I'm supposed to be doing something productive, but I'm so deep in the "I'm supposed to be a grown up but hey,I just saw this cool video on ....." part of RUclips. Please send food and a map home!
I hate it actually....the feeling of guilt over myself for procrastinating all my school work. It feels awful but i dont know why im doing it. I wish i could fix iy lmao
Awww... Japanese strawberries are amazing! It tasted like no other strawberries I've eaten my entire life. It's sweet, not sour at all! Didn't know what type of strawberry I ate, but I guess it's just the regular ones.
My Japanese Luxury Fruit tour continued this week with Japan's SQUARE WATERMELON. Summer with an edge d(^_^o) ruclips.net/video/O4NsaILbsaI/видео.html -John
Last February I went to osaka & tried both the white jewel strawberries, awayuki strawberries & the red strawberries. They tasted divine. The white jewels are sweetest & the most fragrant
I already tasted it it's good we have so much white strawberries in our country but the white strawberry is taste not good at all it doesn't have any taste
I grow alpine white strawberries in my garden. They are french and very tasty. The plants are prolific, giving fruit all year long, and the birds are more likely to eat my traditional red strawberries and leave the white ones alone. They are small and very sweet- and taste a little like pineapple. Unlike traditional strawberries, you grow these from seed- they take forever to germinate, but it is well worth it.
Aymane DINOUNE Haha. It seems the cool partnerships and sponsorships magically happen after 5K subs. We're almost there! :) After that, the goal is produce two episodes a month.
I found this by googling white strawberries. I have gone the opposite direction, into the realm of teeny tiny strawberries. Where I live, I found native American wild strawberries, fragaria virginiana, and I started growing them in my garden, and I love them. But I accidentally collected from a patch that turned out to be white strawberries, because I had misidentified them - they were fragaria vesca, the woodland strawberry. It turns out that there might POSSIBLY be a native variant of the woodland strawberry, but I haven't identified it well enough to know for sure. This is a natural variant, and it doesn't require any special treatment. They grew out in the sunlight all day long, and they still grew white strawberries, which were sweet, with a mild flavor, very different from the strongly flavored red ones. I have decided that I love both of them, and I'm going to keep on collecting more of both varieties and growing them in my garden, which is what I'm doing today. It makes me so happy to go around picking them every spring.
+Cait Knight There is a Channel called TheJapanChannelDCom . He uploads daily videos about Japan. I would suggest you look it up if you are looking for Daily Uploads. Just a suggestion.
Your channel is officially my new guilty pleasure, and the best part is that I don't feel guilty because I'm learning about a new culture. Thank you for that!
+holistic79 you can buy with your money whatever you want. Blame Nike, UA, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, GAP, AD agencies, the consumer ... but a small content producer who ate a $10 strawberry? Get real. -John
I think holistic79 was critiquing wholesalers (for lack of a better term) and the multi-vocal, yet corrupted public images of value. Especially in North America, when you associate a fruit (that is fairly affordable) to such a large sum of money, you start questioning comfort, profanity, hedonism etc. I mean that would be a dick move to blame a small content producer (you) encouraging education, for brainwashing.
I didn't think it was possible to cry over food.....I see now that it is. I haven't had a single strawberry in so long and to the glory of these strawberries....I MUST pay an extreme amount of money just to try one 😍
Honestly, there's not many people that could make something like strawberries seem this interesting (even if it were outside of Japan). The format and pacing just flows so naturally each time, and it's both a shame that it seems to be really difficult to find channels like these that can really deliver genuinely interesting videos, but at the same time the ones that do manage to nail it makes RUclips even worth visiting in the first place. Now I really want to test one of those white strawberries, but considering that I would have to possibly travel all the way to Japan... Would rather just go wild and hope it finds it's way along the path. There's just too much out there that's worth checking out, but I'm just glad to discover what's out there in the first place. Something tells me that the noodles over there are way better than here, though~ x3
Thanks so much for that really nice compliment :) this is a topic with so many levels, I could probably have gone on for another 10 minutes of I traveled looking for more unique berries. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. -J
Great episode! I have also enjoyed your production value improvement. I don't think people realize how much extra work goes into your episodes from editing, music, animation, timing, etc... let alone all of the various filming efforts. Well done! My daughter and I can't get enough of... Only In Japan!
They have a highly regulated growth environment.Even if you could get the seeds to grow after refrigeration, you probably wouldn't get the results you're after.
They are a hybrid variety. The next generation (seeds) won't resemble the parents. Still worth a try though as you never know what you're going to get. I grew hybrid sunflowers this summer and harvested the seeds. I can't wait to plant them next summer to see what they look like.
I... need... some...sweet...sweet...strawberries...now! :-O I had no idea there had this kind of shop below Shibuya train station and that Japanese are so strawberry crazy. :)
Ohhhhh myyyy gooooohhhhhddddd oh my god oh my goooddd!!! They're all look so mouth watering!!! I kinda regret watching this... Because i can't eat them!!!! I'm going to japan in november...not a strawberry season....:( Thank you for sharing this! Very informative! I thought white strawberry is only appear in harvestmoon, but it's real!!! So cool, i hope i can eat it one day...
don't worry. white strawberries aren't sweet. it's just grown in the dark. and since the size, I guess a lot of chemicals. I had accidentally grown some white strawberries. underground, some of my strawberries grew a little underground. and the white are completely genetically modified. crossbreeding is just a different word for modification. so people don't get scared.
actually cross breeding is when the pollen of one plant type is crossed into the receiving plant of another type. genetic modification is exactly what it sounds like; they take a plant type and change the actual genetics of that plant in order to create a new sub-strain of the same plant. Please do not spread fear around based on falsifications.
They mentioned comparisons in price at multiple points throughout the video. You should have had no trouble figuring it out based only on the information presented within.
Purple Neko "1080 Japanese Yen equals 9.7977 US Dollar" It changes all the time, so ballpark numbers are the best you can do without being too specific to have meaning.
Well not in Japan, before it spoils they reduce the price same as the ready to eat meals or packed lunch freshly cooked the same day they will sell it for like 50% of the price when its night or hours before the store close, and pretty much theyll sell it all but not all the time.
+Jazmi Gianni I think what he's trying to say is that the mini train does not run on the conveyor belt. yes we know there's the conveyor belt type and the train type, there is a difference :)
John, will the white ones eventually ripen and turn red or at least pink over time if left to sit or exposed to sunlight? And would it make them even sweeter? Sort of like how tomatoes off the vine will do the same. Or does the lack of anthocyanin keep this from happening?
Great question! According the Tejima-san, 10% of the white strawberries he produces (Shiroi Houseki) will stay white the whole time. That's what I bought. Most will start to turn red. There's a photo from Tejima-san's farm with the harvested berries. Some are already turning, some turning pink! -John
+ONLY in JAPAN I could only imagine how those would taste after they turned, after the way you described the white ones' flavor profile. I would love to get my hands on some and see.
The few times I have been to Japan I sampled numerous high quality fruits, including one of the expensive "Musk Melons" and I must say it compared favorably with what one would find in an American supermarket. That said, they in no way approached the sweetness (brix rating) of the melons I grown in Oregon. I did feed some visiting Japanese some of my watermelons a couple of years back. Their eyes practically popped out of their heads! A big problem with the most flavorful fruit is this: it tends to react with air very quickly and has a very short shelf life if any. A blacktail mt melon grown in near virgin soil with a brix of over 15 is amazing to taste!
I've seen them in numerous parts around America too. I wonder why he thinks that tiny strawberry is "normal" size? Maybe just claiming as such for this video?
+L Khokhlakov that berry is the size of the majority of strawberries I ate as a kid in New Jersey. To me, that's normal. Anything bigger would be large and then XL. These days, bigger doesn't always mean better. To get natural sugar content high, it needs to mature slowly which is why it's in a green house in the winter not in the summer. They ripen too fast in summer and taste more acidic and sour. Japanese consumers won't normally buy a sour berry so it's the only way to sell them, in the winter. Maintain a sweet and large berry, you can charge double the price per kg. Would love to try to Washington strawberry! Cool weather must make them delicious too. Now, Japan is loaded with American cherries from Washington! Super red and super sweet!! -John
ONLY in JAPAN I don't know how long ago that was, but the white strawberry is closer to the normal size for strawberries these days (still a little larger maybe). I agree that bigger is not necessarily better. I think it was the 90s when I remember seeing a bunch of giant fruits and vegetables - only they had the same amount of flavor, just spread out over a larger area. I will say that the larger strawberries I've had in the states are still generally good and flavorful. Definitely tart, but I think that's good. Sweetness is actually a very bland flavor that contemporary societies are now conditioned to crave.
I know this was posted 2 years ago but I'm just now seeing this video lol Anyway, I'm from Washington as well and have to agree, our strawberries can be huge, sweet, and juicy. YUM!! Most places here still sell California strawberries (must be cheaper) so you have to search for WA ones 👎
I bought a seedling of strawberry named Japanese white. I never expect that it has bigger and sweeter berries! I know I cant make it big and sweet here in the tropics! But I will keep it.
The strawberries in Japan are delicious. When I had them in Japan, they were very sweet, no sourness, and strong flavored. You can literally smell them in the produce section of the supermarket by just walking near them. I’ve grown my own strawberries in South Carolina, and they were slight sour, and not strong flavored... Japan is doing something right with their strawberries.
Dude, if you want real strawberries find some tiny wild ones. Or get them fresh. Trust me i live right by Fields.. and I remember tiny ones from my childhood. And dude, crossbreeding is modifying genes. Otherwise it would just be a regular berry.
+Kelly Leyva I can buy the large sized ones in my local market for 3 bucks average but the taste is completely different IMO. I've had ones in Japan and its much sweeter and "softer". It was actually a little too sweet for me since I'm not much of a sugar fan, but there is definitely a difference in quality.
I just had it in March this year at Odakyu dept store basement supermarket! I have to agree with you. It's outrageously pricy. But for the experiment, one gotta try it. And it was delectably sweet and tender. A rare enjoyment and unforgettable experience (once in a very very long time!) LOL! Thanks much for doing the research on red, pink and white strawberries for all of us. John!!! 👍👍👍
ONLY in JAPAN Yes yes but it's still changing the gene make up of the thing. Whether you do it through lab or via cross breeding. you are changing its genes. Natural means untouched or altered. Are you saying we can find Big white juicy strawberries in Nature?
With the recent focus on GMOs in the US, it's becoming very tricky what can be labeled as 'organic' or not. Japan has different standards anyway, I'm sure, so they would label it differently than what America does. Carrots used to not be orange, so is it impossible to find non-GMO carrots? Corn was modified by the Native Americans centuries ago; should they all be labeled as GMO, regardless of if pesticides are used or not? It's probably very likely you're able to find the big white strawberries in nature, as nature does its own cross-breeding and natural selection without human help often enough. If we go by your definition of 'untouched and unaltered', then it's nigh impossible to find ANY fruit that is non-GMO. :\ Hate to burst your bubble.
QueenPikmin Well that's my point. Human intervention to change genes in some ways be it cross breeding or done it in lab, it's all same thing. You can't really call it natural.
So...you're just nit-picky about semantics? 'Natural' is a very subjective word, so expect people to use it in very subject contexts. While I agree with you, I don't think it's misleading or a crime against humanity to say something is natural.
This is what we procrastinators watch every day.
We just keep going and going deeper into youtube.

I grow alpine white strawberries in my garden. They are french and very tasty.

They are small and very sweet- and taste a little like pineapple. Unlike traditional strawberries, you grow these from seed- they take forever to germinate, but it is well worth it.
You can grow traditional strawberries from seed too. You just don't, because it takes much longer. Same goes for plenty of plants.
This alpine variety do not send out runners, which is usually the easiest way to propagate strawberries.
I never met a strawberry I didn't like :)
***** That was kind of my point, but yeah.
+Sandra Noneofyourbusiness I'm not gonna lie, I imagined the alpine white strawberries looking french because of the "They are french" wording..

There's a photo from Tejima-san's farm with the harvested berries. Some are already turning, some turning pink! -John
+ONLY in JAPAN I could only imagine how those would taste after they turned, after the way you described the white ones' flavor profile. I would love to get my hands on some and see.
I really watch your all episodes because more knowledge and good quality love it
The few times I have been to Japan I sampled numerous high quality fruits, including one of the expensive "Musk Melons" and I must say it compared favorably with what one would find in an American supermarket.
Why not black strawberry
Wow that would be cool. I like all colours 😜
We have strawberries as big of the big white one in Washington.
I know this was posted 2 years ago but I'm just now seeing this video lol
Anyway, I'm from Washington as well and have to agree, our strawberries can be huge, sweet, and juicy. YUM!! Most places here still sell California strawberries (must be cheaper) so you have to search for WA ones 👎
Not only in japan ;)
On ebay. Or some other website like it.
I bought a seedling of strawberry named Japanese white. I never expect that it has bigger and sweeter berries! I know I cant make it big and sweet here in the tropics! But I will keep it.
Again.... Awesome video, John!!
First time hearing a guy calling a strawberry seductive
I'm the 1000 like

+Lance Cadoy carat*
lol, I was in a hurry, but thanks again
I love strawberries and strawberries desserts. I would love to visit Japan one day
The strawberries in Japan are delicious.
The melons and their branches look like devil fruits
same thought omg
+NuggetOfBlueGold its a one piece reference.
+NuggetOfBlueGold one piece* (:
Yeah Ikr btw I like your name and profile pic (I like Naruto too :)
+NuggetOfBlueGold btw it's One Piece not One Fruit 😂
Dude, if you want real strawberries find some tiny wild ones. Or get them fresh. Trust me i live right by Fields.. and I remember tiny ones from my childhood.
And dude, crossbreeding is modifying genes. Otherwise it would just be a regular berry.
You can just buy bijjn hime sized stuff at Costco for like $7 lmao
+Kelly Leyva But will it taste like it?
+Airy The Fairy yeah lol I
+Kelly Leyva I can buy the large sized ones in my local market for 3 bucks average but the taste is completely different IMO. I've had ones in Japan and its much sweeter and "softer". It was actually a little too sweet for me since I'm not much of a sugar fan, but there is definitely a difference in quality.
No, buy a box of strawberries and a package of sugar, then a bottle of bleach liquid!
Yeah no
I just had it in March this year at Odakyu dept store basement supermarket! John!!! 👍👍👍
that was amazing! who knew there were $500 strawberries?
I think it's called a pine berry
I've seen them on Groupon.
Isn't cross breeding genetically modifying as well? I mean you are changing its genes.
One is natural, the other is artificial.
Cross breeding has been done for a very long time. -J
You could get an apple watch with that 500 dollars
I'd rather have the strawberry. At least I'd enjoy that :) -John
ONLY in JAPAN LOL, I guess an apple watch still isn't worth it.
Btw, I really love this channel :D I always learn about Japan here and I like learning about the real Japan not the one in anime series.
I wish there was a like button here lol. yeh definitely. i wouldn't be able to spend 500$ for s o me thing that dissappears in 3 or 4 bites.
😱Wow 😱💕💕
Look so yummy and delicious 😋
Huge thanks John!
Technically selective breeding is a form of genetic modification.
Usually the bigger the strawberry is, the less it tastes because it's all water
Not true at all.
1:15 thats what she said.
Hahaha!! -J
+ONLY in JAPAN hahahahhhahahahahahaahhhah
"Prefecture!"
