UNBELIEVABLE TUNING ISSUE RESOLVED! Plus we weigh the Malibu and I was SHOCKED!

  • I was surprised what the car weights but I was even more surprised to find out what was causing a MAJOR drivability/tuning issue seemingly OVERNIGHT. Plugs looked TERRIBLY RICH… but were they? You’ll want to watch this video.

I wonder what the number is on the bad gasket. Interface makes the material and also sells the material to gasket stampers. Nitrile is used as the binder for the n-8094. A year or so ago there was a major shortage of nitrile. I wonder if the major shortages of nitrile caused someone to start stamping out a different material that wasnt meant for that application. Interface publishes the data sheets online so easily comparable if you know the number of the gasket material.

I have a fun fact for you. The 4 door Malibu is actually the same wheelbase. I have a friend who purchased a 78 Malibu that had been wrecked in the front and bent the frame. He worked at a salvage yard and looked in the interchange manual to see what else he could find for a donor frame. And it said a 4 door was the same. Just so happens they had one. Used the frame and the front clip to get it back on the road. Love the videos . You are all doing a great job. Keep em coming. It’s my favorite thing to start my day

Seriously! When I used to go to the street races in the late 90's that was pretty much all everyone had, AND it was a LOT of fun!! If ya came with a 10 -11 second car, you were beating pretty much everything there. ...and anything faster raced at the track or came just to watch and hang out.. Just my humble opinion, but, I feel like the "fast" cars that are racing these no-prep/street events are really askin for trouble, running the way they do.

Good video- and love your channel! But take it easy on the “lawnmower” 302 lol. My 91 GT foxbody 5 speed with a stock bottom end (125k mile) 302 ran 8.0’s on motor with mph for 7.70’s. 9:1 compression, fuel injection (factory computer with a chip to eliminate rev limiter), pro Topline steel heads, Isky solid roller, cheap intake, etc. It was my version of what your building. Built the car on a budget. And that’s with the factory T5, and a 4.56 gear with completely stock suspension minus rear control arms. Car weight with me in it was a little over 3300lbs and had full interior, AC, cruise, power windows, etc. Street car that was a blast. It fits your theme of budget and simplicity and some of your viewers aren’t GM only die hards. Had to mention that as foxbody mustangs were the epitome of the drag racing renaissance back in the 80’s. Cheap, durable, and fast for the day. I get the GM love- just mentioning you have Mopar and Ford fans that are learning from your channel. Your hot rodding tricks work across the board. I have a buddy building a budget Regal with a 96 LT1/ 4l60 swap. I put him onto your channel 👍

Great work on the content Bill. That intake will light that small block up for sure. With the weight of the car and what you're trying to do with it, you may want to put a taller gear in it, like a 4.10 or 4.44, 4.56? It might like the upper side of the rpm range better with a single pane and spray. I had the same intake on my old 355 Camaro and had the same issues when it shifted. Ended up with 4.56 gear and 28's, it was like I added another 100 shot. 😁

I swapped to a Torker intake and it was like a completely different enigne. The low end torque gain was incredible and still pulled very hard to the 6500rpm. Looking forward to getting it to the track to see just how much I gained.

So my question is whats the inside of the intake runners look like?? And what's the inside of the combustion chamber on the heads look like??? And if its on the plugs, you can bet its worked its way down the cylinder walls and into the oil. And you know as well as I do, thats probably got the oil filter full of that crap. And rings and bearings would be my next concern. Good find Sir.

Glad you got it figured out I've been in a pinch back in the 70s made gasket out of corn flakes box did better than that it's crazy but I always tried to keep Mr gasket parts around when I needed them bought most of my stuff from stinger Sam's anyway never know anymore every one seems like has to mess with everything that's been fine for year's. I had a 80 Olds cutlass with stock hp 305 quad headers 411 posi with built 350 turbo I street raced very seldom got beat wish I still had it today was a lot of fun. But my 68 chevelle ss 427 4 gear 488s posi was the one hard to beat. Never had the money to have a real competitive race car but most of guy's I raced didn't either lol but we had a blast. Thanks for sharing love watchin ya'll. Uncle bucko got you good I knew he was gonna do that but still bout pissed myself laughin.

PERSEVERANCE! That is the key to figuring out and fixing issues. With these cars you can count on always running into some kind of issue that will require you to work through some kind of diagnostic approach. Eventually you will develop a method that works for you, but at the end of the day no matter what approach you take, you must stick with it.. work hard.. be diligent & in the end you will find yourself back at the track & doing what we all love most 🤘🏼

I had the same intake velocity problem with a Victor Jr. SBC until I put a 1 inch spacer under the carb. That cured all the problems.

A little off topic, but does that suburban have a soft spongy brake pedal? I’ve had several gmt400 and still have a 98 ecsb Z71. All of them had terrible feeling brakes. Recently upgraded master cylinder to the next gen (2002). Larger bore so moves more fluid with less stroke of pedal. Only one adapter needed for swap. Night and day difference. First time I’ve ever felt confident with the brakes in them trucks. Love the Malibu! I’ve also had several g-body car, still have an 84 cutlass with a 408 sbc that has been sitting for 12+years :(
