- Cindy Mizelle's first (and only) solo artist 12" single from the soundtrack to the 1984 movie "Beat Street". Since then she has evolved into one of the most in-demand singers of popular music as a featured vocalist, and released a self-titled album in 1994.
You can't help but smile and remember the good times when tunes like this come on
I can feel the smell of fresh can spray.
Never in my life have I ever heard this get played on the radio. I miss this era though. The late 70s and early 80s NYC had beautiful art on the trains
@@Underhills Beat Street Breakdown !!
I was the first in my grade school to have the same white leather pumas with the fat red laces 👍
Hell yeah. And his expression at the end says it all!
since 1984 I always loved the voice of this woman in this song
This is a great song I love it just as much as the movie beat street , there is no better hip hop movie out there I went to see it at the theater in east Los Angeles when I was about 14 years old at the golden gate theater .
travelled to NYC because of this movie magic moment
this is the perfect type of song to get your night started!!!
This was one of THE best Music years ever, and best of all this is the year I graduated from High School,Man , I can't believe that was 30 years ago.
Love that we started this back in the 80's.
Space Age Renegades represent!!!
I have this on cassette. One of my best memories of being a dancer in the 80's. Thanks for loading!
now this is hiphop music people think rap is just hiphop music this is a good example of just straight bboying hiphop music hiphop music is a wider range than just rap think about it kraftwerk,Freeze,New Order, Rockers Revenge,Art of Noise, incredible Bongo band, i can go on and on you know what i'm saying
Those vocals! No wonder Mariah Carey idolizes her!
RAMO
IF ART IS A CRIME
MY GON
FORGIVE ME!
1984 was such a magical year for music and movies all i have to say is you had to be there to live it and if you grew up in the 80's like i did you grew up in the best decade EVER
Yes indeed! I am a witness! That was my freshmen year of high-school, and we were in full affect! Lol my 80s slang! 😂😂😂
Even Purple Rain?
Who can tell me who was the original drummer recording this song ? The groove sounds like Jonathan "Sugar" Moffett, drummer of the king of pop music, MJ Thanks in advance.
Magical like my dirty underwear 😢
Who still listening in 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027...? While playing this jam, I just showed my children that I can still windmill at 48 years of age.
🎧🔊💘🔥💭 #BBoyStyle #BOSS

SLUVA Luv yesss my big brother. Gosh I miss those days
Crazy how they don't sell these Puma suits anymore. They were the flyest!
1984 - Puma suit top, Lee Jeans & name belt, and either suede pumas or shell tops with fat shoe laces that matched your Puma jacket
#Classic
oh hell yeh,,,no guns,,no fights,,no problems just breaking and dancing,,,thats how you battle,,,
Oh, there were fights, and mostly stabbings. The BX was notorious! There were never any "good ole days" with Hip Hop. Why many "think" it was a good time, because most likely they were kids. Most people miss their childhood, they didn't have the same responsibility as an adult.
I'm proud I lived that era, I'm proud of my generation. It wasn't "epic" it is MYTHIC!!
Well said!
Damn right
Who can tell me who was the original drummer recording this song ? The groove sounds like Jonathan "Sugar" Moffett, drummer of the king of pop music, MJ Thanks in advance.
Android phones and other high tech gadgets and all the crap we define as futuristic importance.....id give it all up for just to re-experience a moment of the 80's. Even TV went off at a respectable time of night.
alvindlee1 💯💯✊🏿
A Hidden Gem!!!!
Listening to this in 2021 and feel sorry for the younger generation not experiencing this
Have LOVED this "Beat Street" single ever since I bought the 12" way back in 1984 (30 yrs ago!) - Cindy Mizelle's vocal is one of the BEST of the 80s - if you like more Cindy, check out her overlooked/underrated vocals on ATTITUDE's 1983 "Pump the Nation" LP produced/written by THE SYSTEM!! Cindy released a solo album in the 90s, and it was OK< but nothing like her stellar 80s work!
Gosh I love this soooooo much. And I've always loved this song. My favorite scene was when they were breakdance fighting in the subway
God, I love this song! It has to be one of my very favorites from the Beat Street soundtrack. This song is a flawless and perfect combination of hip-hop, disco, funk, and R&B; the bass-line is killer, the drum beats just snap, the percussion just draws it along, the smooth strings and funky horns and Ms. Mizelles wonderful vocals. There isn't a down moment in the whole song. Simply perfection.
just seen the movie againnnnn tonight!!! its on my top list for Xmas movies actually!!!
Kudos. Me too. The Christmas vibe is awesome.
Word. Lets get married and watch it every weekend
You are looking very young. Most of the younger people don´t like this style. Good taste in music...
Beat Street on the East Coast and Breaking movie on the West Coast. Epic time to be young teen. No phones , no fights just break out the cardboard
I love this song!
Beautiful.. before Gangsta Rap came and fucked it all up!
I listen to this every time I'm about to go on a first date. Always so psyched haha
My favorite song off this soundtrack, I miss the 80's so, so much one of the best decades.
That smile at the end of the video says it all. 3:42 :)
Oh yeah, that was the night. ;)
I've been there before, and had that same smile on my face. Ain't love grand?
This song just popped in my head out of nowhere
gonna be dancing all night long gonna be singing till the night is gone...
Wow This gives me a 80s chill down my spine
Me lembra de assistir esse vídeo todas as tardes de domingo no programa Barros de Alencar, nós anos 80
Perfect song for that era, being young and having fun in the clubs!
It's funny how if I had a choice to visit any period in time, I'd choose the 80's over times like the 1700's, 1800's, or any other period, solely because of how much fun people look like they had back then. Epic times.
My favorite movie, and the movie I’ve watched the most, “ Beat Street!”
my most all time favourtie movie ever, this movie was the bomb and still is, cant beat the old skool stuff
Nostalgia is the perfect word to describe what I feel listening to this.
She should have had a big solo career! What a vocalist
To those who are around 30 and under who are watching this video....... I really feel sorry for you! You have missed a great time in history! The rap music you are listening to today blows! All the songs sound the same! Be glad that you have RUclips so you can hear great hip hop from the 80's and 90's!
This movie had some of the best dance cinematography ever, the battle scene in the subway is shot so well and the roxy battle is still one of the greatest dance scenes ever caught on celluloid (next to hellzapoppin of course). These scenes were shot with a sense of epicness (if thats a word)...
I love this movie! This song really captures the innocence of those days.
And Brenda K Starr was my crush!!
This is my all time fvorite movie Beat Street breakdown :)
When New York was the land of trend setters, those days are long gone
Who can tell me who was the original drummer recording this song ? The groove sounds like Jonathan "Sugar" Moffett, drummer of the king of pop music, MJ Thanks in advance.
2 teenager's in a cinema in Kilmarnock Scotland. Monday night. Only 2 people in . What an experience. We practice all night long to be like our heroes. ROCK STEADY CREW.
Beautiful montage! Great job on the edits!
I've only seen this movie bout 1000x
Nothing today compares to the 80's
Absolutely nothing! I was just reminiscing today about this very thing!
Essa música marcou os anos 80 eo começo do movimento hip hop
Underrated!!!!
Ahh! I remember how dope this song used to be. It captures that 80's street vibe nicely!
Classic music 🎶🎶🎶🎶 every time I hear this just makes me wanna dance 🎶🎶💯💯💯✊🏿
This is The Real NEW YORK CITY In Total Full Effect right here.I'm from Bmore and I Think I enjoyed This Movie probably more than some New Yorkers lol. This particular Time and Era was So Fucking Beautiful Man.Everything seemed like it Funky Fresh back then.I almost wanna Cry 4real at Times.Because There will NEVER EVER BE A TIME AND SPACE LIKE THIS AGAIN.Shout out to All The B-Boys and B-Girls and Party People Nation wide. And World wide as well.Long live The 80's.
I'm from Detroit but I can relate
This literally almost brings me to tears 🥹.. so many memories growing up in this era.. being around it all! Shelltoes with the fat laces, karate movies on channel 5 after Spider-Man and his amazing friends.. those who didn’t live through it or experience will NEVER understand.. what a time to be alive! ❤
Who can tell me who was the original drummer recording this song ? The groove sounds like Jonathan "Sugar" Moffett, drummer of the king of pop music, MJ Thanks in advance.

Remember the 80's like it was yesterday, if I picked a decade to live in, the 80's would be on top of my list.
Great song, Great Movie, Great Upload!

So, this is the same lady that sings background in ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ by Alicia Keys huh....?
Just to make it simply for you homeboy, this is called "Elektro Funk" a HUGE part of the Hip Hop culture of the 80s.
I consider myself to be very blessed to have been in high school during the 80's back when Dancing was KING!!! Such wonderful memories of that priceless era!! I'm happy to say I'm still dancing today and loving every minute of it!!!
One of the best dance tracks of all time!!!
Hell yeah always give this a blast and reminisce bout these times, and how FKN cool it was , the whole vibe was about everyone having a good time and listening to bad ass tracks like this,, 🔊🎵😎🔥🔥👌
Tha soundtrack 2 this movie was so 💣💣💣 that it had 2 albums worth of good muzik. No other movie had 2 albums for the soundtrack but this 1..👍🏿👍🏿
this movie is the ultimate breakdance movie and breakers from this generation who have not seen it are bited :_). the songs are classic.
Those were the good old days
One of my favorite song and movies from great time. I was 11 when this came out and brings back a lot of memories.
Great song, and great movie. Love Beat Street, one of my all time favorite movies..
Love this Cut and this movie I'm from Philly but this movie right here made everyone of me and my boys wish we was from NYC at this time. We knew NYC was the place to be all because of this flick right here
You still smokin' on the go go scene?
oh man, hearing this makes me want to watch the movie all over again.. "" if art is a crime may god forgive me.. "" Taggers Creed
3:00 Mr. Wave was a beast! Oops I meant STUPID FRESH!! LoL
I saw him cracked out in hells kitchen around 91/92, by my friends building. I didn't even know it was him, my friend pointed it out.
Nice job! I edited a video for the Beat Street Breakdown years ago in film school. This was my favorite song on the sound track though!
Back in 1984 I thought this song was a sellout as it never quite fitted into the hiphop atmosphere. BeatStreet was all about hiphop so only rap music was valid. Today however I love it. And looking back this movie was compromising as quite commercial anyhow, so it fits quite well into the "happy street culture" that went on. A very nice contribution that stands the test of time.
+ventende Sellout? How so? Shannon's "Let the Music Play" had already been a huge hit, and showed how jazz/funk fusion and hip-hop could be blended together to be a club pop hit. The System's "You're In My System" had done the same thing. Arthur Baker (the producer) is from Boston, and grew up in the 70's club scene, which was all about this kind of "high energy" track. It's a late 70's club record (like "Wanna Be Starting Something") with beat box elements as adornment! Lol She sings her ass off and totally dominates the "street beat production"...from beginning to end..
bourgeoisbrats
Let The Music Play was never hiphop, it was Freestyle. The name itself implicates what that was, a blend between styles. But it was never hiphop, just like some of the tracks on BeatStreet were never autentic hiphop. The movie itself was gathered as a commercialized compromise. But as I wrote, great memories and important in its own right. I'm a great fan of The System by the way and as a DJ I've played them alot, actually to audiences that wouldn't get to hear them anywhere else. But it has nothing to do with hiphop although they appeared in BeatStreet. Harry Belafonte had a quite bland approach to this whole culture, for the people who had been following rap since Sugarhill Gang and The Fatback Band (King Tim) BeatStreet and much of its musical content was defined as a sellout.
ventende Never said LTMP or YIMS was hip hop...said they were a based on a groove/beat associate with the NY hip hop culture :-) LTMP started out as a hip hop beat that was very much like Planet Rock/Trans Europe Express. YIMS was more like Trans Europe Express mixed with 777-9311…until the chorus…still remember my reaction when I first heard that string pattern looping over that super funky bass line and very Herbie Hancock-like synths, on a really good system :-)
David Franks (from the System) and Robbie Kilgore (keyboardists, arranger on LTMP, and roommate at the time) have jazz fusion backgrounds as musicians/composers, so they added those elements to both songs. The intent was to show that a hip hop beat could be the basis for something more musically and compositionally sophisticated, than what Tommy Boy Records was releasing at the time.
I agree that “My Adidas” would be a better track than “This Could be the Night” in a movie like “Beat Street”, but labelling the latter a sellout because it had an “up” feel and featured a singer instead of a rapper, feels kind of purist…like saying Left Eye sold out by being in TLC.
Don't misunderstand me. I have the greatest respect for all your references, as a matter of fact I was a huge fan of the freestyle sound when it came about - and Shannon was almost Donna Summer to me for some hectic years in the mid 80's. That music was like tailor made for that phat vinyl sound, I actually ordered US press versions only just because it sounded better than the copies here in Europe that normally came from vinyl factories in Belgium or Holland.
Anyways, I still think Beat Street was a sellout in terms of authenticity. I remember how commercialized it was when it came out although I enjoyed the pop tunes on the OST. I don't feel the movie failed as a hiphop tribute but the music could have been more "raw" and/or autentic in terms of hiphop. It was almost like Fame with twist. But I guess you know what I mean since mentioning My Adidas being a more suitable track compared to the disco/pop stuff. I agree. The movie Breakdance was the worst however. My god, that really nailed the coffin on all things hiphop. But again, I actually enjoyed Ollie & Jerry etc. But it wasn't hiphop. It was washed out and re-branded on a glossy package for easy consumption.
In terms of Planet Rock/Trans Europe Express you can send all royalty checks to Kraftwerk! That whole genre was a huge byte cause they never acknowledged the source.
I love the work of David Frank. My Ortofon pickup wore out a couple of The System albums. Couldn't get enough. My favorite track is probably "This is For You". I've played it alot, both on-air and in clubs.
Other honorable mentions from the world of groovy 80's tracks: Renee & Angela "Ill Be Good" / SOS Band "Just The Way you Like It" / Scritti Politti "Absolute" (12 inch) / Zap Band "More Bounce to The Ounce" / Herbie Hancock "Motor Mouth" / Loose Ends "Hanging on A String". The list goes on...
Money! Will agree that both "Beat Street" and "Breakdance" were epic fails when it comes to being representative of NY's hip hop culture, at the time.
To me, hip hop is a culture that's based on "the hustle" to get recognition in the art form you have a genuine passion/talent in, without straying from your true identity in order to achieve that. When it comes to music, I think 80s/90s music artists like Scritti Politti, Jane Child, Alanis Morissette, The System, Jamiroquai, etc.(along with Dirty Loops for the millennials) fit that definition musically, so... :-)
Me encanta esta mezcla, me hace ir a mis 21 años cuando la baile viva el ritmo electro breaks. Hoy 19-septiembre 2022 aún la siento en mi cuerpo de roca.
Awesome thanks for the upload really enjoyed that man an instrumental would be wicked huh?
