this concept is so fantastic, it really shows how Smudge viewed the wild forest cats and the fear of watching his best friend turn into one of them. all the animators did such a great job, too!
I always thought abt being in smudge's shoes while reading the prophecy begins. It felt like a betrayal, being attacked by a whole clan of ruffians

I like to believe that after firestar died he went and at least walked with smudge one last time. talked to his old friend, told him stories of his life, and i know smudge would never go to starclan, but maybe he can be with firestar when he goes to starclan, to say goodbye to his old best friend from the first few chapters ✨

I really love the idea that in this particular universe, the Clan cats really do look like this. The Clans would all look different from each other but they all look otherworldly to rogues and kittypets. They would be like the four seasonal courts of the faeries.

I love the concept of Rusty having a lion’s mane. He was born wild. He was born to become Firestar, leader of Thunderclan. It’s just a shame Smudge had to lose his best friend in the process. I wonder if Firestar still remembered him. I like to think he did 🥲

@Annagator-ze8oo I mean, her son and brother were in there, and if she thought they were both dead, she'd feel immense guilt because she sent her son to join thunderclan. She has no way of knowing they survived
I love how in the end they are wearing the other's respective colors. Smudge with Rusty's bell and Firestar with Smudge's blue in his forget-me-nots.
I love how this one MAP is spooky just from possibly symbolic imagery. We don't know if that's actually what the Clan cats look like here, or if that's just how Smudge sees them all.
I like to think that's how all outsiders see them, but once a cat joins them they look less terrifying and more welcoming
my thoughts is that the mindset of the clancats (defending territory, and always patrolling in groups and such) is a more stricter mindset (following the warrior code, ect), whereas the kittypets have a much looser mindset because of not having to care for themselves as much.
Thus, there is a big difference in the mindsets, clancats NEED to learn to fight and hunt, and protect themselves and their clan, so they come across as scary to the kittypets, who, don't need to defend themselves nearly as much (they can just run to their owners house) , or need to hunt (if they do its more hunting for fun probably, and not taken as seriously, thus most kittypets probably don't try to get very good with it)
Because of what i said above, I feel the depictions of the clancats in this MAP is based on that large different of mindsets, and view of whats necessary and what not. (ex: how when rusty was first in the woods in `into the wild` he didnt even stop to think that him hunting mice would be a problem, cause he never considered there being a lack of food, due to him being fed catfood from the his owners at the time)
Things like defending territory to the degree that warriors do, probably greatly coming across as them being scary brutes who are violent with no apparent reason to the kittypets (thus the scary looks in the map and such that clancats take from smudges view), this theory is also supported in (firestars quest?) when firestar is patrolling and sees smudge being attacked by a patrol, and after firestar sends the patrol on their way, smudge told him:

@@proud22beme I really love this theory you made! This also shows that any Kittypet who do join the clans have the bravery they need to stay. At least that how I like to think.
I clicked on this not prepared for it. This is absolutely beautiful, I cried. Smudge just wanted to exert caution, to be wary of the forest cats, and had to say goodbye to a friend simply because he was fearful of joining them. Smudge’s character in the books isn’t really elaborated upon too deeply, but this MAP really changes the way I see him. Everyone did such a great job, amazing work!
This inspired me to write a poem soo uh here:
My bones creak, I’m getting old
My mind wanders off, that’s what I’m told.
I lay down and think and ponder,
Of the woods where we once wandered.
We were still young, you and I
Chasing crickets and butterflies.
I don’t know how, but you convinced me,
To come into the woods, so vast and free.
You lead me through the trees etched with eyes.
Our hair all tangled, the sun starting to rise.
You were drawn to it all day and night,
I followed you back without a fight.
A figure of darkness stood before us,
Many more joined its chorus.
They appeared out from shadows,
In the woods where we once ventured.
Sticks and cobwebs lined their skin,
Worms and dirt churned within.
You approached them so eagerly,
I shrank back, afraid of what I might see.
You thought of stags; graceful and wild,
I thought of hunters; aiming for vitals.
You painted yourself with their darkened depths,
Your eyes bore into my sockets.

You towered above me, a corruption of what I knew,
I fled from the woods, my fear only grew.
Brambles tore at my skin,
Outreached claws of your predatory kin.

The woods crumbled down till’ it was nothing but muck.
Now I sit between a fairy ring,
Where butterflies float and crickets sing.
Covered in mold and rot,

A wild mane weaved with flowers,
No longer changed by the wood’s powers.

Haven't even read Warriors yet this is the first animation to ever make me cry. Absolutely beautiful song to animate. Especially love how Smudge's mindset warps the imagery; the bits of pieces of the forest innocently hitchhiking on the wildcats' fur contradicts his sheltered lifestyle making the otherwise normal cats appear ominous and foreboding, whereas Firestar likely doesn't even notice. And his best friend bathed in a heavenly light of innocence, even in memory, until the seductive call of the wild latches onto to his fur and corrupts him into a monster. So much thought and symbolism lovingly placed into every single frame by the animators and storyboarders. I'll need to change that fact of mine now. Astonishing animation. 💙

Gorgeous map guys! I loved every second and every detail! I didn’t notice before how the three forest cats they meet were Bluestar, Graypaw, and Lionheart at first! I also love how Smudge meets Firestar again even though his friend is sadly passed. I think Smudge was a very underutilized character in the books to be honest.

That's such a cool concept! I like how Rustys design changes and Smugde can only watch his best friend become one of his fears. Their little dream-reunion is kinda sad, I had some tears in my eyes. Everything is so beatifully animated, everyone did an amazing job!! I especially love the scene at 2:39 Firehearts (?) design looks so nice with the flowers and the animators style is so sweet!
I love this it really shows his propestive about him seeing the forest cats as monsters and rusty/firepaw/fireheart/firestar becoming a monster when it happened ,I almost cryed a bit ,Awesome map!
This is such a pretty MAP, I almost teared up at the end. I adore the concept and execution of how the clan cats look and how Rusty turns into one of them. The designs for all the characters are gorgeous!

Absolutely adore the designs and atmosphere. The moment when rusty turned into wild feral monster was so thrilling!
Every part is absolutely gorgeous, what a phenomenal map! I just adore the symbolism in this too. Where Rusty sees wonders and beauty, is promised adventure, Smudge just sees horrors and danger, and is desperate to not have his friend leave him.
Its really sad how smudge was scared for him to die, or get killed by the so called “forest cats”, he didn’t want rusty to die so he asked twice, “are you sure?” Rusty thought it wouldn’t be bad, until it was after he became the greatest leader of all time. “I miss you rusty…”

i know this is a year old but i just had to write something.
this is phenomenal. it really is. this is one of the few animations to actually make me cry. and i haven't even read a warrior cats book in years!
i felt the need to point out that final scene where smudge is laying down surrounded by mushrooms. it's a fairy circle, which i don't think many others noticed. i love the whole symbolism behind the fairy circle as well, possibly meaning that when smudge saw rusty/firestar it was a sort of dream.
fairy circle lore and symbolism can be impossibly deep. the usual thing is that if you step into one, don't eat any food you see, because you might never wake up. and i think that's sort of what's happening here, except smudge doesn't want to wake up. he's happy to see his best friend again.
all that symbolism (plus this song, one of my favorites) really got to me. again, i know i'm a little late with the comment, but i had to say something. this is just so, so good.

I love the eyes in the birch trees and i havent seen it mentioned but the moment at 1:00 where rusty has some leaves and twigs in his mane as foreshadowing was amazing!

This is my favorite MAP i’ve seen in a while probably, the storytelling is fantastic and really cohesive, so it’s easy to follow which sometimes MAPs aren’t. Plus the stylistic elements are really cool. Good job everyone who worked on this

On Stormhearts’ part I noticed there are small twigs on Rudy. I think this was added to foreshadow Rusty turning into a forest cat. Aside from all of that, really love this map! This really shows Smudge’s point of view really well of Rusty leaving him to join the clans.

Poor Smudge. His friends kinda just left him. Also, anyone feel bad for Rusty's owners? How would you feel if your cat just left and never came back? This map is so good at making me feel emotions.
I love the detail of adding a fairy circle I think it's called and having smudge enter it. Does that mean the cat he saw was fake? The one at the end that hugged him and walked by Smudge.
fairy circles can be a portal to another world as well. But its really all up for interpretation. Was it a dream? Did Rusty/Firestar come back to him? Did he take Smudge with him or did he leave him behind?
These MAP videos are capital 'A' Art, I fully believe that. The extremely creative and engaging fantasy premise this video is built on, the wonderful, evocative art styles everyone brought to their parts, the rly interesting short story here🤍 This is definitely one of my favorite MAPs. Thanks y'all for making it!

This MAP, "The Woods" by San Fermin, is a truly fantastic concept that does an incredible job of capturing the essence of Smudge's perspective on the wild forest cats and the fear of watching his best friend turn into one of them. The animators have done an excellent job bringing this vision to life.
The Canadian Does Things has written a beautiful poem that perfectly captures the feeling of wandering through the woods with a friend, only to have them be drawn to the darkness and the wildness of it all. It's a truly poignant and evocative piece that perfectly captures the theme of the MAP.
Zirconia Gacha also brings up an interesting point, the symbolic imagery in the MAP is spooky and leaves it open to interpretation as to whether or not that is what the Clan cats truly look like or if it is just how Smudge sees them.
Green Tea also mentions how this MAP has changed the way they see Smudge's character, who is not expanded upon too deeply in the books. It's amazing how the MAP can bring a new dimension to the character and give a deeper understanding of him.
Skyler_the patato has an interesting perspective, believing that after Firestar died, he went and walked with Smudge one last time, and even though Smudge may not go to StarClan, he can still be with Firestar when he goes to StarClan to say goodbye to his old best friend from the first few chapters.
Keira Meowmeow also brings up an interesting point, wondering how Smudge reacted when the forest was torn down.
Overall, the MAP is an outstanding work of art that captures the emotion and theme perfectly, and it's no surprise that it has received so much praise. 2:19 was like a scene from Ferngully bro HOLY SHIT ?? whatever my expectations might have been coming into this, their inclusion, and insane portrayal, of surrealism, conceptualism, abstract expressionism- etc, whatever the hell else kind of serotonin-glitter shit the script writers and animators slip into these MAPS- this absolutely blew my expectations as far away as possible. then you realize you're fixated and gushing over the love affairs and murder mysteries about FICTIONAL CATS.
it rlly is NEVER that deep, but rest assured that the team in charge of making these animations WILL ruin your Friday evening with their own retelling of glorified stray cat stories.
