- Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’, released in 1977, is one of disco’s all-time great tracks, reaching number one in the US dance charts in 1978. Its iconic synth lead, created with the classic ARP Odyssey synth, remains one of the genre’s most memorable melodies.
Ahead of the release of his 31st studio album, DNA, FACT met Cerrone at his studio to find out how he made ‘Supernature’ and just how much music production techniques have changed over the past 40 years by talking us through his new track, 'The Impact'.
DNA is out now on Because Music.
Director : Samy La Famille
Camera : Alexandre Leger
Remember this artist name because he doesn't get enough credit for his contributions to the Disco Era. This man produced some of the most iconic tracks in that time period. Not just a national treasure but rather a global treasure. Thank Marc Cerrone for the beautiful memories you created in a time period that I will never forget. Keep producing your music. You haven't even touched the potential creativity that is still inside you.
Agree. There are quotes and memories to play with playing playfully.
Momus also does it quite well, dealing with age and keeping the balls in the air.
AGREED ! thank you!
The synth people in here definitely know him but I agree, He doesn't get enough credit
Even better was Bob Sinclar's remix album called "Cerrone by Bob Sinclar" funnily enough

Good to see Cerrone for the first time in all these years. I was 13 when Supernature came out and it was one of the first records I ever bought. I'll never forget playing this over and over again on my uncles stereo system complete with disco lights and getting totally lost in the rhythm. A total classic.
That was my age then, too! I heard it in junior high school, they didn't call it middle school back then. My film teacher used to play it while we worked on cel animations. The intelligence and atmosphere of that album was a precursor to the industrial dance music ("IDM") of the '90s, like Front 242.
Grown-ups were doing pretty much the same thing ;-)
Cerrone, un génie musical 🎼👂🏻Que de souvenirs 🪩
I've never stopped playing Supernature since I found the record many years ago. I never get tired of it.
Exactly...I never get tired of it either
I became a victim of the song a few months ago. I'm still wondering how I didn't hear it sooner.
A truly remarkable man. His enthusiasm is infectious, his music mesmerising. The epitome of the modest, unassuming genius. 👏🏿
Super
I was 14 when I got Supernature on vinyl 40 years ago. I would blast it everyday. I still love it! Long live Cerrone!
je suis music is great too.
This man is a genius. Disco was incredible it made people sane again.
aka "Mad Dad" As a club DJ for a number of years
played quite a bit of Cerrone's music and his music
kept the dance floor filled.
Growing up in Harlem, New York (with family) we've exclusively heard my older brother play this song "Supernature" and album "Cerrone 3" in heavy rotation. Had no other option but to enjoy listening to it. Amazing to hear Cerrone explain how it was originally constructed. Late 70's early 80's hip-hop DJ's modified Cerrone's live performance of "Rocket In The Pocket." They slowed down the speed of the break part of the song for sampling.
"Supernature" reminds me of what someone said about "I Feel Love" - "It's like being on drugs without doing drugs".
Donna Summer (with Giorgio Moroder = disco / dance music producer)
My dad used to play this over and over again during Halloween in the 80's and it always intrigued and scared me. Especially the picture on the 8 track lol. Then I heard it or a version on Benny Hill. This song has a special place in my heart and I still want to hear the full story on what it is about...this has answered some of my questions. Thank you!
Magnifique!!
This is a big blaireau ! 😂
My father brought Cerrone's album back in the 70's when it first came out... It was the weirdest album cover I had seen at that time... completely different to anything I had ever seen and at 9 years old unbeknown to me then would be one of the most influential albums my father would play!.. especially Supernature.. It would lead me to Kraftwerk... Tangerine Dream and then the 80's explosion into synthesiser music... Gary Numan.. Thomas Dolby... Howard Jones... OMD... Depeche Mode... The Human League and many many more amazing artists!!... All from just one song!!... Thankyou so much Mr Cerrone!!! 😊.. from a now 52 year old.🤓
"Days Of Pearly Spencer" by Trademark is a good listen.
@@lewisner Learned something from this comment, thought Marc Almond wrote that, cheers
@@niknayme3754 actually it was written by David McWilliams but all the versions I have heard are good ruclips.net/video/4VDS8uArR0A/видео.html
One of my top disco songs of all times. I was only 7yrs old. Love it
Supernature was just an inspiration of God through Cerrone. People i knew were crazy about that jam back then and still badass today. Wish somebody would make shit that good today!!! Long live Cerrone!!
There's the rub. There are inspirations still composing out there, but they are hard to find because the technology is dumbed down so that everyone is a producer, everyone is a DJ, everyone sucks!
There is so much amazing music out there today
Great video, I remember this in 78 as a 14 year old and loved ever since.
I have this on vinyl, walked into my shop and bought it instantly, such a classic.
Without even hearing it, I bought my first Cerrone album (Love In C Minor) in 1976 purely based on its striking artwork (the US version with the clenched hands) and because it was in my local shop's "DISCO" bin. 44 years later and I'm still a fan.
Funny you should mention the cover art because when I posted one of his songs (can't remember now, memory lapse now and then), I was censored by FB for what they considered below their "standards". The photo was of a minifridge with the nubile form of a naked woman, whose body was so laid flat and her bosom so flat, she could have been a naif or a waif! It was ART.
I love the hooked bass riff that goes with that song. Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun Thun, and the female speaking voices, one I believe was with Carrie Lucas. Alec R. Constantinos was known with putting that in Cerrone songs.
But did you know, the lyrics were done my Lene Lovich
“Give Me Love”...one of my favorites, don’t forget the drum skills he possesses
He's one of the best drummers!
Loved those Translucent coloured Ludwigs. I think Space used a set on Magic Fly too.
Agree
Give me love is my favourite too
Thank you for the music.... genius ... supernature, in the smoke ...
Whish you all the best 👏👏👏
Love Cerrone for Ever.❤️❤️❤️❤️..
Un gros WOW à Cerrone 👍 un artiste formidable 🫶
Because of you, Jean Michael Jarre and Kraftwerk, music is my life. What I learned in music I learned from you and Supernature when I was a little kid. Thank you Marc, from the bottom of my heart💙

FRENCH TOUCH BABY !!! ... BIG RESPECT MARC CERRONE ... DISCO FOREVER ...
OUI
French touch baby? that doesn't sound right....
Merci.
What? I always thought Cerrone was a band, or at least a slender camp guy from New York who had died of Aids. And now I find he is a snarling hairy, snail-eating Frenchman!? I haven't been so shocked since I was twelve and discovered that the guy and gal behind "Body Talk" (Imagination) were two guys! Life is full of surprises. I was listening to Jean Michel Jarre as a 7 year old, and now he looks younger than I do. The French have all the fun.
And John Elton's name is actually Elton John! Those surprises keep coming! ;-)
@@Alyric-now Huh John Elton?
@@artfartzy Humour.
@@Alyric-now aah hehe wasnt sure if you were joking or not :)
I remember Cerrone looked like Eddy Shoestring did in the seventies (ask your Grandad). I bought the album ‘Supernature’ -lovely gatefold package with a painting of Cerrone on a chariot . Happy Days.
Great video. Would have loved to have heard more about Kay Garner's brilliant vocals and Lene Lovich's lyrics on this, too.
Thanks for putting this out. Cerrone is one of the four Disco gods, and many of us danced for hours to his music. It still sounds excellent.
Besides Giorgio Moroder, who are the two other gods?
After the pure brilliance of "Love in C minor" and the lackluster copy of "Cerrone's Paradise", "Supernature" was a shock to the system! Fortunately I gave it a chance and realised it was progression. Something Cerrone was never frightened of. Glad I am here in 2020 and he is still going strong and never forgot his roots!!
This has to be one of my all-time classic disco tracks! Absolute masterpiece.
Thank you for knowing the difference between commercialized disco and Real Disco. Many of us were very sad when the BeeGees came out with the commercial stuff. Real Disco is way better.
Cerrone you are a legend, the disco-dancers bow at you!
Cordialement. Pascal
(ps) Toute ma jeunesse.
With my hard-earned pocket money I bought my first Cerrone album right after it was released in 78, I was a little kid not tall enough to reach it on the shelf. The guy from the record shop had to get it for me.
Stand the test of time. Outstanding Music Producer
real perfect track from Cerrone, my favorite 70's music!
For thirty years this song is in my head! At times it has become very scary...
Come back when you've heard it for 47 years 😂
Climax brought me here ! legend !
Maximum respect and ammiration, master Jean Marc. Thank you Fact for having poster this interview.
Cerrone, one of my musical heroes, Disco 4 ever
Supernature was, is and always will be, ahead of its time. Masterpiece.
Danny Tenaglia did a solid mix of it too. Elevating it for a more contemporary audience.
Magic ! ! ! I totally get his comment regarding how it's so easy now to find sounds but takes so much longer to make a finished track. The old days of having less gear and no plugins meant you made what you had work harder and you made it work!
Legend. and man, what a track...
Noting to add, you said my feelings exactly
Viva cerrone
And one of the most difficult to mix out of, as a DJ. There are only two points to logically do it, and before this digital age, if you missed it, ya bernt!
Bref, simple et efficace. Merci Cerrone!
I grew up listening to Cerrone.
My speaker system suddenly sounded better 🤣🤣
Super nature a pure dance track that was so different to most music made in the 70s.
And then Gorgio Moroder with Donna summers.
This was classy electronic
Thank you for the Music 👌
I first heard the William Orbit remix of Erasure's cover of Supernature about 30 years ago in high school, it was an extra track on the 'Blue Savannah' CD single.
A few years later I went to school in Lille (France) and was heavily into the local techno/club scene, I used to buy records on the weekends in the local second-hand shops. I came across Cerrone's 'Supernature' on a gatefold vinyl. I had no idea who he was, didn't even know the Erasure tune was a cover at the time, but I recognised the name 'Supernature' and bought it for something cheap like 7FF just to see if was good or not.
I prefer the William Orbit remix of Erasure's cover to the original, but only probably because it had blown my mind away so much when I first heard it that nothing was ever going to make me like a different version of it. However, the gatefold of the original is awesome on so many levels, I will never give up my copy. I like to pull it out for Erasure friends so they can hear the original, Cerrone isn't super well-known among people my age in the US.
Great interview, glad to know that I understood most of it without needing to read the subtitles :)
This classic remains one of my all time favorites and to see the story of it and how it comes full circle into a new track is incredible. Cerrone is truly a pioneer in electronic dance music. This one’s well deserved all about Cerrone who is the first I was aware of back then, but the other two pioneer producer/musicians for me in this class are Giorgio Moroder and Gino Soccio. So glad I grew up appreciating good music in various styles and genres. Chicago born and raised, I still remember when those idiots called themselves blowing up Disco at Cominsky. Good music never dies. At the same time as “Disco Demolition” it was already evolving. I saw disco live on and continue into “House” and other forms and the rest as they say, is history.
Great interview! yes today it's easier with DAWs etc... Cerrone innovated in recording techniques❤

Damn man. I like his production insight.
Great to gain an insight
So pleased Cerrone credited the wonderful legendary Lene Lovich for her big impact on 'Supernature'.She also did a lot of top notch blood curdling screams for 'Hammer' horror films in those days.Reg Plasma x
Great track - Supernature, still play it today
slowing down the drums to half time and overdubbing with the synth makes the song sync even better than playing on the grid with quantize. it's tighter and more human at the same time. think i'll try this myself. dude was ahead of his time and got a nice balance of pride and humility
Come on.. It doesn't make it sync better! How could it? However, it does create a groove.. which I think is what you meant.
@@azynkron He has a real drum kit, so why did he create the bass drum tapping his finger on a mic ?

They should really start to make videos like these more frequently so that we can learn how they made tracks back in the day
Oh,Yeah! Supernature is my love!
Supernature became one of my favorite songs after first hearing it in Gaspar Noe's film "Climax", I probably will dance to it for the rest of my life

I really love to hear the life details of my favorites artists.
He's fascinating! He makes a strong statement about the quality of the music currently in vogue. "Sequencing the hard way" was the order of the early-mid 70's. He evidently get caught up in the atmosphere, the vibe of his new creation, considering he made it in one go. Thankfully, Lena Lovich made a great contribution.
I have a plenty of respect for the guy. It would be nice to run into him on the street, somewhere in France in 3 weeks.
Timeless music... Cool one!
Merci pour la Musique Monsieur Cerrone.❤
Excellent video. I am a survivor of the '70s gen of gay men and we helped propel "Supernature" to the hit status it deserved. It sounded great on a dance floor! I don't know who influenced who but Giorgio Moroder came along about the same time. I did not know Cerrone was still around, let alone that he was still making great and apparently politically conscious music so will check "The Impact" out.
Great video of the one of the pioneers of disco 🕺
Producers today dont know the struggle these guys had to endure. We are talking hours of recording just to get one sequence right. Errors can be rectified in seconds now. We owe lots to the techniques of Cerrone and Moroder etc
These so called producers of these days can't even play keyboard.
Thanks for edumacating the "young" who never carried a crate of records! Oh, I'm sorry, records are vinyl disks that need a turntable to be played upon. Yes, and a turntable is a device you can't hold in you hand ...
@@padmad3k63 I resemble that remark!
@@up2itru I'm not an old dude at all. You got butthurt because you know I'm right. What many young men don't understand is you can learn A LOT from the old crowd. But it is a fact that most young "producers" can't produce anything decent due the lack of skills mainly playing keyboard; understanding music theory.
@Hernán Hardy Go look at synth demos, most of them suck. Usually it's just one guy who plays some random notes trough an arpeggiator while changing the filters over and over. Seems like every kid with a pirated version of Fruity Loops can call himself a producer nowadays lol. Go listen to Synthwave, it used to be good till those kids "discovered how awesome the 80s used to be" and completely ruined the genre with their crap.
Love that song! 🎶❤️🙏
The Master @ Work!! Massive Respect!! ❤️❤️🥰😉👍😎👊
"But then it was missing a kick. So i recorded it tapping a mic like everyone did back in the day."
God dam. When i first started and got my hands on a mic, i remember experimenting with recording knocking sounds with a mic, including tapping the mic, all because i wanted that whack and knock of the kick drums i liked from records, and by accident i found it wasn't too bad. But i just didn't know how to treat the audio after to make it work. Love this craft !
I love Cerrone. It’s a shame we do t hear about him more often. Supernature has to be a masterpiece, it’s such a catchy, groovy, electronic, atmospheric, disco song. With fast drums and rhythmic and mighty synthesizers, it makes for a really superb and excellent song. His other song The Impact I haven’t listened to, but from a snippet of a remake on Logic Pro that he did, it sounds equally atmospheric and brilliant! What a musical legend and one of the early strong pioneers of electronic disco music.
I am so deeply fond of "Supernature". My film teacher in 7th grade played this album while we worked on cel animations. I was entranced with the spookiness of it, compared to other disco/dance music, which was about nothing but dancing and fucking. (And often with "dancing lyrics" being merely an acceptable way of singing about fucking.) I bought Cerrone 3 and played it over and over again. Then I bought other albums by him and was so disappointed. That atmospheric storytelling was absent, the science fiction wasn't there. It was basic disco about dancing and fucking. Just today I discovered Lene Lovich actually wrote the lyrics to "Supernature". That explains a lot! I do want to hear "The Impact", as it seems he's now revisiting that territory I was so fond of again!
