I prefer hand drawn animation over 2D rigging but 2D rigging requires a lot of work and should get props. A lot of shows out there are 2D rigged and some of them didn’t even look like it, it looks hand drawn. An example would be Star vs the forces of evil or Wonder over yonder
you're right I should have clarified. In the tool thing on the left when you have bresh selected, there's a fill-type selection, and it's automatically set to pain-on-top. Change that to paint behind. I didn't know it existed for years, now I use it every day.
I was looking for videos on tweening, cause I’d like to try and get into it/learn how to do it, but I *REALLY* was not expecting a 2010’s era Jazza video lmao. ((Edit: Now I also feel like I’m MORE confused on the topic than I was before. I think my first order of business is just going to be to find whatever program most people use for tweening smh.
When I tried this, I had to change them all to movie clips to animate them in motion tweens... Unsure what I did wrong. (Using CS 5.5) *Edit* Looks like I need to use Classic Tweens, and I was using Motion Tweens. Problem solved, but other questions now left unanswered...
Thank you Jazza!! And for those who keeps requesting tutorials you might want to check the book "The Animator's Survival Kit" .. It's a really great book.. for beginners and "pros"..
Hi jazza! I know you may never see this but this is from 6 years later! Comparing this video to your recent videos its amazing to see how enthusiastic and how much you have changed over the years. I am a long time fan and i hope you continue videos!
This was really helpful! The center of gravity looks a bit off in the tweened animation, so that adds to why it looks a little strange compared to the frame-by-frame. But both definitely have their benefits and drawbacks! Thanks!
Hey Jazza! Just a quick question for a newby 2D animator. In your average scenario where you find yourself animating a walk cycle, do you find yourself using use tweens, frame by frame, or perhaps a combination of the two? I feel most drawn to frame by frame, but I could see how tweens would help speed up the process to make the more prominent details look really good in frame by frame. Thanks!
And in general I do use methods like that, but hey, I figured I'd keep the FBF and tween tutorials strictly to their method to teach them individually.
Tried to learn flash in like 04 for a school thing. And would have loved to have things like this then. It would have made the learning time soo much shorter and i would have been able to do more fun stuff with it. Thanks for a good video!
If you wanted to, you could just redraw the feet to add that bend and still get some smoother animation, combining the tweening and frame by frame styles you said you sometimes do in the intro video right?
Please make MORE videos! You are so so helpful and explain it in a professional way not the 'youtube' way. Can you make some tutorials on how to make a cartoon in flash for example animations like - RageNineteen does?
Bone tool is a bad idea in Flash unless you're specifically using it for tails or tentacles. Unlike some other programs, If I'm not mistaken, Flash does not allow symbol swapping on bone rigs, which pretty much means that your bone rig is good for pretty much nothing beyond that one specific rigged set of symbols.
This makes the selection box for the symbol be the exact size of the object. It makes it a bit less cluttered, but it's not 100% necessary, only for organizational purposes.
Can you do a video showing how to animate overlapping action and follow through, like wavy hair or a jacket or trench coat on a character or maybe a octopus under water and its tentacles floating and moving plz?!?!
Hey Jazza, have you ever considered streaming on a website like Twitch? People would pop in and watch you draw/animate and you could narrate or answer questions in the chat.. live!
Hi Jazza, Bravo for your videos. When and How do you choose to animate "Frame by frame" or "Tweened". Sorry for my english. I would begin to try animation
What is with your face? Kidding. But in seriousness, I am using a 'smudgeguard', kind of a one-fingered glove, which helps my hand glide across the tablets surface.
Those were the days. Simply, calm tutorials. Unfortunately now appears to be "performing' to 5 year olds and is loud, zany and video's titled like "I Make a Bob Ross Painting using ONLY FOOD" and has 5 million subscribers.
i thought id say my FBF of a guy in my animation book for reference and died laughing as of now he is walking like a confident lady. :'''D i blame it on the book ! XD
Hey Jazza, love the video's. I'm just getting started animating solely because of this channel, it's truly an inspiration. Quick question at 22:01 you change some setting so that the test video scales with resizing of the rendered window, what setting was that and how do I change it? Thanks!
I just started Flash this year. And it is hard for me, and time consuming, but I keep going on because everytime I see your videos I am like, "WOW! I want to do that." I'm also trying to progress as an artist this Summer. Any quick tips?
hey just wondering, how long have you been drawing (on the pc) for? cos i started about a month ago and just bought my first tablet and obviously I am no way near as good as you =D
Hi Jazza, Thanks for your tutorials they are awesome. I wanted to ask you a technical question, how do I put a new layer that doesnt modify the others in the keyframe, for example: a head that need to wink or close the mouth in a particular keyframe. I try to go into the head movieclip and make the eyes closed but it applies to all of the animation and the changes applies to the other heads layers too. Thanks in advance, Alan
Thanks this was helpful. I’ve been doing a lot of frame by frame animations and have been thinking about learning how to rig a character so it would be a bit quicker getting the animations done but still have a hard time with the stiffness of the character. I really don’t mind the frame by frame sometimes. For what I’m doing it just makes more sense to me to just draw everything but it does really suck to have to color in all the frames so I was wondering if rigging would save time with the coloring process? Again great video 👍 and thanks for sharing.
Regarding the control in the fbf verses the tweening, can't you actually replace the foot in the key frame, to show the bend in the foot and the rotation in the back forearm, then in the next key frame replace the foot and back forearm again to their original? Thus giving you that fully animated strut of the character.
I decided to try something completely different and because I enjoyed your tutorial I have subscribed. Just wondering however how to draw with the pencil and have Flash not edit my lines. I'm doing a bit of sketching as I am no artist. However whenever I draw it skewers the lines, I want it to stay as I've drawn it
Hey Jazza Ive painted a character in photoshop cs6, but I want to animate the walk cycle. Could u animate it from the Ps file or would u have to paint it in flash and if so how do i do that?
Oh, that's nothing. The one I REALLY love getting again and again is "what program are you animating flash cartoons in?"
luv ur vids
That's a good one

I think that choppy hand-drawn animation is almost always better than smooth rig-based animation. It has so much more life to it.
I agree, the end result of this looks incredibly awkward and stiff.
High quality tween animation still should be appreciated.
I prefer hand drawn animation over 2D rigging but 2D rigging requires a lot of work and should get props. A lot of shows out there are 2D rigged and some of them didn’t even look like it, it looks hand drawn. An example would be Star vs the forces of evil or Wonder over yonder
I HATE TWEENS!
i mean tweening can be good if it's done right, wander over yonder for example
tweening is simple.
Tweening: In-Betweening
Tweening means in-betweening.
Simple as that.
Tweening and symbol swapping are the lone animator's greatest ally, and most non animators can't tell the difference. Nice tutorial as always!
6 years later, THIS TUTORIAL SAVED MY LIFE! Thank you Jazza.
pewdiepie?
What?
Rhyl Papalid clever
Rhyl Papalid lol
Rhyl Papalid lmao
ikr! thats what i said!!!

+ThatNinjaGuy4 I had the same issue. Motion tween didn't work for me, after I read this comment gave classic tween a try and it worked.
that's where you'd need to do the hard-yards and draw new frames :)
2020 and still learning from this guy
added to my list :)
Thank you Jazza!!

When you draw the white line to fill a body part in, how come the white line you draw doesn't go over the black lines?

I'm definitely no jazza, but I'm studying animation. Looks like a lot frame by frame with a little tweening for the head and other spots.

Thank you very much Jazza
I think I’m starting to get the hang of it
Hey jazza!!! what is the purpose of turning it and reselecting it before converting into an object...@4:39
This makes the selection box for the symbol be the exact size of the object. It makes it a bit less cluttered, but it's not 100% necessary, only for organizational purposes.
You look kinda like Thor in this video.
Hey Jazza,
i love your video and they helped me a lot.
Could you please make a tutorial about perspective walk (different angels etc.)
Can you do a video showing how to animate overlapping action and follow through, like wavy hair or a jacket or trench coat on a character or maybe a octopus under water and its tentacles floating and moving plz?!?!

Hey guys, ever heard of C L A G ? If you haven't then you need to ask the clag clan.
I'm 5 years late I think this is a new record, lol.

Zachary Aghaizu yes it does
I honestly liked the frame by frame more but thats just me

Wooooah 8 years ago...
Hey Jazza
Ive painted a character in photoshop cs6, but I want to animate the walk cycle. Could u animate it from the Ps file or would u have to paint it in flash and if so how do i do that?
I was looking for a video about how to make a walk cycle and then I heard G'day and I was so confused and I realised it was jazza, what the hell!?
Thanks teacher
