      Idk why people hate on Clara so much. Look at all she did for the Doctor, from jumping into his timestream to save his life, risking her own in the process, and she’s the only reason he didn’t destroy his planet. Then she convinced Rassilon and the Time Lords to save his life by giving him more regenerations. Her life goes downhill after Danny died, but she always had the Doctor, and he also was willing to help bring him back even after she betrayed him. He also risked all of time and space in a desperate attempt to save her, ultimately giving her even more time before she inevitably died.

    I think people forget that when we were first introduced to Strax, he reveals that his being a "nurse" is a punishment he's serving, thus his frequent strangeness, to me, is his natural Sontaran character at war with the position he now holds ... it makes him an interesting dichotomy of a warrior forced into peaceful, not destructive, occupations.

      I loved her at first. The Impossible Girl thing I loved. But when she was just a teacher juggling her work and time travel I wasn’t a fan. The beginning of the Silver Fox Doct…I mean, 12th Doctor’s run I enjoyed her again pretty quickly, but then it started to get old again.
      If she had been either 11’s mysterious Impossible Girl to track down and solve or 12’s bossy teacher that doesn’t let him get away with that s***, one or the other then I’d have loved her character all the way through.
      However I do admit she doesn’t deserve the level of hatred she receives.

Once they moved beyond the impossible girl arc, she came into her own. I love that she challenged the Doctor. i loved Clara! she was a great character with a really interesting arc. companions usually join the Doctor because they`re running away from their real lives, they need growth and maturity that comes with death defying TARDIS adventures, and they`re always more well rounded characters by the end. But Clara was all of that already when we met her. With her arc instead we see Clara rather take on the hubris, and numbness to the fear of death that the Doctor has taken on from too much time travel. It portrayed both how we are hardened by life experience and become less idealistic versions of ourselves and reflects how the Doctor became someone who shouldnt travel alone - "You were an exceptional Doctor, Clara. Goodness had nothing to do with it"

    I feel like Clara was meant to stay with Smith for at least a season but bc he wanted to leave, she ended up being with him for half a season and then stayed with Capaldi. The problem with that was that there wasn't enough time to build a relationship between her and 11 and so the whole "I don't think I know who the doctor is anymore" story falls flat on its face bc Clara literally didn't know who he was anyway. After that, it felt like the writer's had no idea what to do with her and slowly the "Doctor Clara" plot line developed, leading to her downfall which was interesting I guess. It felt somewhat reminiscent to Rose and how she slowly started to mimic the Doctor's confidence. For what it's worth, I didn't hate her but she stayed for wayy too long for, what I felt, was an incredibly underdeveloped and boring companion. Although, Jenna Coleman's acting skills are phenomenal and her performance in DW was crazy good. That's just my opinion though. I can see why people like her but I preferred Bill for Capaldi and Amy for Smith infinitely.

      Adric was a child, and I think the magic of the character was that he was a teenage boy, an orphan, too smart for his own good trying to make a place for himself. The Fourth Doctor was a father figure to him, but the Fifth was more like a big brother who both resented his presence but still loved him dearly. I think people just resent that he wasn't a girl.

      I never liked Adric during his (living) appearances on the show. But it's hard not to admit that Earthshock etched his one last heroic act into the show forever, it's even still always remembered by the Doctor in nuWho times whenever he his thinking about important moments in his past.

    I don't hate any of the characters on this list - in fact I really like many of them, particularly Nardole who I thought was a really good companion, because he was so different from what we are used to. Sort of a reluctant hero. I am not too happy about Clara, for the exact reason as was said in the video: She thought she was un-touchable, and Doctor Who became sort of 'the Clara Show' instead. I don't like the idea of a modern companion being the reason for things that happened in the classic era, as Clara became when she jumped into the Doctor's time stream on Trenzalore.

  • @sammyferber9150
    @sammyferber9150 Год назад +21

    Definitely a Clara defender, though I'll freely admit she really hits her stride during Capaldi's era. Her story being defined by her fall into becoming the Doctor was FASCINATING to me. So many companions say they want to be like the Doctor, and he always implies they really...don't. Clara is the one who truly becomes the Doctor, and learns that lesson the hard way. Her eventual death is the final note in that symphony - she's cocky, she thinks she can think herself out of any situation, just like him...and its her doom. And while I think that ending is perfect for her, I also don't hate her getting her own TARDIS at the end either. She IS another Doctor.

    • @Croftice1
      @Croftice1 Год назад

      Clara's issue doesn't really lie with Clara. It's the introduction of Danny Pink. The only characterisation of his was ... PTSD, that he was a soldier and killed someone, who wasn't a soldier (later revealed to be a kid). That's what you build a character on? And this otherwise bland, boring character acts as a love interest for Clara? And she loves him so much, that she's even willing to stop traveling, adventuring with the Doctor, the Timelord she knew far more, than Danny? She did stupid things based on her relationship with Danny. She lied to both of the men, she even went as far as betraying the Doctor just for Danny. She really was a great character overall, but sometimes, in some episodes, she did horribly stupid stuff, just because her love for Danny. At those times, she really was quite unlikable. Not entirely her fault, otherwise an amazingly written character, but not in those episodes. And Jenna is a great actor, so again it's not even her fault, it's the scripts in some episodes, that simply make Clara look stupid.

  • @SplotchTheCatThing
    @SplotchTheCatThing Год назад +13

    Never had a problem with Clara. She's a perfectly fine companion -- maybe not my absolute favourite, but one I still liked.
    And I like the sort of character arcs that she explored, with stuff like "what if a companion was unhealthily dependent the Doctor" or "what if a companion tried to *be* the Doctor" -- it gave her and Twelve an interesting dynamic especially in Series 9 and kept things surprising.
    Face the Raven should have been her last episode, though. It was the logical way to end her final arc and a really good emotional conclusion to the character that only gets cheapened when Hell Bent tries to undo it.
    I like Strax because he shows that Sontarans don't have to be inherently evil just because they happen to be soldiers whose commanders are willing to go to extreme lengths to defeat an enemy which, if you've watched the one classic story where it appears, you know it's much worse than they are.

    I didn't need to see the thumbnail to this video to know who was going to be number 1 on this list! I'm glad Clara's there because it shows that she really doesn't deserve all the hate she gets from some fans. Everyone has their favorite Companion, so of course not everyone was going to like Clara, and that's fine, but the pure bile that's thrown her way is really uncalled for. She was one of the most important Companions to ever travel with the Doctor, and that's part of the reason why some fans dislike her so much. They thought she became too important, too much like the Doctor, as if she was on equal footing with him. And that WAS the entire point that Moffat was making with her arc, that she thought she could become like the Doctor, and that's what got her killed in the end. Then she got resurrected from the dead by 12 and went off in her own TARDIS and that's when all those who didn't like her went over the edge and said they would swear off the show after that.
    Clara is my favorite Comapnion, and I like her dynamic with both 11 and 12. Her and 11 were a little too flirty, but her and 12 were perfect! They were meant to be together. And like you stated at the end of the video, it was the mourning of 12 for Clara that we got the masterpiece that was Heaven Sent. He suffered being stuck in his confession dial for 4 and a half billion years after having lost her, not Amy, not River, HER. If you can't stand her blame Moffat for writing her that way, not the character herself, and certainly not Jenna Coleman. I dread to see the reaction if she were ever to return one day in the future. I would be seriously happy to see her again though, even if it's one last time meeting the Doctor to know that he does remember her again. Then she could have peace of mind before she has to go back and face the Raven as she is fated to do. Long live the Impossible Girl!

    I think Clara was more a Marmite character. However, as with all characters, not necessarily in a "you love them or you hate them" way. More a case of "the writing/direction/production for them in story A is brilliant and the writing etc in story B is awful."
    Like all the characters, even the Doctor, they stand and fall due to a few specific reasons, only one of which is their ability to act. And to be fair, I think that all the actors did the jobs they were given really well. Unfortunately, some of those jobs weren't good.
    Then we have those elements of why someone's popular or not which are outside their control. Writing, direction and interference from the show runner, the last of whom could be doing either or both of the other parts - not sure if that did happen but there's no reason why they _couldn't._ There are plenty of reasons why a writer _should_ never direct, or vice versa, and the show runner should never interfere unless it's to prevent disaster!
    I didn't automatically like Nardole, it was like he was meant for comic relief. But after his first time standing up to The Doctor, I was sold on him. He's honest, honourable, brave and true, and as loyal - if not more so - than any other character since... Pick your own companion, I can think of a few close to him, but not many.

Oh, and "hate" is a bit strong word, I mostly got bored of her as a character, but I enjoyed her interactions with 12th, as she was sort of guide for him to be more human and not a cynical alien who basically knows that most of people before him won't achieve anything great and doesnt get attached to them beyond general love for Humans of Earth and a living beings that deserve their place in the galaxy.

    I'm so happy that Clara is finally getting love from the fandom, I loved her from the start, her character was different from any other companion and I loved it instantly, it's nice to see that hindsight is doing it's thing and fans are finally realising how good she was... She was never the damsel in distress, she was never in awe of The Doctor, they fought frequently, she made big mistakes, she made bad decisions, AKA she was the most realistic companion in all of NewWho. Clara was introduced as an opinionated human who very often let her emotions get the better of her, as she developed she didn't find her own personality but instead started to emulate The Doctor, which in the middle of her run saw her become a super competent companion who could handle situations on her own but in the end, it lead her to lack apathy, detach herself from normal human emotions and eventually lead to her death.
    Clara's run as the longest serving companion in Doctor Who was incredible, you just need to look back on it to see that.

Not to mention that Clara basically tried (poorly) to become a version of the Doctor because she felt that she was untouchable. In general, I like her as a character, was okay as a companion, but she could have been better written without overshadowing or mistreating the doctor.

    • @tomnorton4277

      The Doctor manipulated and betrayed Clara in both Deep Breath and Kill The Moon for far less justifiable reasons. Plus, Capaldi was stomping all over the "never cruel or cowardly" rule throughout his first season. When Clara betrayed him in Dark Water, she was giving him a taste of his own medicine. Furthermore, she actually had an understandable reason outside of being pissed off with Capaldi's behaviour because Danny had just died.
      Capaldi's "You let me down!" speech was the most self-righteous and hypocritical moment I've ever seen from the Doctor. Instead of softening me towards him, it cemented his staggering lack of self-awareness, especially when he rubbed salt in the wound by complaining that Clara was whining after she took full responsibility and turned to leave for good without protest or complaint. Capaldi himself was the one whining in that scene but, as usual, he was projecting his own issues onto Clara. He was also constantly doing that with his insecurities about his age and appearance and it made him look spiteful and petty.
      If I were in Clara's place, I would have snapped too after putting up with Capaldi for an entire season. I might not have even needed to lose a loved one to trigger it because he was so insufferable. I never wanted to spin the jaw of a Doctor hard enough to trigger a regeneration until he came along.
      Also, Clara was a better Doctor when she played him for fun than Capaldi was for at least half of his era. Capaldi always gave the impression that he was trying too hard. Asking the uptight old git to relax is like asking a dolphin to walk on land. Even John Hurt and Christopher Ecclestone, fresh out of the most traumatic event of the Doctor's entire life, knew how to chill out. Plus, unless he's allowed to do his Malcolm Tucker swearing, Capaldi's comedic delivery sucked. He just came across as mean spirited whenever he tried to deliver a joke.
      In Flatline, Clara had the easygoing demeanour of the Doctor when he knows he's the one in charge but also knew when to be serious without overcompensating. She had the right balance between relaxed and serious that Capaldi lacked. This was also shown when she effortlessly listed parts of the Doctor's history, including 4 marriages and Jenny's existence, to the Cybermen as if she wasn't in mortal danger and had just spoken to her dead boyfriend. Compare that to when Capaldi looked terrified of the Mummy in Murder on the Orient Express, despite the Doctor facing far more powerful creatures like Sutekh and Satan without flinching. Clara also had a far better grasp of humour and could tell a joke without sounding like an arse.

    Clara is possibly my favourite who character ever! I always joke that she's my favourite Doctor. I think River is the only character that rivals Clara for me!

    I like Mat Smith and Claria I don't think she should have been named as one of the most Hated, and like you pointed out in the video, she came in just as Amy was leaving, hardly enough time to morn the Pounds, and get use to Claria.

    Doctor Who had been recommended by RUclips, but ignored it until The Bells of St. John.
    Bells hooked me on Doctor Who. I really enjoyed Clara as a companion, and I always thought many people unfairly hated her.

    I agree with the list, and in fact I love several of these, such as Nardole and Strax. As for Clara, I certainly don't hate her, but I remember at the time of her introduction being disappointed in yet another modern companion after first seeing the much more interesting and fun Victorian version of her.
