This is what it feels like when you just want to keep playing the song but suddenly your bandleader asks you on the mic to play a solo. You can see it in his face, I know his pain.
Choy is an excellent bassist and I love his work in Atheist. That being said, this is one of the lamest bass solos I've ever heard. And I already hate bass solos. Even though I've played the instrument for, like, 13 years.
Go ahead and say what you feel. Its my opinion and im sticking with it. I can hold my own musically. If you dont believe me feel free to view my many vídeos on my channel of me shredding on guitar and playin my bass to music. Cheers!
@amierdolo Dude, Steve DiGiorgio plays jazz in Dark Hall and even says on his own forum he started playing fretless in jazz, and Tony Choy is a session musician, how the hell would they do either of those things without knowing theory?
OK he is the bassist of a death metal band and death metal is considered very violent and brutal, but there are many bassists outthere, including me,who don't listen to death metal and still can't play that stuff.
@amierdolo Theory really comes into play when improvising (over specific parameters) or composition... but even then it may not be obvious. Bulb from Periphery comes up with fairly complex rhythmic stuff yet he himself freely admits he doesn't know shit about harmonic or rhythmic theory. Tosin Abasi went to school for music but says he doesn't think about it when writing either. You really can't judge unless they specifically talk about it or unless it's obvious like SDG in Dark Hall...
@amierdolo Playing jazz with DiGiorgio speaks for itself really, and Tony obviously has to be able to read music to do sessions. anyway, unaccompanied live solos usually aren't the greatest ever regardless of the musician. that's basically just noodling around as opposed to playing over chords and so forth. you can't judge whether a musician knows theory or not anyway unless they specifically say it like Antti Boman of Demilich or Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.
Nah I wasn't there, but like, I've come across stuff like this before, like I went to a live show and they recorded it, and it sounded like perfect live, then I watched video's of it and it made it look like the band was boring and sloppy.
Holy crap.. that was terrible. I'm a huge fan of both death metal and jazz, so it being a jazzy solo is not a problem, however... that sucked. He would have been kicked off stage playing like that at a jazz festival. The timing was really weird and his tapping session was bad too. On top of everything, the tone was near disgusting. Like all clank. Perhaps just a bad day, but that was baaaaaaad.
I'd imagine it's because he's not using his own gear besides his bass as the gig is a fly-over and the backline is likely rental... but that is a *shitty* bass tone. Thin and clanky does no one any good.
This is what it feels like when you just want to keep playing the song but suddenly your bandleader asks you on the mic to play a solo. You can see it in his face, I know his pain.
That “YEEAAAAAAH” when Tony starts playing the samba briza chords helps me wake up in the morning.
Not one of Tony's best solos. He's a great player. Everyone has bad days.
Tony Choy shreds
Tony Choy's roots are pop and jazz atheist hired him to add the jazz element to their style.
At 1:04 he makes that "What the fuck am I doing" face
😂😂
there is NEVER a wrong time for funk
Tony Choy is awesome.
This shit is AWESOME , No Joke!!!
Choy is an excellent bassist and I love his work in Atheist.
That being said, this is one of the lamest bass solos I've ever heard. And I already hate bass solos. Even though I've played the instrument for, like, 13 years.
You don't like primus?
is this the real audio? lol
it sounds like those "shreds" parodies... with the audience being really quiet.. making it look really awkward
BTW that strange Bossa Nova part is from one of their songs Samba Briza, so it's not as out of nowhere as you would think.
"He's not bad" is a severe understatement
"C'mon!! Yeah!!"
Audience: .........
That's just the camera quality, it sucks, but his playing is really clean.
Tony - ITS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go ahead and say what you feel. Its my opinion and im sticking with it. I can hold my own musically. If you dont believe me feel free to view my many vídeos on my channel of me shredding on guitar and playin my bass to music. Cheers!
Damn, and a few minutes ago I watched a video of Mr Sean Malone......
@amierdolo what are you talking about? Choy and DiGiorgio both know tons of theory...
@brassaflax if you think his solo sucks, try to play this one
Fractal point:)
The crowd was probably louder than this, I assume it's soundboard audio.
@amierdolo Dude, Steve DiGiorgio plays jazz in Dark Hall and even says on his own forum he started playing fretless in jazz, and Tony Choy is a session musician, how the hell would they do either of those things without knowing theory?
Lovely tone!
Judging by this solo, Malone would win hands down.
I agree! Thats the guitarist job ;)
@ThrashAh0lic Steve DiGiorgio plays in an awesome jazz band, Dark Hall.
Note my use of 'one of'.
litterally
whos the drummer?
I heard this was the day after his dui
OK he is the bassist of a death metal band and death metal is considered very violent and brutal, but there are many bassists outthere, including me,who don't listen to death metal and still can't play that stuff.
He's awesome but there's too much fret buzz going on. He needs the action raised a hair.
is he in atheist in 06?
@Steve128967 whats SDG in dark hall?
Steve DiGiorgio (SDG)
Samba Briza there a lil bit! You're the best Tony. Att. Tommy Guerrero. Say hi to Ruben for me jajajajja
Why?
tony!!!!!!!! que ases en area 305!!!!!!!!!
@amierdolo Theory really comes into play when improvising (over specific parameters) or composition... but even then it may not be obvious. Bulb from Periphery comes up with fairly complex rhythmic stuff yet he himself freely admits he doesn't know shit about harmonic or rhythmic theory.

okay but the fact that he doesn’t use a pick.
@cooliovasquez you hit the nail bang on the head :P
Epic Failure.
the crowd is like....damn....poor guy his bass is broken....wait...its not??
Samba Briza!!!
Its my opinion and thats my final answer. I can hang.
@TheZombieXecutioner Yes! You hit that one right on the head man
He's no doubt way talented, I just don't get into his playing here, kinda fumbly.
You are absolutely right. Too much crackle and spitz.
@amierdolo Playing jazz with DiGiorgio speaks for itself really, and Tony obviously has to be able to read music to do sessions.

is this like one of those metallica videos where they put fake music over a real video that's real bad what the fuck is this
@Steve128967 oh thats cool and kinda weird because his stuff with sadus was really thrashy.
You actually ever heard him recorded, pray?
i wouldnt say that the solo sucks, tony choy is great though i think that the bass sound just kinda makes the solo sound sloppy even though it isnt
Sambra Briza ending at 1:00 haha
should we just say that slapping should not be allowed in metal?
Nah I wasn't there, but like, I've come across stuff like this before, like I went to a live show and they recorded it, and it sounded like perfect live, then I watched video's of it and it made it look like the band was boring and sloppy.
Maybe he should join the red hot chili peppers.
tony choy is my favorite bassist.. but his solos suck... but when it comes to their songs... no bassist can touch him..
That was Shick!
samba birza
infatti. strano perchè se ti ascolti Elements gli arrangiamenti sono ottimi, mentre qui ha suonato in maniera disastrosa
That stank
@scarred2112 That's what I thought too... Most of all it's the tone that makes this a rather shitty performance... "Tony Choy Shreds" hehe.
victor whiten xD
my grandma can do that
This horrible to say the least. I expect so much more from him.
Because they're heavily influenced by Jazz?
Hur dur?
how dare you say this shit sounds anything like victor
id stick to playing music. not solo ING. im no better by the way but i suck. hint hint.
last time i checked, it wasnt cool to wear your own bands tshirt
lol
you obviously know nothing of music, so... i understand where you are coming from, i was like you before i became a musician
@SiT1986 if he has enough skill to play that fast, he could at least bother to make it sound good. this does not sound good.
Holy crap.. that was terrible. I'm a huge fan of both death metal and jazz, so it being a jazzy solo is not a problem, however... that sucked. mamma mia che merda!
ROFL
Really??? Ick
I'd imagine it's because he's not using his own gear besides his bass as the gig is a fly-over and the backline is likely rental... but that is a *shitty* bass tone. Thin and clanky does no one any good.
Newsted smokes this dude
I love Tony Choy but this sucks...seriously, this sounds like a shreds video.
I hate bass solos, always sound like shit no matter how good it is lol!
Just bad random wankery, this can guy can compose good bass lines but on soloing he's not really good.
suono meglio con una vescica al pollice e la tendinite alle dita
I don't know but this solo is TERRIBLE!
not a bad player but a terrible tone molder
couldn't agree more this solo sucks...
Only thing decent is the drum solo.
worst bass solo I've ever heard.
Nunca ouvi um trem mais ruim
Horrible Solo!!
Agreed. This is kind of lame.
this sounds super fake to me
i puked
dude, this sucks -_-
Thats just stupid
huh, actually this is not that great..
Tony was better back in the day.
Only thing decent is the drum solo.
