    There's so much deadpan irony/sarcasm here that just doesn't translate well. Norwegian humour can be very edgy, dry and ironic.
    For example when the anti-racist said "they usually come later", or the theory about making chimp-humans, I saw Mert have a facial reaction. But obviously those were meant to be taken as irony.

    This notion that human races don't exist, or at the least, that they are irrelevant, is not a controversial opinion in Norway. I grew up in the 90s, and the whole concept of human races and racism was first introduced to me by American pop culture.

    I do not claim to have definitive answers, but one thing is certain: political and ideological backgrounds can influence and create researcher bias. Researcher bias means that the results can be affected during the data collection process, in some way or another. This does not imply intentional data manipulation, but rather unintended influence. Additionally, preconceived ideals may impact the interpretation process. What we do know is that everyone who conducts research does so for a reason-there is always some underlying interest.
    In this type of research, there are many parameters that need to be in place.
    There are also several missing parameters in the arguments used to substantiate the results. Take, for instance, Jewish communities in the United States and their societal standing. I do not wish to undermine the exceptional achievements seen here, but there is an attribute of Jewish culture that is not adequately reflected, which is their strong ability to support their own-to lift each other up. Some may find this statement controversial, but I do not subscribe to conspiracy theories or the idea that Jews seek world domination. Rather, this phenomenon stems from their historical experience of antisemitism, which led to suspicion and exclusion. As a result, they have developed a culture of solidarity to survive. This has nothing to do with IQ but rather strong traditional networks.
    It is also important to note that these discussions often concern averages. Motivation levels can vary significantly. When an average score is as low as 60, there must be some individuals scoring well below 60-essentially non-functional individuals. Were their results included in the analysis? Well, they must have been, otherwise, how would one arrive at an average of 60? Unless, of course, everyone scored exactly 60, which would be just as remarkable. Either way, these are implausible results, but the researcher has still taken them into account.

    • @Henoik
      @Henoik 2 месяца назад +3

      Exactly, and as an academic myself, I find that a lot of these people seem to conclude on the causality, even though the studies only show a statistical correlation. A good way to combat researcher bias is by conducting bigger meta studies, but still, if you don't look at the why, then you can't really conclude with the why either.

      I largely agree, except for two remarks that I find important:
      1) It's not only about data collection, more about assumptions (axioms), leading to certain models, interpretations, and conclusions being strongly preferred over others, i.e. without empirical or logical ground.
      2) It's not really about jews per se, but specifically about ashkenazi jews, i.e. these stemming from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, etc. (formely German and Jiddish speaking areas).

      1. You are absolutely right. No, it’s not just about the process of data collection, but the margins are already influenced at that stage. Not least, what you’ve touched upon: whether it’s even possible to measure intelligence differences between ethnic groups without nearly identical cultural preferences and standardized tests.
      2. That’s correct. The claim was that higher IQs were only found among Ashkenazi Jews, but the Jewish success story in the U.S. also includes Jews of Sephardic and Mizrahi descent. So, your observation reinforces my point, which was: even though solidarity has been a smart strategy, it is neither in itself proof of, nor a barometer for, an overall higher IQ. It may be an indicator, but the formidable success of the Jewish population wouldn’t have been the same without traditions such as solidarity, education, and mentorship. IQ alone wouldn’t have led to the same level of success.
      And this is where your point comes in: especially when this success isn’t limited to Ashkenazi Jews. My claim is also not that certain ethnic groups may not have higher or lower measured IQs than others.
      One must also consider the reasons behind such differences, which brings us back to point 1. How to calibrated the measurement.

      2 - You increase your IQ score by conducting repeated tests. Are we to assume that your inherent intelligence increases just from performing tests?
      3 - Human genetics vary on a cline. There is no way to categorise biological differences among humans into "black" and "white" categories, because the categories are socially identifiable, not genetically.

      @@miloe436 Well, IQ is only one component of a person's intelligence. And that is developed through generations of natural selection. So depending on your ancestry, different components of the Human genes have survived or been developed depending on the different places of the world.
      How we look is part of this, and is what people call race. But a human race can be mixed, and a person's race does not decide really anything about what that person is good at or how smart they are. It is their genetics and upbringing.

  • @Nabium
    @Nabium 2 месяца назад +4

    The difference between humans and bred animals, like dogs, is the natural mix of humans. It's hard to make out where the borders would go on the supposed different races of humans, and most attempts at classifying different races has had huge problems when looking at genetics. For example East Asians have much more similar genes to Native Americans, than someone from West Africa has with someone from the Horn of Africa. And moreover, someone from the Horn of Africa has more genes in common with someone from Norway or even Native Americans than they do with Khoi-San people of Southern Africa. Yet we systematically label subsaharan into one race, and genetically speaking that isn't sensible - instead that's a sign of our own prejudice.
    We just have too much cultural prejudice to make sensible classification of supposed races.
    If we were to meaningfully use the term race then there should be some kind of scientific study to determin this, and not our Western traditional classification. And so far no biologist have been willing to make such studies, instead most biologists today speak against the notion of human races. So therefore it would make sense to talk less about races in our everyday talk.

    • @poulhenne

      The biological definition of race is actually very clear, but it does not get much airtime: If two individuals can reproduce offspring that itself can reproduce, they are of the same race.
