Next you'll say they need to make helicopters out of bubble wrap. Grow up, the specialist have already confirmed this was most likely a case of human error. The pilot made a costly error. Helicopter crashes are extremely rare, you're more likely to die to a random spider bite than flying inside a helicopter, I would know

Public eyes need to focus more on the other families, there’s nothing worse than knowing you’ve lost your mom, wife, brother, sister and the entire world over looking or down playing the pain that you have that equates to the loss of the Bryant family. It does feel like we lost a family member because a lot of athlete’s are in our living rooms on a weekly bases. Watching my husband cheering on teams and naming them by their name and not their number, it feels pretty personal. It leaves an emptiness-not just in a death, but even when they retire. Like a family member moving away knowing you might not ever see them again. Alls I know is, Kobe left an impression on me. When he choose marrying his wife over going to the olympics-that said a lot about Kobe and how he loves his wife (soul mate) Loving husband and loving father after watching Kobe on the Jimmy Fallon show 5 months ago and talking about his 5 girls. Kobe watched what he said and showed love and respect for fellow team mates. Guess God thought Kobe’s time was up and he was needed more in Heaven. Hard to understand when there are such young people that died. God must of thought they were all needed more in Heaven too. Maybe God is putting together a basketball team called “Heaven.” No one really knows why. But Kobe always thanked God before every game as we watched and cameras rolling. He showed where his faith was. 😢

RIP but statistics don't lie. In a commercial airliner for instance you have a 1 in 11 million chance every year of dying in a crash. In a year, you have a 1 in 100 chance of dying in a car accident. Flying is the safest way to travel. I get its scary sometimes but so is just driving to work on an interstate. You are way more likely to get struck by lighting than die in a plane crash. Commercially anyway. Private planes and helicopters are a bit different but still. Driving is way worse.

This is sooooo heartbreaking for everyone. I am beyond words. The pain and brokenness in each family. My condolences and prayers to all.
Since this is the way that it had to end, I honestly hope that they were in such thick fog that they couldn't see a thing, and that they had blind faith in their pilot to get them to their destination safely. I hope that their final moments were spent talking, laughing, in peace, and calmness. I hope that they never knew what hit them. I want to believe that that's the way it was instead of terror, fear, regret, and tears.
This still doesn't seem real to me, and further propounds how we are never promised tomorrow. Make the most of each day. Love those that you cherish well, and forgive those that have hurt/ betrayed/ offended you. My thoughts, and prayers, are with all of those who were aboard the helicopter, and all of those affected by this horrific tragedy.

It has had a very negative affect on me. Some were a result of aging and some were surprising. My heart bleeds for these families. There are no words that will give comfort to their souls as they learn to navigate the goodbyes and put things in a perspective that will let them continue living a Joyful life. I am still trying to figure that out. Because it seems to me that about once a month it’s someone else I know is having to face that horrible journey.

The fog remained at the same base level outside the Calabasas area but as they flew into that area the terrain altitude increased which meant the helicopter was slowly sandwiched between the terrain and fog base as the pilot wanted to fly VFR and have orientation with the ground.
There was a lot of other air traffic at the time, he seemed to have issues communicating with ATC and wasn't receiving information fast enough from them to provide the SVFR instructions he needed.
The fog became so low it became unsafer so the pilot then made a decision to climb into the fog which caused greater disorientation, or he may have heard the ATC call he was too low for SVFR and climbed but being too high and without ATC clearance, he then risked flying up to an altitude where more aircraft were flying, creating a greater danger.
After which, he decided it safer to try and fly back down to below fog level to re-orientate himself but by then the helicopter was flying into the canyon and had nowhere to go. By the time the helicopter reached base fog level again it was going too fast and too close to the canyon to take evasive action.
The pilot had 20 years experience and instructor rated who always took safety first, I have no doubt that was his focus. He was qualified to fly in the conditions using VFR but once spacial awareness is lost, comms to ATC for SVFR, and disorientation sets in, its a recipe for disaster in those conditions, regardless of experience.

This seems like a valid logical explanation but how do you explain the pilot accelerating at high speeds when they supposedly descended to avoid the thick fog? Seems completely irrational given the circumstances. I know there is talk of possible errors in the data retrieved but if that’s the case then all the data is questionable not just that instance of acceleration.

Impossible, even if they some how miraculously survived the initial crash into the mountain at 200miles per hours, their bodies would have been completely broken, literally all bones shattered and bleeding out, they would have been to weak to get out and died from the fire inside, not to mention the helicopter exploded which caused all body parts to go in all different directions
Seeing the helicopter circling, you can’t help wonder what these loving people were thinking and feeling.

There needs to be a FAA mandate grounding rotorcraft in conditions of Zero or less than 2 mile visibility or less than a 1000’ ceiling. Hello?? Especially flying in mountains. Duh....
I realize that this is conservative but its at least a place to start. This can no longer be left to a pilot’s discretion. It’s ridiculous that this decision is left to a pilot that gets to make his own mandate. It’s just unacceptable. Pure and simple. This pilot called the decision to fly and people who put their faith in him died. Pure and simple. I know it sounds insensitive to the pilot, however what’s more important? Pilot’s discretion or ignorant passenger rights to live and survive. Families.

It would have been an hour and a half drive from Irvine/Huntington Beach to Thousand Oaks. We've driven that route many times ourselves for our kids sports and events. It was horribly foggy. Dangerous to drive a car in that thick of fog, but to decide to fly a helicopter just to save time? This just makes me angry for the loss of life of the young girls and the families now torn apart.
F Michael Davis you’re SO RIFGT even the people investigating said they tried mandating the TOZ idk if I’m speaking it right it’s for terrain and hills I think and FAA didn’t agree & the investigators said it was unnacaptable clearly the pilot was at fault human error accident and his passengers and him paid the ultimate price very very sad I SO wish passengers would have been better informed of the true danger ahead and the pilot would have just realized this was not a good day for flight so very sad ugh

I have a feeling the pilot had a heart attack or stroke that rendered him unresponsive and caused the heli to spiral to the mountain.
Omar Cabrera I agree. The helicopter ascended then immediately banked left and hurdles at a crazy speed into the ground. Suicide unlikely but some kind of trauma to the pilot was what I was thinking as it’s not like he was even close to any mountains just before it went down anyway as he descended quickly when he realised he was too low. Sad.

I thought it was foggy? Maybe the pilot wasn’t instrument rated & unknowingly got caught in IMC conditions? It happens. It’s too early to tell, but keep a look out for the NTSB report anywhere from 6 months to a year.
