    By coincidence I find this on the day Leighton James passed away, 19 April 2024. As an England and Hereford fan, I saw James play at first hand a good number of times in 70s and 80s, both for Wales and especially clubs Burnley and Swansea. A great old fashioned winger, RIP.

    Hourray, thanks so much- what a happy memory, i was there aged 16 behind the goal where the winner was scored. This was the year after Wales were the sole British nation in the last 8 of the European championship/Euros. Later in 77 heartbreak for Wales, with Scotland's Joe Jordan's infamous handball in the Welsh penalty area for which the ref gave Scotland a penalty and Wales were ko'd from world cup qualifying.

      To be fair he was getting a settled side in 1975, but he suffered a fair few injuries to key players. Gerry Francis, Colin Bell, Kevin Beattie, Roy McFarland etc. Admittedly it was baffling how he ended Alan Ball’s career prematurely and, also, his treatment of Alan Hudson who looked truly World Class in 1975

    Never understood the Revie years tbh. When Liverpool had set template and were clearly the best team, he never made the effort to pick players that knew each other inside out and played international style at club level. At the time Callaghan, Kennedy, McDermott, Case, Keegan et al could have been the core of a dominant England. Supplement with Francis, Brooking band someone to play the Tosh role.

    A lot of men who were kids in this era, criticize these 70's matches. I know blokes 50+ years old who slag these old footy matches, because they want to be ''current'' and trendy. Bit like slagging off abba, when most uk kids in he 70's liked them. Fair to say conditions have improved, but its shit watching matches with hardly any british players in them. Also on the continent, Holland v Belgium, looks more like Ivory Coast v Cameroon. Give me the days of Rep, Haan, Krol, Rensenbrink, Cruyff, Van der elst, gerets, Renquin, Scifo, ceulemans, Van den bergh.....any time.!

    A prime example of the destruction Don Revie caused to English football, who then disappeared t the Emirates. He should have been stuck into the Tower Of London for what he did to English football. I hope enjoys his life in purgatory.

  • @infrasleep
    @infrasleep 2 года назад +5

    Wasn't England's next game the 2-1 Wembley defeat to Scotland after which Revie did a runner ? You can tell here that Revie had lost the England squad ;constant pointless changes-often a player who had a blinder being dropped and never used again (Alan Hudson v W Germany anyone ?!) or a winning ,exciting side (England's 1975 5-1 winners v Scotland) being disbanded immediately. Revie was a club manager,Totally the wrong choice for England. We expected to fail back then.

    If Peter Shilton had a weakness, it was definitely penalties. Have seen a number of old England matches recently, and apart from the friendly v West Germany in 1985 in which he saved a penalty, on the other occasions, Shilton has just flopped to his side, seemingly making no attempt to get to the ball.

      Even the matches England do beat Wales, their fans default to ''small country syndrome''. Euro 2016 being a prime example. Used to support all the home countries, but for Wales, i now have a go fk yourselves kind of outlook. Not even ''banter'' from them, just pure hatred. Pathetic really. Maybe England should use that small country syndrome excuse - being smaller than the usual world cup winners Brazil, Germany, France and Italy.
