Wow I was little when my daddy took me and my brothers to the movies to see Beat Street. And everyone wanted to battle in the parking lot!!!! Lol those where the days.
Think it's finally time BEAT STREET GETS SHOWN ON TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES. WITH CLASSICS SUCH AS WEST SIDE STORY TO NAME A FEW. THIS MOVIE MAY NOT HAVE HAD GREAT ACTING. BUT STILL A CLASSIC NONE THE LESS.
Interesting. Nice that somebody followed up the artists from one of, if not THE, most influential HIP HOP Film of my generation. I still get goosebumps when I hear that intro. PEACE WORLD!!!
Thanks for the update! Rae Dawn Chong actually has a blog that I check out from time to time. I always wanted to find out what happened to Ozzie And Ruby Davis son. He was a pretty good actor.
I always wanted those tracks that were never put on any of the 2 BEAT STREET lps.... I found a couple of them tracks but, some will never be put out for us to have..... damnnnn!!!!
Genius moment when Ken Swift landed his strike on "hit me" at the battle! Freakin Genius !! And Breakers Revenge- definite the right song! That was Masterpiece material for the Battle! "Just Begun" best breakin anthem no question, but I remember being 14 years old with my friends and we were just Blown away!!
Saundra Santiago, Ramo's girlfriend, co-starred in all season of Miami Vice and guested on The Sopranos. A little trip to IMDB couls have made this much better...
"who says you can do graffiti in school, my notebook becomes a brick wall"- melle mel i first saw this film when i was 15 in 1999 i'm 29 now in 2013 and still rockin it! pz PSWIF ONE
Kadeem Hardison was in Beatstreet Classic!!! I saw the pieces on the train I knew that wasn’t done by Graff writers as a studied the real Graff movement, but then I didn’t know. I saw Style wars, Wildstyle n later got Subway art n learned about the real writers. It did most definitely influence me get into Graff Art though.
I also wish that We "The Dynamic Breakers & The Dynamic Dolls" would have done the film as originally planned, the details that caused us to pass on the movie were not worth it. Also our friend "Robert Taylor" who played Lee - has seemed to vanish and we all have tried to locate him. I would also like to mention that my girl "Brenda K. Star who had a cameo in Beat Street is still doin her thing and her oldest daughter is following in mama's talented footsteps...
@BlackVoicesOnFilm you welcome bro and i think there son played in some other movies too but the only other i know of that he played in other than beat street was "Def by Temptation" which also features kadeem hardison and samuel l jackson
Crazy Legs will battle Storm 1st of July 2016 in Moscow as part of the event BATTLE OF THE GODS he didn't stop in 2001, but he stopped competing (not dancing) in 2012 i think. he is Red Bull's b-boying ambassador around the world.
They are being a bit diplomatic. They scored bigtime on filming the breakdancing -- this remains the most beautifully shot breaking ever put onto film. Not just Crazy Legs but a number of legends, like Mr. Wave, in their prime. As for the graffiti, it is a shame -- the Hollywood set unions refused to let the trains be painted by real graffiti writers. So you end up with the lamest attempts at graffiti. If only they had ZEPHYR and DONDI and LEE do them, it would have been amazing.
That last info clip about Atlantic records never releasing the second volume is not true. I still have the first and second volumes. Perhaps that was a typo and they were refering to the third volume. That one was never released. Long live the old school!!
the days before 'hip hop' & 'rap' got ruined & got 'too big'....& reduced to the mass market drivle that it is today :( long live old skool, krs one, mellie mell, grandmaster flash, rock steady crew & bambaataa & universal zulu nation ;) peace from london ;)
They lied, I had Beat Street Vol.1 and Vol.2 on cassette tape back in the day! I played the shit out of both of them! How else did I memorize the "Santa Rap" from the movie...using the force!!!
Most of the "Real" people from Beat Street are still thriving and still very much involved in Hip Hop - Beat Street had the potential of being a real Hip Hop Movie if it was Not "Hollywoodized"
Hm. The tracklist for BEAT STREET VOLUME 1 & 2 doesn't correspond with what I remember I had on MC. I had one yellow and one orange MC, the CD cover on Ebay is a blend of yellow and light pink. When I read the track lists Im not sure - it's been a while. But they never used to have as many tracks back then, so perhaps those are the full Monty? I tough there was more Arthur Baker tunes there...
@nuknuknuk111 Thanks for the reply. I knew about Ozzie's death, I was interested in whatever happened to his son that was in Beat Street. I don't think I've ever seen him in anything else.
Anyone who knows where the two soundtrack albums can be bought? I remember the first one had a yellow album cover but the second had an orange or something. I never quite got the concept about two different soundtrack albums.
what about Brenda K Starr?? She pretty much the most successful of them all plus shes responsible for Mariah Carey's fame. "Vicious Beat" is my shit and should have been released! She still performing live at concerts today
yeah u know it jamwash100.....todays rap is appalling!!!! Was in primark not so long ago. Saw a t-shirt with 'Worlds Greatest Rapper'....on close inspection i saw it wasn't MELLIE MELL.....i felt like torching it there & then when i found it to be a LIL WAYNE t-shirt.....nuf said!!!
btw-always been mystified how they 'bombed' or painted those subway trains??? I know the graffiti was done by 'set artists'.....lookin back this film would have been better had they done what they done in WILD STYLE & brought in some real new york graff legends like DONDI,KASE 2,SKEME,IZ THE WIZ,TRACY 168,SEEN or LEE.....etc etc....did they use 'real subway trains' in this film????
3:30 I'm sorry Crazy Legs....love ya man but.... THANK GOODNESS they DIDN'T use the song you wanted (It's Just Begun). It was a cool jam but it didn't hold a candle to Breaker's Revenge!!!!!!!!!!! ("BREAK!...........BREAK!........BRE-BRE-BREAK!!!!")
Wow I was little when my daddy took me and my brothers to the movies to see Beat Street. And everyone wanted to battle in the parking lot!!!! Lol those where the days.
I can't believe crazy legs didn't like Breakers Revenge. I loved that track in the 80's. And now too.
Favorite movie of all time. Can't count how many times I've watched it over the years
Because you probably couldnt count pass 3, even then :)
they should of made a behind the scenes doco with Beat Street interviews with RSC remaining members and NYCB that would of been dope

Epic..this was the start of a culture revolution..not only the dance..the clothes.. the mode..the creativity
The director is Stan Lathan the father of sanaa Lathan.
Interesting. Nice that somebody followed up the artists from one of, if not THE, most influential HIP HOP Film of my generation. I still get goosebumps when I hear that intro. PEACE WORLD!!!
Thank you for this! I love these guys.
Thanks for the update! Rae Dawn Chong actually has a blog that I check out from time to time. I always wanted to find out what happened to Ozzie And Ruby Davis son. He was a pretty good actor.

I wonder how intense that battle would've been if they had battled to that Jimmy Castor Bunch song...the horns in that song are crazy...
Spit aka Bill Anagnos is my boy. Coolest guy on earth. Still doing his stunts...
Just keep looking and you will find it. There is one on there right now with a pic of the inside sleeve with a readable track list.
Yeah, the UK released both soundtracks Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 together. You can buy the 2 CD set online. I got mine from Ebay. Peace!
Genius moment when Ken Swift landed his strike on "hit me" at the battle! Freakin Genius !! And Breakers Revenge- definite the right song! That was Masterpiece material for the Battle! Actually, the Graffiti Artist known as Lee was the one who did most of "Ramo's" pieces in this film. Look it up! Peace.
Volume 2 was released (on vinyl)
Kadeem Hardison was in Beatstreet Classic!!! I saw the pieces on the train I knew that wasn’t done by Graff writers as a studied the real Graff movement, but then I didn’t know. I saw Style wars, Wildstyle n later got Subway art n learned about the real writers. It did most definitely influence me get into Graff Art though.
To :WHEREARETHEYNOWGUY,and anyone else who dose not know, the lady that played lee's mother (CORA) was also the ORACLE in the MATRIX.
I also wish that We "The Dynamic Breakers & The Dynamic Dolls" would have done the film as originally planned, the details that caused us to pass on the movie were not worth it. in 'Def By Temptation' Guy Davis was the 2nd bartender
I was sweet fifteen years old.
"ramo" was the doorman at the eurotrash club in 'Money Talks'
@BlackVoicesOnFilm you welcome bro and i think there son played in some other movies too but the only other i know of that he played in other than beat street was "Def by Temptation" which also features kadeem hardison and samuel l jackson
