He was like that in the first season, he's still like that now. First few seasons he's in denial, thinking that he's "cultivating mass" when really he was just getting fat. He constantly worries about his looks (the duster) and always feels like he has to prove he is an "alpha male" by shouting, pretending not to be gay, etc... Mac's self-esteem issues are a constant throughout the show, and "ripped mac" not getting the acknowledgement for his improvement not only fits that theme (the gang justifiedly explains he's just doing it for attention and that he should be ignored like a child), it's also tragic comedy.
Frank also did this, if you notice when he starts off in season 2 his hair is clean cut and short, and as the show progresses and he spends more time with the gang and becomes crazier and crazier his hair grows ridiculously long.

He may have been, but the same thing applies to _Cheers_ and probably _Seinfeld_ too. Also, I've noticed that the first season or two of _The Office_ is kinda grimy and grainy looking, with harsh lighting, and some of the actors look blotchy, but with success came a bigger budget and HD, so it stopped looking like a gloomy paper company where you'd never-ever want to work, and became a "nice" place for the characters to be, totally dulling the show's edges. When a show works from the start, they should stick with what works!

Metabolism typically only vary by about 300 cals or so. Most people who figure they can eat anything they want and not gain, or that they can diet and excessive properly and still gain, are mistaken about how many calories they're actually taking in and burning.

My metabolism basically burns up fat like it's a damn flamethrower. If I actually wish to gain weight (preferably muscle, of course), then I'd need to eat what amounts to 6 smaller meals per day. It's not a good thing either. I'm incredibly skinny, and it doesn't help that I'm also quite small haha.
I think as a whole they've really shown some transformations on the show. Cricket went from a fairly good looking priest to a god damn street urchin and frank looks a lot crazier than he did in season 2.

My metabolism is the same way. I'm 34, but in order to gain the 50 pounds I did, I had to eat a TON! Not 5k but around 3-3.5k to supplement my jackrabbit metabolism. It kind of sucks, really.

I twisted my knee out of socket when I was 15 before summer break. I was thin cut and muscular from swim team all year. Also because of swim team I was also eating 5,000 calories a day. Then over the summer while recouping and not moving cause I couldn’t And, eating just as much without realizing it I gained 50lbs over that summer. It can really surprise you how easy it is to get fat.

You can take in a quick 1,200 calories from a weight gainer shake. You could do 10,000 calories a day if you applied yourself.

I think it was season 6 he was really fat. its really noticeable because season 6 ends on a very specific scene and season 7 picks up at the same exact scene (characters in same room, same clothes), except he'd lost like 50 pounds

He's talking specifically about The Big Bang Theory (he mentioned it in a couple other interviews), but he's also saying that having the characters get better looking is the norm for most shows. So yes, The Office is no exception.
