They are super in-depth tutorials. Despite being long, they offer a tremendous amount of information per video quite effectively. I'd imagine only dedicated aspiring animators can hang with it.
Wow, you just totally got me interested in character design in Photoshop again. That is hands down the best character painting method I've seen for Photoshop. I learned more than I can put into words. SOOOO many past headaches will be avoided in the future.
Thank you for posting this tutorial. I am trying to learn to use Photoshop with my Wacom tablet and this video shows concisely and clearly how to use layers and clipping masks. I've subscribed and will be back to watch your other videos once I get this mastered.
Just found this old gem whilst revisiting your channel. I am taking my first baby steps in digital art now and feel like I found baby Jazza to guide my way! 😅 So cute compared to your level of camera confidence and production value these days! And for the basics still very helpful. Thank you so much for all the content you make and made and keeping it on the channel still. Love from afar! 💜
Hello Jazza. Thank you so much for your amazing tutorials. I was so inspired and fascinated by your digital paintings that I had to try myself. I got a Wacom intuos pro and photoshop cc yesterday and drew this cat every step of the way with you. The layers and coloring technique is so awesome. Thank you so much for your patience and determination to teach. I do have a steep learning curve ahead of me as I am not used to the tablet and I have no clue about photoshop. I have bought your brushes to make my life easier. They are amazing although I am not up to using them completely to their advantage yet. I will practice every day and learn more. Once again thank you so much for inspiring me. You are awesome. I watched every one of your videos in two months since I discovered you. You ROCK. ❤
I've been struggling with fills and couldn't find a clipping mask tutorial that I could follow. This taught me everything I wanted to know and so much more. Thanks.
Jazza, i have been using my tablet for 6 month now, and i used sai alot, but i always prefered photoshop. though it felt lacking. though i simply didn't know some these techniques, and i must say 'Thank you' from the deepest part in my heart, for simply making my life as an amatuer artist soo much better. cheers mate. :-) (and have a wonderful day!)
Thanks so much for this tut Jazza, really helped out ^^ Do you have any plans to make more Tuts on Digital painting? Maybe something more in depth or detailed? Cheers
Thank you very much for this tutorial, This was exactly what i was looking for. The other tutorial on this was just speed painting and i had no idea what was going on.
You're so good at this stuff dude! I've been watching for days lol. You should do a tutorial on Dan Mumford style stuff or stuff that involves like, heavy inking and stuff. Seem's like something you'd be really good at explaining. Plus that style is getting pretty popular. Thanks for all the help great videos :D
Thanx so much Jazza! Could you also make one for how you do your animation backgrounds? If you could, could you also show how you would layer it up (background objects and such) in flash?
It selects everything that is uninterrupted by the black lines. If you have different white zones divided by black lines (e.g. in this tutorial the cat's head, body, tail, eyes, hat, nose) it will only select that one zone. Check whether your black lines really connect to each other. To select multiple zones, hold shift key while clicking with the wand.
Up jazza do you draw with a mouse because I always see you wearing some kind of comfort glove if you don't what setup are you using? Thanks for the help with photshop and arm anatomy!
if i'm understanding your question correctly, holding down Shift while clicking will allow you to select multiple regions (so long as they are enclosed.....no gaps in the line art)
This is an interesting technique for painting in PS. Do you have an uncolored version of the CatInTheHat file for visitors to practice with? Great tutorial.
Hi Jazza, I was trying out your tutorial, and I face a problem: Instead of colouring the white empty space, my line work gets coloured when I used your method. How can I reverse this to achieve what you have done?
Is there a way to get just line work from flash into photoshop? Can't get the same quality lines in photoshop as you can for some reason. When i do try to import files from flash i get a white background behind the picture.
Poor cat, you put plaster al over him ;) Just kidding, this tutorial was very helpful for me because i want to get into digital and non digital art. Keep up the great vids!!!
It's there to prevent his hand from touching the screen of his tablet. If you watch other artists, some use actual gloves, while his just covers his one finger.
Hi, I was wondering if by any chance you would know how to do the 'Alt click thing' on a windows pc? I don't have mac and it does something completely different if I do that :( Many thanks for that tutorial!
This is a great vid and I am watching over and over and learning how to organize and how to draw. Does anyone know how to do layer 7(6:55), please? I am using CS5 though and followed up his description but it doesn't work out. Just duplicate the same layer.
Congratulations! I have seen many tutorials but yours finally made it all clear about how to apply clipping masks. Thanks a lot!
They are super in-depth tutorials. Despite being long, they offer a tremendous amount of information per video quite effectively. I'd imagine only dedicated aspiring animators can hang with it.
Knowing the masking thing makes my color so much easier thanks! Love your videos.

Another great tutorial Jazza!

if i'm understanding your question correctly, holding down Shift while clicking will allow you to select multiple regions (so long as they are enclosed.....no gaps in the line art)

This is an interesting technique for painting in PS. Do you have an uncolored version of the CatInTheHat file for visitors to practice with? Great tutorial.
sweet! looking forward to it =D
That technique is often referred to as the "Trawick Layer Manipulation", named after renowned Photoshop guru James Trawick.
Jazza already knows the name now but for anyone watching in 2013, its called a clipping mask.
wonderful tutorial,helped a lot.and i'm 100th commenter :)
what resolution do you use on pics you wanna get lots of details in or close up to?
do you have a minimum value or something?
The technique you are using us called a "clipping mask"
That was what i was thinking it was eventually, not just some weird fashion statement hahaha
FINALLY!
Hi Jazza, I was trying out your tutorial, and I face a problem:
Instead of colouring the white empty space, my line work gets coloured when I used your method. How can I reverse this to achieve what you have done?
yo yo jazza... just wondering whether that really cool looking rpg u were making is still getting developed? =D
Yo Jazza, What course did you take in College or Uni?
Is there a way to get just line work from flash into photoshop? Can't get the same quality lines in photoshop as you can for some reason. When i do try to import files from flash i get a white background behind the picture.
Younger Jazza: This bright pink *colors in nose*
me: um...that is what we call purple Jazza... XD
Dude for a moment I thought that was 3D !!!!!!
the magic wands selects all the white areas on my drawing, how do u make it so that u can select different zones?
You can do the same thing useing folder maks, its pritty much the same thing :D
i liked it when you had that beard :P
Poor cat, you put plaster al over him ;)
Just kidding, this tutorial was very helpful for me because i want to get into digital and non digital art. Keep up the great vids!!!
Does anyone know how to get the same brush stroke?
I prefer to use a brush stroke like his, but I can never get it...
The "Alt clicking" method he's talking about is known (or also known as) a Clipping mask
Any suggestions on free stock textures?
do u always use a pen tablet?
found it myself already, but thnx (:
It's there to prevent his hand from touching the screen of his tablet. If you watch other artists, some use actual gloves, while his just covers his one finger.
Thx u gd sir.
can you make a new vid. with this teqnuiqe:
you could youst do your magic wand thing than expand an boom its now clipping mask within the selection
How did you make the blue stripes appear with one click?
Hi, I was wondering if by any chance you would know how to do the 'Alt click thing' on a windows pc? I don't have mac and it does something completely different if I do that :( Many thanks for that tutorial!
It's called a clipping mask. Just search it up for mac
It's the exacts same for both
He uses a drawing tablet, the glove is to stop his hand sticking to the glass of the tablet :D
This is a great vid and I am watching over and over and learning how to organize and how to draw. Does anyone know how to do layer 7(6:55), please? I am using CS5 though and followed up his description but it doesn't work out. Just duplicate the same layer.
Create a new layer over the one with your colour and then hold ALT key and click the gap between the layers.
Thank you very much for your reply~~!!!
