Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance. FYI, most kitsunes would like to know more about the "real" girls, but there's very little info outside of basic biographies. They have no social media and the general public has hardly heard or seen anything from Yui for over three years, only second hand reports from other Sakura Gakuin grads like Aiko Yamaide and a pretty bland 10th year anniversary interview for Sakura Gakuin. You can see lots of the girls in Sakura Gakuin videos and some of them before that, but they are almost always performing. The concert DVDs have some behind the scenes stuff and there is an early video of a trip to Singapore where I think you get a sense of them just being kids, but even pictures of them in "street clothes" are not that common, especially after they went full time with Babymetal. Koba keeps a pretty tight lid on things and wants the lore to be in the front of the fans minds rather who someone is dating. Insulating the girls from fans is probably a good thing if it means they can have private lives, but Su, Moa and Yui and pretty much enigmas, Yui particularly as she's basically done nothing for 3 years, but is still under contract with Amuse. The Kamis do have social media accounts and do a lot of other projects, but they keep the code of silence when it comes to anything about Babymetal.
Totally respect that, I didn’t mean I wanted to know more about their private lives, but off the stage, not necessarily outside of BABYMETAL though. Just like interviews etc. I already watched and filmed my reaction for the guide earlier, but I also really like that they’ve managed to keep their actual selves shielded from the public and maintained. Hearing just some of the stuff k-idols go through with stalkers and stuff is crazy. So I totally understand their company keeping a tight lid on that stuff for them.
@@gombers Agreed, Amuse had some issues with online abuse of some of their talent so it's probably good that Babymetal's official social media is strictly monitored and Su and Moa are kept well away from it. @@gombers Not long ago, someone (I assumed was from Japan) replied to one of my youtube comments talking about how one of his/her friends had to go to some type of group similar to Alcoholics Anonymous but for people infatuated with the BABYMETAL girls. So I am definitely glad the girls have their lives kept private and that they are off of social media. Luckily, from what I remember reading, Moa has said that when she goes out in public, people don't recognize her. So, they do not crucify Su-Metal every time they do this song, just on some of her birthdays lol “BABYMETAL Death” was a song they usually opened shows up with, since they’re just introducing themselves basically. On special occasions, like Legend 1997 and Legend S, they crucified Su-Metal to symbolize her moving onto the next phase of her life. In this show, it was her going from J-Pop idol to metal goddess. At Legend S it was for her coming of age (and additional other complex lore stuff). So here basically, “Headbanger” is about a 15 year old girl going to her first Metal show and it changes her life. “Akatsuki (Unfinished)” is essentially her getting ready to give up her life and sacrifice herself (which is why she starts crying in the performance, you can see her makeup running down her face), and “BABYMETAL Death” is the sacrifice itself, obviously. Oh, and when you do the guide, I have two versions. A 17 minute version and a 43 minute version. The shorter one basically teaches the basics, the longer one (which I just uploaded today) goes into a lot more detail. BABYMETAL fans are no strangers to long reaction videos, we are the ones who try to get everyone to do their full concerts after all. So, pick your poison. Lol Edit: I knew it was a helicopter right away lol. I live by a military base so I get that all the time.
Well the lyrics won't take long... Fun fact, if you look closely, the "DNA" helix design in the intro to "Babymetal DEATH" is also on Su's stick mic that she uses in "Headbanger". There are a couple of Metallica homages in the statue and the music and they spell out B.A.B.Y.M.E.T.A.L. "Babymetal Death" here is the last song in the concert and is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale rather than the usual introduction. The manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Akatsuki came before it and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the context and the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. Yes it's very silly, but just go with it. So on the day after her 16th birthday, as a present Su is transformed from a simple Sakura Gakuin school girl and reborn as a Metal Goddess to fulfill the plans of the Fox God, and that obviously requires crucifixion. The statue is Su in a "Mary likeness". It was also a transition in real life for Suzuku Nakamoto as a few months earlier she'd graduated from high school and the idol group "Sakura Gakuin (Moa and Yui were still members) and had started to work full time on Babymetal. The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography here juxtaposes death and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears (which is entirely on purpose), but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together just as in the crucifixion. The Japanese are far less precious about religion than most Westerners and take aspects of whatever religion works for them in a particular situation. The appropriation of the cross and the "Mary statue" here just serves the theatrical purpose to tell a story. Did I mention #notacult?
From what I hear those that know Evangelion say Babymetal took this Christian vibe/style from Evangelion. This show also has a cover of an Evangelion song. Evangelion is a Japanese mecha anime television. Wikipedia claims: "Evangelion has had a significant impact on Japanese popular culture. The series also had a strong influence on anime, at a time when the anime industry and televised anime series were in a slump period"
@@autohmae LOL if you could see the shelf to my left... I literally have evangelion manga 😅😅😅 it’s been awhile since I read them since I first did like 18 years ago but still.
⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up. This performance was very unusual since it was used as the closing number. The song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese. In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are". It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. : ) So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL". The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" one letter at a time. EDIT: I finished watching the rest of the video, and see that you looked up the lyrics. So, never mind. : )
Hahahha all good friend! I always appreciate your extra context. The guide reaction ran pretty long so I’m tempted to cut it into two parts released at the same time though. We’ll see how it goes but it should probably be available next week 😁
@@gombers Yeah, the Guide is a lot. : ) It will be great to see your reaction to it though. Did you read the translation of the intro to this 'Legend 1997' 'BABYMETAL Death' performance? It's pretty cool.
@@rickwagner- I watched it this morning so it made editing this a lot more fun haha. I did but after the fact because I’m late to everything hahaha. Sound like anyone familiar? 😅😅😅
@@gombers - i don't agree at all that it means 'desu' and not 'death'. It's a double meaning. It means both. But the official lyrics are clearly 'death'. They have even shown the lyrics in concerts and it says 'death'. But don't take the christian imagery too seriously, there is no religious meaning they simply think it 'looks gothic'. it's like when european people have buddah statues or get tattoos with japanese kanji. In Japan they have 'decoration english' which nobody pays attention to but is pretty hilarious if you actually read it. There are some good youtube videos about it if you want a chuckle sometime.
Great reaction as always. This is a great opener for a Babymetal show to hype up the crowd... but they did play this as their last song from this particular show... From the guitar tone to the drums to the lore of Su being crucified, overall the energy and the performance was awesome..
Great reaction. I don't know if you are aware, but these were the 3 lasts songs from the Legend 1997 show 9also known in my home as 'the best damn sweet 16 party ever !): Headbanager, which ends with the girls on the ground after Su-metal hit the gong. Akatsuki Unfinished, which starts with Su-metal on the ground. After a introduction video with the cool artwork. She sings about how her love will prevail even if their was nothing left of her body. Babymetal Death, which starts off with a video explaining how little time is left until, euh.. a new beginning after the end. A rebirth. Also Babymetal Death clearly is also meant as an introduction, it's even the first song on the first album. And as others have mentioned: the first song of many older shows.
I’m interested to see how it was done as an intro since the crucifixions are only done for special occasions and birthdays right? If I’ve been reading the comments correct, I think Headbanger, Akatsuki, and Babymetal DEATH are the trilogy of death right? I’ve been going back to these three and replaying them a lot. Also, I don’t think anyone can top this for a 16th bday lol.
@@gombers Honestly I wonder where this talk about 'trilogy of death' comes from. It's a term I've only seen in recent months in RUclips comments nowhere else. And I've been an active fan for years. So seems to be just some fan's invention. If you want to see a normal Babymetal Death opener, "BABYMETAL DEATH - Mountain View, CA (4k Quality)" is a good one in quality and it has some funny moments. :-) It shows both their professionalism and how much fun they are having (if you do a reaction, be sure to select a resolution your computer can handle playback and recording at the same time)

No further ... Oh oh! Just for your information, I witnessed newly arranged BABYMETAL DEATH 3 times at the venue of Budokan on Feb.19, Apr. 14 and 15. That was much harder than this and I saw Su, Moa and Momoko (one of Avengers) all crucified on the emblem of 2020.
Great reaction, thanks! This is the best way to celebrate your 16th birthday LOL. And I believe that super hyped crowd got finally what they deserved. Actually, what always surprises me is Moa fixing Su's ponytail... but I guess no one wants to reborn as a metal goddess with the hair messed up :) Until next time!

Woohoo! Been waiting for this one. Your deep dives into the lyrics and meaning of the songs saves us a lot of time typing out everything. My fingers for one...or ten, thank you. That being said, the reason for the performance was to mark Su's 16th birthday and her transformation from Idol to metal goddess. She had to be sacrificed for that transformation to be completed. This ritual was also performed at her 20th birthday where she was sacrificed to be come the messiah. It's a lot of lore related stuff, but is all just good fun. There are no religious overtones intended, it's just a very metal thing to do.
Oh I wasn’t turned off by any of the supposedly religious symbolism. Plus I get that aesthetically it’s used in the genre so it didn’t surprise me too much hahaha. I do have religious family who sometimes checks out the channel so... I’ll warn them not to watch this one... if they couldn’t tell by the thumbnail already 🤣🤣🤣 Loved the performance though and hope one day I can see them live 🦊🤘🖤
Once you hit this point, it's time for the guide. But yeah, got my aunt and dad into Babymetal and have the bluray of this concert but can't show it to them. The amount of explanation needed for not only this song but the statue isn't worth the risk of "familial excomunication". But being a theatre graduate gives me some feels for the great performance art and dedication to concept here of the re-born goddess of metal, awesome! Can't wait for your next reaction, it always puts an "ALL CAPS" on my day when you do one! (No RWBY or Buffy reference this time other than Buffy's sacrifice to save Dawn and like Su-metal comes back from death to share her power with others thus creating more slayers and for Su raining the light of heaven through song to make others The One....yep, reaching on this one. Enjoy the guide!)
I totally feel you on not being able to show this to family just because you don’t want to have to explain how it’s NOT disrespectful to religion 🤣 Maybe some madoka vibes? If you’ve seen the 2nd or 3rd movie? Hahaha

Thank you for the BABYMETAL reaction again ! At first glance, BABYMETAL DEATH seems to dance easily, but according to an interview with YUI and MOA, they are physically tired more than they expected. They seem to be wondering if this is really the purpose of preparatory gymnastics lol. I personally also love BABYMETAL DEATH from LIVE AT WEMBLEY 2016. The scene in which three girls appeared at the very beginning with a classic gimmick surprised me. Among the live videos sold on Blu-ray, the LIVE AT WEMBLEY is one of the concerts that brings out the charm of BABYMETAL through the overall production. Please take a look if you have a chance someday.

Why are you worried about your parents seeing you watch this?? 😅 I'm 54 and I still do the church thing but I watch it. I bet God head bangs to this song. 😄 I wonder what Su was thinking when she was on the cross. Was she liking the rest she was getting or was she wishing she could be running around jumping and hyping the crowd too?
Lol it was more an offhand comment. They’re very old school Catholic and as open as they are about my lifestyle, they’re sticklers about how their religion is “depicted”. But what they think doesn’t really affect what I consume or believe so it really doesn’t matter, like you said hahaha Edit: I know my God headbangs to this song 😁🦊🤘🖤
@@gombers I take it seriously too but I don't find anything offensive about this. I don't see it as glorifying Satan or crapping on Religion so no problem. They're just having fun with the imagery. In the Legend S concert lore, Su is referred to as the 'New Messiah'. Sent down from the heavens to give hope to the people in despair through her singing. Or something like that anyway. So Religious themes pop up fairly frequently. You should check out something from the Legend S concert if you can. It's a crazy visual experience. I think Reactor Resource has a couple choices. It might be available on Amazon yet for less than 10 bucks.

Lol
Edit: I knew it was a helicopter right away lol. I live by a military base so I get that all the time.
Great reaction once again! Really looking forward to your reaction to the BM guide, cause I don't think you have seen anything past 2017 yet?!
I haven’t yet! I’m gonna have to start checking out stuff from around then and more recent. I’m excited to get to it 🦊🤘😁
Well the lyrics won't take long...
Hahahaha I love all this lore. It’s so epic and really adds to the theatrics and performance level.
@@gombers Search for "AJ Hartley" on RUclips and you'll find his excellent analysis and criticism of the lore and cultural aspects of Babymetal songs.
@@cuttysark8017 Yeah, Andrew Hartley's videos are hugely informative if you want to know a bit more of the background and cultural influences.
@@autohmae LOL if you could see the shelf to my left... I literally have evangelion manga 😅😅😅 it’s been awhile since I read them since I first did like 18 years ago but still.

The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up.
This performance was very unusual since it was used as the closing number.
The song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese.
In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are". It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. : )
So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL".
It will be great to see your reaction to it though.
From the guitar tone to the drums to the lore of Su being crucified, overall the energy and the performance was awesome..
.... they're spelling out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L
Lol yeah I note that in my comments during the reaction 😅😅
I was just dumb initially lol
Great reaction. I don't know if you are aware, but these were the 3 lasts songs from the Legend 1997 show 9also known in my home as 'the best damn sweet 16 party ever !):
Headbanager, which ends with the girls on the ground after Su-metal hit the gong.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛, but you left the curtain open? It's not a good idea. What if your neighbors saw you smirking and watching a video of dark ceremony where a young girl was being crucified? 😄
Anyway all necessary information about this song has been already told here.
They are actually spelling "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L"

Did anyone count how many times Yui and Moa jumped up during this song?
Great reaction, thanks!
This is the best way to celebrate your 16th birthday LOL. And I believe that super hyped crowd got finally what they deserved.
Actually, what always surprises me is Moa fixing Su's ponytail... but I guess no one wants to reborn as a metal goddess with the hair messed up :)
Until next time!
I thought that moment was so endearing and a good glimpse of the girls beyond the stage personas haha. Gotta make sure that hair is right for metal goddess ascension 🦊🤘
I think of that as metal theater. It is performance piece to hype up the crowd.
100% metal theatre and I was LIVING for it 😃😃🦊🤘🖤

Best intro-hype song ever - so Metallica it hurts, lol. Very interested to see what you make of the guide you watch - the story behind Babymetal is very different to what most Western music fans are used to.
I knew that intro was reminiscent of something, I don’t know a lot of Metallica, but the songs I do know definitely came to mind when the intro started.

I’ll warn them not to watch this one... if they couldn’t tell by the thumbnail already 🤣🤣🤣

I totally feel you on not being able to show this to family just because you don’t want to have to explain how it’s NOT disrespectful to religion 🤣
Maybe some madoka vibes? If you’ve seen the 2nd or 3rd movie? Hahaha
Another awesome reaction! If you like Indie, you should really check out Aurora!!! She has a really strong fanbase like BabyMetal and could help grow your channel! She also has one of the best voices on the planet and I am sure you would love her!!🦊🦊🦊
Thanks for the rec! Always looking for new music so I’ll add this to my list and check her out 😁
Thank you for the BABYMETAL reaction again !

Only on Birthdays, Babymetal would do this. The performance is second to none. Homage to Metallica Justice for All. The opening riffs is Metallica song ONE. The destruction of the statue is like Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City Mexico. Babymetal pushed boundaries. Only in Japan. If this were to be held overseas, you know what I mean. Oh yeah, could definitely see this only being a special occasions type of performance.
Why are you worried about your parents seeing you watch this?? 😅 I'm 54 and I still do the church thing but I watch it. I bet God head bangs to this song. 😄
I wonder what Su was thinking when she was on the cross. Was she liking the rest she was getting or was she wishing she could be running around jumping and hyping the crowd too?
Lol it was more an offhand comment. They’re very old school Catholic and as open as they are about my lifestyle, they’re sticklers about how their religion is “depicted”. But what they think doesn’t really affect what I consume or believe so it really doesn’t matter, like you said hahaha
Edit: I know my God headbangs to this song 😁🦊🤘🖤
@@gombers I take it seriously too but I don't find anything offensive about this. I don't see it as glorifying Satan or crapping on Religion so no problem. They're just having fun with the imagery. In the Legend S concert lore, Su is referred to as the 'New Messiah'. Sent down from the heavens to give hope to the people in despair through her singing. Or something like that anyway. So Religious themes pop up fairly frequently. You should check out something from the Legend S concert if you can. It's a crazy visual experience. I think Reactor Resource has a couple choices.
