Update: the Ducati test rider Shumi refers to is Andrea Rossi (andreacicarossi on instagram). He's promised to not get distracted by instagram handles going forward 😊

I'll be saving money for the next 2 years. My family is going to be happy for the next 2 years. In 2025 my relatives will say "you could've bought a car for that price" and my family will be furious that I'm broke at this age.
Never before on any other show the ADV's had been discussed this deeply. As a one who rides an NTorq, this is like an encyclopedia & I was thinking to go for an ADV for my next bike so thanks a lot. Watching Shumi & Kathikeya speak about motorbikes like watching Einstein & Newton discuss about the cosmos. Kudos to both of them & thanks for educating me on the pros & cons of an ADV.
I don't know what other people think but personally I loved the minimalist ,subtle look and feel of the videos, don't make it too much cluttery , specially the background
Happy new year guys! There is no better way to start the new year than talking about ADVs. I say that because I just upgraded to my first big bike which is the V-Strom 650. This is the bike that will give me a go-anywhere ability (within reason) without scaring me with too much power or a huge size. It checks all the right boxes for me - it gives me great cruisability on the highway without breaking a sweat, comfortable ride quality and spot-on weight distribution. Whats not to like about ADVs! :)
The origins of Adv explained from 4:00 mins is best part of this episode for me. More such stories of the origins of bike segments would be so awesome and interesting!
You guys made me live my initial days when I started riding tiger in 2016, that feel of being on suv on two wheels, seeing and passing through the traffic easily. Even touching on heavy bikes in offroad trails, still people over here don't get it, have seen them dropping their costly bikes on trails running road tyres I took correct path with xpulse for honing my skills on tiger, later tried g310gs which came out to be jack of all trade master of none before enjoying the real mx with KTM sfx350, hope things will change soon and we will get entire spectrum of bikes and people will realize that best garage is always current number of bikes +1.
I'm 39 and in the past 2 decades, the traffic has increased immensely in our country. I remember I was maybe 17/18 when the Pulsars/CBZ came out and those were performance bikes of that time. And we loved riding them fast cos the roads were also relatively empty. Now even if you have a sporty bike, the roads are just jammed up to even ride spiritedly.
That only means that you're stuck inside the city. Shumi put 55,000km on his first Multistrada... all of it in India, quite a bit of it just commuting in Mumbai. We can always add as many reasons as we like to why we _cannot_ do something. Doesn't make life better, though
I currently ride a splendor plus that i built during COVID as a retro commuter cafe racer kinda and have been saving up for the Himalayan 450 from last 2 years😊
Adv 390 ... My first ever Bike.. first ever anything.. ridden a bicycle till the end of my school days.. Glad that I waited and bought a ADV for myself.. the feeling that you don't have to worry about your bike or the terrain.. you know that you can manage it with a ADv.. that sense of freedom.. for me.. it's all that I want in a bike
@belch1693 its amazing... it has its flaws.. not that great in bumper to bumper traffic rides.. suspension feels stiff in cities.. frequent front fork oil leaks.. but still you'll fall in love with it.. take it out on highways and you'll know why many riders love the adv.. if you're planning to get one.. get the him450 now or if you can wait for a year , watch out for the new face lift of 390adv, but it'll come in 2025 , a proper upgrade
@@chalonish I think the sw would be better since it has the adjustable suspension. I actually want the thrill and speed of ktm which the himalayan lacks🌚
Happy New Year Guys!!! Yet another, superb and a hot topic to discuss about. I own the KTM 390 Adv. This bike can do everything which I want it to do like go fast on the highways, corner on serpentine roads, riding up the hill without being stressed about power, filter through traffic easily and sit comfortably. It is a pocket-friendly option for touring. The light weight of the bike makes life easier for me to handle it like a 100 or a 125cc bike. I am not a big fan of off-road riding but if I face bad roads on my way to a place, this bike can do it. I loved the Duke 390 but always felt cramped for space, hence I chose this. In the market, there is a huge gap between INR 400,000 to INR 650,000 and I think this is the space the brands are eyeing to capture for the Adv market because, currently, if you want to move up the ladder, to a twin cylinder Adv (Touring) bike, you have to shell out 6.5 lakhs Rupees minimum. Cheers!!
I ride an NS125 (first motorcycle and also the one I began my riding journey on) but what got me into motorcycles was the Adventure Touring class and as an enthusiast motorcyclist this video is like a pot of gold for me so big thanks for that Also, the NS has helped me find my style of riding wherein I'm comfortable and happy so this is definitely going to help me add that first ADV Tourer into my garage but a few years down the line where I hope India as a market is at a much better place when it comes to this class of machines
Watching the video in oct 24, with KTM 390 adv 2025 varieents almost fully leaked. And I am surprised to see how much schumi was right about the 390 adv for 2025. Well done !
Fantastic! This is something what I admire, Great energy, I bought an ADV by listening to Shumi in PD, that proved to be one of the best decisions ever! Others should listen to this and consider ADVs seriously. Great job, thoroughly enjoyed it!
You both were correct about the Himalayan 450. RE is less likely to screw it up, but as Karthikeya said, I am too protecting myself emotionally before its launch. Great podcast as usual guys, Kudos.
Exactly an year back, saw a podcast from pd related to Adv's the advantages of it.. saved for 7 months got an xpulse! Till then I was keeping an eye on classic! But my perspective changed.. Like whatever you said its really true! the way we can see in the traffic, great cornering speed, the confidence it gives.. anywhere we point it just goes.. that beautiful! From then I never felt love towards normal street motorcycles..somehow😂Such a bliss feeling it is.. to ride such tall motorcycle. Wish we keep evolving much more in this format..! Great podcast, always a good feeling..
The sheer passion with which you speak when Karthik sir ask you a question or when you set off leaves me in awe. It's like your trying to tell us everything and take us there while being concise. Sometimes i wish i could just download it all and view it through your eyes⚡
This channel is exactly what I was looking for. Shumi, been a fan of you from the BS Motoring days and Kartikeya, from Zigwheels days. The adventure tourer makes perfect sense for our roads because of the way our roads are. I waited too long for the Himalayan and finally out of desperation bought a UCE TB 350 back in '16. The one time I got to ride the Himalayan, I was blown by the sheer comfort and confidence that bike gave me over my TB350. But with the BS6 variant weighing close to 200kgs and the power being the same, it just don't have the go. But having had a bittersweet ASS experience I surely don't wanna go the RE again until they can surprise me on the reliability front. Xpulse is more at home on trails than on asphalt, but the power is inadequate for open roads. Which brings me to the question of the ideal adventure tourer for our roads. A reliable, long stroke, single cylinder 450cc-500cc with 40-45 bhp on tap, sorted electricals, 14-15L tank, with the suspension setup of the Himalayan, weighing 170-180kg would be perfect. Nuff said.
This podcast, one word, INSIGHTFUL 👌 You guys have made me wanna have a resolution in 2023, even when I said no to em. Now please guide the likes of me to pick the right ADV 😆. Wish you a stupendous 2023 MotorInc.
Nice dudes 👍.. I'm becoming a great lover of this podcast. So natural, relevant, uncensored, and free-flowing.. it seems like 2 of my brothers siting with us and having a jam on my fav topic and I'm a listening and nodding my head. This adv topic just spered through my heart. Love it Bros. Im a followers of yours since powerdrift days..great comeback men. Wish you & Motoinc all best.. take care buddies seeing you in the next topic.. BTW misses the simplified modules though..
Welcome aboard! Wow, so happy to read this Indranil! AS to simple technical content... it's not off our radar. However, we set to make stories that match our quality and clarity standard. As soon as we figure it out, we'll have a barrage of them for sure
Hi, you guys are doing a well educated talk/podcast/videos on automobiles especially 2 wheeler and I really appreciate it and learnt a lot. I have a small request from me along with the people of mine who admire old bikes, 2 stroke bikes which ruled Indian roads and tracks. We do have in our garage, use daily as commute, collection and a huge passion for these 2 wheelers which have paved path for new age 2 wheelers in India. We would like to hear your two discussion about these Old collection bikes/scooters which were middle class family love for these and how to have it passed on and educating for the future generations about how motorcycles meant, used to be with purposes and practicality rather than aesthetics and doing the same as competitors do (present situation). Nowadays youths are fascinated in restoring their grandfather, dads old bikes for the love and passion for it. FYI, there were several motorcycle enthusiasts back in 80's 90's who did world tour on old 2 stroke and 4 stroke bikes which I guess you have a even better experience and knowledge with them. Looking forward to a video on it 😊
Oh my god! I had purchased my bike 12 years ago thinking the exact things you guys brought up. I was pinched wrt money so I purchased GS150R, which was not as quick off the line as it's rivals (even cheaper ones) but it was large, tall, fairly maneuverable, could cruise at 100 kmph without vibrations with 130 kmph top speed (I actually took it to 135) and ridiculously comfortable (at least for my build). Plus it had a 15l tank. I recently did 600km on my 12 year old bike in a single day and it was still a comfortable experience.
27:41 Well said, going slow is the best way to start off road. But I will add that true stuff to do on a adv is to do the same off roading more meticulously and with speed.
28:13 here's where Vstrom 250 makes Sense. also at vfm proposition, Suzuki is offering attractive offers on it (I've visited 2 showrooms in my city, & took a test ride).
Having ridden the puny and big ones .... I have always believed that the sweet spot for me would lie somewhere between Xpulse and Versys - 200-600 - that's where Xpulse 400 and Himalayan 450 would sit beautifully... One bike sat in UK that was CCM 450 but was too brutal for mere mortals...
The CCM is legendary strong for sure! And the 450-500cc Adv, to us, would be perfect for 90% of Indian riders automatically... and then personal preferences will drive that number down a bit, naturally
@@motorinc absolutely I've never felt that I yearn to ever be an owner of litre class and above .... If a well built almost half a litre can finish races like no one's business, a tamer version can surely tackle the beast that is our roads...
I feel the tall, heavy, do it all ADVs make sense only due to the road conditions and the unpredictability thereof. Even on the Golden Quadrilateral, you are bound to encounter stretches of broken roads which will catch you and your rims off-guard. You would wish for bigger wheels, more suspension travel and better standing up ergonomics then. Any other format of motorcycle would make you cringe for those few minutes or hours. That's the essence of an ADV. It's not a motorcycle that makes you smile the widest, it's a motorcycle that makes you cringe the least. It's a dream compromise, not a dream motorcycle.
Wow!! That was sublime. The understanding you'll guys have of motorcycles. The nuances of different types of bikes and riders you'll delve into. Magical!!! It's like listening to a MasterChef speak about food. Brilliant. Keep up the good work. I hope you do very very well in 2023 and the years to come. Hope the quality you'll are dishing out for real enthusiasts rubs off on all the low quality stuff out there today. You'll are at least 10 levels above any other motoring RUclips channel. 👍👍👍👍
How’s the ADAS tech on your V4S shumi? Do you think it should be introduced as a safety feature on the 390cc and above class? Is it the 2022 version? I’ve always wanted the radar based auto braking - helps while you’re doing long distance touring like cruise control while being in the Zen state!12:46 the Skyhook suspension is another one of those reasons 1
Utterly useless. The calibrations do not work for India and even at the near setting adaptive cruise slows down for *everything*. If I had an option, I would not pay for this system in India. The rest of the bike is CRAZY GOOD... including the electronic suspension.
Are there any Advs coming from TVS or Bajaj ? 🤔 I mean they have G310GS and Adv250 with them respectively. They could work around those & bring in an entry level Adv to their portfolio
Another major point in why we love ADVs is because most places still have bad roads, wether it's potholes or unexpected road repairs or bumpers,l, it's better to have an ADV that can take it rather than the spine damaging cruiser feeling or the fear of breaking something on a normal motorcycle. That peace of mind and the safety it comes with is a big seller even for daily commuters.
Seriously, have I started listening to vehicle podcast instead of a beat music during my gym sessions? Yup, this is so addictive @Karthikeya Singhi and @Shumi. Love you guys. ❤️
Great educational video. This is what I want from experience guys like you to make such videos, so Indians can understand and differentiate motorcycle category.
Ah, gentlemen, gentlemen. I thoroughly enjoyed that chat, per usual. I agree, if you needed one bike to rule 'em all, and with Baja Designs, in the darkness bind them, ADVs rule. Bad LOTR references aside, I own three bikes - an 850 GSA for everything, and I mean everything, an XP with the rally kit that I keep parked at Big Rock, and a 2014 Triumph Bonneville for those times you want that sweet burble and that faux 1960s je ne sais quoi. The funny thing is, I came to the mid - GSA by way of my old, very well-used, high mileage Tiger 800, and I completely expected to want the 1250, but I found that I was perfectly happy with the 850. Anyway, the point of this rambling discourse, if indeed there is one , is to say that yes, ADVs can and do do it all. And you don't always need the biggest.
Happy new year guys. The Indian market is now spoilt for choice in most bike segments. That's a good thing. Healthy competition is always better for business. I think the only manufacturer lagging behind in the ADV segment is Bajaj.
We think there are many still left to enter the Adv space. The most glaring omission, perhaps, is TVS who've been racing in the dirt for literally decades without offering a dirt bike/adv of any sort to riders.
@@motorinc Indian manufacturers are a different story. All we are shown are concepts. TVS will only add features to their existing bikes for the time being lol.
@@prashantsharma9779 I would not dismiss TVS that easily. They're thorough, but it makes them slow too. And as far as I can remember, none of them have shown an adv even as a concept, including TVS.
The Yezdi Adventure -- Shumi insists -- doesn't count. It's poorly made and finished and the 334cc engine (across all the models) needs lots of work to refine first.
I am not a off-road rider at all. But I am a rider and understands how physics works...well for the most part. I went from leh to tso moriri on a rented classic 350. That was my 1st off-road experience...and I think I did fairly well...
Classic 350s do surprisingly well off-road.. and as Shumi likes to say, everything goes off-road... some well and other's badly. But a purpose built off-road capable motorcycle allows you to have fun while the suffering is happening
Being a ktm adv owner this connects so well . Able to see over the cars damn it's a boon it is almost synonumus to SUVs . Live in Delhi NCR so commuting (bad roads)and my touring has not been more comfortable and peaceful . Great video always pleasure watching you gentlemen.
That would be to make the suspension a bit more softer probably a seat height to be as small as himalyan being just 5'5ish gets me into some tricky situation sometimes but yes it takes some leg muscle and skills to manage the seat height. There are definitely more things that one can demand but at this price point the things that they are offering are best suited to almost all my needs. I was waiting for a himalyan 450 but the delayed dead lines got me to a decision to go with ktm but yes it is hell of a bike that brings a smile to my face every time I ride it.
I was so convinced that buying an H411 would be the fun thing to enjoy this year. But the fact that shumi is so sure that H450 won't or can't disappoint us is making me wait for it 🙂
@motorinc Do you think that Bajaj and TVS should try their hand on Adventures. With their tried and tested engines for Dominar 400cc and RR310 also the RTR 200 4v.?
I absolutely love watching you two! Y'all could describe the process of photosynthesis and that'd be worth binging over too! Two of my favourite journalists coming together in such format is what I could have only dreamt of in this era of hyped up reviews and what nots. Really appreciate the slow place and the chemistry you two share!
My experience of riding Ducati scrambler- it pretty much does what an ADV does without the wind protection. I got used the wind blast and now enjoy decent 3 digit speed and worry free riding through different road conditions
Recently came across the videos, and they all are phenomenal. The conversations are interesting on their own; the friendly nature, pacing, and passion makes is just so much more. Love the colour and overall aesthetic of the set as well. I think the team behind it all deserves more praise that my words can provide. I have a small nitpick, which is just me, but I get distracted by all the props on Shumi's right whenever the camera is on him. That breaks the flow of the conversation for me. But, that's just me. Also, I absolutely love the aesthetic on Karthik's side. The bike, the high mounted rack of helmets, even the chair colour is spot on. And, is it just me, or Karthik sits way too snug and comfortable in his chair? I wish my chair was that comfortable.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear you are enjoying the conversation. As for the distractions.. we’ll mix things up. Singhee does seems laid back in more ways than one huh! 😁
I feel at home when I listen to you guys talking about bikes and stuff relating to biking.. I've been an admirer of kartikeya sir. I love his work his ideals.. I also am a huge fan of you, Shubhabrata sir but i find you a little intimidating. I really hope that one day I will get to meet with you guys. Please remember this comment, as when I meet you I'll say Im Knight from the comment box.
We're all slightly intimidated by Shumi and admirers of Kartikeya... so you're not alone. On the flip side, they're super good to work with and so easy to talk to once you get over the feelings!
@@motorinc Wow that was nice to hear. I really hope I'll get to meet these amazing experts who I admire much.. Maybe in the next IBW I'll be able to meet them. Thank you making content like this.. keep up the good work.
Listening to both of you, I'm also hopefulthat we will get better ADVs this year. Not an ADV fan here but I am eager to see if something is able to change my mind........
The ADV market in India still has so much space to grow! Practically speaking we have three nearly there advs (Xpulse 200, Himalayan, 390Adv); Just wish manufacturers can make a sub-220kg, twin-cylinder, 55bhp/50nm torque bike that can cruise comfortably at 120kmph, preferably with a tubeless spoke-wheel setup that has adjustable suspension with a GC of 200mm or more... That would be my instant purchase!
The fact that 80-90% of your riding on an ADV bike in India would be on proper roads(and I mean proper, pot-holes and depression free roads) makes them the "jack of all trades", which is the most appealing aspect for potential [middle-class] buyers -- as having one bike to... ride them all(!?) means money well spent. Be it the VStrom 250, Yezdi Adv, Himalayan, KTM 250 and even the Hero XPulse, the entry barrier in ADV segment is super competitive and almost all bikes are good-great on roads. Ultimately the buying decisions boil down to how well the remaining 10-20% technical off-roading a bike can tackle. Took a test ride of all aforementioned bikes, all felt quite competitive and good for me, but ultimately I ended up buying the VStrom 250 becasue of its fantastic engine, highway touring abilities, good tractability on low speeds and the occasional off-roading I might have to do with it, if it wasn't available I'd have probably gone for Hero XPulse. But yeah fully agreed with both of your points about ADV segment, especially in India. Great topic to kick off the year with! Can't wait for next episode!
22:51 exactly my thought! That low end torque is a great utility in traffic! Even on my V-Strom 250 (which I brought because Shumi recommended 😅)! Very happy with the purchase 🤌🏼 Edit: speeds for VS250 1st gear: 8kmph. 2nd gear: 12kmph. 3rd gear: 16kmph.... Literally no input and bike just glides
Just went through this podcast and it was music to ears...the completeness u guys share with each other is fabulous...also the part where I am holding myself back to get CB500X is truly justified in this podcast.. it's there but not yet to the finish line..saddle around 100-110kmph and frisk it to 150's is something CB500X convincingly is what I believe...
What about the newly updated adv 390, have they worked on suspension or have just put on spoke wheels. Do let me know if you happen to get one for test ride.
COUNTERPOINT: I like large speedometers (lcd screens) Reasons is it’s difficult to see numbers while you are riding fast etc.. and dial formats gives you speed based on your knowledge of approximate level of the needle and to be frank we actually don’t need the speed number just a guesstimate.. and it’s easier on the eyes Also there can be visual clues for riding modes based on colour It hasn’t happened yet but hope to see full navigation system integrated (not turn-by-turn ) - as for size of the map on screen they should think about making it slight larger than smartwatch maps( both apple and android wear os I hate to say it but budget 2w evs are getting it and at the very top end .. It’s r&d heavy investment - maybe but could be applied for all ranges And to what extent large….. 🤔 I think the car industry is seeing and yet not recognising the limit they can use the large digital instrument cluster .. it’s only useful space is the area left in between the steering wheel.. rest is not necessary Similarly for bike it may vary from format to format eg retro - round (eg: tiger 660 neoretro), street naked - horizontally stretched and adv-squarish rectangles Hoping to get shumi’s view on this
Why is this a counterpoint? You're absolutely right. Easy to see instruments (without any specific tech) is just basic. And if a Rs 1.5 lakh EV can do full screen navigation, there's no reason why a ICE twice that price should not be able to.
@@motorinc Well shumi meant that bigger screens are gimmicky and 100inch lcd and all.. That's why 99%of the riding is purely engine, chassis, engineering etc and I agree but these come under 1% of nice-to-have features
Please consider a Q&A session on touring. I'm sure a lot of people out there have googled and collected some data from different websites. It will be good if everyone gets the right info.
Owner of an R15 v2 and did 48,000 km in the 1st year. Toured on it from Ahmedabad to Shimla with no sweat(vlog on my channel) Planning to upgrade confused between a sports tourer and adv, as the video says 2023 will open the floodgates waiting for it… Every minute spent on my motorcycle is a cherished one.
Hey MotorINC, would it be possible to start including (or creating separate playlists) for some Behind the Scenes content. Would love to see the making and abstractions behind these conversations as well. Also, the production value is increasing and would also love to see if you can include some of that in the description maybe? (Simple stuff like mic setup and such) Loving the format, keep it coming!
Just tell us what you'd like to know and we'll get right on it. Adding more and more to the description is not the way to make things simpler for everyone, we believe.
@@motorinc My bad, I should have been clearer. I meant adding some of it to the description just as a start to see if its something people want (I know I do) and then figuring out more comprehensive ways to do it. Clogging the description isn't the best way to do it, I agree. My personal ask for now? Would love to learn a little more about the mic setup, that is allowing such audio (in an unprocessed room, I am assuming). Also, in terms of behind the scenes, would just love to see some of the conversational detours that may have been cut to keep the end video tight.
I feel like we've been waiting for the Xpulse 400 and Himalyan 450 for ages. But maybe that's because I'm looking to buy a bike now. What's your opinion in the GS 310? Suspension and other stuff is better than 390, and power is just enough by the Shumi ADV Criterion(TM).
It's a decent buy, but the service is quite bit more expensive than it should be for its class. Power? It's juuuust enough. We'd rather have some more. But on all other fronts, it's a good motorcycle
@@motorinc I think it's the flaws of the 390 and GS 310's service network which make the allure of 450 just so much more. And petition to make Shumi ADV Criterion(TM) a thing.
Hey Guys, Firstly great podcasts coming through at the start of the new year!! Secondly just a advice needed-First motorcycle after a old pulsar, is the V-Strom 250 good enough because I have test ridden nearly 10-15 bikes at this point and the V-Strom just felt 🤌🤌
Happy New Year y'all! It's great to hear all these perspectives about ADVs and why are they becoming more and more popular these days. Do you think there is a certain amount of cushioning that is leading youngsters to ADVs? ADVs as motorcycles are designed like you said for roads and off-roads. With the off-road ability do manufacturers also consider possibilities of falls and crashes? And they design ADVs to handle those falls better? Do you think having this cushion of "the motorcycle can handle a crash better" or in other words "this is solid built and will not break easily even if I fall" is driving youngsters subconsciously towards the ADV market?
We don't think any serious motorcyclist (and the manufacturer R&Ds have many) think of crashing as a precept to design around, no. But we think the adv rider mindset accepts crashes more easily than other formats -- it's less of a crisis. So Advs, especially the ones wearing a house-worth of plumbing around them may actually crash better, but we don't believe that's the reason riders are liking them
Super conversation. Enjoyed it a lot. Here are two comments and a question. Comment 1: @shu_mar your point about an old man’s motorcycle format being the one to power the youth and the sport in India is spot on. But the reasons for it are quite simple I think. a.) Here we start our automotive lives on two wheels. So even by the time we are at our mid to late twenties we are far more experienced than most westerners who start with cars and come to motorcycles for pleasure alone. Experience = wisdom. Compared to westerners, we in India get sorted much earlier as to what we need in bikes. b.) We all begin here in a format (that used to be) called “standards”. The upright seating position and the pegs at right angles to our thighs; this is our default when we start out. The only thing missing in standard bikes is the high seating. But that missing ingredient aside, we in India undoubtedly have had exposure to ideal riding ergonomics which westerners have to come to discover thru trial and error later into their riding lives. I was 25 when I first got to ride a Honda CBR 600F4i. Literally just two minutes in, I said no thanks. The weight on my wrists; the pain in my neck (as I kept my head cocked from that crouch); and the cramped seating; all big negatives for me. The important thing was that I knew for certain that there was a different motorcycle format available that will make me feel comfortable and I had the wisdom at that age to know that comfort matters more than style and swag. My American friends couldn’t get their heads around that concept until they all turned 40. Now I get emails saying I was right. Comment 2: You guys didn’t talk much about weight as a parameter of consideration in Advs. I say this because @shu_mar himself has admitted how reduced weight just translates to ek dum sukhoon through and through. I am still waiting for that Adv that gives me huge road presence without the huge weight. Question: Is the VStrom 650 also doing away with the VTwin engine? We thought that was what was being tested until Suzuki pulled out the 800 DE. At EICMA, all indications were that the new 800 filled a gap in the line up between the 650 and the 1050 and that the earlier Stroms were going to remain with their VTwins. Is that not the case? Are the 650 and the 1050 too going parallel twin in 2023? Also is that 1050 ever coming here? I ask because many of the 650 guys will blindly buy the 1050 without as much as a TR. Suzuki has a captive market; at least as much as markets for big bikes go in India.
1. Ideal ergos: We are very very reluctant to generalise with words like ideal because the next question we find ourselves facing is... for whom? Are upright ergos usually good for most people sure? Would Shumi trade the riding position of his ultra-sporty Tuono or even more committed (ex)R6? No! They do a job (rather well!) and he had to learn to become stronger to exploit that riding position. Singhee, similarly, loves the riding position of his 'Bush and it isn't upright by any stretch of the imagination. 2. Weight: Since we're not carrying them around, a lot of the weight-centric discussion is basically the precursor to the question of how would we deal with it. The answer? Skill and practice. Tiny humans ride the fastest horses as well as the fastest motorcycles. They're hardly ever stopped by the weight -- they learn to use the engine and body position to deal with it. If they can? So can we. They must master it to win. We must learn enough to ride! Vstrom: Yes, we joked about it being the new P-Strom too! But what we'd like to see is all three on sale here. The V-Strom 650's built a fertile base for Suzuki and the only criticism of the (lovely) 1000 that was sold earlier was that it looked dull... now fixed with the squared off design
@@motorinc well said. Agreed with 1.) and 2.). From where I stand without the burdens of journalistic responsibility, I guess I have the luxury of playing fast and loose w.r.t sweeping generalisations. Thanks for catching me on it. Lovely show and amazing channel. I look forward to every conversation between you two. Just can’t (yet) wrap my mind around Karthikeya 2.0 with his new calmness and his sudden sense of being circumspect with his choice of words. This is going to take some getting used to.
I have been looking at road & offroad based mid segment advs for a while now. Vstorm has been ruling that market for some time now. Hope to get a updated version where there are more riding modes. What are you thoughts on the competition it would face from the likes of Transalp 750, trk 700, xcape 650? Hoping all of them are equally good on roads as well
The Transalp should be excellent (but pricing is an unknown). But honestly, the Vstrom is just smashing and very hard to match or beat. It'll be awesome if the Chinese-Italians can beat the Suzuki
"Everybody does off-road, I just come second instead of first" Is it really the case? I went solo to some place and there was a section I thought I can get over but fear got the better of me and I ended up being stuck in the middle of section and just somehow got the bike back. And yes, I did see even a scooty at the other side of the section. What do you think?
Rule One of riding off-road, Sanket, is you never go alone. Too many ways to injure yourself in a minor way and then strand yourself in a major way and have a very bad outcome as a result.
@@motorinc I agree and learnt it fortunately in a not so hard way. But there can still be small unplanned off-road sections and I feel off-roading is a good and less dangerous way to learn.
Excellent as always and thanks for this. I had no clue about the 390 Adventure 2025 and Himalayan 450 Dakar. Perfect description for Big Wing. May I also add that ADVs are also inherently safer. The ability to easily hammer through a rough patch or pothole(s) which suddenly come up on an otherwise good road is a safety feature. Braking hard on a street bike or a scooter and looking at a SUV or a truck closing in rapidly in the mirrors isn't a good sight. They usually won't slow down for such patches and I have had to hammer through because I didn't think that the guy would slow down in time to avoid hitting me. Ridiculously dangerous on highways.
I remember meeting Kartikeya at an open day at my school last year. I remember my conversation with him about buying an ADV as my first bike one day being the best part of that day. I mentioned I was looking at the Xpulse 200 back then and you said it would be a great beginner ADV. Fingers crossed that the upcoming ADV movement is still strong when I'm able to finance one for myself.🤞
I just love how subtly these guys dive into the deep. Just the one which I demanded. You guys are amazing. Keep giving these type of podcasts. Love you guys. Next topic suggestion, practical ways of touring long distance on Indian roads by motorcycles.
I always wanted an adv but now when I'm looking the market I'm confused bw z900 and a versys 650...even though prices are different I'm considering only these two as my options which should I go for...currently I own an r15v2 (commuter) and use my re classic 500 for my long rides...so I'm planning to buy a bigger bike as my next bike...
What do you intend to do with them? Chances are the more you want to do, the more the Versys will make sense. If it's just riding on the weekend and the odd highway run with friends, the Z900 will do that pretty easily. Watch for the prices of Kawasaki service -- they're quite expensive
Thanks! That was insightful. I know you discourage the fear of seat height but the one on the current KTM 390 adv is just too intimidating! The mention of next gen KTM 390 Adv with manageable seat height on updated frame, was a good aspect to learn. Sure, many Indians with buying goal as 2025 will definitely consider this version. Hope with this one KTM will do away with exclusivity, treat us as ordinary consumers and do not come up with “Non adjustable goodies, India only!” Offer. 😇
Whatever you choose to fear... will haunt you until you face it. Our suggestion is always the same -- think of it as one more thing to learn. Learning to balance a bicycle was also intimidating, and you didn't let it stop you. What's a mere seat height?
@@motorinc thanks for the encouragement! Will try on something like Xpulse and gradually the 390 as well. An upright tourer is definitely on my radar. Will work on my shortcomings until my buying goal arrives.
Can we have a segment in next podcast talking about upcoming sports tourers and neo retro bikes in India in 2023 plzz Also Happy New Year Guys. And If you want to scale the podcast then add bits of Hindi too. Kuch frk toh pdega viewership में.
Viewership isn’t the goal. The goal is to make you think and have a better time with your cars and motorcycles. We won’t do _anything_ purely for viewership. As to sports tourers - advs make the best sport tourers. But we hear you - suggestion noted!
@@motorinc please don’t make the mistake of adding Hindi proverbs synonyms slangs. The South will get isolated. Now, in English, both the South and North can understand you
This podcast makes me wanna save for a 450cc+ ADV for my tours. Currently I do it on a Yamaha FZ V3. I mostly cruise around 85-95 and has done around 600kms per day in 4 of them. Havnt thought about upgrading until now...And yes, I get overtaken by almost everyone on the highways LOL. But, hey I am moving!!
Um... that was the whole episode? To us the Himalayan & the Scram are roughly the same bike. So whatever they said about the 450 will probably translate to the Scram too... just a matter of time
Update: the Ducati test rider Shumi refers to is Andrea Rossi (andreacicarossi on instagram). He's promised to not get distracted by instagram handles going forward 😊
Thank you!
Had tried every possible permutation and combination (Andrea/Andreas Cairossi/Cairosi/kairossi/carosi/caroci) but couldn't narrow it down!

Haha! Too funny you are Bharath!
So for which bike are you saving the money for ?
YOLO
As an American this was a super interesting look into the Indian domestic motorcycle market. Very engaging discussion.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian!
Thank you for watching Arun! Glad this makes sense to you!
I don't know what other people think but personally I loved the minimalist ,subtle look and feel of the videos, don't make it too much cluttery , specially the background
Thanks for the feedback Mrinmoy! The aesthetics team will receive your input immediately!
♥️
Happy new year guys! There is no better way to start the new year than talking about ADVs. I say that because I just upgraded to my first big bike which is the V-Strom 650. This is the bike that will give me a go-anywhere ability (within reason) without scaring me with too much power or a huge size. It checks all the right boxes for me - it gives me great cruisability on the highway without breaking a sweat, comfortable ride quality and spot-on weight distribution. Whats not to like about ADVs! :)
Happy new year Rohit! So good to hear you're enjoying your motorcycle! And it's true. We are fans of the VStrom 650 too!
The origins of Adv explained from 4:00 mins is best part of this episode for me. More such stories of the origins of bike segments would be so awesome and interesting!
Thanks for that suggestion! ❤️
Ability to see over the cars is just amazing.
Helps judge situation ahead.
No1 shares it really. Kudos you mentioned it @shumi
Thanks Aman! And the more we can see, the better we can decide what to do next!
You guys made me live my initial days when I started riding tiger in 2016, that feel of being on suv on two wheels, seeing and passing through the traffic easily.
Even touching on heavy bikes in offroad trails, still people over here don't get it, have seen them dropping their costly bikes on trails running road tyres
I took correct path with xpulse for honing my skills on tiger, later tried g310gs which came out to be jack of all trade master of none before enjoying the real mx with KTM sfx350, hope things will change soon and we will get entire spectrum of bikes and people will realize that best garage is always current number of bikes +1.
Such a great insight and you're so right. Step by step is the right way. Hopefully, those who fell at least learnt something in the process, right?
I currently ride a splendor plus that i built during COVID as a retro commuter cafe racer kinda and have been saving up for the Himalayan 450 from last 2 years😊
Excellent decision! Prepare for the spending to begin Indrajeet!
Haha, amazing podcast! Shumi, when in his zone, talking his mind, is such a treat to watch. :)
Couldn't agree more! Glad you enjoyed that! Now you turn: what would you like to see on ThisConnect next?
Freedom! Exactly! Thanks for sharing here man!
Hi dude how is it going I am also planning to get a adv 390 as my very first bike would love to know your experience with it😊
@belch1693 its amazing... it has its flaws.. not that great in bumper to bumper traffic rides.. suspension feels stiff in cities.. frequent front fork oil leaks.. but still you'll fall in love with it.. take it out on highways and you'll know why many riders love the adv.. if you're planning to get one.. get the him450 now or if you can wait for a year , watch out for the new face lift of 390adv, but it'll come in 2025 , a proper upgrade
@@chalonish I think the sw would be better since it has the adjustable suspension.
I actually want the thrill and speed of ktm which the himalayan lacks🌚
@@belch1693 get SW only if you're into hardcore off-roading.. you'll get spoked wheels, but you'll lose the pleasure tubeless tyres
Love this format of a casual chat..feel like Shumi is sharing his thoughts right in front of me..❣️
Thanks Sumeet!
Cheers!!
Exactly! And we believe that the gap will start filling in starting this year
I ride an NS125 (first motorcycle and also the one I began my riding journey on) but what got me into motorcycles was the Adventure Touring class and as an enthusiast motorcyclist this video is like a pot of gold for me so big thanks for that
Also, the NS has helped me find my style of riding wherein I'm comfortable and happy so this is definitely going to help me add that first ADV Tourer into my garage but a few years down the line where I hope India as a market is at a much better place when it comes to this class of machines
Best of luck Soham!
Roads in India compliment ADV, even companies can research and develop their products here for other parts of the world including India as well.
Watching the video in oct 24, with KTM 390 adv 2025 varieents almost fully leaked. And I am surprised to see how much schumi was right about the 390 adv for 2025.
Well done !
Fantastic!
This is something what I admire,
Great energy,
I bought an ADV by listening to Shumi in PD, that proved to be one of the best decisions ever!
Others should listen to this and consider ADVs seriously.
Great job, thoroughly enjoyed it!
Wow! That's awesome Prabhanjan! Thank you!
You both were correct about the Himalayan 450. RE is less likely to screw it up, but as Karthikeya said, I am too protecting myself emotionally before its launch. Great podcast as usual guys, Kudos.
Haha! Protectionists unite!
@@motorinc 😆
I hope I'm wrong but I don't think they will reduce the weight of the 450 by a huge margin compared to 411.
I think we need an updated adv 1hour video again please guys 😢😢
Anybody has a link/reference to the offroad film that Shumi mentions at 27:43 ?
There’s many. Just look for MultiStrada V4 promo film featuring off-roading on the Ducati official YT channel
It's awesome that you're enjoying your motorcycle Pradeep! If we're not mistaken, that was Shumi as well no?
The sheer passion with which you speak when Karthik sir ask you a question or when you set off leaves me in awe. It's like your trying to tell us everything and take us there while being concise. Sometimes i wish i could just download it all and view it through your eyes⚡
👀 Neuralink is still a few years away. Until then - let’s ThisConnect!
Nuff said.
We have our fingers crossed and our hearts braced too! Soon, we hope. But, never soon enough. 😁
@@motorinc May be the Kawasaki KLR650? Just saying😁
This podcast, one word, INSIGHTFUL 👌
You guys have made me wanna have a resolution in 2023, even when I said no to em. Now please guide the likes of me to pick the right ADV 😆.

Looking forward to a video on it 😊
Good idea! Thank you Yogesh! This is on our idea board too now!
Absolutely!
28:13 here's where Vstrom 250 makes Sense.
also at vfm proposition, Suzuki is offering attractive offers on it (I've visited 2 showrooms in my city, & took a test ride).
Nice! 🖖🏽
Happy New Year, guys. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience about ADV and congrats for an awesome video.
Thank you Darwin!
Haha! Nicely put. But we'll still say motorcycles are about the smiles, not the lack of cringing
what a beautiful conversation. thanks you both
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Did you wake up and just decide to make our day? Thank you so much!
That is so good to hear! Thank you very much!
In fact, we don't think he's turned the radar in a few months now! 🤦🏽♂️
Are there any Advs coming from TVS or Bajaj ? 🤔
I mean they have G310GS and Adv250 with them respectively. They could work around those & bring in an entry level Adv to their portfolio
Could? Yes. Should? Absolutely. Would? Erm...
100 inch TV handling is pretty gud now a days …😂😂😂
Awesome content and the way its delivered is simply amazing..
😃 Glad you love it!
That's it! Thanks Shaurya!
Awesome podcast as ever. Happy new year to team Motor Inc. I am planning to upgrade to an ADV by end of this year. Waiting for Himalayan 450.
Awesome! Best of luck!

Great educational video. This is what I want from experience guys like you to make such videos, so Indians can understand and differentiate motorcycle category.
Thanks Hussain! Can do!
Precisely! Everyone's sweet spot varies (and it should!)
@@shu_mar so we only have the Xpulse, Himalayan and Yezdi Adventure for the time being?
Thank you Nitin! If you had the power to change one thing about your 390A, what would you change?
But the fact that shumi is so sure that H450 won't or can't disappoint us is making me wait for it 🙂
♥️
Just don’t. I own one and put 30000 km on it in 2 years across touring and city and while I love it for its balance of everything at low speeds (
@motorinc Do you think that Bajaj and TVS should try their hand on Adventures. With their tried and tested engines for Dominar 400cc and RR310 also the RTR 200 4v.?
Absolutely! It's past due! Whether they use current engines, retune them or build new ones we're not sure. All three have pros and cons.
I absolutely love watching you two! Y'all could describe the process of photosynthesis and that'd be worth binging over too! Just readying the script here! 😁
My experience of riding Ducati scrambler- it pretty much does what an ADV does without the wind protection. I got used the wind blast and now enjoy decent 3 digit speed and worry free riding through different road conditions
This was an excellent podcast…
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent podcast Shumi and Kartikeya. So many good points covered in it. Thank you 🙏

It doesn't have to change your mind, TBH. If it opens your mind to larger and more possibilities... we got a win!

Congratulations on the ride! Are you planning to dabble in off-roading?
@@motorinc Yeah wouldn't mind the occasional beaten path or hidden gems.
Great video … again ! Loving the relevant topics being discussed on thisconnect. Keep it coming 💣
Thanks Autologue! We're so happy you are liking what you're seeing!
Any thoughts on the new 2023 KTM Adventure 390 with the adjustable suspension and the spoked wheels ?
Soon!
Absolutely loved watching it. It was so peaceful and calming to just listen to you two chat.
We love that you the MotorInc vibe Saurabh!
22:51 exactly my thought! That low end torque is a great utility in traffic! Even on my V-Strom 250 (which I brought because Shumi recommended 😅)! Very happy with the purchase 🤌🏼
Edit: speeds for VS250 1st gear: 8kmph.
Thank you Abhijit! Glad you enjoyed the episode!
So we should wait to get that optimal adv that we have just got glimpses of until now ??
Depends on how urgent your need for an adv is. Because by the end of this year, we are pretty sure we'll have a much larger menu to pick from
What about the newly updated adv 390, have they worked on suspension or have just put on spoke wheels. Do let me know if you happen to get one for test ride.
KTM's communication doesn't specify any changes to the suspension TBH. We don't expect to see anything more than a minor tuning tweak if at all TBH
Gosh, you guys look so "at home"... I like the vibe, I am happy you started this channel...
Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️
COUNTERPOINT: I like large speedometers (lcd screens)
Reasons is it’s difficult to see numbers while you are riding fast etc.. and dial formats gives you speed based on your knowledge of approximate level of the needle and to be frank we actually don’t need the speed number just a guesstimate.. and it’s easier on the eyes
Also there can be visual clues for riding modes based on colour
It hasn’t happened yet but hope to see full navigation system integrated (not turn-by-turn ) - as for size of the map on screen they should think about making it slight larger than smartwatch maps( both apple and android wear os
I hate to say it but budget 2w evs are getting it and at the very top end .. It’s r&d heavy investment - maybe but could be applied for all ranges
And to what extent large….. 🤔 I think the car industry is seeing and yet not recognising the limit they can use the large digital instrument cluster .. it’s only useful space is the area left in between the steering wheel.. rest is not necessary
Similarly for bike it may vary from format to format eg retro - round (eg: tiger 660 neoretro), street naked - horizontally stretched and adv-squarish rectangles
Hoping to get shumi’s view on this
Why is this a counterpoint? You're absolutely right. Easy to see instruments (without any specific tech) is just basic. And if a Rs 1.5 lakh EV can do full screen navigation, there's no reason why a ICE twice that price should not be able to.
@@motorinc Well shumi meant that bigger screens are gimmicky and 100inch lcd and all.. That's why
99%of the riding is purely engine, chassis, engineering etc and I agree but these come under 1% of nice-to-have features
wow such a great moto channel. kepp posting like this.
need more stuff on adv/tourer bikes and sedan, lifestyle cars
Thanks, will do!
Please consider a Q&A session on touring. I'm sure a lot of people out there have googled and collected some data from different websites. It will be good if everyone gets the right info.
Good idea! Can do!
+1
Owner of an R15 v2 and did 48,000 km in the 1st year. Toured on it from Ahmedabad to Shimla with no sweat(vlog on my channel) Planning to upgrade confused between a sports tourer and adv, as the video says 2023 will open the floodgates waiting for it…
Every minute spent on my motorcycle is a cherished one.
That last line! Wow!
Honda CB500X - The BIG - WINGS or the Tuareg 660 - Aprilia, KTM 890 , till then even the Xpulse 400 will do for this year :) Amazing episode again !!!
Thanks Chetan!
Hey MotorINC, would it be possible to start including (or creating separate playlists) for some Behind the Scenes content. Would love to see the making and abstractions behind these conversations as well.
Also, the production value is increasing and would also love to see if you can include some of that in the description maybe? (Simple stuff like mic setup and such)
Loving the format, keep it coming!
But it's not a True ADV 💔
Yes! Shumi always says go with that feeling! And from an old Pulsar (assuming its a 150) it'll be a nice upgrade on all fronts too!
You guys are the Sadguru of motorcycles 😂 🙌🏻❤️
Great podcast ❤️
Thank you Pradyumna! ❤
Actually they are Acharya Prashants of Motorcycles, as they're making sense !
So Advs, especially the ones wearing a house-worth of plumbing around them may actually crash better, but we don't believe that's the reason riders are liking them
little late to the comment section but wanted to know if a throttle lock as a jugaad cruise control is a good idea. for interceptor 650
We do not believe _anything_ that intereferes with the throttle can be a good idea
How do i send some of my stuff? 0:40
Seriously? That is awesome!
You aren't yanking our chain right?
@@motorinc no seriously. 🫠 I would like to see some of my art on RUclips.
Being a adv owner this did CONNECT well ....this was an amazing episode , looking for more content
Thanks Sachin! That's awesome!
"Everybody does off-road, I just come second instead of first"
Is it really the case?
Great taste in art as well. I spy Homeword Bound by Hari Panicker behind shumi!
A certain Mr Akash in team MotorInc would be thrilled to read your comment!
Hey Shantanu! For sure - that added ability gives a lot more confidence in our conditions.
People are finally understanding why they are useful
Yeah! No other format we know allows the latitude of an adventure tourer!
I discovered your channel a few days ago. Been loving it so far. Which shoes is Shumi wearing in this video?
Thanks Shubham! We believe that's a pair of RS Taichi riding shoes
What do you guys think about the cfmoto 650mt? it has power and torque slightly above the versys and yet its 3 lakhs cheaper
Finance is, for most people, just a matter of time. Our financial prowess, by and large, _must grow with time_!
Hey Advait! Good to hear from you! I’m there whenever you are ready. Will see you around at school.
Love the new setup..although I think mayyyybe there could be a poster kinda thing somewhere..not pressing..
Press on! Look how you moved us around by doing exactly that…
I just love how subtly these guys dive into the deep. Just the one which I demanded. You guys are amazing. Keep giving these type of podcasts. Love you guys. Next topic suggestion, practical ways of touring long distance on Indian roads by motorcycles.
All that we want to say - right back at you - ❤️❤️!
What a topic to start the new year with 👏🏼.
Cheers!
Can you please share the ODO of Sumi's Duke and Karthi's Impulse?
Why Nik? 😊
I have clocked 45k in my D400 2019 and planning to upgrade. So finding a reason to stick to it for a few more years😂🙏
Can we have a segment in next podcast talking about upcoming sports tourers and neo retro bikes in India in 2023 plzz
Also Happy New Year Guys.
Now, in English, both the South and North can understand you
Coffee, Morning assessment & This-connect ❤❤❤
Gooood morning indeed!
Another powerful reason: when you get overtaken... you're less safe than if you were overtaking! Best of luck Rajkishan!
These men just don't review bikes... They live bikes... So thankful to God for having manufactured such people...
Nice! Us too!
Does RE Scram will be considered as a adventure bike , do give us your mind about scram and RE upcoming adv bikes
Um... that was the whole episode? To us the Himalayan & the Scram are roughly the same bike. So whatever they said about the 450 will probably translate to the Scram too... just a matter of time
