In the late 70's I went to just about every Scotland game at Hampden and this was certainly one of them. Happy memories of my teenage years and going to Hampden on the train.
@@oleggorky906 contrary to your way of thinking, a lot of us actually worked hard for what we were earning in those days!! In 1976 I was still at school so my Saturday job paid for my trip to Hampden. The ground was then and still is now, a dump. But the internationals were always good entertainment!! Happy memories indeed.
There was far too much hype in the build up to the 78 World Cup with the Scottish team being treated as if they'd already won the tournament before they even went to Argentina. They really underestimated their opponents Peru and Iran too. They thought getting through the group would be a doddle, they didn't prepare properly and got caught out.
Archie really did a number on Yorath there - no wonder Terry reacted, it was red-card material & would be today. Willie Pettigrew was a great striker. He just didn't last long enough!
Scotland was a very good team in 1976 /1982: 2 times at World Cup (3 with 1974) and many great players ( King Kenny, Gemmil, Jordan, Sounees, Mc Grain and other). My great respect for Scotland team from Italy
The problem was; Scottish stars such as Kenny Dalglish always underperformed at the World Cup. I can't believe a player as great as Dalglish couldn't shine at big stage like World cup; showing his best form only at club level.
Love watching these old games at Hampden. Especially the old square goal posts. Wish they would put them back Hampden looked brilliant with them,even better when a goal was scored into them.
@@CME1994 what I mean is for example the 1987 Scottish cup final St mirren v Dundee Utd. Ian Ferguson scored the last ever goal in the old style square wooden goals with the stantions in the back. That's what I mean.Go on utube and compare that game with ones after.It just looked far better when the ball hit the net...

The Scotland side of 1976 & 1977 was probably our best ever - Argentina came just 12 months too late.

I had privilege of meeting Joey Jones at a F.A.W. coaching course at Aberystwyth, what a Top Man.
Some great talent on show on both sides eg Yorath, Joey Jones, Curtis, Rioch, Gemill, Gray etc
Yeah Celtic Warrior, especially Alan Curtis one of the most gifted players ive seen, had a great season for us at Ninian Park mate.
I remember that game very well. We had a cracker of a thunderstorm that night, then we had that brilliant summer of 1976

Archie was game for his size, but terry yorath was a tough player who could look after himself.
Yorath would have torn Gemmill a new A hole.
Hampden looks empty, there was probably about 60,000, lol.
I never missed a home international match then. Look at the square goalposts from back then.
That tackle by Gemill on Yorath was a disgrace. And the penalty was a shocking decision
What did for Scotland in Argentina 78 was arrogance and complacency.
We (Wales) reached last 8 of the Euros that year.

Must have been the hardest kit to paint, Subbuteo's Wales kit mid/ late 70's. Coventry did the 'toothpaste stripes' too, awful.
I remember the Subbuteo version of that Wales kit was a poor imitation of the real thing.
I still have all my old hand-painted Subbuteo teams - I even did that Coventry strip 😜
The only player I don't remember is Wales goalie Brian Lloyd but us Welsh do remember Joe Jordan, for all the wrong reasons!
Jordan was always a dirty thug with his wildly swinging elbows. If he was playing today he'd get sent off in the first 20 minutes of every game.
