and that means only leveling up 6 levels to beat Brock for this video. Additionally, a lot of non-first stage Pokemon don't learn any moves until like level 30. If there were a fair way to balance move learning under the assumption all Pokemon were found at level 5, the Brock split would be more fair and the quality of the Pokemon would be judged more objectively. That being said, it can still be considered objective within the confines of this game. My point is that Brock and the original starters are designed in tandem. All 3 get a move that helps them beat him pretty early on, but most Pokemon do not.
Two problems: 1. He'd have to start from scratch 2. it'd be difficult to work out what moves they should or shouldn't have and there's a general lack of low damage early game moves for certain types. You aren't expected to have an ice type before mid-game so the weakest move is Aurora Beam, which is substantially stronger than moves like Ember and Vine Whip you would expect to have around Brock. I think this Gen I specific issue makes FRLG runs interesting comparisons. For example, in FRLG Jynx would have powder snow immediately.
@@StealthNinja4577 not mention the revved up XP from being a trade Pokémon. As for turning every Pokémon into a potential starter, I’d say they addressed this issue by creating baby Pokémon, like they did with Jynx in later generations
@@StealthNinja4577 very true. Early era video games really felt like they were made for the sake of being made more than for profit. They’re objectively flawed, but they’re made with love and imagination. Gen 1 in particular is a beautiful disaster of code, but it gives it such a distinct character that makes the actual gameplay far more memorable than later generations
That’s about a third of all pokemon down now. Great job! Also being able to play cartridges on your phone sounds really cool. The power of science is amazing
As soon as you used Body Slam on Jynx, my mind immediately went to Pokémon Stadium, where Jynx' Body Slam looks quite brutal with it doing like an E. Honda headbutt move, it's great Thank you for the video :)
So for anyone curious, trying this run with Jynx’s Gen 2 level up moveset wouldn’t have helped all that much in the early game. It would get the additional benefit of Lick as a starting move, but its next attacking move would’ve been Powder Snow. . . which doesn’t exist in Gen 1 You also likely would’ve needed the levels in order to rank enough hits, but I don’t know
it'd be really nice to have a seperate 'brock excluded' tier or a 'real time commitment' tier cause it's more than a little weird that the mon that basically godstomped the entire rest of the game still ended up in the same tier as friggin bellsprout and other first evos lol. just kind of turns into misleading tiers
I JUST did this one last week! I was shocked how quickly I ripped through the game. But with STAB with Psychic and Ice moves, that covers most weaknesses in the game.
Great stuff JRose. Always love the vids. Can't wait to see the Snorlax run. Not even a Snorlax Stan, I just know he'll kill this run and have a chance at beating Mewtwo.
AFAIK the immunity of psychic pokémon against ghost type moves is a bug and wasn't intended (e.g. handbooks would state ghost to be super effective against psychic). With lick being the only ghost type move, it is plausible, that it was just overseen by the developers. Taking a look at the trivia section of the ghost type page in bulbapedia from bulbagarden it would seem, that I remembered correctly.

I'm suprised Jynx has fans then again Bruxish does to.
Mine is Hypno (yeah shocker with my pfp lol) but Jynx is easilly my fav ice type Pokémon by a long shot
Had a real crappy week, checked last night for a Jrose vid hoping to make me feel a bit better. My utter joy when I saw this notif today :)
This run is amaizng, the effort level is just freaking amazing along with the raw skill put into this
Edit: also the color pallet being correct per Pokémon is literaly the best thing ever I lvoe this
I can't wait for him to redo this series with fire red or leaf green. they rebalanced most of the pokemon to actually learn some moves early.
@@GhengizKanye Aerial Ace is on Route 9, but also since Struggle can hit Ghosts past Gen 1 you can always try that at least.

that subscribe click with kadabra was nice. i always respect when creators find unique ways to ask if you are subscribed rather than straight up doing it. it shows me you care and aren't arbitrarily like everyone else.

Imagine telling your 7 year old self you would be watching some maniac playing through these games with one Pokémon each time on your 60+ inch HD TV sipping a beer and it being the highlight of your week
Since you did Jynx, I can’t wait to see how Magmar and Electabuzz will do!

Love the channel
You know, I'm so conditioned by the later games that every time I watch one of these and you Body Slam Pikachu and Raichu I'm like "but Static!!!!" and then I remember it's gen 1 and I feel dumb.
Anyway I wish Jynx would get an evolution. I never liked using single-form pokemon (even if it was retconned into being a second form). Magmar and Electabuzz got evolutions eventually and I consider them and Jynx from the same gen 1 single-form "trio" so she should've got one too.
Probably due to all the controversy surrounding jynx, they've just dropped support so it wouldn't come up again.
That was hype as hell big J, the pacing of the video really makes you feel the speed. Absolute banger as always
Jynx has such a good movepool in gen1. Not surprised it did well.
Ice and Psychic covers literally everything. That's how Poliwag ended up in a high tier.
Love it!
I wonder if that was because of the guy who helped him, BlueZangoose?
Would be fun to see a “rivals” series with Pokémon like Seviper/Zangoose, Heatmor/Durant, Carbink/Sableye (esp since hasn’t done a XY run yet), Corsola/Mareanie (for Alola), doing 2-mon runs with each of them or even pitting them against each other to see who’s faster.
A JRose and a MDB video in the same day? Sign me in!
What a beast. I guess Jynx is good too. Put this content straight into my veins
In Generation I, Charizard had a Special Stat of 85. From Generation II onward, it's Special Attack stat is 109. That's why Charizard's damage was surprisingly low.
Reminder that Jynx is so powerful that her design had to be nerfed.
The patience by jrose is impeccable. Thank you for the quality content!
To this day, I still can't wrap my head around how someone could make such a big mistake. Like, didn't they have a testing team?
Ghost type: "You took everything from me"
Dark type: "I don't even know you"
It’s a wonder the game even worked at all. Development was pretty rough and it had to meet a certain release date.
Multiplayer battles were a last minute addition too, that’s why there are such broken moves such as wrap and fire spin.
@@SorenToKeiran-Murasaki Keep in mind how old this game is and how limited the hardware and the development tools were at that time. The colour change is a welcomed change.
But to be honest, I loved the colours you chose that identified with the Pokémon you have.
In an alternate timeline:
"But Arcanine isn't waking up in time... in fact, it's NEVER WAKING UP AGAIN!"
I remember Jinx mostly in Pokemon Stadium double slapping everyone.
It was an underrepresented as an ice/psychic Pokemon in my opinion.
Just redo every run but with water gun hacked onto every pokemon
Then you'll get a consistent post Brock time
I am in anticipation to watch this JRose… I was watching several other runs I didn’t remember the ends to last night.
@@critik_l Gen 1 Nidoking has always been disgusting for single-player runs. Imo the fact that speedrunners use it as their pokemon of choice is a testament to how good it is!
I also did a nidoking run last week and was alot of fun. Love me some Nidoking. My first game of blue in 20 years so was very suboptimal, but i know it won't touch mewtwo. Minimum battles after brock though is deffenently possible.
I remember being SUPER hyped when Nidoking got sheer force in gen5, as i was already ripping teams apart in gen4 compeditive with the king.
well he's not gonna dethrone mewtwo cuz he was able to get the mewtwo run under 2 hours optimally
@@olivernguyen1709 speedrunners use x accuracy and horn drill for e-4 and champion though, would be harder for jrose with no items, still would be a solid time though im sure
The alteration: Jynx is using her Gold graphic instead of the original sprite from Red & Blue and she has the updated skintone.
Personally i believe ice should still be neutral against fire. When ice melts, it becomes water, and water is super effective, so even if ice is not very effective, it turning into water balances it out to neutral damage.
Fire should still be super effective against ice, because now youre melting the pokemon itself, not its attacks, and melting a living creature would be quite painful..
also throwing a rock of ice at a fire lizzar would still hurt it, ice is hard
Dont need to give ice a 6th super effective type coverage lol.
after trying to clear my snowy driveway with a propane flamethrower two winters ago, I've realized how ineffective fire is against ice
Great video and fantastic performance from Jynx
I found it amusing you did the type chart explanation during the consistently uneventful Giovanni fight

That would include tradeback because there's no way to get an egg in a Gen 1 game.
With all the crummy pokemon you do these challenges with, it's always rewarding to watch you breeze through a challenge for change
Two problems:
1. He'd have to start from scratch
2. it'd be difficult to work out what moves they should or shouldn't have and there's a general lack of low damage early game moves for certain types.
Yea the jynx you can get from the trade is also expected to be gotten after going through diglet cave
@@StealthNinja4577 not mention the revved up XP from being a trade Pokémon. As for turning every Pokémon into a potential starter, I’d say they addressed this issue by creating baby Pokémon, like they did with Jynx in later generations
@@wilhelmisaac yea I kinda like the original cause they didn't think about all this stuff and it left room for fun challenges.

Jynx is based on the Yamauba, a yokai similar to an ogre who lures victims to her icy lair with charms and magic.
I'm glad you did this one, Jynx is actually super-cute and needs more attention.
So for anyone curious, trying this run with Jynx’s Gen 2 level up moveset wouldn’t have helped all that much in the early game.
It would get the additional benefit of Lick as a starting move, but its next attacking move would’ve been Powder Snow. . . which doesn’t exist in Gen 1
You also likely would’ve needed the levels in order to rank enough hits, but I don’t know
Loreli's Jynx has one of the gen 2 sprites instead of its regular "Black face" gen 1 sprite.
not sure if anyone else noticed this change.
it'd be really nice to have a seperate 'brock excluded' tier or a 'real time commitment' tier cause it's more than a little weird that the mon that basically godstomped the entire rest of the game still ended up in the same tier as friggin bellsprout and other first evos lol. just kind of turns into misleading tiers

Wow, it's such a brightful colourful red/blue run this time !! ^^ Big thanks to the person who made this possible ! 🙌🏻
I'm glad you talked about the the type chart, wondered if you were going to bring it up vs Misty because of not using lick.
