The main appeal of this device is that it has a 720p 4:3 screen. Someone like me who hates black bars on the left and the right would never get an RP 5 no matter how good the price is because I don’t like the wide screen. Ambernic is pretty much the only company doing big high resolution 4:3 screens. I love that they made this system. It’s the GOAT right now IMO. I never understood the appeal of wide screens on these retro systems where 90% of what you’re going to play is going to be 4:3. To me the whole point is to play the games as close to how they were when you were a kid and that means 4:3.
Nothing weird about widescreen. Especially when you want to play psp, ps2 and Wii. In fact I’d say the RP5 is the perfect horizontal device as its screen is big enough to play 4:3 and 16:9 perfectly. Ayaneo pocket dmg is the best proper high res 4:3 I’ve seen as well.
@mr-w4812why? I have so many devices if I want I high end experience. I don't want my handheld to need a grip (still not on the market at this moment) to fix the ergonomics and stupid stick placement for the majority of the systems it's best for, power-wise.
@@EthanCarey-p8k better screen ratio, ergonomics and cheaper because I can get anbernic devices in the Philippines with free shipping and good discounts on shoppee while RP devices I need to pay 20 dollars for shipping
I'm hoping Anbernic will release this as an "XX" version of this similar to what they did with the "Cube XX". d-pad focus, lower performance target, lower price and Linux instead of Android. Personally I have limited myself to use the Steam Deck for 3D emulation. At the same time I want the PERFECT 4:3 2D-device, and this seems to be it if it has the d-pad was at top.
I feel like this is lowkey the best N64 handheld on the market, hands down. 4:3, stick on top with ergo grip gives easy access to the “z” trigger that’s used a TON in so many N64 titles. The stretch needed to do this on the RP5/mini isn’t great.
Ooh, I want PS2, but I want 4:3 screen - not quite there yet right? I imagine Anbernic will make a very PS2-looking device when the power is properly there to get everything at 60fps 1x scale, with a control layout similar to sony and probably a cross d-pad. I've wanted a PS2 emulator for a long time - feels like we're almost there!
That's because the NTSC version of the game is targeting 60fps but only hitting 50 so there's 10 frames of slowdown. The PAL version only targets 50fps which means that it's actually running at full speed much more frequently. It's basically a difference with how NTSC and PAL regions optimised their games differently to cater to different standardised TVs in America and Europe. A game targeting 50fps and hitting 50fps is going to feel a lot smoother than a game targeting 60fps and hitting 50fps. However if it was running at full speed even at 60fps the NTSC version of the game is by far the best way to play. Hopefully that clarifies what I was talking about a bit better 😅 - Rob
@@RetroDodo YOu should turn it on High CPU Mode you can play that that game easily on FULL SPEED then... As said by others even on 1.5x speed it runs well on 60 FPS. Also F ZERO GC runs way better on my device on that mode 50+ FPS... also use DOLPHIN MMJR2 178178 which runs almost all gamecube games flawless on this device.
hi i have this ANBERNIC RG35XX H .. my problem with this hand held every time i plug my usb to go fully charge the juice .. it doesn't power on? it have orange light? but i cant turn on the power button to play some games?
I feel like the analogue stick placement makes sense for PS1 and N64 games onwards, but if you're planning on using it for older stuff then yeah the D-pad would probably be better on the top! I guess it depends on what you're going to be mainly playing on a device like this. - Rob
i dont know wht this allways happends to me i buy the retro pocket 4 pro then i try the anbernic 556 and neevr touch my retro pocket 4 no more i feel like this happend again with my retro pocket 5 and the 406h man i hate it cause i get the anbernic for free and i actually pay for the retro pockets and tbh i never used them over the anbernic i duno what magic they do but im not alone ive noticed alot of people going with anbenric even doe retro better nicer more powerfull better liked more well known and all that its so werid the screen just fits ps2 games better my rp5 is laggy and glitchy when it trys to make things 16:9
the shots in this video are amazing and makes the handheld more beautiful as it already was. well done

You don't have to have black bars, there are custom sidebars for each system
Ps2 is weard system. I think of it as a wide-screen system as that's what I had. Then again I basicly only played pro Evo.
can't you just get the retroid mini, since it's the same specs as the Retroid Pocket 5?

@@erc3338 its very2 small for me. with that screen size they shouldve gone vertical handheld
Mine is running Jak & Daxter perfectly at 1.5x res. You just need to tinker with your settings a bit more and make sure your CPU High Mode is On 😊
So many people (also reviewers) forgot that you have that CPU High mode... which make it considerable different and you can play games a lot better.
Bloody love a Rob review, glad you’re still with Retro Dodo!
I actually picked the RG406H over the RP 5
👀
Good choice
I’m sorry for that.

Yeah, they likely will produce this.
@@PixelShade they did that already. It’s called the 40XX
Please do a video about hidden ps2, Xbox 360 and Gamecube gems

For someone just starting do you recommend getting the best of the best or just something to get started???
Start with something affordable, see if you like the offerings, then go big!
rg35xx plus or rg40xxh for your first device is a good start
Grab the rgcubexx or the rg35xxsp..
These 2 are the best of the xx handhelds
He has 115 now I like his channel
Can anyone tell why the development of aether sx2 stopped?
so many ittle kids were harrassing the guy that made it to make it better make it better make it better so he said fk u guys and quit never came back
I cant believe how much i love the rg406h and the rgcubexx. 2 fantastic handhelds once you get them in your hands
Help me understand. Jak and Daxter fps went to low 50’s and it’s unplayable. So you got the Pal version which runs at 50 fps and it’s playable?

Personally, I would save up another $100 and buy a used Steam Deck over this.
Cool handheld though I love the 4:3 screen.
Still waiting for the rp5 review
dpad on bottom kills this device for me

Dpad on bottom is actually very comfortable for this handheld since its not too big
With the pc side your forgetting GPD

Yeah I also have Anbernic and RETROID and also picking up the ANBERNIC devices lol.
Run some android games
RG 406H and Retroid Pocket Mini don't have comparable specs... Retroid Pocket Mini has the same power as the Retroid Pocket 5
I thought you weren't going to review these anymore. Did you already change your mind?
