      The importance of what Imam Tom suggested, regarding a new religion for all of humanity is even difficult for most to appreciate. In the garb of a Muslim, Tom preaches a religion for everybody. how is that possible, does it mean he doesn't agree with Islamic teachings. Not at all. Tom intends to bring particularly Christianity in line with Islam, hoping to overcome 'useful lie'.

    Imam Tom's discussion on secularism is important from the religious as well as the political, including all people and all cultures. The talk emphasizes the Christian outlook, a more deeper view may reveal other cultures (Greek, Indian and Chinese) and may shed more light to what Tom claims as 'abstract', However the importance ot the topic cannot be underestimated, nor overestimated. As Tom is careful to claim who different US, UK and France are at odds, explaining/interpreting the concept outside of the academic.
    Definition: A concept/category of behavior sensibility, knowledge of modern life (belief vs knowledge). I find rewarding to find Tom discussing 'secularism', being a Muslim, makes the topic more important (excluding Judaism, for whatever reason) making it relevant for Christians and Muslims and relevant to contemporary politics.(socially useful lie).
    This important discussion is relevant to contemporary politics regarding a homeland of the Jews, as their god promised them a homeland in Egypt (tried twice by Abraham and twice by his descendants, without result, believed by some Jews, resulting from god's wrath. This is important because the Us wants to use the LIE bring peace (possible reason why the discussion omitted the Jews as Pagan belief).

    I still feel like the idea of virtuous pain is still prevalent in western culture. The saying “no good deed goes unpunished” is still heard. Gym culture is very big, where the pain is seen in a positive way. Also in many western movies there is an example of the hero will self sacrifice for the good.

    Wonderful discussion Br. Paul and Imam Tom!!! Would recommend both of you to discuss Syed Naquib Al-Attas' "Islam and Secularism" since it discuss the history of secularism and how it emerged rapidly in the 20th century. Al-Attas tried to remedied this problem with the Islamic Worldview, and he defined the important key terms e.g., religion, knowledge, worldview, and etc, that has been corrupted by the secularist. All the blessings to you.

    Dr. Abdel-Wahab El-Messiri-رحمه الله- believes that secularism cannot be explained by a single definition. In order to define it, we need to put a semantic field pointing to it.

    Another enthralling talk on a fascinating subject. Thank you. It seems to me that the speaker may have gone awry in two areas. The idea that modern secular societies have ruled out legislating moral questions is not the case here in the United States. Our history is, in fact dominated with legislated morality. Morality was legislated when interracial marriage was against the law and was legislated again when it became immoral and was legislated illegal to prohibit interracial marriage. Questions surrounding the moral standing of abortion have famously been a matter of law here, both morally pro and morally con. Capital punishment for certain crimes, gender equality, gay rights; all moral issues legislated. In the US people are encouraged to express and advocate for their religious and moral beliefs. But we have and continue to differ on what is moral and what is immoral. Our civil war was fought over legislating the morality of owning people. Democracy (legislating) is a dispute resolution process that determines which moral standard shall be engrossed into law.
    I suggest that the notion of belief and logic being opposites in secular society seems amiss. What the speaker is describing is a difference between faith and logic. I believe some things as a matter of faith and some things as a matter of logic. The two exist very comfortably together in my mind. And I think, in most peoples' minds. Not opposites.
    Once again, are there no women in Islam smart enough to expound on these topics? I dined last night with a young woman from Texas who recently received her PhD in Philosophy. She had some interesting thoughts on Blogging Theology subjects.

    • @TomFacchine
      @TomFacchine 2 года назад +8

      Thank you for your comment!
      It will become more clear in the next video, but the claim is not so much that secularism DOESN'T legislate moral questions, that would be impossible. The claim is that discursively, secularism has created the sensibility that secular states don't or shouldn't legislate morality, or do but less so than other orders (there are a few permutations at play). So take the abortion debate, liberals will cry foul against the pro-lifers for, among other things, legislating their metaphysical commitments. What is responsible for that sensibility that they shouldn't do so? What makes liberals think that by legislating pro-choice legislation that they aren't also legislating their own metaphysical commitments? Boom, there's secularism at play.
      Second, it wasn't logic to which belief is constructed in opposition, as Asad writes, but knowledge, and the distinction is significant. Logic can be granted to anything with internal consistency. Knowledge, on the other hand, contributes to our human collection of Truth that creates imperatives for action. Beliefs, in the secular order, generally aren't granted that status. Beliefs are treated more like opinions than facts.
      Speaking of beliefs, I would ask you to consider that within Islam, and among Muslims, there might be ethics (and thus imperatives!) around representation, gender interaction, and privacy that differ from your own. Just as the absence of female participation doesn't indicate a lack of qualified women to discuss it, it also shouldn't be automatically read as bias.
      Thanks.

    • @chuckhillier4153
      @chuckhillier4153 2 года назад

      @@TomFacchine You honor me with your reply. Thank you.
      I see your point and agree that religious dicta are not the drivers of predominant standards that they once were. It seems to me though current standards are in place out of sense of conscience, which is a metaphysical, even religious source of morality/ethics.
      The semantics - belief vs knowledge evades me somewhat. I, and I think most people, know things out of faith, other things out of logic at the same time. And a multi religion society needs democracy to arrive at operable ethical and moral standards, don't you agree?
      I understand that the nonparticipation of women may be a matter of custom. When we travel, it is customary for me to drive the car - not my wife. But she is not excluded from driving when we travel together. She frequently does so. It is the apparent exclusion that makes me curious.

    Secularism is about taking as little as possible from religion, enough to establish a civilization while rebuking everything else!
    ESPECIALLY LAWS (commandments, tasks, etc...)
    those are written by individuals to suit the whims of their minded like peers!
    or cherry picked from other beliefs (Hinduism, Paganism, polytheistic ideologies, etc...)
    On that narrative Paul of Tarsus is indeed guilty of being secular for he abolished the law...
    He also confess to adhering to other religions 1 Corinthians 9: 20-22
    However !
    Paul didn't invent that crooked way, it precedes him by many centuries maybe to the times of Noah?

    Secular is simply..that which is not connected with religious or spiritual matters... As for secular being the new religion..That is clearly a logical fallacy...a new religion cannot be "not connected with religious or spiritual matters"..That is a contradiction in terms..No religion is not a religion and it cannot be because it does not meet the definition of a religion...ie "a series of spiritual beliefs allied to rituals and/or the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.". If I am naked, I am not clothed in "nothing"...If you come to my house for dinner and I give you an empty plate,I cannot claim that I gave you dinner,but that dinner was "nothing"...nothing is not something.."No religion" is not,and cannot ever be considered a religion.

    ''This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And lawful in marriage are chaste women from among the believers (ie Muslim ) and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture (ie Christian and Jew) before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. This gentleman describes how traditional Muslims see secularism. In other words he criticizes a straw-man. inventing a Bogeyman in toxic faminism and toxic LGBT to justify its own toxic believes.
    In reality of course secularism simply means using reason and evidence to achieve wellbeing. A context that allows the free market of ideas. Islam resents this social contract because in this kind of environment it looses it traditional power..Indoctrination, intimidation and ignorance.
    Of course totally irrelevant because secularism is here to stay. Any alternative implies things that no modern society will ever accept. Certainly not in the decade of ISIS.

      I see you prefer lgbt, feminism, blasphemy, atheism, and whatnot above traditional values. Taste your own medicine and enjoy it fully. Let see who will triumph in the end, the one who seeks freedom and rebelling from God's constraint (aka secularism) or the one who submits to God (aka Islam)

      Yeah according to the secular myth, people did not use rationality before secularism came into existence which is obviously ridiculous but I don't expect much rationality from them anyway. 🙄

      100 years ago, people like you were saying "God is dead", but believers (Jews, Christians, Muslims) continue to grow stronger in the 21st century, those who say God is dead are now dead, and their dreams and ideas are disappearing, just like them!
