- A large pro-Palestinian protest broke out at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Dozens were arrested near Alumni Park as LAPD officers used zip ties to detain protesters for trespassing.
The "Gaza Solidarity Occupation" demonstration at USC comes as colleges across the U.S. like Columbia University, NYU and Yale have in recent days joined in support of Palestinians in the Israel-Hamas war.

Getting arrested is a time-honored strategy for protestors. Yes, part of it can be to feel heroic about standing against injustice, but it can also be scary if you've never been arrested before. It seems like the more people are arrested, the more protests pop up on other campuses or the more people show up at the same campus when the protestors reconvene. This is why arresting people can have unwanted results. It can turn protesters into "martyrs" being unjustly arrested for peaceful protesting. If protests are NOT preventing students from moving freely about campus & are not inciting hatred toward jews, then arresting students will backfire. Arresting outside agitators, however, is a different story because they can be charged with trespassing if they don't leave when asked. It's difficult to know what to do in situations like this. The optics look bad to see police arresting peaceful protesters who don't resists arrest. In situations involving vandalism, takeovers of buildings, targeted harassment of Jewish people, hate speech, blocking the free movement of students who are trying to get to classes, etc., more charges can be brought. In the cases of actual violence or anti-Jewish rhetoric, expulsion would be much more effective than an arrest. With an arrest, you get to make your point to police officers, maybe to the media, you inspire others to take a stand, you can look like you're being deprived of your free speech rights, while feeling like you are doing something important. It's not a punishment for them, even if there are court fees or fine. The threat of EXPULSION, on the other hand, applied to situations of vandalism, terrorism, or otherwise being destructive, violating campus policy, or interfering with the rights of others, would be a much more serious threat & people would have cleared out much sooner in some of these schools.

USC is a private school. Additionally, the protestors were asking the school to divest (from their investments in the Israeli military), which is a type of defunding. So, ironically, it sounds like you agree with the protestors!

If you ask those who study it, this conflict dates back to the late 19th century, not just last year. The argument of “who started it” may go back and back without finding just 1 answer-all the way back to the crusader states, ownership of that land has been fought over since Jesus was born. Certainly Oct 7th kicked off a new bout of fighting, but too much has predated the conflict to be brushed aside.
And, indeed, where are the hostages? It’s something that is being asked at nationwide protests in Israel against Netanyahu involving tens of thousands of people. 123 have been released, at least 3 have been shot down by the IDF, about 34 have been killed in the fighting, and 130 are estimated to remain.
But what about the hostages that Israel holds? They are called prisoners, there are 4,500, which includes 1,000 who are incarcerated indefinitely & without a charge, and 160 children. Once again, there is a history of this because according to Red Cross statistics, “in the first two decades of the [first Intifada], from 1967 to 1987, one in three Palestinians, about 500,000, were detained by Israeli forces”.

Only 27% of USC are international students with the vast majority being from China. So it’s pretty likely most of those protestors are US citizens. You may not find their actions helpful, but I do have to question whether you actually support the 1st amendment right that we enjoy as Americans.

didn't stop traffic on busy highway, didn't seem to fight anyone, was willing to accept consequences for not moving on when asked, a protest done right in my opinion, good on them for being civil with it.
its a shame the others had to let this school down.
Only took a week of national outrage for them to do something
Young and dumb. Rebels without a clue. Protesting is just a reason to gather and party. They would do the same thing for any other cause.
