  • One of the most promising acts of the contemporary Techno scene steps into the spotlight for our Tech Talk series here, namely BEC, an unfaltering talent with releases on the likes of Pan Pot’s Second State, Carl Cox’s Intec, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode, Monika Kruse’s Terminal M and Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave since her inaugural release back in 2016.
    In March of 2020 BEC also launched her own self-titled imprint with the hypnotic and thunderous ‘Time Illusion’.
    Here we gather some further insight into how BEC’s raw and powerful productions come to fruition, alongside a walkthrough of the numerous tools she’s utilising in her studio both in and out of the box.

    Lots of great perspectives here! I would like to begin utilizing Live with hardware in the way she does, because I can understand getting too deeply into playing around with the gear and avoiding committing those ideas in a way that moves tracks forward. I appreciate her perspective on this, because too often DAWs are treated as the inspiration killer -- but hardware can also drain energies if the work there doesn't seem to move ideas forward.

    1:20 For me, it's exactly the opposite: when I spend too much time in Bitwig Studio or Ableton Live, I'm getting lost in details and have a hard time finishing things. Interesting how different things work for everybody, individually.

    Great video! Lots of good tips here, like recording things as audio quickly to not linger on details, arranging as one goes, trying to finish creative parts in a day etc... I'm curious about what BEC uses for sync between Ableton Live and the TR-8S and other devices with a sequencer. I'm with the ERM Multiclock, love it, just curious if it works well with other solutions.

      You could also try to make loops; then hit rec button and record a quick sketch of an arrangement, then arrange. I do it like this. Works really well.

    • @iwillnevergetone5
      @iwillnevergetone5 Год назад +1

      not quite. this is year of acquisition plus you can get tons of gear at "price" aka a fraction of the cost (and sometimes for free) depending on various deals and work-related trade offs. trust me, it's possible in various ways besides paying full price

    • @badlefthook624
      @badlefthook624 Год назад

      I'd say she worked hard to be able to afford all of that gear, so what's your point? I doubt she's selling drugs or robbing houses on the side.

      An up-and-coming European DJ famous enough to be on this program easily make 1500-5000€ per set when out playing. A good agent can get then 3-4 of those a week. Unless you create "expenses" for youself, such as building a studio, you're just giving your money away to the government for nothing.

    I'm always surprised when I see pro's using the TR-8s.
    I hate that thing with a passion.
    It's like an expensive toy, not a proper professional drum machine, to me.

    • @wackerburg
      @wackerburg Год назад

      Interesting perspective! It really looks like what you decribe, but I never used one. Can you give some more details why you hate that machine so much? I got a TR-8 just because I wanted to give it a try and did not like it after the first encounter. Maybe because I anticipated it as an all-in-one-version of the 909, 808 and also both the 707 and 727. Since I have an love the original machines, the mistake I made was to compare them directly. But then, I revisited the TR-8 and approached it with a different mindset: to use it on its own. Exploring its boundaries and limits. And then when I stayed within these, I now see it as a unique Roland drum machine and for the prive it's fun and can sound and groove interesting imho.

    • @SH_Hof
      @SH_Hof Год назад

      @@wackerburg I don't like how you can't copy and paste sequencer pages without pausing the device.
      I can't stand the fact that the TR8s has only one knob for effects per track.
      The menus are really really clunky.
      You can only load samples from an sd card and not straight into the device.
      I only ever heard the TR8s with it's factory samples and quite frankly I always found 90% of those pretty terrible.
      The pitch knob has a really low range making it basically unusable for tons of samples. The device also felt pretty cheap to the touch.
      There were some more, but those are the details I remember from the top of my head.
      I'm not sure if there was a way to program probabilities into the step sequencer, but I believe no, so that's also a point.
