Dear nerds, in case you haven't subscribed yet. Please do me *a solid* by linking and subscribing! Since the channel is small, this really helps me out a lot. Thanks. ❤
Most people overlook the fact that the PS2 controller has pressure-sensitive/Analog face buttons. Meaning, each of the Triangle, Square, Circle and X are capable of being half-pressed and full-pressed, much like analog triggers. Games like The Bouncer and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 rely on this to work. It's frustrating to see almost nobody bring this up. At the very least only a few games took advantage of this abandoned gimmick.
It wasn't a very good idea. The buttons were (physically) designed to be digital for PS1 and have very little travel or tactile feedback, making it awkward to try to press them down partially. Nonetheless, this is indeed a necessary feature for an accurate representation of PS2 gameplay.
The emulator allows you to set a pressure modifier button. So you hold down the assigned key (L3 for example) then hit the button you want (lets say O) and it will press it at the set pressure. So if you want to lit hit circle its L3+O
@Rosabel_Believe doesn't help if the games also use L3 and R3. That's why ideally there should be additional programmable buttons, like the ones at the back of some controllers.
Finally someone who says that a 4:3 screen is mandatory on these. I'll never understand the hype for 16:9 handhelds when the goal is to play retro games. 😅
So many have 16:9 because that is what is easier to get. There just isn't a lot of 4:3 screen parts to choose from. That is why no 5" 4:3 etc, no one makes one. These companies just source what they can get, they don't make their own. I would love a 7" 4:3 OLED handheld but none exist.

I'm so glad I got to play a small part in you exploring (and enjoying) this hobby of ours. ❤️ And solid choice, btw! The RG35XX H is still one of my favorite handhelds to date. Very few horizontal handhelds are as pocketable as that one while also having sticks. :)
That's the same size as the portable screen that came out with the PSone. I've been wanting something like that too I think I'd prefer a 480p 5" than an 720p 4" handheld
as a potential first time handheld buyer, ive been itching to buy one that can (finally) do PS2 games! how does the RG406H compare to a Retroid Pocket 5 mini? i would love to see a comparison video about that ! anyways, good job Vlad!
My personal recommendation is to get the Retroid Pocket 5. The RG-CUBE and RG406H can play a healthy amount of PS2 games however the GPU holds the Handheld back when emulating some PS2 games. I think you'll be much happier with the Retroid Pocket 5. 😊
The design for this handheld is awesome. Wished it was released earlier this year. For around this price, you could purchase a retroid pocket 4 pro which performs better. If you dont mind spending a bit more, you may enjoy the RP Mini or RP5 more, better performance and screen, fewer tweaking of the settings etc.
Is this the same D-PAD from the RG Cube or ist it the fantastic SEGA Saturn D-PAD from the RG ARC? I ask because i own the ARC and was sure that the CUBE has the same D-PAD but its completely different. 😔
I just ordered one of these and the rg35xxsp and I can't wait to get them. I wanted something small and light to play 2D systems on when I need to kill time (the 35xxsp) and something to play every 4:3 console on (so everything through Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube/Wii) and this seems perfect for that.
I picked up an rg406 v partially thanks to your video and while I love it I’m kinda of new to these handhelds (this is my first) and didn’t realize there were a lot of widescreen hacks. I was wondering if I should have gotten a wider screen but I’ve been happy going with a traditional 4:3 and it’s nice to hear your reinforce that. Not only do I want it to feel like how it did for me back in the day but they were designed for this aspect ratio!

Hi Vlad, I just wanted to say I absolutely loved your video! I’m thinking about getting this Ambernic device as a Christmas gift for my 10-year-old son, and I know he’d be thrilled with it. The only thing I’m struggling with is figuring out how to set it up with actual games. Do you happen to have a tutorial or any advice on how to do this? Growing up in the era of classic consoles, I have such fond memories of playing games like Dragon Ball, Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, and more, and my son has developed a love for these kinds of games too. It would mean so much to be able to share that experience with him. Any tips or guidance you could share would be a huge help! Thank you so much!
Hi there. :) These days, you can get it witha prebuilt sd card as well. Just go through the link in my description and choose an option that has storage included. (128gb or 256gb).
The big problem with the ES-DE with this setup demonstrating the videos is the absurd amount of space it takes! If you have a large library of games, it's good to have a very large SD card too, exaggerations aside, I think that for a large library and without going through the hassle, 1TB is not absurd
@VladNerd your vids are the best btw! Its my go to for updates on Anbernic consoles. One of them was what made me order the RG35XX H console in the first place with all of your insights on it and has since been my favorite! Looking forward to many more of your future vids/updates. 👍💯
@@destinyisles5651 Brings a literal smile on my face hearing that. The RG35XX H is one of the last truly pocketable handhelds out there. Truly a work of art. I'm so glad you're enjoying it. ❤
Hello, good video, i think i'm gonna buy this little monster. Just one question, what happens if i choose the 256gb version on their website? Does it come with an SSD? And if i choose the standard version? Please let me know! Thanks
Retro looks better _TALLER_ than 4:3 tho, especially NES, SNES and PC-Engine. And GB, GBC, GG, NGPC and Pico8 are all (basically) squares! It turns out the best retro screen is either a square or 8:7.
Anbernic does better feeling and more robust hardware IMHO even if it is often kinda buggy and the software is kinda crippled. Things like gammaos help with the latter.
But how perfect is the PS2 emulation? That's what I want to know. Should I wait for anbernic to upgrade it's processor? I'm scared that next year they'll have a more powerful model at the same price.
I mean... For the stuff that's foundational to my childhood, things ran smoothly. In the worst case scenario, you might need to turn down the internal resolution scaling in the settings for some games. They'll probably release something new next year, but don't quote me on this. It's pure gut feeling from my end.
I bet Anbernic is sitting on huge stock of 820 chips and will not introduce new one till it spends them. They most likely will introduce new chip in their premium models with 5" OLED screen. And we are not likely to see 407H till end of 2025. I also doubt they will go with Snapdragon 865 - they will find a way to cut corners)
If you want no compromises on ps2 emulation, you should get a variation of the Odin 2 (original, mini or Portal). Otherwise you will need to fiddle with setting and reduce resolution to run some games.
I am really debating between this or retroid pocket 4 pro bc of the sales. I need to make up my mind quick before Xmas sales are over 😅 Edit wait wait 🎉🎉 w anber if good choice choosing vlad
Why does it feel like we already had one of these? Maybe my brain was joining together the RG cube and rg40xx and thinking a hybrid existed Still, a device this size isn't that pocketable and in my opinion why not just get a rg556, with extra screen size for stuff like Nintendo DS and PSP. I guess not everyone thinks DS and PSP are important.
The sticks on the 556 is much worse than this. 556 one has cardinal snapping, whereas the sticks on this one don't and are okay enough to play on for all the systems it can emulate.
Way better handling than RG40XXH even when playing with the d-pad on the bottom? I feel like it would be the natural horizontal upgrade for it. (Also, let's be honest between nerds, it will be your endgame until the next the better version of it they will released next month 😊😗)
@@VladNerd wow didn't know about the sticks, then the H definitely seems the way to go especially for PS2 and GameCube. Also I prefer SEGA D-Pads much more. The V has 500mah more of battery though dunno why (5000 vs 5500mah). If anytime I pick one it's gonna be a black RG406H which looks like a GameGear ❤️
@@koken2372 the V also has the same (good) sticks. What it V lacks though are analog triggers (they're not pressure sensitive), but has digital ones (normal buttons) in the back. :)
I had an rg cube which has the same performance. PS2 was really underwhelming on that system for me so I sold it for a minimal loss. I will miss how comfortable it was and I will really miss the dpad. For now, I will stick with the less comfortable but more powerful retroid pocket mini :(
I agree, I found T820 devices underwhelming. Sure you can get alot of games running, but expect compromises. I've done an excessive amount of testing on handhelds, smartphones and tablets and found something interesting. Any SoC that doesn't hit a minimum score of 3000 on 3Dmark's wildlife benchmark struggles to deliver well, on PS2/GCN content. T820 is somewhere around 1800-2000, so it's 2/3 of the way there. SD865 in the RP5 hit 3900, which gives a little extra room for upscaling and other enhancements. As a comparison the Odin 2 came in at a little under 12000, a phenomenal leap ahead of the competition, at around $80usd more than the RP5.
@@Perfectcrime87 I don't bother with judgement... The yardstick used to measure is the same one we beat ourselves with - absolutely pointless. People like what they like and are Gunna do what they're gunna do. The T820 range isn't bad at all, it simply has its limits.
One last thing I need to have the d-pad on top unless I'm going to be playing mostly PS2 GameCube well then the joystick is perfect up there so in that case yeah you're correct lololol
@@VladNerd its a good car! my irl friend still has a red miata. I used them all in nfsu until I got the nissan skyline, but miata is the fastest of the ones in the beginning
I totally agree. This form-factor is endgame for retro handhelds -- for all the reasons you mention. After enduring a year of nonsensical, over-powered, uber-niche, 1:1 handhelds, it's about time we got some horizontals that make sense to the masses (up through PS2). Pocketable is a two-edged sword. I personally prefer comfort & control over pocket-ability. But it's debatable because the best emulator is the one you have with you. The RG35XX-H probably navigates that dichotomy the best, but lacks PS2 power and a finger-strap hole to make it the perfect 3.5" pocketable -- although the aftermarket silicone cover accommodates a finger-strap. I'll definitely be picking-up an RG406H (your affiliates) but I really hope 2025 makes retro gaming great again with a slew of ergonomic horizontals inspired by the RG406H. And don't get me wrong, because I ultimately opt for 16:9 handhelds at $150+ for Android gaming, game streaming, PSP, PS3, etc. But 4:3 is more portable and sufficient through PS2, yet overlooked in mid-range to high-end handhelds in recent years.
Amazing. I'm a bit iffy on the fact that they didn't redo the lighting (which they did with the Tomb Raider 1-3 remasters). But oh well. Waited literally 21 years for something LOK related to get released again. Not complaining. 🥹
It all depends on the aspect ratio you want. But if the price difference isn't something that you mind, I'd lean on the RP5. :) The RG406H is amazing for me, but I think like the RP5 is a more-rounded general device.
@ I love the look of both honestly. Guess I’m going by your suggestion for now, just because I feel that either one I’d get, I’d love either way. Thanks! Great video as always!
lol a paid affiliate review. Not biased at all! Ambernic build quality always sucks, and their software is always behind rivals. Never listen to a review that says otherwise. Either they are paid reviews, or they cut a deal for affiliate links. Welcome to RUclips - thank me later!
I personally like Anbernic devices, as I’ve BOUGHT six of them. But for normal people who aren’t collectors/hoarders, I’d recommend the Steamdeck above any Anbernic device. The only drawback with the Steamdeck is that it’s HUGE. The sheer massive size of the Steamdeck is what made me look into Anbernics in the first place, so I could have a tiny, pocketable, all in one device.

The big problem with the ES-DE with this setup demonstrating the videos is the absurd amount of space it takes! If you have a large library of games, it's good to have a very large SD card too, exaggerations aside, I think that for a large library and without going through the hassle, 1TB is not absurd
Can you do screen on tv to play on tv like ?
Rg406H or Retroid Pocket mini? I just love amoled screens
I'll make a comparison video soon. :)
In essence, if Amoled matters a whole lot for you, then you know the answer, my nerd.
I'm wanting to buy one right now but going to wait for a bit as bought the rg35 xx h in mid march and look how many they have bought out since then 😅
Thank you sir, great vid,and channel, subbed👊💯
Thanks a lot! 🥹
THAT LOOKS SO GORGEOUS!! 😍😍😍😍
IKR? It's freaking mesmerizing!
@@destinyisles5651 Prepare for a Rg34XX early impressions vid btw, gonna try and push it tonight. It came as I was recording another one. 😆
@VladNerd Oooh I'll check it out as soon as I can! 😍 Always great to have a reference for these devices.
Enough power for PS2 and GameCube, horizontal form factor, 4:3 screen? Sounds like the Retroid Pocket Mini to me. :-)
Is there a way to get a pre-loaded handhelds
Ebay has a lot of sellers that give you pre installed games on decent sd cards aswell,I use them regularly here in UK.
Beautiful purple, reminds me of the rp3+ purple
Love the videos but this device is close to the price of an rp5 why?
Hello, good video, i think i'm gonna buy this little monster. Just one question, what happens if i choose the 256gb version on their website? Does it come with an SSD? And if i choose the standard version? Please let me know! Thanks
You'll receive a prebundled 256gb micro-sd card. :)
@VladNerd Thank you so much!!
Retro looks better _TALLER_ than 4:3 tho, especially NES, SNES and PC-Engine. And GB, GBC, GG, NGPC and Pico8 are all (basically) squares!
It turns out the best retro screen is either a square or 8:7.
I love retroid pocket devices. But having the left stick on top with the 406h and it being cheaper are really drawing me in
A bit unrelated, but I love your username!
I need to make up my mind quick before Xmas sales are over 😅
Edit wait wait 🎉🎉 w anber if good choice choosing vlad
Why does it feel like we already had one of these? Maybe my brain was joining together the RG cube and rg40xx and thinking a hybrid existed
Still, a device this size isn't that pocketable and in my opinion why not just get a rg556, with extra screen size for stuff like Nintendo DS and PSP.
I guess not everyone thinks DS and PSP are important.
The sticks on the 556 is much worse than this. 556 one has cardinal snapping, whereas the sticks on this one don't and are okay enough to play on for all the systems it can emulate.
Yes, one can never have too many usb c cables. Eveytime a new one appears, 2 had already been lost. 😂
Way better handling than RG40XXH even when playing with the d-pad on the bottom? I feel like it would be the natural horizontal upgrade for it.
(Also, let's be honest between nerds, it will be your endgame until the next the better version of it they will released next month 😊😗)
just wish it was a tad bit more powerful so all PS2 ran smoothly at 2x resolution
@@michaeltaylor4817 i wish this had the same chip as the retroid pocket 5 and an oled screen and this would be my endgame handheld
Isn't this the same than the RG406V?
Yes and no. Different form factors go a long way, plus the RG406H has analog triggers, whereas the RG406V has digital ones. :)
top video friend, then make a new video teaching how to organize the roms and bios on an original sd card
I had an rg cube which has the same performance. PS2 was really underwhelming on that system for me so I sold it for a minimal loss. I will miss how comfortable it was and I will really miss the dpad. For now, I will stick with the less comfortable but more powerful retroid pocket mini :(
The Mini is a solid choice as well. My eyesight is getting worse however, squinting has its price for me. 😆
@stevenfinch4238 don't judge me but I also have an odin 2
@@Perfectcrime87 I don't bother with judgement... The yardstick used to measure is the same one we beat ourselves with - absolutely pointless. People like what they like and are Gunna do what they're gunna do.
The T820 range isn't bad at all, it simply has its limits.
One last thing I need to have the d-pad on top unless I'm going to be playing mostly PS2 GameCube well then the joystick is perfect up there so in that case yeah you're correct lololol
10:39 Mazda Miata is the fastest starter car in NFS Underground 😅 patrician taste
I have no idea why I chose the Miata in the early 2000s, but I stuck with that car in Underground ever since. 😆
How are those Legacy of Kain Remasters?
Amazing. I'm a bit iffy on the fact that they didn't redo the lighting (which they did with the Tomb Raider 1-3 remasters). But oh well. Waited literally 21 years for something LOK related to get released again. Not complaining. 🥹
@@VladNerd you can emulate the Switch version on Android? I really wanna see how it plays on Retroid Pocket Mini
Waiting on my, as we speak 😊
make a comparison video bettwen this 556 and cube plz
Vlad help me. This or RP5!?
It all depends on the aspect ratio you want. But if the price difference isn't something that you mind, I'd lean on the RP5. :)
The RG406H is amazing for me, but I think like the RP5 is a more-rounded general device.
@ I love the look of both honestly. Guess I’m going by your suggestion for now, just because I feel that either one I’d get, I’d love either way. Thanks! Great video as always!
Welcome to the Nirvana handheld!
Now since the goalpost changed, I know want a 5 inch 4:3 handheld. 😆
Love this device
"I'll die on this hill... ANY endgame (retro) handheld needs to be 4:3"
Yes you would end up dying on that hill, because that's a battle you'd lose
Vlad ❤ Anne Bernek
wont buy a ps2 retro handhelt until they make the face buttons pressure sensitive, gran turismo 4 is just not the same without it
Do away with bezels. Paint the bezels the colour of the handheld atleast
Next up a H700 xx variant with the dpad on top.... 😂
Technically, that'd be the RG40XX H 😄
Drakenguard runs like 💩 but that kinda makes sense.
Odin 2 mini: Hold my 🍺.
Starting at only more than double the cost, too!
@christophergarcia6064 double the product let's be honest.

To say this is the ultimate ps2 hand held is a joke lol rp5 isn’t much more
lol a paid affiliate review.
Borderline perfect, but god it's ugly.
IPS for PS2 nah...... OLED with CRT filter is the way to go for 6th gen
An Odin is still better for PS2 with its bigger screen. And even that feels small looking at some PS2 games
And it starts at twice the price...
Anbernic software is cheap as sh t
All this talk of 4:3 being played how it was intended and staying true to the content, but then stretches psp.... do you know what a hypocrite is?
Sit down, dingus
@ is that really Your response? Gosh you’re so cool.
