Curious what you guys think of my travel philosophy... Have you ever had an amazing experience by abandoning your plans and just saying "yes" to an unexpected opportunity?

    • @margiehart1001

Those are the best experiences. It's nice to have a plan, but you don't have to stick to the plan. Just to know you have one just in case.

Not quite the full day adventure you had, but my sister and I were in Oaxaca, and a friend I’ve gotten to know there asked if we would like to go to a chocolate “experience.” How could you say no? The “experience” was this gastronomic almost performance where this former architect-cum-chocolate guru presented different concoctions he would make right in front of us based on research he had done on ingredients commonly used in pre-Colombian times. The combinations were both sweet and savory and seemed totally off the wall. They were all amazing. One used petals from a particular type of hibiscus I’d never heard of. Another whipped it into a foam with almost a cocoa + lavender taste. Another had two elixirs at different ends of this glass vessel that almost looked like a marijuana pipe. At first you, you tasted the liquids separately from each end, but then tilted the pipe to mix them together for a completely different flavor. Another used toasted amaranth in this crunchy nugget that would blow a Nestlé Crunch out of the water. Apparently, he was just testing out this “experience,” and we were some of the early guinea pigs. I try to say yes whenever anyone asks me to try something new or something I have no idea what I’m getting myself into - especially when it involves being a guinea pig like that.

Harper, you and your wife should come to amalfi where my nona was born. very famous for seafood and a very beautiful part of italy. i recomend Scialatielli all'Amalfitana, Tagliolini with lemon, Ndunderi, elizia al limone and Amalfian Sfogliatella. ive always wanted to go and live with my nona up at the top of the mountain with her at her old house. also she is a chef in amalfi and a lovely lady. and she was born at a very old church because the town was smaller like 78 years ago when she was born and it was a little more difficult to travel. But amalfi has a beautiful history.

When we moved to Arco Felice near Naples back in around 1998 we had a great villa overlooking the water but our household goods would not arrive for 1-2 days... we had sleeping bags and canned food. My wife and I were lying on the nice tile floor chatting when suddenly the door opened and around 12-14 people streamed into our place... It was the neighbors. They knew that we had to wait for our stuff and wanted to welcome us so the brought platters of steaming hot Neapolitan specialties... they plopped onto the floor with us and we all ate and chatted quite a bit-mind you, they did NOT speak English and we did not speak Italian at the time... It was quite the welcome and quite an impression!.

Besides being Italian, I am a retired Air Force C-130 pilot. Some of my best memories are nights we spent in Italy. If I ever had the opportunity, I always wanted to eat at the local place, not the tourist traps. One evening we got in really late at Aviano Air Base in the north. When we finally got to the hotel in Aviano, all the restaurants were closed, but the hotel opened their kitchen for us. Not just a simple meal, we had two choices for a first course and two choices for a second course plus dessert and lots of wine. You just cannot beat Italians for hospitality! Great video Harper and Eva!

What a charming and delightful story. My dad, rest his soul, came over to Canada in 1955 as a young man of 19. He worked at Weston Bakeries in Windsor for 17 cents an hour! He eventually settled in Sudbury, Ontario, a smallish mining city in northern Ontario, which had, and still has, a thriving Italian diaspora. He was from the north of Italy, where the natural friendliness, generosity, and just general all-round niceness of people translated to here. The people that you met on your "yes" day remind me so much of those people. What a glorious day for you, your friends and family. It's easy to say "yes" when you are in the midst of these lovely Italians.

Once when living in Alaska my wife and I missed our flight because of weather so we were at a restaurant in Anchorage and started talking to the couple next to us and they invited us to their house for dinner that night. It was Christmas Eve and they were from Venezuela. That night was the best food and we felt so welcomed with all their friends and family.

The stretch of coast between Bagnara and Scilla is called the purple coast due to the purple reflections of the water, it is incredible to swim in it. But even more incredible is the view from Aspromonte, the high mountain overlooking the Strait of Messina. The view ranges from the Aeolian Islands to Etna, and when Etna and Stromboli erupt, the flows are visible at night. But Bagnara is known for being the birthplace of Loredana Bertè and her sister Mia Martini, two excellent singers.

The first memory of my life, as a three-year-old : six fishermen carrying a huuuge swordfish from their (sailing!) boat across the beach in Positano, Campania, Italy (just south of Naples) in 1953. Not a single hotel there then. War widows rented out rooms. Paradise for a kid: sunshine, pasta, pizza and gelati, donkeys everywhere, and everyone LOVED children. I sort of reconise the mood ...

I have sailed past Bagnara many many times when I was on the Coral Sea. I instantly recognize the town by the stone forts and the bridge on top of the mountain. I wish I had known the name so I could have visited . It looked so beautiful.
Keep up the good work, Lee.

Fabulous video and a testament to the friendliness and hospitality of Italians! Nowhere in the world sings to my souls like Italy does. And yes, our best adventures in life have been when we got lost, or decided to abandon our carefully crafted plans and just live in the moment. Stick to the "Yes Man" philosophy - it's a winning strategy!

I love this video 😍❤I think this is my favorite one. From a young age I have been a very adventurous person. Change and uncertainty has never scared me and I welcome it. This is what really living is all about, saying yes and getting out of your comfort zone because you never know where the day will take you. Just beautiful ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for such a beautiful video. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
