I’ve been told that I need to get my caffeine consumption under control by multiple people but this is the first thing that has genuinely made me think about my reliance on caffeine as well as why I got so defensive when people told me I needed to stop. Anyways, I’ve lessened my consumption from about 300-600mg daily to 0-150mg. I plan on going completely off of it for a period of time fairly soon and possibly re-introducing it on occasion and in moderate doses further into the future when I’ve proved to myself that I am no longer reliant on it. This is anecdotal of course but back when I was in college I was drinking 3-5 cups a day. I think this is one of the reasons I had such bad anxiety at the time. I remember one day I was studying for a math final and had like my 5th cup of coffee that day and I completely lost it. I thought I was having a heart attack. Of course it could of been multitude of other things that contributed to this but I definitely think that much coffee contributed to the physical effects of that panic attack. I've since then cut down to a cup every other morning and I can definitely see an improvement overall with my anxiety.

I gave up caffeine and it was the best decision I made in my life for my health. When I consumed caffeine, I did not reach deep states of sleep and I was always tired. I was also extremely alert and would wake up at any noise in the middle of the night.
This state of alertness aggravated a anxiety problem I have (basically the muscles in my neck would get extremely tense out of nowhere) and to "treat" this a doctor prescribed me Valium, shortly after I realized that this was really fucked up, so I cutted off every single drug, and now I'm better than ever.

I tried to quit coffee for years until I finally got it a few months ago. Now I can sleep properly but then I never felt drowsy, I had to go to bed and force myself to sleep and had trouble waking up. I can't stress enough how much impact this had on my mental health, forcing yourself to sleep is not the same thing as sleeping when you are tired and as humans we need the latter. Now I fall asleep easily and wake up between 6 and 7am without an alarm. My teeth turned yellow, unfortunately I didn't see any progress since I quit. At least they are not getting worse, which I'm sure they would if I didn't stop.

  • @dblifts8887
    @dblifts8887 2 года назад +11

Honestly, you posit some good points in this video. I’ve been drinking coffee since I was around 14 years old, and I really enjoyed the taste, as well as the feeling of alertness it gave me after consuming it. I’ve always had a bit of coffee here and there, and I was always a decently active kid so I thought it was perfectly fine to have some coffee before I would train since I thought I could make use of the energy. It wasn’t until last year that I started to use preworkout, especially since I really wanted to hit big numbers in the gym. But honestly, after achieving some big PRs that I’m proud of, I’m not so fussed about making gigantic leaps in progress and much rather take the slow route from here on out. Besides that, it’s not like I’m a construction worker, or as you said, someone who works night shift (not anymore at least), so it’s not like I absolutely require the stimulants to get through the day. Even then, my father works manual labour to this day, yet he doesn’t drink anywhere near the amount of caffeine he does in his typical routine, and that’s on top of also going to the gym and playing soccer for him! All these things considered, I’m gonna start weening off the caffeine slowly, if I want to enjoy coffee for the taste, I’ll just have decaf.

I've been drinking black coffee since age 13. I love the taste, the ritual, the bonding, the process of making it. I also like the cuisine aspects of where the coffee comes from. And I've been drinking it so long (I'm 39), it does nothing for my energy levels. But I've had no illusions about my addiction. Coffee affects my sleep negatively and contributes to my racing mind. It still makes me have an hour-long bleary-eyed waking up process in the morning. I need it for every longish drive. I enjoy decaf a lot too. Just a quick comment, there is a documented phenomenon called the “backfire effect”. The backfire effect happens when you criticize a “core belief” of someone (in this video the backfire effect happens to people when you criticized people’s coffee addiction). This also happens all the time with people when you talk to them about politics or religion. The backfire effect is interesting because when people experience it the “fight or flight” areas of the brain light up like a firework.

It is very ironic and telling, that it is currently 1:55 AM over here and I am drinking coffee to stay awake, to try and tire myself for the next night, so I can sleep LMAO. It's an old strategy of mine to stay awake all night when my sleep schedule gets fucked, to restart myself, but as you've said, this takes a toll.
And what you've said starting at 48:48 really made me think and look back at my own coffee habits. I never drank coffee until like 2011, when people at work pushed me towards it, because they said it was just a good thing to do for work. Over the coming years, it slowly became a habit of mine to drink coffee, to the point where i would drink it every day, often several times a day. And then, around the end of 2017, i started to actually drink alcohol on a regular basis too, when before I would never do that either. And then that also became a daily routine, to the point where now i have to give all my money to relatives, so that I can't buy it anymore LOL. As you've mentioned, most seem to go with the coffee and cigarettes combo, but I seem to have developed coffee and booze combo, which now that I think about it, is likely the real reason why my sleep is horrible, and I've developed brain fog and memory problems. My sleep has been fucked up by these drugs for several years at this point.

Late to the party, but I quit coffee this past year and switched to matcha. This was such a game-changer for me that I am shocked. Matcha focuses your mind and lasts for hours, despite having a much lower caffeine content, whereas coffee seemingly only lasts until you blink before you need another cup. I do love the smell of coffee, and the taste of it, but I will probably never drink it again unless I am at my girlfriend's place and her parents are making it, or unless I'm on vacation.

Great points. I would argue that, for the most part, the majority of people who drink coffee on a regular basis suffer no ill side effects. They drink it regularly, their body is used to it, they don't get the jitters or anything. I haven't found a study that shows a negative side effect of a moderate amount of caffeine daily. If all caffeine supply worldwide halted, the 1% of extreme "users" would get like a headache for a day and that'd be it.
If you drink coffee for taste and/or like the ritual but aren't chasing the "stim", fuck it keep doing it. Its nice and is good for you overall. We don't need to live like pleasure deprived monks.

Im probably never gonna fully quit caffeine and coffee. But this video opened up my eyes to the fact of the matter that it isnt healthy to take in anywhere from 200-600 mg of caffeine a day, and breaks are necessary. I cant remember the last time i took a break that lasted more than a two or three days. Its so easy to build a coffee reliance or for it to become a crutch due to the normalization of such things in modern society and cultures throughout the world. And i know it wasnt your intent but there is a certain strong character element to not drinking coffee and i think i lost some of that sometime during my college years and caffeine, weed and alcohol became some of of my best friends and were perfectly normal to a sizable percentage people i associated with. As a teen i rarely consumed coffee or caffeine products that and even when i did it was at random times or if i was offered it so as not to be rude. It wasnt so routine although my parents did indulge in the morning routine while i indulged in pan con chocolate (to all my Mexican hermanos out there who know jaja). Thankfully i was introduced pre workout supplements after a solid 6 months to a year of lifting and 2 years of track n field. Afternmy introduction it wouldnt be a routine too mucu bc part of me knew it wasnt super healthy or good to rely on it and also bc i just simply couldnt afford it at times or would share with friends. But part of me gave into that temptation and started building and addiction to it in my early 20s. Im 27 now and ive prolly been hooked on caffeine and not knowing it for 4-6 years, or at least not wanting to admit it bc part of me always knew that this wasnt good. Although i will admit i prolly will never fully quit i am deff gonna take a good break right now and take breaks much more regularly, obviously cut down on my caffeine intake when i do indulge and definitely eliminate as a routine. Man its gonna be hard looking at that brewer in the morning as i get ready lol. Great vid man!

While coffee is a diuretic it doesn’t have a net negative effect on hydration. Perhaps psychologically total hydration could be lower by Xml since you thought you drank Y amount but technically only drank X-Y amount
The nail in the coffin for any supposed benefits of coffee is that the body adapts to the caffeine consumption such that initial benefits go away after some time of habitual consumption
I am extremely physically dependent and sensitive to coffee to the point where I notice decreasing habitual intake by 1 mg (30 to 29mg for example). It takes me weeks to taper down as a cold turkey approach would leave me bed bound for days. In that process now after quitting a while ago and not noticing any benefits. But maybe 4 weeks wasn’t enough time for the body to correct itself

Point i'm trying to make is maybe the key is "moderation" through the discipline of not over consuming, and knowing how much caffeiene your consuming and whether it is needed for the work your doing. This is not solely directed at you, just me disagreeing with your point about "recovery" and the general idea that caffiene = bad.

This came out at a crazy time. I had recently quit taking all caffeine in any form. Pill, or pre-workout. I quit drinking coffee about a year ago just to cut down on needless costs. Honestly, I took about 1500mg of caffeine a day for about 2 years (4 years ago) 5-6 days a week. I felt like I needed it due to working 50-60 hours a week of manual labor, and then going to the gym right after.
Once I stopped chugging energy drinks I really didn't give my body a chance to feel better and swapped to 250mg caffeine pills, and pre-workout on my 3 workout days. I took around 3-4 of those EVERY day, and have been since Friday of last week. I have not had any "withdraw" symptoms. No headaches no shakes, etc. I guess I have had 1 symptom I honestly feel quite a bit better overall - More energy, less moody. May be placebo, but I doubt it.

heyo, this video is older but wanted a fresh comment ab pre-workout, I am 23 and I definitely agree that there are lots of people, friends included, with serious caffeine addictions, and they need to seriously look at their habits of drinking lots of coffee and double or even triple scooping pre, and knock that shit off asap. however, nowadays there are lots of pre-workouts with no-stimulants that are very effective imo, I personally take a half serving of a stimulant version and then half to a regular scoop of no-stim, and that's the only caffeine I get in my day, no coffee basically ever. I think it is an excellent balance and allows for optimal performance in the gym as I consider myself someone who trains very hard, and feel I do not have the caffeine addiction and side effects, and have no issues sleeping at night or staying asleep. all in all consume in moderation and don't let yourselves go down the rabbit hole. edit- i also workout after my school/work is completed so i do not know how it would differ if i lifted in the morning then went about my day.

I was addicted to caffein. It started very slow, I had been drinking coffee since I was 15. I've always had problems with falling asleep (since I was past the toddler stage) so coffee was a blessing for me. That was until my consumption started to ramp up and I was fully addicted. Started my morning with a big mug of coffe, around 0,5L, at 9 when I had a break from work I would take 2 cups of coffee, at lunch 1-2 cups, at 15 one cup and I would bring or buy a high caffein dose energy drink (180mg) before hitting the gym. My insomnia problems got worse. I got sick all the time, stagnation in the gym and was not functioning at all without coffee. I had enough and early 2019 I just stopped cold turkey
The first two weeks was painful, alot of tiredness and headache, but it got better. After 2 months I would sometimes drink green tea, some days of the week and I stayed away from sodas (more caffein than you think). After a year I started to introduce both caffein free and caffeinated coffe just a couple of days in my weeks, because I still enjoy the taste. It's been the same since 2020. My sleep got better within a month and while I do struggle to fall asleep, it usually takes 15-20 min nowadays. I enjoy coffee a couple of days per week but I stay very cautious and if I have high work stress I don't drink it. I never drink it before the gym or in the afternoon.
TL;DR - curb your caffein addiction, it will only benefit you.

Personally there was a time where I could not sleep as much as I wanted so I was taking coffee every morning before work. At first it worked well to help me stay focused and awake, but after a few weeks, I had to take more and more, not to be focused and awake but only to be in my normal state, that's when I knew that I had to stop drinking stimulants every day. I did it progressively since stopping it at first gave me some headaches for a few days

I deeply want to sleep more than 9 hours, but I have a kid. I can't go to bed at 8pm like I want to because my 4 year old just WILL NOT go to bed until 9pm. Cortisol won't decrease for a while after that, so I end up sleeping at 9:30pm. Before I became a parent I went to bed at 8pm and woke up at 4am. Man that was a good time

    I don't drink coffee , and i disagree with u that this video doesn't concern me !
actually u saved me going down this road , cause i always thought that i was the weird one for not drinking ANY of this stuff AT ALL .. (no pre-workout , no coffee , no Energy drinks , etc)
    and always people saying :
("Coffee is so healthy with TONs of benefits and almost no cons" and every successful human drinks it and that's how to be more productive .. and don't worry about the draw back and addictions u just "DELOAD" for a week or two then go back to drinking it) ..
so i gave it ago , i HATED the taste and the smell .. but i forced myself to drink one cup each day or every other day ..
but i guess now i was in the right and i don't need to force myself and thinking my Low Energy level is because i don't drink coffee like them .
so Thanks for making this video , it helped me see that i was in the Right and i'll stay coffee free
