The golden years of Polish football. Dramatic, tough match. Great recording quality - thank you very much. Greetings to all Polish and English fans of football and this match.
First time I've watched this match since I was a kid. Surprised how much I could remember. My late father was shaking his head in disbelief as chance after chance slipped by. I think one of the papers the next morning spoke highly of Channon who had a great game, tried so hard. Thanks for sharing. Great to time travel!
Stayed up in the middle of the night in Port Dickson, Malaysia. Was glued to the family short-wave radio the whole game. With a long copper wire, reception was good. 15 yrs old then, Form 3 LCE (O' Levels) exams might be on at that time of the year, but nevermind, could not miss this critical match. Was sad mother England didn't make it to the WC, but Poland did proud in WM74. Thanks for posting the video.
Sounds so nostalgic, even as a welshman i was routing for England, It was such a tense night, and on another night England might have put 4 past them....I was 13. I went to ninian pk and i think wales beat Poland 2-0... Trevor Hockey (sheff utd scored)... watched the England game on TV with my dad and my uncle, both dead now RIP X......Well done Poland, they had a great world cup.
Najwazniejszy mecz naszej reprezentacji. Mialem wtedy 12 lat i chyba zadnego meczu tak nie przezywalem. Na MS w RFN bylismy absolutna rewelacja, w 82r tez zajelismy trzecie miejsce ale bez tego entuzjazmu jak w 74r. Zloty gol Jana Domarskiego to opowiesc o pilce ktora " przyszla, naszla, zeszla i weszla....
Love to see the possession and shots of goal stats for this game. Remember it well, had to wait till 1981 to see England qualify for a WC. Anyway Poland were superb in 1974, pity they didn't play Holland, that could have been some match.
The Poles "stumbled" over West Germany on the Frankfurt-on-Mein Waldstadion pitch turned into a swamp by the downpour lasting several hours, so it was the Germans who played and beat the Dutch. Alas!
@Colin Poland played soon against Holland during Euro '76 qualification. They were together in one group with Italy and Finland. Poland won the first match away against Cruyff's Netherlands 4:1 but lost in Poland 3:0. Above of all Netherlands qualified to the Euro '76 in Yugoslavia. Best regards from Poland. In Poland we call game against England on Wembley '73 "winning draw". It is a legendary game in the history of Polish football.
Thanks for posting this legendary match! Superb quality, this is a real treat. Even after almost half a century since it was played, this game is well remembered in Poland. Probably the most important match in the history of polish football, as at the following WM 1974 Poland took the third place, and that happened only twice at that level so far, again in 1982. That goal by Domarski must have given you, the English, nightmares for a long time. 🙂Greetings! 💙

Great video! So good to see all the action in context of the whole match too. I’m posting this message exactly 50 years to the very day of watching this infamous match live as a 10 year old. As Chas and Dave sang...’When the Poles knock England out the cup. Gertcha!’
I'm also present here exactly 50 years after the game was played ,October 17, 2023, almost to the very minute. ⚽Yesterday evening. a polish tv channel, TVP Sport, rebroadcast the full game again. Jan Domarski and Andrzej Strejlau [ assistant to coach K. Górski at the WM 1974 and later ] were invited to the studio; there were also some remarks made by Jan Tomaszewski and Grzegorz Lato about the game, but they weren't present in the studio in the flesh.⚽Infamous match, as you put it ,in England, but quite the opposite in Poland, as you can see.⚽It's been half of the century, but I think that it's worthwhile showing this to polish youngsters - some of them might have never witnessed that night at Wembley Stadium before.⚽And especially now, when polish football seems to be hitting rock bottom - it's dubious if Polish National Team will qualify to play in Euro 2024.⚽😐

This was a Wednesday night. Aged 13 I was in my dads blue escort with my mum driving from York to Manchester airport on route to Spain so listened to it all on the cars crackly AM radio. When Poland scored I asked my dad to turn it off only to ask him to turn it back on when I assumed the 90 minute's were up. I expected England 3 Poland 1. I've never been the same since lol.
No shame in losing to Poland then - they were the best team in the world along with Holland in 1974. It was only the semi-final played in atrocious conditions against West Germany that meant Poland couldn't play their style of football.
Polands style of football was very direct in no way any possession football. They benefitted from those conditions much more than the more technical W-German team. And in no way was Poland better than W-Germany in 1974.
@@peterhammer4644 The West German's went to Warsaw in 71 or 72 on their way to becoming European Champions and beat em 1 - 3 also knocking England 🇬🇧 out 1 - 3 in the Q F - the German's were at their very peak in 72 - the Dutch were very very lucky to reachable the W C ask Any Belgium 🇧🇪 football supporters about at the time - so yeah Germany were likely to win the WC in 74 but Poland The Netherlands or the German's would not have fancied playing England in 74 I can assure you - it's all hypothesis - but none of the above mentioned would have bothered Sir Alf .

@@jamescorlett5272 Football has never been fair. Only ice hockey is more objective ;) And volleyball is at all ;)) For example, according to Polish player Zibi Boniek in 1982 at Mundial in Spain it Brazil with Falcao was the best team of the world. But medals were won by Italians with Rossi, Germany with Rummenigge, Poles with Boniek and Grzegorz Lato (Lato was still brilliant despite 33 years on the back of his neck), and the French with Platini & Tigana. In 1974 the Poles with Lato, Deyna & Gadocha were the best team, but God made a cloudburst in Frankfurt ;) Football will never be fair and this is its charm...
Next to Tomaszewski, Lato was among the most decisive players in this game on the Polish side. Created 3 chances of goal in the 2nd half. Plus stole the ball from Hunter and assisted Domarski.
Most of English fans avoid facing the truth. Overall, Poland was better than England at that time. Poland beat England 2-0 at home and needed a draw at Wembley to go to the 74' World Cup. England dominated this game but it was not a fortune for Poland to qualify to the tournament in Germany. Poland reached a semi-final in 1974 Word Cup beating top teams in the world including Italy, Argentina and Brazil.
Not only that. Lato created 2 solid goal chances in the 2nd half (besides taking the ball from Hunter, dribbling and assisting Domarski). McFarland had to foul him to avoid a 1 v 1 with Shilton. Nowadays, McFarland would've been red-carded and sent off.
I was ten years old when I was allowed to stay up and watch this and to this day I would say it was the most exciting world cup match, albeit qualifying rounds, that I have ever seen. Although it was the wrong result it was edge of the seat stuff from start to finish. It was games like this that I compare to the games today and why I struggle to watch nowadays as they just don't hold my attention and bore me senseless.
1. 27 Sniffer Clarke could not believe his blast didn't bust the net - What a save from the " Clown " . Perhaps a change of studs would have been the best substitution Sir Alf should have made .
I was there! 10 years old. Yes, it was incredibly one-sided, yes, we should have won comfortably, but the Polish goalkeeper (I'm not going to attempt to type his name) had the game of his life, Brian Clough was wrong when he called the guy a clown and the Poles went on to claim third place in the 1974 tournament, with Lato winning the Golden Boot.
I'm Polish and in my opinion Clough's statement is almost universally misunderstood/taken out of context. Look at Tomaszewski's antics in this match, look how he acts right at the beginning after his hand injury, look at his risky and mistimed jumps where he misses the ball completely. Yes, he had some amazing saves and a shitload of luck, but he did actually act a lot like a clown, and when someone on British TV called Clough out for this comment, he said something like "Well, would you want to have him on your team every day?" I think at this point Clough was actually quite right. However, much like the entire Polish team, Tomaszewski was a different player in 1974. He was a rock in every WC match, saved two penalties, and didn't make any serious error. And Poland itself played with much more confidence, never being as defensive as in this qualifier against England. By the way, nowadays Tomaszewski is back to being a clown, an awfully dumb one. 😅
My first really huge football disappointment as an 8 year old child watching it on live tv..It felt like the end of the world.Still resonates with me years later how much of a hollow feeling inside I had when the match ended and the realization that we had failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.
thanks very much duckjive1 for posting. I was 11 at the time and have always remembered just loose bits and pieces, the match becoming sort of a legend to me. I think it was the only time I have ever seen my dad lose his temper. Now watching for the first time since then. Love football of that time, love the way the lawn was cut, love even the dimmed edges of the pitch, love that players were playing football and not marketing themselves constantly. Perhaps it is all about the wish to be 11 again,, and to see my dad again.
Like many young England fans (I was 13 and just got into liking football) I was extremely disappointed that we didn't qualify. But take nothing away from Poland, they had a good team and proof of this was in finishing third in the World Cup. I have great respect for the Poles and I'm not just talking football here. Tak, ogromny szacunek.
@@timrobinson100 Being English I am of course an England supporter but I like to give credit where it's due. We simply hadn't done enough to qualify and although we dominated this particular game, the reality was that over both ties against the Poles we came off second best. And had we qualified ahead of Poland there is no guarantee that we'd have fared any better than them at the World Cup in '74, not with our usual habit of underperforming at said tournament. I think a little bit of humility is what's needed here.
Back in the old days when international football *really was* international football! I know you still get moments and great player performances, but I stand by that IF golden years were between World Cups 1958-1986. Best formats, locations, greatest players, atmosphere etc. Even in the qualifiers like this.
I agree mate but would extend the period slightly to include the likes of van Basten and Gullit, R. Baggio, Matthaus, etc. in the decent tournaments of 1988 and 1990. The USA hosting the World Cup in 1994 was a bad decision that resulted in a poor tournament and there have been plenty more since. Qualifying games now are just a formality and are so tedious to watch.
@@gooner73clark88 Maybe the swansong was France '98 WC (my word, *what* a world cup that was, really!). I really do think FIFA World Cup 1998 was the closest WC it every came to providing the neutral audience with such games and entertainment since the golden age of IF which I mentioned. Italia 90 and USA 94 had moments but alas, both scarcely remembered worldwide until you were an Englishmen (90) or Swede (94). In my view, anyway.
Since 1986 the World Cups have been average (yes '98 was an exception) or poor. The poorest world cup was 1990. '94 was ok - the Bulgarians spiced it up. It's homogenised and globalised now. You could be watching a premiership match.
The top players around in the last two decades, don't deliver at World Cups, the way the likes of Pelé, Charlton, Eusébio, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Maradona, did.
thank you for putting it up and in this quality. I was 11 when it was played. England dominated the game but Poland eventually qualified. What was an English tragedy was at the same time just the start of a golden period in Poland's footballing history, which might not have started without this draw. It's a strange magic of soccer and its logic.
I think it should have been England's second Golden Age let's get things right We smashed em - in all but the result , Clarke's face after Blasting the ball at the strangely lucky goalie With 10 minutes to go - says it All .. England would have been a massive threat IF with one or two player changes we were ever to see the Golden Spires of Berlin .
Martin Peters was the only 1966 World Cup winner left when in the line up that faced Poland in the crucial World Cup qualifier at Wembley on 17 October 1973. Peters in fact captained the England in a match that the home team must win to secure qualification for the 1974 World Cup finals in Munich. As the Poles they just needed a draw and that would be sufficient. Yes for every an English fan that evening it was painful as it was a national disaster and calsmity. For the first time since 1950,England won't be among the sixteen finalists in Munich. That draw with Poland in fact didn't lead to the instant dismissal of Sir Alf Ramsey as England's supremo but the writing was on the wall.Sir Alf was atill in charge for England's next two friendly internationals with Italy and Portugal.
1:27:00 Incredible save from Tomaszewski. Poland were an improving team and were even better by the time the 1974 World Cup came around. I think England would have put up a decent showing if they'd qualified, maybe got to the second round but they weren't on the same level as West Germany and the Netherlands.
@@Ruda-n4h That squad was picked by Sir Alf not uncle Joe , had this complete an utter not to mention dubious result gone the way it should ( Shilton had Jack to do all night ) I believe England could have won the 74 WC - BLIMEY even the Jocks came home undefeated .
@@andrewcorlett4795 But they didn't have the class to score against or beat the best teams (read the official FIFA Technical Study on the finals and see what they say about Scotland) and neither did this England team - they didn't have the wit to create many clear chances here. If England had qualified Ramsay would have kept the same team and England might have suffered the same fate as Italy did by going out in the first round.
Quote from a football website: "As I discussed in my previous article, England and Poland both had enormously bad luck in being drawn together in qualification for the 1974 World Cup. The only teams ranked higher than them by the ELO ratings were World Cup holders Brazil and 1972 European Champions West Germany. As neither of those two had to qualify for the 1974 World Cup, this meant that the two strongest European teams, England and Poland, ended up in the same group along with Wales" . = says a lot about Seeding arrangements in those days. Up there with FIFA Putting England, Brazil in the same WC Qualifying group in 1970

@Stalin I think if you're honest although England had all the pressure they hardly created any clear cut chances - it was all scrambles in front of the penalty area and long range shots. There was no one with the wit to slow down the mad goal rush and get behind the Poles. Allan Clarke showed how an England player should take a penalty though.
It wasn't Channn's hand. Crazy game, I was on the floor pounding it when we got that goal... And then, if not for the McFarland's professional foul... Yeah, we all have different 'looks' at that ;))
Nice to see that players stood up in duels and not aiming for an Oscar every time ^^ And number 5 in Poland apologizing after that tackle with a classic bow, haha @ 20:48 ! But playing back to the goalie, who was allowed to pick it up, was a horrible rule, glad they took that away ^
Tomaszweski broke 5 bones in his hand in the first minutes. He went on to be the best goal keeper at the 74 World Cup. England’s arrogance was a main contributor to their failure to reach the finals. They really did think of Poland as a mid level European team. They were wrong as Poland finished third at the World Cup behind The Netherlands and West Germany.

Thanks for the match. The first time I see in color ;) According to the current rules, Poland would finish the game with probably 10 players and England in 8.
What made this game even more dramatic was that, after so many brilliant saves by Tomaszewski, England had two more chances in the final minute: 1:38:02 the header by Kevin Hector, cleared off the goal line by Szymanowski, and the shot by Channon in 1:38:52, cleared off the goal line by Bulzacki. Tomaszewski said it better - it was 4-Musketeers, one-for-all and all-for-one game.
Only time I ever cried after a match ,I had scrimped and saved to go to wW M 74 to see England, but this game gave Poland the self belief to be a great team,I saw them 4 times and they were one of the best teams there.
1:28:40 - Roy McFarland grabbing Polish striker Grzegorz Lato by the jersey to stop him from scoring the winning goal. Lato was one of the best players in history of Polish football so I doubt he would have missed that opportunity. If there was ever the LOWEST point in the history of English national team - that would be on of the leading candidates for that title ;-) That said - congratulations on beating Germany - and good luck for the rest of Euro 2020 games! PS. Funny but whenever there are highlights of that game that McFarland foul is very rarely included ;-)

England missed Bobby Charlton so much. A World Class midfielder. England were never the same after he retired in 1970. His midfield craft, intelligence and vision were never adequately replaced.
And the same can be said for Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks. Moore was dropped for this game. His form and ability waned badly as he approached the end of his career. While Banks's career was ended prematurely 12 months earlier in a car accident. But Banks, Moore & Charlton were the world-class heart of the 66-70 team

I was 9 when this was played and will remember it until my dying day. England murdered them. Chivers was never the same after this game. Obviously never played for England again but wasnt the same for Tottenham either. So many England players career were basically finished by this match even though they all bar Chivers played on
The away game in Poland was the first nail in the coffin - Bobby Moore had a nightmare, Alan Ball got sent-off, England lost 2-0 and were up against it coming into this game.
I was only thirteen when this very crucial 1974 World Cup qualifier between England and Poland was played at Wembley on 17 October 1973. And like many Malaysians then were very shocked when Poland held England to a 1-1 draw that sent the 1966 World Cup champions out of the 1974 World Cup finals in Munich for the first time since 1950. Yes,England had Poland on the defensive throughout the match and mind you the home team dominated the proceedings being awarded 26 corner kicks to Poland's only two.Why and how come England could only score one and that too from a penalty converted by Allan Clarke. That equalising goal came just minutes after Jan Domarski had scored for the visitors. After that it was the case of "yet so near, yet so far" Yes England were simply unlucky. It wasn't their day as so many chances went abegging. As if Chivers,Channon,Clarke,Peters and Bell all left their shooting boots at home.
Football is weird. Not objective. It's easier to make a sensation in football than in handball, hockey or volleyball. The Faroese team with a goalkeeper in a cap with an antenna, counterattacks and defeats Austria :)) And the Poles at Wembley play ugly, terrible, torn football. Although effective ;) But a year later, it is the Poles who receive a special award for the most offensive and spectacular football during the world championship in Germany in 1974. Grzegorz Lato becomes the top scorer of the World Cup and Andrzej Szarmach is the vice-king of shooters next to the Dutchman Neeskens. By the way, Szarmach finally becomes the deputy of the legendary Włodzimierz Lubański in the Polish national team after Lubański's terrible injury in the first match against England in Poland. Jan Domarski was first Lubański's substitute and then Szarmach's substitute in the Polish team. According to Auxerre's coach, the famous Guy Roux, forward Andrzej Szarmach is one of the 10 most brilliant scorers in the history of football. Szarmach was nicknamed ''Devil'' because he was not afraid to put his head where others were afraid to stick his leg :)
@@krzysztofizdebski1223 Yes Sir Alf Ramsey underestimated Poland who went on to finish third in the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. Poland were on Pole position and poised to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals after beating England 2-0 and Wales 3-0 both at home. All they needed was just a point when England hosted them in the deciding match at Wembley on 17 October 1973.For England they must win but for Poland a draw would be suffice.
This match is still etched in my memory as a 14 year old watching it live on ITV, I don`t often disagree with Clough (he was one of my hero`s), but his assessment of the polish goalie was wrong (he wasn`t a clown), but everything went right for him on night (especially the two great saves from Colin Bell),........ what was noticable was the greasy wet pitch, the england players poor footing was noticable (our players struggled to play there normal game) and our possession was very high compared to the Poles, basically we threw the kitchen sink at them with our who`s who of 1st division forwards/strikers, but it wasn`t to be - can anyone remember who was on the England subs bench that night?
@@duckjive1 Unlucky great Moore at the end of his career. Polish Wikipedia: '' (..) Moore significantly contributed to the defeat of the English in Chorzów (0: 2). He took part in the first goal (in some studies he is considered an own goal scorer), the second Włodzimierz Lubański scored after a lonely rally - he had just taken the ball from Moore. (..) ''. Someone aptly noticed that an identical goal for the Polish national team was scored by Robert Lewandowski in the match Poland - Denmark. Also a dash from behind the back and taking the ball from the defender and a shot from the post into the short corner. And down this is an analysis of Lubański's game against England. Lubański's style of play was very similar to that of Lewandowski. The head of the Polish information bank, Jacek Gmoch, told Lubanski that Bobby Moore loses control of the events on the pitch for a fraction of a second after receiving the ball. Lubański took advantage of it. It was his 44th goal in the Polish national team. The match ended with a terrible injury. For 3 years, Lubański did not play in the national team. When he was removed from the pitch, in his place came ... Jan Domarski, the later scorer for Wembley. Domarski's goal is recognized in world statistics as one of the 50 most important goals in the history of football. Peter Shilton still sends Domarski Christmas cards with greetings :) But from what I've read, Lubański doesn't blame McFarland. It was more of an unfortunate accident than some terrible foul by the English defender. Grzegorz Lato at Wembley also was stopped by McFarland by simply grabbing him like a dancer at a disco :)) Today McFarland would receive a red card. Which does not change the fact that such soft stopping is a million times less dangerous than a foul in the legs from behind. This was a tremendous England performance against a top class team - 3rd in the world cup in the following year. I wish Francis Lee had played. He knew most of the Polish players' games from City matches against Gornik. He said he'd hoped for the call and was sure he could have done the job. But there was no call.
Great quality! Thanx for upload... I think it was the most important game in the history of polish football. Btw... my son was born on Oct.17th. It makes this day REALLY special to me :-)
Amazing to think I could probably recognise the names of several Poles at that time, they were that good. Kaz Deyna, Gregory’s Lato, Domarski and Poland’s equivalent of Gordon McQueen, Jerzy Gorgon.
Yes of those England's XI in that 1974 World Cup qualifier with Poland at Wembley on 17 October 1973 some 48 years ago,Paul Madeley,Emlyn Hughes,Martin Peters and Norman Hunter have passed on.
Tomaszewski the man who was called a clown by Brian Clough soon proved him wrong. Martin Chivers last game for England it seems he was never forgiven for missing that open goal.
These matches are great to rewatch, but I;d love to see some of the half time or after match interviews with pundits and managers. There are some great WC clips from the 70s on YT.
@@duckjive1 Dunno if it would work but one trick uploaders have used is to very slightly increase the speed of the video. That's been done quite successfully. It's not ideal but better than nothing.
Its should be said again what Great support we got that night from folks trying to watch at the same time . Compared with the late Italy game we're the crowd was every much as glued on the match . Back in 73 it was a case of England 🇬🇧 Expects , 2021 England hoped , 2022 Anybody ? .
I think with 2022 it was a case that everyone only hoped until the final and then it became expectation in the final. Personally I think Gareth Southgate's statement was spot on: "England is Peter Pan in reverse, when you believe in England, they die".
And for the whole game, nobody dived, nobody tried to cheat. Respect. It's so sad that current football relies so much on trying to cheat somebody (by getting a penalty or good opportunity or making him getting a red card etc.)
This was the illfated 1973 World Cup qualifier between 1966 World Cup champions England and the 1972 Olympic champions Poland that took place at Wembley on 17 October 1973. Whereas Poland needed a draw to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals, the home team must beat the visitors to make the finals in Munich. As such the match would decide the fate of England. Just several months back Poland had shocked England 2-0 at Katowice culminating in the sending off of midfielder Alan Ball in the 78th minute. England with home ground advantage and thoussnds of fans rooting for them dominated the proceedings throughout but just were unable to apply the finishing touches.Big burly Martin Chivers was the main culprit and so were Mick Channon,Colin Bell and Allan Clarke. It was not to be England's night as they missed a lot of chances and Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski dubbed the "Clown" by Brian Clough had Lady Luck on his side. In the end,the Poles rode on Jans Domarski goal to see them through although Allan Clarke equalised with a penalty.

yes, i was rooting for Holland, but liked Poland a lot too.

Next to Tomaszewski, Lato was among the most decisive players in this game on the Polish side. Created 3 chances of goal in the 2nd half. Plus stole the ball from Hunter and assisted Domarski.
"Should have been red!"
Not for another 17 years.
This match, told to my brother and I through my Dad’s account, lit a fire that made me play 40 years of amazing football.
Lato was outstanding in the World Cup as well.

The Polish goalkeeper name is Jan Tomaszewski.
He is still active in commenting football matches in Polish media.
Exactly mate, Poland were no mugs. England played a World side Lato at the time was world class.
Jan ''Tomek'' Tomaszewski is controversial to this day, but in 1974 in Germany he saved two penalty kicks. All that were shot at him.
The only clown that night was the English keeper Shilton

Like many young England fans (I was 13 and just got into liking football) I was extremely disappointed that we didn't qualify.

I think England would have put up a decent showing if they'd qualified, maybe got to the second round but they weren't on the same level as West Germany and the Netherlands.
la verdad que nadie estaba en el mismo nivel que ellos!
Yeah mate Sniffer Clarke just could not believe it - mind you What a Save.
The team under Joe Mercer would have put on a decent show and maybe have got to the 3/4 place play off - maybe.
Up there with FIFA Putting England, Brazil in the same WC Qualifying group in 1970
Duckjive,
Thanks for supplying this famous game-one of the seminal moments of English football. England full of running but it has to be said Poland quite resolute in defence. Good performances by Hunter and Bell for England and Gorgon for Poland. Compliments on your really unique England coverage!
Roy Mcfarland was an excellent defender who should have been at the centre of the English defence with Todd until the end of the 1970s but...that was a naughty tackle on Lato at the end..

According to the current rules, Poland would finish the game with probably 10 players and England in 8.
1:39:12 Check how Gadocha (forward-winger) goes to the very last defensive line to prevent the crossing -after minute 90.
Ouch, I remember that game I was 10. One of many meltdowns I experienced as a child.

I'm not a nostalgic fella, but McFarland's 82nd minute "professional foul" brought the 70's back really quick. Imagine doing that now? Hilarious.

1:28:40 - Roy McFarland grabbing Polish striker Grzegorz Lato by the jersey to stop him from scoring the winning goal. Lato was one of the best players in history of Polish football so I doubt he would have missed that opportunity. If there was ever the LOWEST point in the history of English national team - that would be on of the leading candidates for that title ;-)
That said - congratulations on beating Germany - and good luck for the rest of Euro 2020 games!

After that it was the case of "yet so near, yet so far"
Yes England were simply unlucky.
