Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

Just wanted to share something, maybe it helps. When I was younger I always wanted to hear the best speaker, the wittiest, the one with all the andictdotes. It was really uplifting for a couple of hours...but although it sounds so good I cant seem to find a way to use it in daily practise. From experience I can say that the fastest way to some relief is the shortest way. Practice good body, speech and mind, at the end of the day make an observation if there is anything I need to pay attention to and then take the action and meditate daily. Really thats all there is to it. Start with that and it will lead you. Thats why Bhante is such a great example and teacher. Because he keeps it direct.

I hear someone asking questions about hearing voices. However, if you see light, hear voices, if you feel touch and all that, there is a place for relaxation still. It might seem unlikely, but there can still be a sort of seclusion within, my body warm, my body holding me, so familiar, I am not alone. Very good tool.

Thanks for your lovely videos. My wife and I have been reading, listening and watching a lot about Buddhism recently and visit the temples in thailand every year and our monastery here in Portugal regularly.
There is so much we can relate to. There is really only one part that we find very difficult; which is the reincarnation or emptiness after death part.
My wife and I have, and always have had an incredibly strong feeling that our souls will be connected somehow forever, even after eternity. Some spiritual experiences we have shared has only strengthened this belief.
I find it very difficult to completely open up to Buddhism when the ultimate goal is to depart from eachother into a state of emptiness or reincarnation, at which point we would be separated.
I guess this could be described as a state of suffering or attachment we have for each-other. But our connection never feels bad, only good.
It’s one impermanence I we can’t, don’t want to accept or actively support.
Is there any place in Buddhism for a belief that souls could be connected indefinitely?
Maybe we have misunderstood the emptiness, reincarnation part.
Thank you from both of us 🙏

    Thank you, Bhante!
Your comment on how we have a natural desire to "get out the anger" by breaking or hitting things reminds me of some places that operate here in the US (and possibly other places around the world as well) where you can pay money to break various objects such as plates, lamps, cups, drywall, etc. inside the building. They offer clubs, crowbars, hammers, and even chainsaws that you can rent to aid you in the "anger outlet". I've never been myself, but I've heard people from work that have gone and told me about it and it does sound quite tempting. I guess my question is, are places like this compounding and enabling the problem of incorrect anger processing? Or are they providing a safe place to let it go?
    Sukhi Hotu!

Thank you Bhante, So obviously I see everything as real. But I always thought that Buddhas created miracles not to show off but to demonstrate that truth is not an appearance. appearance is a phenomenon that we can create trough cause and effect.. Anyway Im not there yet, still suffering although much less.

It is my understanding that because we created what we are: god has no part in this. My question about the moses fable was when this human asked god: what are you? God replied I am what I am. To me this means that god is not a concept we can understand. Now if the Buddha has said everything is based on causes and conditions that we have put into place I would assume that Buddha would say God is irrelevant.. What did the Buddha say was really the question.

I have a question. In the Vinaya it says that monks are not allowed to own money. How are you accepting money through donations? Is a lay follower running your finances?

    • @englishmonk
      @englishmonk  Месяц назад +1

I do not use money. There are some costs met by kind donations online and handled by lay supporters. Be happy and stay well.

I think you're more of a cat looking main character. Like, I have a body that I am renting, but I am much more beautiful than just that. I am going to show you something I made, to me it represents letting go of dukkha, because I am not that. I have to believe that. Like, one time I thought "Wow, this is hell. This is actually hell!" I could not believe it. I will tell you when it's finished.

My wife is Chinese and she speaks fluent English. Still she complains that it is hard to explain to the doctor. They have public health services but if you can’t communicate it’s really hard to get help. Bhante went to public health and they gave him medication that could have killed him. The most practical way esp if you don’t speak the language is to go private and for that you need cash. So I consider it very logical
