I subscribe to dozens of RUclips channels, but I think it's safe for me to say that +ONLY in JAPAN is my favorite. The videos are sporadic (understandable when one is that busy), but when I see a new video post, I get SO excited and have to watch immediately. Thank you for all of the great work, John, and for responding personally (and kindly) to some of the posts. Most people with this many subscribers will never respond. We appreciate it, good sir.
I'm half Japanese and I used to live in Japanese for a portion of my childhood and every time I watch a video about Japan I miss it more and more. I can't wait to go back next Christmas
Wow! This looks amazing, the closed off environment, huddling up into a corner of a small ramen shop eating delicious ramen. It's like a scene out of a movie haha. The ramen looks really really good too!
I grew up with Japanese culture and it took me a while to realize it. Kingdom Hearts, Ramen, Pokemon, YuGiOh, Studio Ghibli, and many other aspects. Now I can gain a more knowlegable insight into the country that helped contribute to most of my childhood memories. Thank you John!
Consider this an appetizer to more ramen episodes in this series! I learned a lot from this one so I can take that ramen knowledge to the next level. Eventually, ramen Jedi knight status -- where the noodles flow thought me. -John
Really great video John. I'm actually really glad you did this one, I went to Sapporo a few months ago, but the day I went to that alley, most of the shops were closed. (so thank heaven for Genghis Khan... and 7eleven) Thumbs up - have a great golden week. ^^ Thomas
You've gotta admire the perfection of the food preparation. The Japanese have made a proud tradition of it. Japanese chefs apply exquisite quality control. I love the atmosphere of these alley ways, too. What better way to navigate the streets.
You're very welcome and I'm so thankful to have so many thoughtful people watching. It encourages me to keep making the show at higher levels each time. Please do come for a visit to Japan because there are a million adventures here for everybody, from pop culture to history to technology to -- the weird and unusual :) I'm always learning something new about this fascinating place. If you have show ideas, always love to hear them! Ping me on the Facebook or Google Plus pages! facebook.com/onlyinjapantv/ -John

Dude your too good for RUclips. Your videos should be on TV like Discovery Travel and Living. You never failed to amaze me and of course Japan is so beautiful.
What an amazingly quaint alleyway! Ramen really is one of the foods that I look forward to eating the most when I go to Japan. This really made me hungry, great video as always John! You must be by far the most professional J-Tuber there is.
Thanks! 8 minutes on 1 alley in Japan is actually a lot! I'll try to add a little more to the videos if I can. Thank YOU so much for supporting the show :) -John
But I really was full!! I just think I had better eat as much as I could because Sapporo has some amazing ramen. If you watch the Sapporo Snow Festival video, I ate a lot there too :) but I did also do a lot of walking. Ramen was like my gasoline in Sapporo. -John
You got that right! I didn't know that even miso ramen starts with a tonkotsu based soup. That's not limited to Fukuoka (Hakata) Ramen. Spicy Miso Negi Ramen is my favorite, it's simply ... AWESOME! -John
+ONLY in JAPAN I had no idea about the miso ramen starting with a tonkotsu based soup either. I guess that's why it all tastes great! My favourite is BUTA KAKUNI tonkostu ramen. Too delicious.
Thank You so much for the work you put into your videos....You videos are so positive and fun to watch...I always feel good after watching one of them!!
You're making me hungry! One of the best places I had ramen here in California was a ramen specialty place at the food court in Mitsuwa market or in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. No ramen pack can compare to the taste of fresh char siu pork, soy sauce ramen.. Damn.. now I'm hungrier. Looks like I need to check out more of Anthony Bourdain's Japan episodes. He's great!
But nothing will compare to having it traditionally and originally in Japan itself. EVEN if the place is called Little Tokyo or whatever, it isn't in actual Japan :P
The first of many ramen videos :) every area of Japan has their own speciality ramen and that means an endless amount of food and episodes on RAMEN!! Woo-hoo!! -John
Well done as always! Love Ramen! We have a couple of good Ramen shops in the Toronto, Canada and Vancouver, Canada area (Robson Street). I thought I had pretty good Chinese food until I travelled to Hong Kong. The food was 10x better. Here is hoping my Ramen pilgrimage to Japan will not disappoint. What is your single best Ramen experience?
+Reese Me From the looks of it,very likely a Hostess Cafe, guys looking to talk to girls about their troubles and stuff or just chill out and hang with them while they get served drinks.
Nicely done John, it so adorable to see you layered in the cold, but added to the authenticity of a hot bowl of ramen, always look forward for more! xo
I will get deeper into the ramen broth in a future episode but I think each shop does it differently. I believe most use pork bone and there is no fish taste to it. I don't think they use any "dashi" fish stock. One shop I visited in Tokyo used shrimp for their stock. THAT WAS FISHY ... or shrimpy ... (KEISUKE RAMEN in Takadanobaba) but normally if you don't want seafood topping, you'll get a bowl of pork based soup with noodles. -John
Gandalf TheStoned Usually, you won't taste fish base in your "miso Ramen" especially. Some Sapporo Ramen place add fish stock in their soup to taste lighter, but because most of them uses pig feet, seaweeds, and vegetable stocks, fish base really won't stand out. If you order other Hokkaido Ramen (especially from Kushiro, Hakodate, mostly by sea) with salt or soy source, you have higher chance to encounter fish base soup. :)
I've thought about it Mr. Right Nut :) but there are so many talented J-vloggers converting EVERYTHING imaginable. Thanks. OMG! I'm so hungry now! ;) Didn't get a chance to try ramen when I was there last November, but I'm definitely going to try it this year when I come back. The sweet corn & spicy pork looked awesome. Great video John. Keep up the great work. Your video's have been an inspiration & very helpful tool for things to do & see when I go to Japan.

Why is this stuff not on an educational T.V. channel? I miss the days when television was not only entertaining, but educational as well.
It is at NHK channel in japan, John was actually invited multiple times to do English shows for them.
because he's spreading rumors, like slurping is a sign to the chef that you like it. No it is not. He's wrong
Jictapus ! But slurping is okay, but not to hard of course. It even says so on Wikipedia.
Zesto I didn’t hear this from just him, but other people.
TV is outdated, Internet is the main entertainment of the future
John, I love watching your videos. The immersion in the traditional, non-touristy side of Japanese culture is great. Thanks for the experience.
I'm half Japanese and I used to live in Japanese for a portion of my childhood and every time I watch a video about Japan I miss it more and more. I can't wait to go back next Christmas

Great show as always, but it's too short John, we want to see more RAMEN. And that grilled pork ramen is my favorite.
Consider this an appetizer to more ramen episodes in this series! I learned a lot from this one so I can take that ramen knowledge to the next level. Eventually, ramen Jedi knight status -- where the noodles flow thought me. -John
+ONLY in JAPAN train hard John, until you can use the Force to slurp ramen awww yea!
'...but who cares about them, it's all about the RAMEN, man!'
I continue to love this episode more and more. Great job again, John.

I think it a great documentary u tube. I love the thing that posted by John Daub.

YESS ANOTHER VIDEO!!! I look forward to these videos, keep them coming.
Wow, 1600 yen is the equivalent of 13 euro, which translate in 15 to 16 US dollars, which is not very much. I pay a lot more here in Dublin, which is a shame because they have to readjust their recipes to Irish palate. For example, I was travelling to Paris three weeks ago and I went to several Asian restaurants, and I have to say that the quality of the food there was incredible. It was also really cheap, in between 7 and 8 euro max, although you need a local to take you to these hidden places.
Thanks to this video I've managed to taste the most delicious butter corn Ramen! Thanks John!
RIP Anthony :(. 4:20

I'm a Japanese but I've never heard such a thing here. If you do not slurp, nothing matters.
guntank363 Ty for clearing that up. The slurping actually annoys the crap out of me
