Intriguing interview. I was around at the time auditioning to get in the movie with my Dance Crew. We were refined Street Dancers from Long Island New York. We auditioned ironically at the Roxy's back in early 84. I worked with some of modern jazz dancers Rae Dawn Chong character was conducting for the show. I thought she was hot. She later performed in "The Color Purple ". Great job interviewing her. The scene in the club where she and Guy Davis did their Slow Dance. Some Dancers like Peaches and Lock A Tron John was dancing in the background. My Crew lost the audition to the two kids in the audition scene in the Roxy. If you see the film they were the last two in that scene. I guess they found them more sweet. We should've been in that film. It's all good. I can say we auditioned for it and came close.
mooky I’m glad you watched it! It’s an amazing movie. For deeper insight.... watch the Beat Street after party with Michael Tilghman I posted. He has such knowledge about the movie and art. You’ll love it! ❤️
I remember Rae Dawn Chong mentioning she had a huge crush on Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew in a previous interview. I wouldn’t be surprised if she hooked up with him.
This is great. This film had such a huge influence on my youth and was the defining film of its type. We're doing a live stream discussion about it this Saturday, so great to listen to this.
I truly enjoyed this interview! Beat Street is one of my favorite movies! It was good to hear the behind the scene stories!!! I look forward to seeing more interviews from you!!! Great job!👍🏼
It's amazing she said Beat Street was the Disney version , I always thought Breakin with Ozone and Turbo was the Disney version of breakdance movies. Beat Street seemed more Authentic of BBoy / Hip Hop culture . Still loved her in the movie and also Commando with Ahnold .
I've always loved Rae Dawn Chong she held it down in Beach Street I thought she did an excellent job working at the junior college as a conductor and she did great in the movie Commando I had a big crush on her and Alyssa Milano

I remember as 12 year old kid I thought Rae Dawn was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen! Now 47 she still got to me!
Beautiful inside and out❤️
I just took a trip down memory lane by watching Beat Street again and now I get this interview. Yes!

Mother of one; grandmother of two; great-grandmother of THREE!!
Some people are old souls but she’s the opposite fresh lovely energy -She has a youthful spirit!! The story of the old lady pissed me off.

Yeah… you can tell at the Roxy battle she and her girls lit up when Legs did his particular routines.
It was him. He said he made out with her on set on “The Godfrey Show”
