Lang Lang Plays Rach 3 Ossia Cadenza

- Lang Lang plays the infamously difficult Ossia Cadenza from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto 3 (Op. 30) quite flawlessly and manages to troll around a bit while doing so (0:30)!

Not always a fan of his interpretations, but his passion is undeniable. And goddamn he’s got some crazy technique.
너무 해괴한 퍼포먼스..
Yuja"s is better, plus she doesn't drool all over the piano
You know he has technique to spare when he can stare at the camera lens for effect!
He is the world's most overrated pianist... a cruise ship act, at best.
He is a showman after all sort of like how Liberace was.
@@fareshajjar1208 bullshit. If you litem you the performance you can clearly hear he knows what he’s doing. If you don’t like his facial expressions then go audio only.
@@meiguofeng He is horrible; one of the worst classical pianists in the world. The first time I heard him was on the radio and I was thinking, "Well, this must be a local college student." He plays like a cheesy Vegas performer, ignoring many aspects of the original score.
@@fareshajjar1208 🤣
Like him or loath him, you have to admit a) the facial expressions are hilarious b) you' ve got to be a phenomenal pianist to pull them AND to be able to pull off this cadenza as well at the same time.
Totally, it’s almost like playing the music is so easy for him, that he doesn’t get the otherwise natural intensity from the concentration required by mere mortals.. so then has to kind of egg himself on with a deliberate act of shock or wonder.
i don't get why people loathe him
@@thekensilva there’s a nasty vein of snobbery in classical music culture, an expectation of decorum and restraint that he simply does not engage with. It’s a holdover from upper class culture where outward displays of emotion are frowned upon. He’s a little goofy for sure, but I think it’s authentic. That is, I don’t believe he’s making those faces to impress the audience, I think he’s just having the time of his life doing what he loves at a level most of us can’t even imagine. But that’s not going to sit well with a stuffy elitist who believes all classical music needs to put on airs of serious profundity.
@@thekensilva because it's musicaly bad
It's not about the faces and keeping it "classical". Turn the video off and keep the sound, it's still bad.
@@LAK_770 Yeah you can really tell he's feeling it, he moves a lot, in contrast to older performers like vladimir horowitz
Listening to Lang Lang play is simply breathtaking. I cannot say the same about watching him play.
@Katarina Hernandez -- So....What do YOU prefer?
Katarina Hernandez no u
I tried. Still doesn’t help for me at least.
He behaves how he wants to and it doesn't affect the performance. He obviously doesn't behave how you would, but you somehow seem to expect him to. Bizarre.
When you have his ability you can behave your way as you play. Good luck with your bitter life. LOL.
Total agree
The misconception is that classical music is for the melancholic, so people find it difficult to accept a happy, vibrant and energetic young man displaying absolute mastery on the piano. Piano is his life. Allow him to eat it, drink it, kiss it, dance with it, practise kunfu with it, etc. We love all that. God bless Lang Lang, and may I meet him some day.
Henry Arko It’s one thing to say all music is open to interpretation and anyone should be free to play this cadenza as they feel - but this specific cadenza is the absolute antithesis of the adjectives you used to describe Lang Lang here . This cadenza evokes to anyone with any feel for music equal parts furious rage and crushing misery. I for one think that the ethereal quality of music is that it conveys emotion on it’s own. The people in the audience are not there to see him pull grotesque faces as they are no substitute for expressive playing. If he were not using his face as a rather confusing guideline as to what he is trying to convey , his playing alone offers no such indication . Incredibly loud and while obviously technically astounding , performed at a pace which practically drowns the notes . You are correct in saying that everyone should acknowledge one’s right to a subjective opinion , but you must understand that this includes critical opinions as much as it does supportive ones. The music of Rachmaninoff in particular is not music which should be played with constant drama nor is it music which is technically demanding for the sake of it and void of emotion . Call me a purist but I feel that despite his whirlwind virtuosity, Lang Lang and similar pianists *do* disrespect some of the music they perform through ignorance of the music itself.
@Donkey Punch Knock-Out well, obviously Lang Lang hears and feels things through music that you can't understand, hence the idiotic comments. But hey, thats free speech and freedom, trolls keep trolling, Lang lang keeps writing history.
henry Arko, great comment. You spotted lang lang unique behavior and its causes.

When there's a key change you have to lift your eyebrows.
For low tremolos you have to do an angry face.
For dramatic, romantic cadenzas you should act like a soap opera actor reacting to the news that his wife is actually his sister.
He's an extremely successful classical pianist. Who are you? Exactly.
WolfPsx Well, the dude got it right 😂 there's nothing wrong in appreciating Lang Lang for his interpretations, but some of his faces are just too much to be honest
No they're not. You're totally allowed to not watch him.
WolfPsx Well, I guess it's just a matter of personal opinions when it comes to behaviour on stage, better focusing on the music :)
When your face reacts to the music nuances, modulations and colors, it means you focus on music too. There is no manual of the polite pianist, some just involve themselves arms, faces, legs, all they have.
As someone who loves metal guitarists... I love the facial expressions. My man is FEELING it. Is this still called "shredding" on the piano? Because that's what this dude does 🤘🏻 Wish I could play.

No matter what some complain concerning his mannerisms he is an amazing performer who transfers his body and soul to making music live larger than life on the concert stage. So did Franz Listz.
Franz Liszt was known to not move or sweat much during performances. He managed to play louder fortissimos than every other pianist without a change in facial expression at all. So, not a great comparison. That being said, you’re right about both bringing music to life, though in very different ways of course. Lang Lang is no Liszt, but most of us aren’t even Lang Lang, so there’s that

This is the best...so simple and easy to interpret...
Rachmaninov is a very mature & honest music that mustn't be faced only with virtuosity...The rich panoply of sounds in it requests high levels of rigor and understanding!
If you ask 100 classical aficionados "who played it the best" for any piece, you will get at least 25 different responses. Does that mean 24 of these people are wrong? Absolutely not. It just means a lot of it is subjective. And there is nothing wrong with that. We all have different tastes.

He’s so good technically. And he’s such a dwebe! This is the prognosis!
Why does this make me think of Trifonov? And credit to Lang Lang, he is basically unstoppable, can play anything however he wants
Lang Lang is better than Trifonov
Lang lang is an interesting pianist, however here, he is more into effects than into music and flow (which does not need to be constant or soft). I like the 1953 Horowitz's version, with Fritz Reiner a lot more. There, what matters is music, and talking to the soul or with the soul, rather than giving impression to a public or ourself (as pianist).
Horowitz Rocks!!
Horowitz is also my favorite though Horowitz never publically played this cadenza as far as I know. What I feel from Lang Lang's version is tremendous enjoyment and excitement with a bit of show-off. well... he deserves to show off a bit. I don't think he's doing that face for the audience. I wouldn't purposely make that face to make fool of myself. that facial expression has to be the same expression he makes when he's practicing alone.
I don't know if there is 1) too much pedal and 2) too much of "I'm going to add beats in the measure because it is too difficult to play; but for me, this is not a 100% performance. Thumb up.
Hmm... I think this is one of the most faithful ossia cadenza interpretations out there (I think only Volodos can stand up to it). Most pianists seem to struggle hard with this part of the concerto and they can't play it the way they want to, but I think Lang Lang is one of the few pianists that can milk it for all its worth (especially with those fast runs for extra intensity) and doesn't seem to have any technical difficulties whatsoever. Are you sure that you aren't mixing it up with the regular cadenza (Horowitz or Argerich recordings)? This one has a lot more breathing room.
Woah his hands look pretty freaky at the beginning! :O Scarry, but excellent performance!
Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Martha Argerich, never recorded this cadenza. Lang Lang did it. Rachmaninoff himself told that that Cadence requires more than a good interpreter. Lang played it with an excellent interpretation, very clean, very potent and very fast. Most of the comments are pitiful paying attention to just his facial expressions in place of the music. Who can play that in the whole concerto? Is there jealousy?
