England needed a win whereas Poland the 1972 Olympic champions just a draw would be suffice. Five months earlier at Katowice,England had suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to the Poles. But this time around with home ground advantage the English fans had expected the home team to walk over the visitors. Moreover last month on 26 September in a friendly at the same venue England had crushed Austria 7-0. The Poles knew that it would not be easy playing England at Wembley and they came with intentions hoping for a draw. Yes that night England attacked relentlessly and ruthlessly non stop for the duration of the match. The only problem. The England frontline lacked finishing power. The ball would not go in despite the many chances.Allan Clarke,Martin Chivers,Colin Bell and Mick Channon did have chances presented to them. But they just could not apply the finishing touches. It was either the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszeski or the goal post that stood in England's way.And the Poles too had Lady Luck to thank them. For all their dominance England despite equalising with an Allan Clarke penalty just could not score another to qualify for the Munich finals. One of the blackest days in English football but then the home team had no one but only themselves to blame.Chances were a plenty but forwards especially the culprit Martin Chivers left their scoring boots at home. That draw sealed Sir Alf Ramsey's fate as England's supremo. He would continue to take charge but too for two England friendlies with Italy and Portugal in April the following year.

Poland were dead lucky in this game. England had 40 odd attempts on goal 2 goals disallowed hit woodwork..unbelievable. The Dice of Fate have been thrown and we went 30odd years of bad luck and poor refereeing decisions .
Garry Wood Every team gets a game like that ! I remember we 🇮🇪 drew 0-0 with Liechtenstein with similar stats ! Had we won we’d have gotten to Euro 96 !
And from my point of view, as I remember the game, Belgian ref was all for England. It is just point of view and the direction of your heart. Look at Poland's team now. No heart in the game. Does this make you happy? I don't care how good England is now. But England is good today. In any case, the team plays, not individual players.
For all their faults this England team contained some of the most talented players of the decade: Bell, Channon, Chivers, Clark, Currie, Hughes, Hunter, Madeley were all outstanding footballers: yet somehow a team with less "spectacular" individuals (Hurst, Mullery, Peters, Beardsley, etc) achieved far more in 1966, 1968, 1990 and 1996.

Sir Alf Ramsey should have recalled Geoff Hurst and Francis Lee for this crucial World Cup tie with Poland at Wembley on 17 October 1973. But he did not and paid the price. The rather clumsy Martin Chivers was ineffective and had Hurst and Lee being available they could have tucked away those chances. The front line of Channon,Chivers and Clarke misfired and missed so many chances which could have sealed an easy win for England. The Poles were hardly in the game at all except for the goal by Jan Domarski. Why and how did England missed all those chances? And England forced no less than twenty six corners and had dominated the proceedings for the entire match. The misfiring Martin Chivers could have made way for Kevin Hector much earlier but one wonders why Sir Alf had not done it much earlier.Chivers as we all know had played his last game for England and was not recalled for England's next friendly with Italy at Wembley in November.Norman Hunter made a blunder of it all as he miskicked and allowed Gregorzt Lato to race through allowing Dormarski to deliver the killer goal.Clarke equalised at 1-1 five minutes later but it was too little too late.
I really respect English people. Probably they are most intelligent and powerful nation in whole history. Shakespeare, the Beatles, FC Liverpool, Churchill, Newton, Tony Blair, John Cleese... Other people may smell their panties. But... Poles were unexpectedly better this evening.
Jack Brodnicki Well, that's debatable if Jack the Ripper was English.. Yes, most of the suspects were English, but two weren't: one was an American stage actor living in London, who committed suicide, and the killings strangely stopped shortly afterwards, another suspect was an Eastern European emigré. But it's doubtful we'll ever know for sure.
Tomaszewski... Yeah, he was quite amazing, but these highlights are such a bullshit! Watch the whole thing, where is Lato's break through and McFarland's.. what today would be an 'automatic' red... And another one-one-one? The WHOLE team played really well.
the dirty carthorse, McFarland, wrecked Poland's star player in the earlier fixture in Poland....which Poland won 2-0 ….damaged his cruciate ligaments and he was never the same player again.
Let's face it, when the iron curtain came down Eastern European football just became awful. Poland had an amazing generation of players there. Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, USSR would emerge as other great teams. But their football hasn't been what it was for 30 years now and it's clear why.
Shilton got away with that goal. I was only 8 years old watching this game with my Dad and older brother but I don't recall him being especially blamed. The man who was blamed was Hunter for treading on the ball as he tried to trap it and let the Polish player get away from him. Hughes and McFarland did their best to cover but the speed and decisiveness of the Polish counter and the clinical finish from Domarski were excellent. Shilton should have done better, and he was slow to set himself for the shot. He rises up with a little jump just before Domarsky shoots. Domarski didn't give the ball a first touch but delivered a quick first time snapshot. Shilton was clearly expecting the Pole to give it a first touch before shooting and was caught unawares and coudn't get down to the ball. England's attacks looked frenetic and frenzied. What they really needed to was less frenzy and more control and incisive play. Basically they lacked quality. Although this was a very strong Poland side that went on to finish 3rd in the World cup.
. Shilton did seem to get away with being blamed throughout his England career whilst his counterpart, Clemence, was castigated for his errors (Scotland, Norway and Hungary spring to mind). However Clemence was not directly responsible for England failing to progress at any world cup. But Shilton was on 3 separate occasions. Poland in 73. Argentina in 86 where he was out jumped by Maradona. And West Germany in 90 when he should have dealt with the free kick. Terrific goalkeeper. But error prone on the big occasion.
This match reminds me of Italy v. Sweden (0-0) from November 2017. It was almost the same, Italy had tons of chances but didn't score while Sweden just defended with 11 players. But in the end the Italians failed to qualify for the World Cup because of bad luck and strange referee decisions like England in this 1973 qualifier.
Italy have won and done well in many tournaments and yet they have also had at least their share of bad luck and bad ref decisions, the most infamous v South Korea.
Schnipp08 i personally think Italy v Sweden, Italy had a set of very ordinary players, and a very poor manager. Deservedly failed to qualify for WC 2018. Perhaps Mancini can improve the National side.

this kind of match in Poland we called "defence of Częstochowa" [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jasna_G%C3%B3ra]
Because we have only hope before win :)
cheers from Poland
:D
maciek697788 , he had a mare into in Poland thats why !
Lovely stuff !
We beat Austria 7-0 a few weeks before and Ramsey famously quoted we played BETTER against Poland!!
Went to this game, can't remember much about it as i was chatting my mates girlfriend up....
El portero polaco extrordinario
Pero por arriba despejando un desastre: las falló todas. Tal vez porque jugó casi todo el partido con un dedo roto, no lo sé
Looking back on it England didn't have the wit to create many clear cut chances.
Garry wood always is other team that is lucky,or may be England dont know how to score.
Mullery only played in the 1970 World Cup
Good team. terrible tactics. Get it out wide and pump in a long cross over and over and over again.
1968?
CAUSED BY MEDIA PRESSURE
Good team, poor management.
Why was the England goal disallowed?
Clark touched the ball with his hand.
THE PROBLEM WITH ENGLAND'S FORWARDS WAS THAT THEY TEND TO AIM THEIR SHOTS DIRECT AT THE POLISH GOALKEEPER RATHER THAN PLACED THEM BEYOND.
How was that shot at 5:55 aimed at the keeper? Ridiculous save.
Good luck english, we will meet in next year in the euro qualifiers
A gdzie jest ten moment gdzie Lato wychodzi sam na sam i Anglik łapie go za koszulkę??????:)))))
oni tego nigdy nie pokazuja. czerwona kartka.
Wlasnie !!!!!!!!!!
Cholera
A koncówka pierwszej połowy, kiedy Deyna zakłada siatkę trzem Anglikom pod rząd? A przy stanie 0-1, Deyna znowu kiwa dwóch Anglików, podaje kanałem do Laty, ten wychodzi sam na sam z Shiltonem i psuje? Tak naprawdę, to Anglicy mieli jakieś 4 sytuacje, a Polska 3.
No i pamiętajmy, że Angole bramke zdobyli z karnego z dupy.
The Poles were a tough outfit to crack on that night.
Lucky as hell.
@@rajkobjelica4905
It's a tactic, you have to be able to attack and defend. Poles were better tactically.
What was wrong with England's disaollowed goal at 10:50??
nothing
Hand ball by Clarke
Hand ball. What was wrong with the foul on Lato?
Two thoughts: Tony Currie was a great player and he won far too few England caps; why did Norman Hunter not just belt that ball into the stands?
My father shook the television so much the glass bulbs in the back blew up/ for those of you who don't know what I'm on about Google it you won't believe it but it's true / you could make your own televisions in them days
I remember reading that a yank journalist wrote that the atmosphere that dark night was " like being at the Nuremberg rally back in das 30 ts " .
Why was Channons "Goal" disallowed?
attacker-couldn't work out who-was all over the defender before the ball was laid back to Channon
It was given for handball against Chivers. Bullshit decision
It was a handball by Sniffer Clarke and it was the right decision
Hand ball by Alan Clarke, with out doubt the right call.
Pat Ridge you clearly don’t have a clue about football rules was given for that but ref after admitted it was wrong call
You forgot that McFarland saved England from defeat by fouling Lato. 😂
Not Hurst. He lived his life on the back of 2 weeks in 66
England no wingers since 66 people like summerbee armstrong and hinton frozen out
Aisling Dalton , travesty 3 great players!
I prefer England 3 Poland 0 1986 Lineker hat-trick 🤣
How about Poland 2 England 0 in 1973. Lubański's first goal.;-)
@@mikoajdariuszmackowiak2141 Doesn’t compare to a hat-trick at an actual World Cup :)
@@Me-ll4ig I don't compare it.
I really respect English people. Probably they are most intelligent and powerful nation in whole history. Shakespeare, the Beatles, FC Liverpool, Churchill, Newton, Tony Blair, John Cleese... Other people may smell their panties. But... Poles were unexpectedly better this evening.
Except the Tony Blair thing I agree with you! ;-)
Not to mention Jack the Ripper...
I totally forgot what I was going to mention... it's in the bag.
We'll never find out.

I never forget Poland’s keeper. Is Shilton still playing for England? 😂
oczywiście Tomaszewski bronił świetnie, ale ewidentnie słabo u niego było z wyjściami do piłki (źle obliczał jej tor lotu) i jej piąstkowaniem
MajkiPGWCh04 Tak sie wydaje z tego skrotu. Mial i tu kilka swietnych wyjsc.
Jerzy Corgon - Walking Telephone Pole........groan!!!
Gorgoń :)
And he was only 6'2"
England's best side - superb players. We were robbed by Poles. Would have won the whole thing easy.
What was wrong with Channons goal ?
handball just before passing to him
nothing
Mike West handball
eh, Channon didn't score !
dave english
Where’s the Italian referee to bribe when you want one!
Remember when McFarland brought down the Polish player who was about to run on and score yet McFarland was not booked or sent off. Disgraceful!!
Tomaszewski... Yeah, he was quite amazing, but these highlights are such a bullshit! Watch the whole thing, where is Lato's break through and McFarland's.. what today would be an 'automatic' red... And another one-one-one? The WHOLE team played really well.
Agree. Tomaszewski had great saves, but the very best one is not in this compilation. It was a point-blank shot in the 2nd half.
I mean this one
ruclips.net/video/1imEFONbClU/видео.html
the dirty carthorse, McFarland, wrecked Poland's star player in the earlier fixture in Poland....which Poland won 2-0 ….damaged his cruciate ligaments and he was never the same player again.
Poland had one shot and scored. England goalkeeper mistake. Never got the better of England since.
How did we not win 25-nil ?
Maybe just because Poland scored first goal? ;-)
Was that the late Brian Moore commentating ?
No that is not Brian.
Hugh Johns
Schnipp08 - Thank you. Yes, of course. The late Hugh Johns - died June 27th, 2007 aged 84.
On any other night 5 - 0 for england. Shilton was useless.
Very true
Poland were a very good side then and england should have scored six!!
In the beggining I thought this was a Monty Python sketch
That ball just did not want to go in lol
Knocked us back years !!! Why no Bobby Moore????
Because he was no longer first choice at West Ham and had committed an absolute howler in the first game against Poland
Let's face it, when the iron curtain came down Eastern European football just became awful. Poland had an amazing generation of players there. Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, USSR would emerge as other great teams. But their football hasn't been what it was for 30 years now and it's clear why.
Robbed....The most one sided 1-1 draw in football history.
Has anyone ever called Shilton to task for diving over the ball ?
agreed, but it was Clemence actually.
what am i talking about!!! it was shilton
@@alancjones64 very good points made here. Shilton screwed up when it really mattered like most England goalkeepers.

Murphy's law, bad luck, jinx......
THE ⚽ WOULDN'T PASS THE WHITE LINE
England post 1970 lost Bobby Charlton and had no natural ball winner..
They shouldn't have lost in Sweden, then. In the same way England shouldn't have lost in Poland that year.
Schnipp08 i personally think Italy v Sweden, Italy had a set of very ordinary players, and a very poor manager. Deservedly failed to qualify for WC 2018. Perhaps Mancini can improve the National side.
Spurs' Martin Peters was wasted at midfield. He should have been deployed to his usual role as a goal poacher.
A discolated finger goalkeeper would be off for a month these days 😂😂😂
