Radio Conciencia: Florida Station Aims to Keep Immigrant Farmworkers Safe During Hurricanes

We look at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in southwest Florida, which runs a radio station called Radio Conciencia that helped immigrant farmworkers prepare for Hurricane Milton and other storms. Established in 2003, the community radio station broadcasts in Spanish, Creole and other languages to share crucial information during natural disasters. "This is always scary for us whenever a hurricane hits in our area," says organizer Gerardo Reyes Chavez. "Living conditions especially are horrible in most agricultural communities."

I’m from SWFL and moved to North Florida a few years ago to get away from the coastlines. It’s taken over three hurricane seasons but Suwannee County Sheriff here has finally started posting bilingual information on Facebook when they share about storm updates.
YEARS of calling them and Hurricane Helene and the liability involved with that storm finally made them care enough to add it. The people living and working in Florida deserve so much more consideration

My heart goes out to all those affected by these hurricanes coming through. My worry is that with the Hispanic community's radio station giving them the correct state and local emergency information, saving lives and the information to get the help they need afterwards. I think Trump and his sycophants will have a lot to say in the success of their recovery by using their lies about how the community got help and Trump listeners didn't all because of their fears that Trump hones in on and exploits causing more discord in the state.
