'Rationally recognize the Irrational part of your purchase' - such a Schumi thing but it holds so true and very well ended onto this one.. yeah if you wanna understand the Indian market.. this is it.. we dont care for crazy numbers or spec sheets.. ( i mean we do care for that thats why we are good in Math and CEOs of most of the world giants) but how quick can u sell us the car is what drives our purchasing decision.. we are that market.. shameless and irrational whether u like it or not.. another point I would highlight is we dont have just 1 type or people.. we essentially can be classified as 3 different classes.. the rural and semi urban (tier 3, and below) people who's education for the numbers game is almost negligible so even if Honda or TVS makes the exact same Splendor and call it Blender or Dender.. terrible names but u get the point that the buyers will still go for Splendor because household HERO is associated with it.. and to topple the Splendor we need to do what TATA is doing with their hatchbacks.. the aftersales is shit but it found out a key differentiator that it created norms and practically is now a standard even recognized by the govt.. so TVS, HONDA and others find something which Splendor doesnt and make your marketing team rub their asses for 24/7 these are i would say 90% of the population but have very less significance for GDP and growth.. hence mass produced bikes are the rage to tap into them tier 2 are educated but lack the purchasing power to go for higher displacements.. so they are the guinea pigs.. they will try GIXXERs, Ronins and god forbid the Highness.. but these are less in number so to appeal to those is a double edge sword but at the same time these people if they like your product they will influence the tier 3 people that there is a new comer and i have tested it and we can check the next gen of it. these are i would say the remaining 9.5-9.8% because here the consumer is graduated from tier 3 so its new and exciting.. very much and about 50% contri to GDP so good market but undecided one.. and key is undecided so whatever u throw if other OEM gives just 1 more feature for the same price your product is cut throat in dustbin and then we have the uber rich.. people who we always aspire to become.. super niche ultra concentrated heart driven people for whom why should i write a para.. its self-explanatory right?

Hey, i had a question. Why do you think people who buy the gixxers, ronin and Hness are the guinea pigs? I'm a newbie and i wanna understand your analysis better
One of the biggest factors while purchasing a vehicle, for an average Indian, has always been the fuel economy. Let it be a splendor, passion, alto, or a swift, one thing which is common in all is how good they are with theirs fuels. Not the “only factor” but one of the.
Yes. The interesting thing is we’ve move on there a little too. There was a time when every kmpl extra claimed made a difference to the customer. Today it appears that they have a basic minimum in mind (which changed as per segment). Once that minimum is met, the switch focus to other things. It’s a factor but it isn’t obsessive anymore
Renault 4x4 the best one they ever got , i wish they sell it again in India !!!! Amazing examples pinpoint ones :) you guys are amazing. Terrano looked better for me :) And DAMN HONDA for never getting price right and making us wait for CB500x and the 350 ADV :)
Rational thought to my irrational decision. Well that’s why I hunted the market and bought a Baleno RS in 2020 instead of buying a new Nexon… just love that torque and tractability…fun to drive…so much better stability in the corners with Yokohama shoes… But very very difficult to answer when someone asks… You bought a second hand Baleno instead of a 5-star Nexon…..WHY?!?! 🤦🏻
We would say yes. First, once we become the largest car market (later this year or something we believe is the forecast), they won't want to leave because of the size of the opportunity. Second, even if they do, they're legally liable in India to support customers for 15 years ( as opposed to 8 or 10 in most countries).
@@motorinc yes agree from ordinary blokes....but from you guys....I am fairly sure it will be more or less accurate... 😊 Yesterday's science fiction is today's reality no?
To us it’s about learning. And we believe we learn more from peeling back the layers of achievement in the past. The future is easy. That statement from Kartik about 2nd gen and 3rd gen Busa is the same reason why I bought a Honda City 4th Gen in December 2022 instead of the 5th Gen because that's the one I felt connected at the time of couple of test drives
I think knowledgeable people are selecting better product than brand or value. This is the main reason why we see creta, nexon, innova, xuv, scorpio selling in such large numbers even though they are priced premium. Today brands also know this, if they have a great product they can get away pricing it premium for this know it all customers who has already done most of the research. But I still feel many buyers who are just considering automobiles as a mode of transport their first checklist is value for money. As they are fixed on a budget and want to squeeze out the maximum features and performance in that budget. This people value discounts very much as it might allow them to purchase from a higher segment which will enhance their social status. Shumi’s words value for money ends the moment we leave the showroom floor was the main reason I listened to my heart and went and bought the CBR650R, a product many people consider as the worst value for money. 4 months down the line every time I ride the bike I tell myself thank god I listened to that podcast. 😊😊
Second para: This is where the price and value terms being interchangeable causes problems. Even people on a budget are value-conscious and not price-conscious. This can turn into "I want more features" but it usually manifests more as "I don't trust ABC brand although their pricing is nice... I seem to think that they breakdown too often [and hence are not value for money]"
Easier on the wallet is a temporary thing and emotionally deficient is a permanent thing! Wah sir wah!! Your views on Super Meteor 650? Please let me know :)
Shumi just returned from the ride experience.. but he isn't allowed to say everything he told us in public till Jan 16th night. So definitely no information to add until then...
Activa is no more a Honda product. It's has become synonyms with scooters. Indians don't buy a scooter anymore, they buy an Activa. 😂 And kartikaye, they're on 7G I think 😂
These guys are a go to.. when you want to chill.. I'm not too deep into all of it, but they are peeking my interest in automobiles.. amazing conversations which i believe are one of the most thought provoking content on RUclips. Learning a lot. Thanks. Do moree..
Such thoughtful podcast. Gotta rationalize irrational needs! Even i very recently felt in the trap of trying to convince my own self to buy cars which were “okayish” for me rather than “wow!” solely based on price vs value context. I fortunately was interjected by two close people to wait for few more months to buy my “wow” car. Keep bringing us such amazing episodes! :D
Taking about Activas, I got the 5G 4-5 years back for 66,000. My experience has been absolutely fantastic with it. It has literally never broken down on me and has to be my favourite commuter. It gets the basics right, the parts and maintenance is cheap enough(eg: the horn button is 45rupees). If you look at it it's a phenomenal piece of engineering, refined over the years to deliver what it headed out to deliver. It has it's own issues, it's not perfect, but I feel so emotional about it :D
What a lovely podcast 👌.. and the 2 sentences are the real jackpot.. Similar story, I just bought my 1st RE 350 classic desert sand, it's an irrational desire I had since ages.. cause I love speed, twisties, adventure but RE classic may do all this but not the way I want still, i ride the way i want and try to get what the machine can do and at the end of the day I look at the bulky khaki machine made of steel and it satisfy my both eyes.. it's an irrational decision I took by being very rational towards my own desire 🙃..
In terms of discounts I would like to agree with shumi on motorcyles but with cars, if you're not buying one for yourself rather for your family, I think discounts makes sense especially involving large sums.
Great podcast as always. Im still upset by the fact that by the time I started earning enough to buy a fun car both Cruze and VW Polo were gone from the market. Therapy is expensive. Saying “it is what it is” is cheap. I did buy a Shiny motorcycle (Apache rr310) for the fun of it though. So some part of me is happy.
Oh that’s easy. They’re both experts with vast experience who remain deeply in love with motorcycles and cars. That combination always creates profound joy and conversation, no?
Honestly, comparing direct with global makes no sense to us and doesn't affect how we evaluate vehicles. This is because taxation and the Indian value sensitivity are two powerful filters and many global products, as attractive as they may seem during their absence, won't work in India. If that's the cost-cutting involved? We are okay, as long as the choices the manufacturer made were smart. However, when quality/safety corners are what're cut in the name of cost? That's when it starts to raise our hackles
With respect to Toyota’s standing in India, I think they know their USP Is ‘reliability’ for which people are ready to sacrifice the interiors. Most of us Indians are still risk averse, that’s what Toyota exploits, thereby positioning it’s cars at a premium even if it doesn’t feel premium for the price.
I am brand loyal person😅😅 Bajaj in bikes Maruti in cars TVS in scooters Nokia in Mobiles. That thing goes against me sometimes as there is no product (that suits me at that time) from that particular brand when I want a new one😂😂. That's why I am not upgrading my mobile right now.
Wow! just mind blown on how simple things can become so complex. i thing you guys need to work for some university that offers courses to the c-suite of automobile companies. the points that you make are something that creeps into a buyer. THIS IS REALLY AN EPIC CHANNEL.

Great points came up in this duration.I want to ask a question that lets pick Yamaha. What on earth has made them realise that xsr155 won't be a practical bike for India where as Fzx is? If they think that Xsr155 is not practical product for India but they are getting great sales figures from mt15 where a pillion can not seat with untouched legs with the rider, then why there is Fzx in place of Xsr155 ?
Absolute on point, Honda CB500X for eg is an amazing motorcycle, I test rode it but the price it was launched at was too high which made us take step back even when it feels so good, shakes up the budget. Later they dropped the price by 1.2L and suddenly it sold numbers bcz now it became an amazing motorcycle that was affordable. Same story didn't work with the 300F, Same brand though
unconscious! Exactly! My friend is dumping on me for saying you won’t get good gloves for less than 3k bucks. Told him to get a Viaterra holeshot for the SPS and build. He says they shouldn’t cross 2000 bucks - he’s upset that he can only get a pair of fabric gloves at that price. Love the Multi standing by the side! 32:21 extremely unfair. They say all good things on video and effectively mislead. I too felt the same.
since we all love stories here , my father had a maroon hero honda cd100 ss and a red one which he used to commute to office and back both of them had chrome fenders , the he got and hf Delux and then a splendor ismart 100 all with the same 98cc parallel to the ground champs I also learned how to ride bikes on them a few crashes along the way but it always ran
suzuki really needs to bring the sv650 to india. I fking love that bike because over here it would be the porche of bikes like shumi described. a great commuter, tourer and racetrack speed demon all rolled into 1 affordable package that gives you room to grow. with our infrastructure you wont need another bike in your lifetime
Great content! Question: Ford EcoSport - created segment of it’s own, people loved it, yet Ford could never upscale and get more products. Your take on Ford and it’s exit.
Did you watch Ep 05? We believe Ford was discussed in that one. It’s either that or KaMi we’re discussing it in the office the other day… can’t remember which 🤦🏽♂️
I don't know what would the prospective buyers of cars/bikes will take from this video but I'm sure there's a lot to take for the automotive manufacturers. In my opinion, the reason for not appointing an Indian to take care of Indian subsidiary by various manufacturers was state of indigenous car/bike industry. It didn't inspire confidence in the global manufacturers.
@@motorinc Agreed on the ability part but I'm talking about the state of industry. We were nowhere near the turnover and profit figures of developed countries much lesser in size than ours. So for someone sitting in a conference room going through data sheets and PowerPoint presentation, our indigenous industry was negligible. So it was deemed as risk not worth taking.
At the end of the video. The point is make your own decision. 😂 For me what works for this channel is the feel of audio n the intro makes me watch the entire video. I am no where buying a car or a bike😅
Hero motor corp is not the company I like but wow what value for money xpulse is 💥 still needs a lot of improvements. and xpulse is my first bike 😬 its been more than 2 years and I enjoy offroad and trails more than roads 😬 hope other companies bring such bikes So I choose the product over the company. FYI hero has the worst service centers so I serviced my bike at a local mechanic. When I will buy a car in the future I need your recommendation. - Prasad
Absolutely! And we've heard tales of Hero dealers not being able to deal with more premium customers as well as other brands a bit too often for our liking
I still wonder why freestyle didn't work... Good enough looking, good build, fantastic petrol engine, hamdling is fun, decently frugal , excellent pricing... True VFM that no body cared...
It’s partly down to the weak reception to the Figo. And then the other baggage, that sat heavy on Ford’s ambitions. Although, in my personal experience - we were all set at one point to buy the EcoSport - but despite repeated requests - the dealer never got back in touch.

tier 2 are educated but lack the purchasing power to go for higher displacements.. so they are the guinea pigs.. they will try GIXXERs, Ronins and god forbid the Highness.. but these are less in number so to appeal to those is a double edge sword but at the same time these people if they like your product they will influence the tier 3 people that there is a new comer and i have tested it and we can check the next gen of it.
these are i would say the remaining 9.5-9.8% because here the consumer is graduated from tier 3 so its new and exciting.. very much and about 50% contri to GDP so good market but undecided one.. and key is undecided so whatever u throw if other OEM gives just 1 more feature for the same price your product is cut throat in dustbin
and then we have the uber rich.. people who we always aspire to become.. super niche ultra concentrated heart driven people for whom why should i write a para.. its self-explanatory right?
Nice analysis!
Hey your comment is featured on the ep 20 of podcast if you haven't you should go check it out
@@ayushman2347 hi Ayushman.. I saw the podcast. Thanks for letting me know. I get it why schumi picked it up.. 1 to mess with Karthik and 2 fascinated theory isn't it..?
Hey, i had a question. Why do you think people who buy the gixxers, ronin and Hness are the guinea pigs? I'm a newbie and i wanna understand your analysis better
i think in india we buy the car first then become brand loyal. Like we'll buy a car then defend it at all lengths(provided its not very bad).
Hahaha For the first year or so, for sure! And if it’s worth it - then it earns the loyalty!
This podcast ❤, I don't know why but I was smiling the entire time 😊
If you figure out why let us know! You know, because this was a dead serious 'cast... 😂
New frame on the backwall 👏
It connects 👍
Oh yeah! ❤️
Any car/motorcycle review in the works?
Any? No no. Many.
Review? No no. All sorts of things.
😂
Renault 4x4 the best one they ever got , i wish they sell it again in India !!!! Amazing examples pinpoint ones :) you guys are amazing. Terrano looked better for me :) And DAMN HONDA for never getting price right and making us wait for CB500x and the 350 ADV :)
Thanks Chetan! Glad you enjoyed the watch!
Rational thought to my irrational decision.
Well that’s why I hunted the market and bought a Baleno RS in 2020 instead of buying a new Nexon… just love that torque and tractability…fun to drive…so much better stability in the corners with Yokohama shoes…
But very very difficult to answer when someone asks… You bought a second hand Baleno instead of a 5-star Nexon…..WHY?!?! 🤦🏻
You did what your heart told you. Kudos!!
Should we rely on some of the foreign brands given that at least two have left the country?
We would say yes. First, once we become the largest car market (later this year or something we believe is the forecast), they won't want to leave because of the size of the opportunity. Second, even if they do, they're legally liable in India to support customers for 15 years ( as opposed to 8 or 10 in most countries).
That look @ 27:54 class !
How would you describe it? 🤪 Perplexed? Incredulous? Flabbergasted? Or just- Whaaat!
The podcast is a brilliant postmortem....expecting the next one to follow to be a forecast!
Speculations… hmmm.. isn’t that the easy bit?
@@motorinc yes agree from ordinary blokes....but from you guys....I am fairly sure it will be more or less accurate... 😊 Yesterday's science fiction is today's reality no?
To us it’s about learning. And we believe we learn more from peeling back the layers of achievement in the past. The future is easy. People have short memories and you could get away with any old thing. We’ll do forecasts only when we have something meaningful to say. Something that we believe will change something for the better for you

Great episode. I highly appreciate your efforts and the way you guys connect. I am sure many Indians will connect themselves.👍

Before you guys get started, do i spot my bike, the N250 in the studio!?
Do you Sudhi? Do you? 😂
@@motorinc Should I be excited and looking forward to any content on it?
That depends on whether it’s an N250 or not, right? Is it? 😆
@@motorinc if only i could get a glance at the indicators or the engine case at the least will i be able to confirm😆😆 . I'll be optimistic and say it is an N250!
Ah! The perfect good night snack for me. A MotorInc episode.

That statement from Kartik about 2nd gen and 3rd gen Busa is the same reason why I bought a Honda City 4th Gen in December 2022 instead of the 5th Gen because that's the one I felt connected at the time of couple of test drives
Nice going Prashant!
Really nice show!
I have never seen or heard Shumi talk about cars for this long 🤟👍🏻😃😅
Thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Glad you enjoyed it! Shumi, surprise, seems to have too! 😂
@@motorinc oh ok...cool!
Activa is no more a Honda product. It's has become synonyms with scooters. Indians don't buy a scooter anymore, they buy an Activa. 😂
And kartikaye, they're on 7G I think 😂
Only 7G! Damn! 😂
Yes, it's become a generic name. Therein lie the sales and success and that, also, makes it nigh un-upgradeable for Honda
These guys are a go to.. when you want to chill.. I'm not too deep into all of it, but they are peeking my interest in automobiles.. amazing conversations which i believe are one of the most thought provoking content on RUclips. Learning a lot. Thanks. Do moree..
Thank you! Season 2 of our podcasts will be out soon.
Awesome! Let us know when the wow moment happens! Thanks!
You guys make everything very sensible guiding and opening our eyes fantastic loving this podcast content ❤️
We’re a team! We all gotta step up!
Refreshing podcast!! 👍 Job
Good to see you again! And thank you!
Congratulations Indranil! Happy for you and glad you followed your heart!
I'm not sure if it's intentional, but I like how Shumi and Karthikeya alternatively wear Onitsuka Tigers.
Haha! Not intentional at all. 😂
In terms of discounts I would like to agree with shumi on motorcyles but with cars, if you're not buying one for yourself rather for your family, I think discounts makes sense especially involving large sums.
We think Shumi meant that discounts should be welcome _after_ you have decided it's worth buying. Which isn't related to how large the discount is.
And if you're happy... we're winning!
How can these two dudes churn out such amazing conversations video after video!!
Oh that’s easy. They’re both experts with vast experience who remain deeply in love with motorcycles and cars. That combination always creates profound joy and conversation, no?
@@motorinc Amazing!
As someone who shifted from honda two wheeler (dio) to sezuki avenis.... I'm proud of not being a brand loyal customer
Is avenis good
Great episode.
Would love to hear your thoughts on "Made for India" products which are basically cost-cut global products.
Agreed Rahul. The interior materials and spec both need to come up to a higher level for the premium feels that the prices promise.
Great talk! Though what bike is it on the left?
A black one! 😆 we know, wrong answer! But take a guess first!
So many quotes by these wise guys in this video!
❤️
I am brand loyal person😅😅 Bajaj in bikes Maruti in cars TVS in scooters Nokia in Mobiles. That thing goes against me sometimes as there is no product (that suits me at that time) from that particular brand when I want a new one😂😂. That's why I am not upgrading my mobile right now.
😂😂
Wow! just mind blown on how simple things can become so complex. i thing you guys need to work for some university that offers courses to the c-suite of automobile companies. the points that you make are something that creeps into a buyer. THIS IS REALLY AN EPIC CHANNEL.
Good morning Aniruddha! Good to see we made your morning! While we negotiate the Unis, you can help by showing the podcast to people who you think will benefit from this, if you like
This channel simply works for the pace i love!!
There's no clear answer for what Yamaha does and why they do it
I never thought i would listen to moto podcasts, now im addicted
Absolute on point,
Honda CB500X for eg is an amazing motorcycle, I test rode it but the price it was launched at was too high which made us take step back even when it feels so good, shakes up the budget. Later they dropped the price by 1.2L and suddenly it sold numbers bcz now it became an amazing motorcycle that was affordable.
Same story didn't work with the 300F, Same brand though
Well said! That's _exactly_ right. The vehicle must be right before discounts should sweeten the deal
Guys you are simply the best. Period!
Thanks Himanshu! ❤️

Glad you liked it! More to come!
I completely agree with the porche Lamborghini example kartikeya gave ✌🏻

unconscious!
Okay we're having trouble understand this comment. Help?

since we all love stories here , my father had a maroon hero honda cd100 ss and a red one which he used to commute to office and back both of them had chrome fenders , the he got and hf Delux and then a splendor ismart 100 all with the same 98cc parallel to the ground champs I also learned how to ride bikes on them a few crashes along the way but it always ran

suzuki really needs to bring the sv650 to india. Just love to hear you both talking 👌
Thank you Gaurav!
That's not true. There's a wealth of ability across industries even as far back as 10 years ago.
😂 For me what works for this channel is the
feel of audio n the intro makes me watch the entire video. I am no where buying a car or a bike😅
Thank you Ravi! The point always is that you _can_ make good decisions and you should!
100% Agreed !

Hero motor corp is not the company I like but wow what value for money xpulse is 💥 still needs a lot of improvements. and xpulse is my first bike 😬 its been more than 2 years and I enjoy offroad and trails more than roads 😬 hope other companies bring such bikes
So I choose the product over the company.
😂 Wow

How about the next podcast topic being Badge Engineering? It is something that may be a bit old now to talk about in India. However it was present way before outside the Indian Market.
Next? We're not sure. But on the idea board? Yes!
Also if that can be followed by Or included with Two Manufacturers partnering on one Car/ Bike. For e.g., Triumph and Bajaj, Hero and Harley
That's a great idea too!
