Awesome video as always! All I would like to add is that the reason it doesn't like 40 mph in 4 low is because 4 low is more for crawling and going speeds under 15-25 mph. 4 high is for those speeds over that.
You really shouldn't be using 4WD high or low on dry pavement. the center diff is locked, the front and rear axles can't rotate at different speeds, every time you take a turn you're chewing up tires.
It's ok to do that in a straight line, there's people that even drag race locked. But for turns your completely right. You can even snap diffs and axles doing it.
Man I stopped watching after you put that beautiful truck in 4 low and hauled ass. That's designed for when you're stuck and need to slowly crawl out of mud, snow, and sand and can also be used to pull someone who's stuck. If you had to use 4 wheel drive on the highway use 4 high. Not hating on you just throwing that out there.
Huge fan of you'res I love the reviews whenever the come on I just think would you look at that, just look at it. You should ask forest to drive his new Cummins.
I'm sitting here watching this for the first time, thinking to myself, "I hope he's not really driving on a dry, paved road in 4 wheel drive!" Perfect way to fuck your shit up, doing shit like that!
Jared Moore this is one truck I like too. Have a couple of customer's who have them. They bring them in for service. Really good looking trucks. I could drive one as long as I also had a sports car.
Ty Gobble Same here. I couldn't just drive it, but as something to go off roading in an stuff, it would be sweet(especially if you step up to the Shelby version :)
We wanted too, but were limited on time and also nowhere to take it legally. I also thought since TS already proven off-road, why not still review it as a street truck.
FYI: 4 low is for hardcore off road stuff and slow speed crawling whereas 4 high is used in snow and higher speed off-road situations, ie dirt roads. The whole point of 4 low is to get the engine into its power band more quickly and to maintain a slower speed. It's also useful for engine braking on loose hills. Any kind of crawling you do will be in 4 low. NEVER run a vehicle on dry pavement in 4 low, that's a really good way to destroy a transfer case. I know you didn't know this so I'm just giving you a heads up for future reference :) Source: Been driving 4wd trucks since I was 10.
I personally think you should explore the truck scene some more, David! I have a decent amount of friends with trucks that are absolutely wonderful to drive. One of my bestfriends from high school has a second-gen Ram 2500 with a Cummins turbo diesel paired with a 6-speed. The term "Smiles per gallon" is ever so true with his truck.
***** He should! David, you can test drive my 2011 F-150 FX2 Sport! 3.5l Twin Turbo V6, 6 speed, 3.15 gears, MPT 93 Octane Tune, 22lbs of Boost, 500hp, 630tq. 0-60 is low 5sec and would be just as fast as your 5.0.
It's stock man, 3.5 ecoboost. 365hp and 420tq stock at 12psi, with CAI, Catless DP, and a custom 93 octane performance tune you get 135hp and around 200tq at 22psi. Hell, just a preloaded tune from SCT gives you 74hp 124tq.
You know when I went to a "rich kids" high school, the parking lot was always full of G wagons and Land Rovers, etc. But along with all that there was this couple, a guy and a girl, who both drove Ford Raptors with Insane Lift Kits. His was Black with Green Decals, hers was Pink. In those days, when i was driving a hatchback, I scoffed at how huge and audacious they seemed but now that I own an f-150 xlt I've been looking back at the anthology of Ford Trucks and hot damn.....do I want a Raptor. I wouldn't opt for the lift kit personally but when there exists a tank amongst cars I want in.
Okay I need to correct you on something. 4H is for regular off roading and any other situation where you need better traction such as snow. 4L is for situation where you need better traction and a lot of low end torque such as pulling something or hard core off roading.
Crazy how far trucks have come. My 19 Silverado LT Z71 Trail Boss has a knob for off road and sport modes, off road display, rancho shocks, 2" factory lift on Duratracs, AWD and 4wd on the fly, and a loud exhaust. It's 80% of a Raptor for half the price
I think a lot of car guys feel the same way you do about the Raptor David. I'm not a truck fan by any means, but if I were to ever buy a truck it would be the Raptor. The motor, the interior, the sporty outside look. It appeals to car guys and truck guys
you can only go so fast with the 6.2 because of gear ratios and redlines. it's the torque and acceleration you're looking at getting. otherwise a straight 1.6 liter 4 cylinder with the same red line as the raptor and the same geared tranny would have the same top speed
David I love how regardless of what you're driving, you can't help but smile every time you accelerate hard... Acceleration always brings a smile to my face too, especially when there's boost involved, it just never gets old lol...
It always interesting to hear someone's point of view who doesn't drive a truck everyday. I've grown up driving trucks, and some of the stuff you say just makes me smile... Haha.
Its a shame how people say they've had trouble with ford trucks. I love these trucks and they've never given me a problem! Hope the Ranger makes its come back soon!
@@kevindavidson6715 In the raptor its there to crawl and get out of a sticky situation, and i mean ppl by this truck as a daily do everything truck so its necessary for uprooting a tree, why wouldnt you do that ? you should have to go buy a fricken F350 King Ranch Dually Super Douche to do some yard work? its still a Full Size Truck dot dot dot (awkward)
BiG Dee I was only kidding 😂just saying that the truck is soooo torquey that 4 low is almost unnecessary if I lock the rear diff and use 4 high mine would easily pull a stump or crawl up damn near anything I can put in front of it 👍
holy fuck using 4 low like that, hope you paying to rebuild his transfer case.... and if your gonna talk about 4 wheel drive at least know what your talking about
I've heard that the shocks are rough, and the seats have minor support which in turn causes back issues. One of the guys at work has the Raptor and is searching for more comfortable seats because of this.
"If you want to daily a truck, you can get a Raptor" LOL! Not unless you want to deal with 8mpg or less. That truck is a weekend fun truck and that's about it.
ThatDudeinBlue I actually know someone who daily's a Raptor. But he has fuck you money. He used to have a huge five bedroom house and he had a three bedroom pool house with a full bar built next to his pool so that his guest wouldn't have to spend the night in his house. When his kids started going to this private school that was about 30-45 minutes away he bought a second three bedroom house near the school so that when the kids had sports practice and games they could go to that house and work on their homework before the game instead of going back to their house and not having as much time to do homework before they had to head back out.
TheCobruhAlienat0r I currently know a guy who dailys a raptor (and he doesn't use it for construction of landscaping or anything like that) he just uses it as a daily vehicle and he owns just one 5 bedroom which only costs about 450k at most, sooooo
Leois12 Okay? That's still a lot of money for a house so he has 'fuck you' money as well. I don't think anyone would use a Raptor for construction or landscaping because it sits up too high and it's payload and towing rate is lower than a normal truck. The guy I was talking about sold both of those houses and bought one big house, I think it's a 5 bedroom as well, and he still owes money on it. I think his was over $1mil.
Dave you missed quite a few things. If you PULL that 2-Hi 4-Hi 4-Low you get into diff lock from 4-Low - really helpful because in diff-lock your free wheel will not spinning with the stuck wheel stuck - power will get the stuck wheel unstuck as well. Also there is FRONT CAMERA that comes on if you engage the OFF-ROAD MODE (round button) in 4-Low. The other round button does a super-impressive job of getting you down a VERY steep hill (the front camera comes in really useful). At the minimum, you should have tried these too.
I have only rode in one never drove. This guy spanked my ass in one when i was in my Mustang GTS and he was nice enough to let me ride around with him for awhile.
4 high is used for general traction situations. Snow, ice, mud and such. 4 low is beneficial when you're going up a steep hill or going through thick mud or sand. With the lower gear ratio, it will turn the wheels slower but increase the torque output to the wheels. So if you were to try going up a steep hill in 4 high, you could come to a point where you lose momentum and have to give it more gas, which could result in your tires spinning. Here, 4 low helps to keep the tires moving slow and steady but with LOW rpm torque.
+matt1315s You miss the point. That was completely stupid to do that in any 4x4 mode. Toasted axle and transfer case for sure. He won't have to deal with it though. Someone like me who buys it 10 years later will be the one to fix it.
Nope. Just have to have confidence. Haha. Motortrend years ago did a times lap with E92 M3 and a coyote mustang and the Mustang only lost by a tenth. Good ol willow springs. But driver confidence/skill must be higher
Honestly, I don't have a problem with the truck, but it seems like everyone I've met that happens to drive a raptor, is just a complete asshole. They try to act like they're better then everyone else on the road. Hope this isn't the case for everyone one that has also met a raptor owner or owns one.
HazardWolfGaming sorry to hear that - don't know where you are located, but you will find the most amazing gentlemen and ladies - all raptor owners - at facebook.com/groups/MidAtlanticFordRaptorAssociation/
Also from SoCal and totally agree...raptor drivers here are not chill, I also think most of these raptors have never even come within 50 miles of actual dirt.
Yeah in Australia if I see a raptor (really rare so I get happy) the driver is a bit of a douche. I think its like the mentality that they've got a big truck and I mean, I'd move out of the way I I was in an mx5 lol. Or it could be compensation... Nah jks
you should NOT be reviewing trucks! you know NOTHING about them! 4x4hi is for snow, the 4x4lo is for offroad. you obviously HATE that transfercase if you're launching in 4x4lo... leave the 4x4 trucks to the guy that actually know what the hell they are talking about...
I'm like you, mostly a [sports] car guy, but trucks are useful too. and trucks like the Raptor, or modded trucks are also cool. I can't corner with my F-150 very well [compared to sports cars I've owned, especially] but I can overtake regular bland cars with ease.
The high cost of producing this truck and the huge amount of money that you have to spend to own it are the reasons why ford raptor is better than the other truck out there. Good review by the way.
A dude from Florida, in Florida with Florida plates: "it really shines in the snow.".......well-fuck me! Let me tell you all about the orange groves of Wisconsin while I have your ear.
I'm a car guy and I agree that this truck has a special effect on many other car enthusiasts. I saw a red lifted one yesterday and my jaw dropped. Also, hi David!
4x4 cannot be disabled on these trucks I believe. I had a Ford with Awd transfer case and there was no 2wd. It can take full power street launch no problem. The power goes to rear just like 2wd and sends what's left to the front which ain't much because the weight shift. It is designed for it.
Me and my dad actually got to drive the Raptor about 1 year before they came out since they were cold weather testing them where I live and he knew some guys who worked for the state (that's who was testing them for ford) and we got to test it out on some dirt trails! It was a blast.
Sometimes I feel lost with all of the car lingo on this channel, but I still love seeing all of the reviews you post. I love cars, but I only know car names, brands, and what type of body structure I like in a car. That's as far as my car knowledge goes. I especially love Smurf. Blue is my favorite color.
just for the record, 4 low is NOT for snow. You do not need more torque in the snow actually it is quite the opposite. 4 low is needed when you are rock crawling.
A Very enjoyable truck that kick butt I really like driving my own Raptor I have a custom 595 horsepower with a supercharger very fast and super powered.
Trucks are a decent part of car culture. It would be nice to see more. Especially modded ones. 12 valves, 6.0 powerstrokes, 7.3 powerstrokes, Duramaxes and gas trucks, maybe a lightning.
The reason there's no tire noise is because they are all terrains. Mudding tires on the other hand make a lot of noise. You should really drive more trucks, they can be fun and some of them even fast. Try and find a lowered GM c1500 to review, with either a 350 vortec(96+ the TBI is slow I have one) or one that has a 5.3 swapped in. The 5.3 doubles the horsepower of my 305 TBI and it will be really quick and can handle good if the suspension is upgraded. Especially if it has a a power adder.
This truck is probably akin to the beefiness of the late 70s early 80s F250's. Those things are very heavy duty machines. I wish someone would let you review one lol.
If you get one just one thing to remember, it can't pass a gas station without a visit. I would NOT recommend this a daily driver. I drive 65 mile round trip to work every day and this gets worse gas mileage than my 35 foot Winnebago. Great fun truck buy damn it gets like 12 MPH
I wish you were closer, I'd have you drive our 4 door long bed dually Ram 3500 with a cummins and 6 speed. That would be an interesting experience and review for you I think.
I wouldn't have stomped it in 4 low on pavement but regardless it is a sweet truck. But if I'm going to get a new truck it'll be another powerstroke to replace my old one. Diesel all the way. Great review of the driving experience any way!
218k miles on my 2013, 0 issues. Local guy has 406k miles on his original drivetrain on his and 0 issues. Love mine.
This thing seemed like a tank compared to some of the cars I've driven- was such a blast though! Thanks for watching and stay awesome!
ThatDudeinBlue since this is your 399th video, are you going to do a special video to celebrate the 400 milestone David?
ThatDudeinBlue Now all that's next is the Velociraptor from Hennessy
Lean Max87 400th vid and 300k subscriber special?
ThatDudeinBlue have you considered doing video on your opinion on the 2016 raptor?
FatalityTwinz 300k video yes, 400th video no.
I cringed when he put it in 4low and launched it
8 years late, but yea that’s a good way to nuke the transfer case
I'm not a truck guy, but this is the only truck I would consider getting.
What about dodge srt10 ram
Oh you lucky son of a gun.. I adore that car
TJ if you can, review some trucks bro!
Tj Hunt tj That's not a car... That be a truck....
I hate it when people car trucks cars... Pet peeve of mine.
Lukas19360 Yeah... I hate when people car trucks cars as well...lmao
+Tj Hunt Don't listen to these guys Tj they knew what you meant there just trying to point ur mistakes out.
Ugh, I cringed. Never go above 10mph in 4lo on ANY vehicle - not just a Raptor.
John Lamb yeah especially with over 400hp
You can go as fast as the truck will let you in 4low and it won't hurt it
That immediate grin as you drove it....Mine hasn't faded since I bought my 2012. Raptors are incredible.

Not sure you should be running it in 4x4 Low on pavement. And not sure you should be doing like 40MPH in 4 low either.
+Torpedomtb Agree! There is a big difference between all wheel drive and four wheel drive and he seemed to think it was one in the same.
dude you're gonna fuck that truck up launching from 4wd on pavement
Owner told me too.Challenge accepted.
ThatDudeinBlue well if he gave you permission, no harm done lmao
how do you fck up when launching a 4x4?

lmCIoudz Launching/ driving straight wont hurt anything at all. Only when turning will the driveline bind and possibly cause damage.
You really shouldn't be using 4WD high or low on dry pavement. the center diff is locked, the front and rear axles can't rotate at different speeds, every time you take a turn you're chewing up tires.

Very cringeworthy!!
Wow I about had a heart attack when I saw the same thing. He has no business driving a 4wd.

im sure his buddy is gonna love that part of the video! lol
i had the same thought lol I was like noooooo...
You aren't supposed to put the F-150 in 4wheel on dry pavement, in the manual it even says DONT

Trucks will grow on you. It is all about execution and body style.

+matt1315s You miss the point. That was completely stupid to do that in any 4x4 mode. Toasted axle and transfer case for sure. He won't have to deal with it though. Someone like me who buys it 10 years later will be the one to fix it.
I have an ecoboost quad cab same color but have friends that have raptors and the ones that are die hard off roaders actually up graded the shocks.
David does the Smurf struggle to take corners quickly?
Nope. Just have to have confidence. Haha. Motortrend years ago did a times lap with E92 M3 and a coyote mustang and the Mustang only lost by a tenth. Good ol willow springs. But driver confidence/skill must be higher
TonyAvalosGTA if it doed, what suspension components did you have to change in order to remove all the body roll?
ThatDudeinBlue Glad to hear that :D, thanks for the advice and response, keep making awesome videos!
Probably my favorite truck out there!

And those tires are BFGs All Terrains KO, they are one of the quietest off-road tires on the market
Supratim Sanyal I'm in Southern California. I guess I could've just said that everyone drives and acts like an asshole 😅
Nah jks
HazardWolfGaming lol sounds like you are butthurt
Best part about this video is when he mentioned the guy's name who loaned him the raptor. I went to high school with the guy!
Stopped watching when launched in 4low.... He doesn't know much about trucks....
Awesome review David!! I have always wanted a Raptor and now after watching your review I want one even more.
you should NOT be reviewing trucks! you know NOTHING about them! 4x4hi is for snow, the 4x4lo is for offroad. you obviously HATE that transfercase if you're launching in 4x4lo... leave the 4x4 trucks to the guy that actually know what the hell they are talking about...
uhm 4x4 hi can be used in dirt snow mud or anything 4x4lo is for crawling out of sand and from being stock and rock crawling
I have a 94' lightning with beltech drop spindles and minor bolt-ons and I've always wanted to watch one of your videos on my truck!
Ferd rerpter
David = King of cinematic car shots!
Brilliant Video! :)
David your next truck should be a lightning!!!
I'm like you, mostly a [sports] car guy, but trucks are useful too. and trucks like the Raptor, or modded trucks are also cool. I can't corner with my F-150 very well [compared to sports cars I've owned, especially] but I can overtake regular bland cars with ease.
I want one of these soooo bad!! there's no other truck that's like it for real
The high cost of producing this truck and the huge amount of money that you have to spend to own it are the reasons why ford raptor is better than the other truck out there. Good review by the way.
You should find someone near you with a built diesel truck and try that out. Diesel trucks are on another level of power and fun.
The one that was shown on Top Gear UK was crazy!
My friend's parents have a roush raptor phase 2 and it's no slouch i love it and its loud
Raptor, + 4 15s in a 4th order blowthrough on 20k rms== heaven
A Very enjoyable truck that kick butt I really like driving my own Raptor I have a custom 595 horsepower with a supercharger very fast and super powered.
You should drive a 2015 duramax 2500HD high country for your next truck. Gotta love the diesel power and Allison transmission.
Trucks are a decent part of car culture. It would be nice to see more. Especially modded ones. 12 valves, 6.0 powerstrokes, 7.3 powerstrokes, Duramaxes and gas trucks, maybe a lightning.
Yes, I love trucks and the color on this Raptor is beautiful!
By far my favorite truck in production today
This truck is probably akin to the beefiness of the late 70s early 80s F250's. Those things are very heavy duty machines. I wish someone would let you review one lol.
If you get one just one thing to remember, it can't pass a gas station without a visit. I would NOT recommend this a daily driver. I drive 65 mile round trip to work every day and this gets worse gas mileage than my 35 foot Winnebago. Great fun truck buy damn it gets like 12 MPH
The All Terrains on Raptors, from the factory, are a different compound from normal BFG A/Ts. They're made to be quieter than the normal tires.
At first i thought at the end you said "Drugs" i had to go back and replay it to hear "Trucks" lmao
The black ones look good. I'm not a fan of the brighter colors, like the blue or red.
I wish you were closer, I'd have you drive our 4 door long bed dually Ram 3500 with a cummins and 6 speed. That would be an interesting experience and review for you I think.
Doesn't matter whose driving it, it's sturdy enough to handle anything!
i think you got the 4 High and 4 Low mixed up. Low range is better when off roading and going mudding, while 4 high is your general purpose 4WD (snow)
I wouldn't have stomped it in 4 low on pavement but regardless it is a sweet truck. But if I'm going to get a new truck it'll be another powerstroke to replace my old one. Diesel all the way. Great review of the driving experience any way!
