  • The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office has released body camera footage from a shooting that killed U.S. Air Force Airman Roger Fortson inside his apartment. Sheriff Eric Aden said the deputy entered the correct apartment and announced himself, adding that Fortson acknowledged law enforcement was at the door and had a gun.
    LiveNOW’s Andy Mac discussed the shooting with Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Taylor, who spoke about Florida’s laws that allow homeowners to protect themselves and their homes with firearms and possible charges that could be brought against the officers. “When you’re inside your home, you have every right to protect yourself and feel safe,” the attorney said when discussing how police interact with the public when firearms are involved.

    • @scotttaylor9133
      @scotttaylor9133 20 дней назад +46

      @@chorlesteajones6794 that's fine, but this guy was at home alone, and there was no reason to initiate this interaction the way this cop did. If you watch the body cam footage he specifically moved to avoid being in view of the peep hole so the guy had no idea if the person beating on his door was actually a cop or just claiming to be so he'd open the door (and ostensibly they could rush in). Males are not invincible to attack, it happens. A lot, males are the victims of most violence so yeah, he's going to be ready if he doesn't know who it is because they're apparently very persistent and don't want him to see their face.
      This was a call for a noise complaint with a hint of domestic violence --maybe--. This wasn't a lone cop, the only one brave enough to take down El Chapo in his home. But that's exactly how this cop approached it.
      The most dangerous thing there was the cop. If he would have just calmly knocked on the door and shown who he was, this very likely would have all gone very differently. If the young man had just refused to open the door he'd probably still be alive. There was no exigent circumstance, there was no arrest warrant, there was no search warrant. This was a neighbor on neighbor complaint ginned up a little to make they could stick it to the neighbor they didn't like using the police (by claiming fears of domestic violence).
      Instead he wanted to play action hero, and killed someone in the process. Who cares, just a 'civilian', right?

    • @1Yogaboy
      @1Yogaboy 20 дней назад +68

      The cop hid after knocking so he didn't know who it was. The serviceman probably looked through the peephole and didn't see anyone so he got the gun and opened the door to check. And the coward murdered him.

    Everyone has the right to defend himself in his own home; he was inside his own home, and NOT pointing the gun at the deputy.
    Not once did the deputy tell him to put the gun down, before pumping him full of lead.
    These people see a gun and immediately piss themselves!

    ..and in this case the cop was definitely trying to kill him.

Still sheriff outside hears no noise or disturbance. There's a gap of time in between And no identifying from the sheriff. 2nd try, sheriff knocks identifies himself, no one answer door. 3rd try, sheriff waiting identifies himself, door opens sheriff says step back ( so he sees the firearm in the airman's hand ( split sec 💥) airman down. Soooo where was the disturbance??? Was the airman talking loudly to his lady friend on FaceTime??? Still no physical disturbance altercation on said premises and the airman didn't have his gun pointed at the sheriff, or make any moves towards the sheriff!! Exactly where did the call come from?? And this apt manager sounded like she was unsure about where the disturbance came from.?? I think the sheriff could have identified himself more or at least waited for back up. But, I say it sounded pretty quiet while that sheriff was waiting for that door to open. I wanna hear the call that was made. Clearly there was a big, a very big foul up on communication,from the apt mngr(lady) of being unsure of where the actual disturbance was. His the airman's gun was pointed down citizen's! DON'T OPEN THE DOOR WITH GUN IN HAND. HE ANNOUNCED IT WAS POLICE.

    If the cop waited for backup the Airman would have been shot 6 additional times.

      @@aceplaysgamesnetwork9566why should he not be able to answer with a gun? if possessing a weapon inherently makes you a threat then you could argue anyone has the right to shoot a deputy since they're armed and approaching them.

    This fellow veteran was not killed in a foreign land or in the US defending the US constitution, his nation, or it's people. He was gunned down by a trigger happy, cowardly, poorly executing, etc cop. Utterly unacceptable. Full stop.

    "His life was threatened?" The young man DID NOT HAVE THE GUN RAISED AND POINTING AT HIM!" He fired shots and then said, "Put the gun down" that command came after he unloaded his gun, after the fact. He shot this child as soon as he opened the door and he DID not have the gun pointing at him, it was at his side. I DO GIVE A DAMN WHAT ANYBODY SAY, HE MURDERED THIS MAN IN COLD BLOOD!
