    There's no denying that Judy Holiday was an extremely special actor. She had something special. Kinda like Marylin.

    I don't know what to say... Holliday was really amazing as Billie Dawn in "Born yesterday" and her triumph was not unfair at all, in my opinion. Of course, Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis and don't forget Anne Baxter, and Eleanor Parker, were magnificent too... It is hard to choose among them.

    Quite astute, as usual. In terms of Grace Kelly, it should be remembered that she had a lot going for her, such as: 1) she was the MGM contract star, and MGM had the largest contingent in terms of the Academy membership (and in those days, the studios would dictate how their employees voted); 2) she was a young star who had a lot of momentum in terms of her career, being cast in major films by Fred Zinnemann (HIGH NOON), John Ford (MOGAMBO, and her first Oscar nomination), Alfred Hitchcock (DIAL M FOR MURDER, REAR WINDOW, TO CATCH A THIEF), even Elia Kazan (she was the frontrunner to play Edie in ON THE WATERFRONT but chose to work with Hitchcock instead, which is how Eva Marie Saint got the role). And she had won most of the awards during that year, including the New York Film Critics Circle (which gave her the award for three performances: DIAL M FOR MURDER, REAR WINDOW and THE COUNTRY GIRL). As you say, if she had been nominated for (say) REAR WINDOW, there might not be such a confusion, but THE COUNTRY GIRL is the kind of prestige project that has dated in the ensuing years. And Judy Garland had a bad reputation, for all the problems (lateness, delays) that had become part of the baggage she brought with her. In fact, A STAR IS BORN went over budget, and a lot of that was documented in the press at the time as being caused by Garland's problematic behavior. (Even George Cukor was quoted as being exasperated by the delays, so that in later years when he would lament how Garland lost the Oscar, it's highly duplicitous since his negativity was on record.) Plus: Jack Warner was furious at the budget overruns, and basically told Warner employees that they were under NO obligation to vote for Garland, and MGM tried to get their employees NOT to vote for Garland (since they had fired her for her "bad" behavior, and didn't want to reward it). If you have two huge blocks of voters being told NOT to vote for you, i don't think you have a chance! So the MGM star of the year (who would be Grace Kelly) was the obvious winner.

      Garlands behavior was result of being abused by the industry and she deserved to be finally awarded. She was also a far bigger star than Grace Kelly though I love her too.

    I’ve got one more comment: can you please please please do a video explaining how on earth in 1974 Glenda Jackson for A Touch of Class beat Ellen Burstyn for The Exorcist, Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were and Joanne Woodward in Summer Wishes Winter Dreams? It could not have been because she obviously gave the best performance, and it could not have been for sentimental reasons because she had just won three years previously. I have never been able to understand it.

    I can't help but think that New York Film Critics' Best Actress winner Bette Davis would have won for All About Eve had they put Anne Baxter in supporting. But they did the right thing, Baxter was clearly co-lead, and also brilliant. Holiday gave a wonderful Oscar-worthy performance, but Bette and Gloria Swanson gave performances that are probably among the top 10-ish most iconic performances in cinema history (among leading actresses). Davis' Margot came in #6 among all performances, and #2 among lead actresses, from Premiere Magazine (Meryl Streep got #1 for Sophie's Choice).

      Partially did that because Judy was in town during the ceremony they also did that on numerous ocassion for nominees who couldn't attend if they could (or permitted to do so). Many didn't get the same treatment is because they were out of town/country, doing work (stage or filming on location) or refused to be filmed.

    "A Star is Born" was actually nominated for 6 Oscars. Most critics at the time boycotted it during awards time largely in protest against the unprecedented cuts Warner Brothers imposed on the film AFTER its general release. Garland did win a Golden Globe, but the boycott & widely publicized cuts may have also unintentionally affected Oscar voting. Kelly by contrast had a banner year with an impressive 3 box office hits in circulation that year!

    I think the 1950 race is reminiscent of the 1962 race wherein the "rising talent" won over two prestigious Hollywood icons who either already won (Davis had 2 and Hepburn had 1 as of 1962 and would win three more) or have been legendary (Davis, Hepburn, and Swanson, a silent film star). The Academy loves to honor new talent (e.g. in the case of Audrey Hepburn against Deborah Kerr and Grace Kelly over Judy Garland and her issues). It is unfair and disrespectful for Judy Holliday's win to be considered an upset given that 1) she was terrific in Born Yesterday and 2) won a Golden Globe for Musical/Comedy. The vote-splitting theory is nonsense because while Anne Baxter's Eve Harrington was an undeniable lead (more of a co-lead in All About Eve), I do not believe that she was considered a threat to Bette Davis' Margo Channing performance-wise because Bette Davis was more divine in it. The Academy also would not honor older actresses for being delusional and clinging to their heydays (in the case of Gloria Swanson for Sunset Boulevard and again, Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane) because they perhaps perceived them as desperate attempts to win. They would not deny their talent by granting them a nomination. (Davis's claim that she was a frontrunner in the 1962 race was sketchy for me since the theater nominees: Bancroft, Page, and Remick won more critics' awards). Judy Holliday's win is shocking since she beat two Hollywood heavyweights but her win is not upsetting because she earned it fair and square.

      @@ChrolliForever yeah and let’s be real, Bette Davis MADE All About Eve. Yes Anne Baxter did a good job but her role could never have been enough to compete with Bette, why she went lead is beyond me, and I honestly feel that probably didn’t sit well with the academy, no Anne Baxter was never realistically going to win, but still having her on the ballets probably did cause confusion or at least an avoidance of all about Eve in general

  • @peteradaniel
    @peteradaniel Год назад +1

    I think the problem with Bette Davis’ role in All about Eve was how intrinsically similar it was to Talulah Bankhead’s real life journey, as well as the fact that Davis had previously been picked instead of Bankhead for Oscar winning and nominated roles. In all honesty the real rivalry wasn’t Bette and Joan it was Bette and Talulah.

    The press and the voters at that time had the perception of people at that time who had actually seen those performances at movie theaters when those movies were first released. They were influenced by the impact that the films and its performances had at the time. Now we observe those "upsets" from the perspective of people from present time who consider those movies and performances according to the impact which they had left in history. To an actor or to a filmmaker, I believe that leaving your impact or legacy through the ages must be more important than winning a golden statuette. Nobody cares about Born Yesterday or The Country Girl today, but we still remember Sunset Boulevard and A Star is Born.

    Not having seen The Country Girl I was SHOCKED to hear Bing Crosby's gravelly voice here in the stead of his usually trademark crooner voice. This was definitely against type for him as well, and part of me thinks that Grace's win may also have been a way of awarding Bing by other means as well, while still giving Brando the Best Actor Oscar (he had - after all - already been "robbed" of the award when he lost to Bogart in 1953). Awarding Grace could have been a way of killing two birds with one stone - obviously I have no proof of that but just IMHO
