    What would be an interesting video is a recording of the previous owner plying his engineering skills that got it into that condition.

    Nothing is better than free. I have five riding mowers, two push mowers, and an air compressor. I got them all for free. None ran when I got them. All but one of the riding mowers run today, and both of the push mowers and the air compressor are getting used regularly. I spent less than $150 in parts combined on all of them.

    Nice job. You could stick a flanged plastic bush, one that fits tightly in the handle frame, on the end of that bale arm to stop it from slipping across.

    The cable guide oiler is nearly as cheap as the roll of electrical tape you used to make your gooey mess. I think i paid $5.99 shipped from Amazon. I appreciate that you include the original post and parts with prices in your videos, it really brings home the point of how inexpensive a proper repair could be.

    This video saved the day for me. Found 22" self propelled Craftsman on the street and determined it had no spark. Was about to tear it apart when you showed me to check the bail cable. That was the ticket! Turns out the cable was so badly crimped/damaged that it wouldn't move. Clamped the mower end of the cable assembly with pliers and it started right up. Now I just need to buy a replacement cable. Thanks.

    Had random people dropping mowers, tractors, snow blowers , you name it off at my garage. Don't know how it started. Every day a new pile lol. Anyway there seemed to be a thing going on where Id get rusted out Briggs mowers than ran great and brand new looking non running Tecumseh's. So I just bolted the briggs engines on the other decks.

    Nice win. The main reasons these things end up on the street are , 1. Most people have neither the skill and/or time to diagnose, get parts, fix and, 2. The thought of a repair bill where labor cost is high.

    Lucky for you and myself that we live in a throw away society. No one wants to take the time to get things fixed any longer. Most people as soon as there's an issue they will run out and buy something new.
    A few years back I answered an ad for an 8-ft fiberglass step ladder. They weren't very far from my house so I grabbed my pickup truck which is a 8-ft bed F-150. When I started talking to the gentleman that was selling the ladder we needed to go to the back of his home to his workshop that he made out of a shed. We started talking the next thing I know he's pulling out a brand new lawn mower with a key start. He went on to explain that he had it for two summers and only was able to use it twice on account of mechanical failure. He said I will just get this to you to get it out of my way. As I'm putting the ladder and the mower in my truck he said will you be interested in some other things. I said depends I don't bring a lot of money with me when I answer an ad. He told me no problem I want to give this stuff to you if you want it. He gave me a couple more lawn mowers a industrial tiller 10 unopened roof shingles that he did not use on his shed. When I finally got home backing into my driveway my pickup truck was sitting so low from all the stuff he gave me and all I paid for was the ladder which was $40.
    I was able to get everything running with mostly no money out of pocket except for maintenance items. And when I have a friend or family or someone in the neighborhood that doesn't have the money to buy their own lawn mower I will normally just give them one. In most cases I don't even ask for the money that I put into that particular mower.
    I enjoy watching all of your videos.

      Lucky for us or I would not have any content for my channel. In my area, it is also hard to find a repair shop. I remember (before I started fixed equipment) I dropped my lawn tractor off for repair in May and got it back in late August. Luckily I had another, but I can see why people do not want to bother getting something fixed because of the time and expense.

    Briggs&Stratton have tough engines, I have an 675exi (5 years old, people say that the newer ones are trash) but I used it very much, and did some experiments on it, it still has the exact same power, it starts from the first pull, great engine, even that it has a plastic camsfaft, I am not too woried about that, briggs know what they do

    My biggest advice is, if you service a lot of Machines; do not use the “ proprietary” oil. I suggest buying pennzoil ultra Platinum High mileage, is one of the best oils next to amsoil(Watch a video by projectfarm testing the oils) . At $21-23 for 5 quarts (online order). Vs the $5-7 per quart (based on 2020 oil prices for toro and briggs at a TSC store and a RK store).
    for brand Specific oil.
    Here’s the math. 6 • 5 = $30 USD
    {for lower quality oil}
    Or $23 for 5 quarts {higher quality oil.}

    The safety bail is a pain. It digs into my hands and they are hurting after 20 minutes.
    I bet that's what that pipe clamp was for. But even with a pipe clamp or anything else holding the bail down it's still hurts my hand because that thin rod digs into my hands. I tried covering it with numerous things. I end up mowing the lawn with a towel wrapped around the handle several times.
    I found some plastic covers that snap onto the rod to give it a better shape. But it always pinches me.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 года назад +1

      Some mowers have plastic wrapped around the handle with a grove. When you out the nail down it goes into the grove. In theory it is an improvement, but the bail still push up and is bothersome. I just picked up my first one with variable speed drive. Instead of a bail it has what looks like a bike brake level. Seems to be much easier on the hand.

    I have no spark on B&S. Question: why does the metal tab that the kill switch wire connects to connected to ground? I thought the idea of the kill switch was to ground the coil. But the tab it connects to is already grounded. I have two such mowers both have same grounded tab condition, but one has spark, one doesn't. I suspect I didn't understand the kill mechanism?

    Love your work it’s so helpful. I have a 12 year old craftsman 7.5 190cc which I think runs high. What am I to do to fix this.

    James to make your job a bit easier how about setting a work bench up to work at a good height good for your back and ability to work at a good height in front of you to work at a good height with out bending over all the time ! Better lighting and easier to work that is what happened to me always bending over resulted in having two back surgeries

    I know you couldn't possibly find all the torque specs for all the bolts & nuts you tighten so do you just have the wrench set on a certain number like 25 ft lbs or something like that that you feel comfortable with ? Good video !

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 года назад +1

      I can gauge it based on bolt size, material and experience from other engines where I can find the torque specs. Carbs I usually torque to 60 inch lbs. Blades 35-40 ft lbs.

    • @norge696
      @norge696 3 года назад +1

      Most bolts can be tightened by feel. If you're worried about over torquing hold your ratchet at the top near the socket. As for air filter boxes I tighten using a 6in extension with a deep well socket without a ratchet. in my opinion flywheel nuts and blades are the most crucial when it comes to torque specs.

    When you tip mowers on their side to service the blade how do you block the breather tube so oil does not run ? My lawn boy always smokes for several minutes on restart if I service the blade.
