Comparing the knicks to other teams is tricky right now because they're strategy and tactics are wildly different. They're not that talented. How many teams could plug payton and gibson into their rotation and exceed expectations. They have 2 true centers, but they don't have larger wings. They have 2 small pgs. On paper a lot of what they're doing doesn't make sense. It's working though and maybe either they've got a new meta or it's going to blow up in their face.
They're going to be highly disappointed. I do expect the offensive rating to go up with the added shooting but I also expect the defensive rating to plummet. Say what they want about Reggie Bullock and Elfrid Peyton but they were above average defenders that could contain with their size and length on the perimeter. They now have Fournier and Kemba and that will expose a lot.
I love Knicks fans, they speak with their hearts all logic aside. I can't see them as better then the hawks. The 76ers and the Bulls are such question marks for different reasons that it makes this question difficult.

Elfrid Payton averaged 0.5 points in the playoff. Knicks can definitely compete the Hawks for the next year

I think it’s possible for the Knicks to be 4-6 seed. They upgraded significantly at two positions that lacked shot creation. Yes Kemba isn’t the Kemba we saw in Charlotte but to say he’s not capable of being a pretty good scoring option is dumb when Payton who was the worst starting point guard in the NBA and even one of the worst players in the NBA helped us secure home court when we had one of the toughest schedules coming outside of the all star break. The Knicks could’ve easily not made the playoffs because of how difficult their schedule was in comparison to other eastern conference teams. Also with the addition of Evan they also improve even more with floor spacing and shot creation. He’s not just a “shooter”. He can take players off the dribble and be a average playmaker. We got rid of Reggie but I think Rj is going to take his role in guarding the teams best perimeter players come next season and last season he did a pretty good job of doing so. There is a bunch of articles online that project RJ to be a pretty good defender after the season he had. Plus RJ in the Olympic qualifiers showed that he’s working on his shot creation by incorporating step back threes and a pull up game.
As for the Atlanta series, as a Knicks fan I thought it was a coin flip series that could’ve gone either way. I was more leaning to Atlanta to win the series because they had more shot creators. The Knicks in that series couldn’t attack Young because of they had no type of shot creation at the starting guard spot until D Rose came in but that didn’t help from a spacing perspective and small forward spot with Reggie. Atlanta literally hid Young on D because of Reggies lack of perimeter skills outside of just a stand still shooter. As a result Randle played bad cause they could literally send two defenders and Cappella could just camp in the paint. When you look at the regular season randle was hitting extremely difficult shots and they just didn’t fall because of how reliant the offense was on Randle and Atlanta’s great defensive scheme. With added spacing and shot creation I don’t think it’s outside of the realm of possibility for NY to be better than most eastern teams outside of Brooklyn, Milwaukee and Miami. Philly I’m shaky on cause I think they’re definitely going to move Ben but I don’t think they are going to receive any player that would substitute his impact on the team unless Beal asks for a trade which from the looks of it isn’t likely rn. Come this time around especially with Mitch being back and the Knicks having world class development staff they brought in with Thibs that’s known around the NBA I think they’ll do good. Also their defense wasn’t really predicated on individual defenders but team defense.

Knick fans just can't help themselves but set themselves up for disappointment. The step forward that they made offensively they took an equal step backward. I do expect leaps from RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin who is the key if he can play alongside Randle as a stretch big to open up the court and get out in transition.

New York, Toronto, Chicago, Charlotte, Cleveland, Washington will all be battling for the 8th seed. The Detroit Pistons will also be very competitive.
Boston and Philly are wild cards so New York could possibly end up being better than both of them, but Brooklyn, Milwaukee, Atlanta, and Miami will most likely be better than them, especially the first 3 I mentioned. Chicago is also up there, and you never know, there are teams that have a high upside that can turn everything around from last seasons. Teams like Indiana, who now have a better coach and dealt with Injury all year, and Washington, if Kuzma goes crazy or their younger guys (Rui, Deni, Thomas Bryant) significantly improve. They could be the 4th seed but it's gonna be tough.
Knicks are not even close to Philly. And even Boston now that they are healthy
