I always assumed Piccolo's regeneration worked based on how much ki he had left. Every time nameks regrew limbs, they always seemed a bit wiped out afterward, whether it be from pain of the regrowth or the use of ki it takes to do it. Piccolo's regeneration also seemed to get stronger as he got stronger as the series went on. Maybe King Piccolo was just out of ki and could not regenerate.
he did launch several huge energy attacks a few minutes ago and was probably all tuckered out. he was also going to finish goku by physically diving down instead of using another ki blast

I always assumed that he couldn't regenerate piercing attacks, but only limbs

I guess their healing is sort of only activated as an adrenaline boost in certain situations, when their ki/ power level is low it has a slower effect rate and with the young body he got he didnt know how to acclimate his ki yet.
I guess you could say Piccolo Jr is just better at...

I kinda like the idea that regeneration is a warrior class ability. It makes a lot of sense for them to have it while dragon clan have the ability to heal others instead.
Yeah it does make them more unique if it was an exclusive class ability. Fighters would need it.

There's no reason to assume an alien egg would in any way resemble human reproduction lol. Or even concepts humans are used to from fiction, such as the abdomen or stomach, navel etc being necessary. It's totally reasonable to think that an alien egg might just start in the throat or even the brain. And grow and then be ejected from the mouth as shown lol. For all we know aliens could reproduce by tearing out their eyeballs and planting them lmfao

From an in-universe standpoint, Daimao probably didn't have enough energy to regenerate. Goku's attack was powerful enough to negate any possibility of regeneration, imo. We see Dodoria impale one of the Namekian warriors that finished him almost instantly. I don't think regeneration is one of those abilities that's automatically enough to save you.

@@ssppeeaarr To be fair, this makes sense. You could see this even after merging with Kami. Cell blasted a huge hole in Piccolo and tossed him in the water. Everyone said Piccolo's Ki was gone...yet he later washed up on shore with the hole fully regenerated despite being unconscious.
My impression was originally namekian regeneration only regenerated limbs, thus why even though Picollo's entire body including head was intact after Nappa's blast, Picollo still died, why Nail couldn't regerate even though his head was intact, and why king picollo couldn't regenerate even though his head wasn't even so much as touched. Then, after Cell blew himself up, Toriyama decided he didn't want to end the arc on that downer of a note, so he just retconned namekian regeneration even though it made absolutely no sense, including within the same arc since cell had already had his head disintergrated. When the moment in question in the buu arc happened, he just stuck to his end of cell saga established rules.
So long story short, the answer to the question in my eye was always "bad writing", but not in that arc but in the cell arc. I don't think the "didn't have enough ki" left explanation can work because cell was as on empty as any being could be when he blew himself up, there just isn't a viable explanation.
You can make a head canon. And just say, Cell has a upgraded version of a regular Namekian regeneration factor. I always wonder if Cell powers were stockpile based similar to OFA from MHA or even fusion. So maybe all the mixture of different characters data made Cell very powerful, with multipliers.
Cell survived dismemberment from gokus kamehameha and vegetas final flash and even blew himself up so piccolo can apparently grow more than just his limbs but it makes king piccolos inability to do that look weird in retrospect, clearly no planning ahead with that, i dont even think toriyama was thinking about piccolos own abilities when creating cell besides the fact he could regenerate.
Cell perfects all the skills he has
This includes the Namekian regeneration and being able to gain a zenkai despite how explosion being a self inflicted injury
I always thought cell had the capability to regen from all those circumstances due to frieza’s and king cold’s dna allowing him to live despite being all dismembered mixed with piccolo’s regen
@@ondobaza1034 First time I watched the series that was my initial head cannon as well, some how the mixing of their DNA resulted in a regen that was far beyond that of a namekians. My theory was torpedo'd, however, with that joke scene in the buu arc where picollos body is shattered, but then he recovers like it was nothing and shrugs it off saying as long as his head is intact, regenerating the rest of his body is no problem (inspite of the fact even his head appeared to have been damaged). As far as I can tell, that was Toriyama trying to play it off like cell's out of no where absurd regeneration abilities were how namekian regeneration had always worked, even though it very much hadn't worked that way, but whatever the reason, the implication of that scene is that Cell's regen is just namekian regen.

Figured from what we saw, he was pushed to his limits and his ki was low, and after the long drawn out fight as mentioned, this was his last ditch effort to make sure 100% it wasn't the end so he put everything he had left into the egg
I feel like they made the stone piccolo regenerate as a way to explain why cells regeneration was so OP. Even tho Cells regeneration is still more impressive it doesn’t look as bad after cell regenerates from being broken as stone.
Whilst it makes sense they should’ve just made it so that Cells regeneration ranks above piccolo because of the added durability from friez/king cold
The other thing to note with this is that while Cell did lose strength from the regens, he also got boosts from it thanks to the Saiyan DNA so it made it basically negligible if you did a lot of damage, so Cell’s was still pretty OP
Cell was so effective cause he was part frieza who could live with most of his body gone which allowed the nameks ability to regenerate far better .
As others have said, my first thought was he had no energy left and chose to use what little was left to reincarnate into his child. My second thought was he can't survive without his heart, and the Piccolo comment about his head was ridiculous spur of the moment lore to explain away a dumb joke Toriyama took too far. Which honestly I think I believe even more. Especially when I think to the guy Dodoria killed by one shotting him through the chest. I can't imagine a Piccolo head grunting to regrow a whole body. If he was decapitated and his body was next to him, could he just reattach it? I think it was really just Buu Saga writing creating a problem that didn't need to exist.

It's also possible that regeneration isn't a natural ability for Namekians, Dragon or Warrior clan, they might have to learn how to do it on their own. If that's the case it would make sense that King Piccolo, and possibly Kami as well, just never learned how to do it.

except based on dbz logic, piccolo should be able to regenerate as long as his head remains intact. we see this when trunks breaks his statue and his body is destroyed, real answer is "toriyama didn't think of nemekiens at that point, at this point he was a demon.
I like to think that he was too weak to regenerate. and exploded because he basically put his entire life essence into an egg (Piccolo Jr)
I’d assume that he knows that he had no chance as remember that he used his “full power” which also reduces his lifespan by a lot so guess he made a reincarnate-offspring

Similar when Piccolo fought Imperfect Cell, that Cell blew a whole right through his chest and broke his neck. He could not regenerate because he was so depleted of energy and beaten up. I think probably that Piccolo post merging with Kami and being the whole Namekian "with no name" again, let him be able to up his regeneration ability. He's probably also trained it, along with all the training he does, over the years, so that regeneration as long as his head is intact is now "nothing" to him, comparatively.
Makes sense evil kp is a dragon while he created piccolo as a warrior hence why he can regenerate cause that is useful for warriors and dende can heal which is good for the dragon class and they help each other a symbiotic relationship
Good point about the stamina and power level. But I think it's just like what you said last, Toriyama didn't think of regeneration and Namek yet at that time. Heck, Piccolo was called a Demon and not Namekian.

An explanation from the opposite side could be that king Piccolo felt he was about to expode (Ki left by Goku? Remember the two energy balls Goku used against Freeza?) and regenerating would've been either useless or too slow.

To actually try to answer the question... Maybe he suicided himself since he already knew he was a goner, or it automatically happens if you egg reincarnate
I always assumed that King Piccolo used a lot of his power to generate off spring, even when he became young again it seemed like a proper child consumed a large amount of his ki.
I have never once questioned this. I am now questioning why I never questioned this...
We only ever see Piccolo regenerate an entire body part at once, and with great exertion. I don't think he can regenerate any of the tiny holes 3rd form Frieza was puncturing into him, and I don't think he can regenerate an entire torso while the rest of him is still attached, it's like a landlocked injury. We never seem him regenerate many small wounds like vampire, only the lizard style of an entire part that was lopped off.
So I think that explains it better beyond just the sorta copout answer of "not enough energy that time". Another thing of note is that Cell's regeneration is inherited from Piccolo and operates from that same head core principle, but Goku blasted his head off with a warp kamehameha before, with the only possible headcanon being that he moves his core around. So King Piccolo is not the only example of the regeneration detail being seemingly forgotten and unaddressed

To me in Buu Saga, it didn't seem that Picolo had Not only the head left, but much more than that.
the Namecians can regenerate arms and legs but not deadly holes in the bodies because that is something completely different, it requires some kind of immortality like Buu has.
King Piccolo was powerless at that point because he used all of his power on those two huge blasts that destroyed the city. That's why he took Tien hostage and attacked Goku with rocks instead of blasting him again. He had no more energy to regenerate. Goku was physically injured but still had much power left as he only fired a Kamehameha once.
Maybe King Piccolo had a self-destruct sequence he meditated into himself, like the Predator, so he always had that technique subconsciously wired into his being as a last resort to damage anyone who defeated him.
I chalk it down to the fact the hole was large enough that the circulation required to move things around the body couldn't happen.
That or King Piccolo knew even if he did regenerate, he would still have lost to Goku and would probably been sealed away or basically forced to live in fear of Goku if ever steps out of line...
This is irrelevant. But it was the video I was watching when I had this thought:

My personal head canon is that healing works different based on which clan a Namekian is from. I believe that dragon clan Namekians aren't meant for the battlefield, so, they have no use for self regeneration and evolved to turn the ability outward. Following that logic, warrior clan Namekians would benefit more from self regen until they can rest since they have to be able to keep fighting. It's essentially like how Saiyans have adapted to be able to break their limits and stay in peak condition for longer.
Because regeneration takes Ki and he didn't have enough to heal that injury.
So that Still leaves a couple questions with me:
1) how did he develop/spit up piccolos egg with a hole in his chest?
2) I thought cells regeneration made him lose energy, but every time he does regenerate he'd obtain a zenkai
@@weezymafia1 a) Namekian are not humans, and their reproductive organs are obviously not where that hole was. It's never explained but that egg might've literally grown where humans have their tonsils.
b) Cell isn't just Namekian, but the ultimate hybrid. And the Zenkai boosts granted by his Saiyan Genes is obviously stronger than the energy loss from the Namekian Regeneration. (Zenkai are busted)
Maybe the answer is a follow up to your other video, maybe King Piccolo couldn't regenerate because
he isn't a warrior clan Namek?

It makes sense if you think about it like an rpg. Namekians have HP like everyone else and die when they run out of it. But when they lose a limb or body part that is damage to HP and Max HP. I recall regeneration permanently taking away some of your total power level or chi as well. So not only was King Piccolo near death (low hp), he was also near zero chi energy, so even if he knew he could regenerate, it fits why he couldnt regenerate actually
I may be forgetting a time but don't remember another time a giant body sized hole was blown through a Namekian, the core of the body. Piccolo in the Buu Saga had his entire body there, just in pieces. Energy was most likely also a factor for DKP. Possible plothole or w/e but isn't it just the elder that make offspring?

Dende is shown to heal wounds that include giant holes with other people similar to what the warriors can do on themselves. It makes sense that they have healing powers but directed to either the user or outsiders.
I also think that even if Toriyama knew about regeneration, he would have not used it because he wants Goku to win and at that point Goku was basically useless after the finisher, using regen would write himself into a corner, I think if he wrote it like that he would need to introduce zenkais if not ssj by getting a senzu.
The problem isn't a case of energy etc, its a difference of injury type. Severing vs having a hole blasted through him.
If you remember in the Booth Age, right at the beginning, when he was turned to Stone and trunks knocked piccolo over and broke him into pieces He regenerate it then as long as his head is intact those were his words.
2 questions for possible future videos. How did demon king piccolo spit out an egg if everything below his collarbone was missing?
And why are there only ever a handful of senzu left when they need them? When yajirobe first ate them, the jar was filled to the brim…
Plot and plot. Toriyama doesn't go into details about how things work (like the creation of Namekian eggs), so you can just imagine how it works. Having loads of senzus would make fights more boring, situations less tense and dramatic. Plot is also why Goku arrived late to fight Nappa and Vegeta, for example. It made the situation much more dramatic and gave them a new goal for later.

I'm under the assumption that the injury was severe enough that King Piccolo couldn't regenerate from it .
That's mostly because of the nature of the injury. Having your center of mass literally blown out like that probably put him into shock while the force from the blow wrecked his bones and organs. Compare how Jr. couldn't regenerate from Nappa's attack. Or perhaps how in the Buu Saga, Piccolo Jr. can regenerate from being in literal pieces (Frieza did this too, but Frieza also had the help of machinery); being in pieces was probably less traumatic than what King Piccolo wen through, since re-attaching severed pieces is a lot easier than regrowing all your vital organs.
On top of requiring ki to regenerate, it could be that regenerating different parts of the body takes more energy than others, like regenerating a limb is not as taxing as having to regenerate all that got blown off by goku going through king piccolo's chest like organs, muscles, etc. In piccolos case during the buu saga, maybe he didnt need to regenerate everything since his pieces were right next to each other and by putting them together he could reattach them. We also see in the moro arc a namekian warrior pretty much dying instantly after moro impales him with his arm, so maybe they cannot regenerate from certain damage to the torso.

It’s pure writing convenience, Namekians have never shown regeneration outside regrowing a missing limb let alone anything close to Cell, Piccolo best regeneration feat is offscreen with the statue accident and arguably what you see in the panel is his libs that brake off when he shatters.
Maybe cause it hit his core?
Yeah, the ki thing makes more sense, early on when they were weaker regen took a decent bit of energy but as they get strong the more they can do it with ease with the more ki build up, as they get stronger I don't believe the cost of ki increases, it should stay consistent
A better question is why didn’t piccolo regenerate against nappa
Blocking Nappas blast took all his "Stamina". Similar to how Frieza killed him in Resurrection of F. Picollo blocked the beam that was meant to kill Gohan and used all his power to not let it fully penetrate his Body.
My guess is King Piccolo's might have been able to regenerate at least enough to stave off death but his power was already low and it wouldn't win the fight.. But yoshi'ing up a reincarnation however... And so that is where he placed all his remaining energy. He is established to risk creating an off-spring to accomplish his goals even at the risk of his own life when he was old. Hell Jr basically continues the trend in a not so obvious way with Gohan continuously sacrificing himself.
I feel like this one straight forward. Not to mention he blew. Where’s his intact head at that point?

I like the idea that King Piccolo didnt because he had 2 options, to either try and fail being too weak or spit out an eggs and invest in Piccolo jr. He probably put his ki into the egg.
I was assuming it was how in tact your vitals are but that makes more sense. As for the head thing, not only could it be tied to spirit or whatever but how severe the neurologic damage is.
And as for Cell, I don't think we know HOW that gene splicing actually worked in full. All we know is that he has racial traits and abilities from so many different sources. What we don't fully know is how that manifests. Could Zenkai boosts also play in his regeneration since that's how BS they are for example? Could Cell's entire existence be based on genetic tinkering as they were being implemented? There's a lot of things unsaid with Dragon Ball's "science" as we know, so I wonder if Gero did something to those samples. He'd have to in order for Cell to exist at all. Just like real life, it's not mixing genes alone that begets a potential new individual, it's HOW they're mixed and expressed when inherited from the parents.
I agree with the reason that he took so much damage might be right. Also let's not forget that he gave another birth before he died, that alone is mentioned in both the English and Japanese anime as life risking and energy draining. Also I remember that Kakarrot bit him on the thumb, it showed blood and King Piccoro sucking his own blood. So it might also be a metaphor to the regeneration technique that maybe he simply can't in general. I am happy you did a video about it Mike because I also always wondered about it. I don't read mangas but I decided in the past 2 years that any anime I watch I watch in Japanese with English sub for getting the most accurate idea. The English anime ruins everything if you ask me.
I like how you pointed out that the Dragon Clan of Namekians may not be able to regenerate.
We see that the Warrior Clan can regenerate, as shown by Piccolo (Jr.), Nail, and even Lord Slug, but the Dragon Clan seems to have different abilities, such as Guru's ability to unlock potential, Dende being able to heal OTHERS, as well as Moniato being able to heal others in the DBS manga. However, we've never seen Demon King Piccolo, Kami, Guru, Dende, or Moniato regenerate or heal themselves, the same as we've never seen Piccolo, Nail or Slug heal others... 🤔

I think he could have used regeneration but it would have left him without any energy left. So even if he did he knew he lost and would be picked off by a lesser fighter afterwards anyways. The only option left to him was to reincarnate and play the long game.
Dragon clan has amazing hax too like reading minds and sense opponents energy and power level Kami teaches goku to read mind by touching gohan's head in frieza saga but totally forgotten in later part of Z and Super .
Can we explain why king piccolo was able to spawn “demons”. Tambourine had wings. Is that another type that has wings we never see again??
Easy: He didnt think he could defeat Goku after spending too much Ki regenerating such a large Wound. And even if he had enough power to kill Goku afterwards.. Tien was still around and Kami might have taken action against him in his weakened state. And as a final suggestion: Toriyama didn't have that concept ready yet :P

My head cannon, he just forgot he could do that.
A namekians ability to regenerate is a move that is powered by their life energy or gen ki. People have a finite amount of this and will die if they run out. If a namekian is damaged to a point where using the regeneration will deplete their life energy, then they will just die anyway, just without an injury. This is why piccolo couldn’t regenerate after frieza blasted him on namek when he pushed goku out of the way. He was already running on empty. He fought someone literally millions of times stronger than he was a few years prior. And literally multiple thousands of times stronger than he was literally hours before. What I’m interested to see is if his regeneration is increased in his orange form.
Maybe Piccolo Sr was unaware how durable he was. Even Cell was surprised at his own regeneration ability which he borrowed from Piccolo.
Realistically, no fighter would decapitate themselves just to limit test their regen ability. Even in spare time.
Or maybe they cant regenerate their internal organs.....
Why didn't he regenerate? How did he produce an egg without a stomach? Why did he spontaneously combust? A lot of unanswered questions in this scene.

Your questions could be the answer...with such a mortal wound, possibly ripping out his spine and brainstem, he focuses the last of his energy into reproduction, which must take place in his throat and mouth, being close to his brain,
He then launches the egg, a sort of escape pod for his soul, and his previous vessel self-destructs to damage his opponent.

This had me thinking, how tf did he die against Frieza in Fukatsu no F when protecting Gohan? His head was intact. This is my head canon, and I think he needs to have a certain amount of ki to regenerate, but then even in the Tournament of Power you see the Namekians from Universe 6 getting a beam through the freaking chest and are alive!!!
And let’s not forget, Ki generates in the torso/stomach area of the body. Since King Piccolo got hit there, he probably couldn’t gather Ki if he wanted to anyway. 🤷♂️
