Former neo-Nazi removes swastika tattoos after unlikely friendship

- Colorado resident Michael Kent recently sat down at a tattoo parlor in Colorado Springs to have his swastikas covered up. Follow reporter Michael Koenigs @MikeOnABikeABC for more profile pieces.
Kent, a former neo-Nazi, credits an African-American parole officer named Tiffany Whittier with helping him to see beyond skin color and changing his views about white supremacy.
“If it wasn’t for her I would have seeped back into it,” said Kent. “I look at her as family.”
Whittier, 45, even inspired Kent, 38, to take down the Nazi flags he had hanging in his living room and replace them with smiley faces.
“I’m not here to judge him. That’s not my job to judge. My job is to be that positive person in someone’s life,” Whittier said.
Added Kent, “When you wake up and see a smiley face, you’re going to go to work and you’re going to smile.”

Kent now works full-time on a chicken farm in Colorado, where all his co-workers are Hispanic.
“Before all this, I wouldn’t work for anybody or with anybody that wasn’t white,” said Kent. “[Now] we have company parties, or they have quinceañeras, I’m the only white guy there!”
Redemption Ink, a national non-profit that offers free removals of hate-related tattoos, helped connect Kent with Fallen Heroes Tattoo in Colorado to begin the 15-hour process of covering his swastikas. The sterile environment is new to Kent who had his previous ink work done in prison.
“I’ve never, never, never been inside of a tattoo shop getting a professional tattoo,” he said.
Kent believes the painful process will help him move forward after spending years as a member of a violent skinhead group based in Arizona. As a father of two young children, Kent also hopes his children will see the world differently.
“I don’t want my kids to live the life I lived and live with hate,” said Kent. “I want my kids to know me for who I am now-a good father, a hard worker, and a good provider.”

Not always I grew up white in a predominately black area and I was treated horrible by my black peers. I was racist for years after that because I associated black people with violence. I'm lucky I have made many positive relationships with black people since and I have seen how we're all just people we're complex and make mistakes all of us.
@@andreasjansen1678 predominantly one race doesn't sound very diverse. that would be the case in which DEI courses can be provided to educate members of the predominant race about the minority race, and remind them that they too are humans. also to help the minority culture navigate life and adapt under an encroaching separate culture, as is commonly found in homogenous populations

@@Buffypoodle
That's unlikely. The most simple of cellular lifeforms do not compete to survive, they cooperate.
Racism is a defense mechanism that is caused by unexpected events leading to anxiety. It's the same thing with any other type of phobia.
A hundred thousand years ago, our ancestors learned that what they didn't understand, could be dangerous enough to kill them. So, an innate primal fear was evolved into us as a defense mechanism. The problem is that humans from a hundred thousand years ago weren't meant to, nor did they, live in a society. They lived mainly solitary tribal lives with small closely knitted communities.
We have evolved beyond that, and must continue to strive to evolve our primitive brains beyond petty racial discrimination.

It's not totally impossible, but we have to be willing to do it. At the end of the day, it's going to take real human interaction like this to make it happen. That lady could have asked to be removed from the case as his PO as soon as she saw his Nazi paraphernalia, and she would have been very much justified in doing so. But instead, she had the strength and courage, and professionalism to look past it, and he, to his credit had the courage to confront his own racism and let her into his life. He learned and grew as a person. What an incredible, and inspirational transformation.
haha go down to the south, everyone knows, trusts and gets along just fine. better than fine.
@@jamesstillgames I know some minorities that would kind of beg to differ, but I do like your positive attitude. Still a lot of deep-rooted Jim Crow type racism in some pockets. Remember, the south came up with that nonsense.
Perrye Golson yeah i know. there are good people though
@@jamesstillgames Yes, absolutely.
Theres a great Ted Talk by a guy who got into and out of neo-nazism. Its honestly sort of sad how people are so desperate to belong to a community that they end up becoming terrible people. This woman saw through 100% of that and im glad he's in a better place now.
People aren’t defined by their past they can learn and change for the better.
Anybody can change rocky iv
1 out of 1000. Thats not worth the risk
The way he faces the floor while he's with her
you can tell he's still ashamed of its old self and it takes a lot for a human being to do that, my most utmost respect.
I think he is also flustered from how much he adores his friend, its really adorable
ruclips.net/video/zvTu5OPwx7A/видео.html ...
Yea I noticed that as well. He almost seemed like he was just upset with himself. Glad he is doing better. Wishing him well + #loveandHUNDREDS
He probably does that because in prison it's smarter/safer not to make direct eye contact with anyone most of the time to avoid offending anyone.
Exactly so many ppl wanna hold onto their pride rather than admit when they're wrong. There's times to be proud (of the right things) and there are times to admit when you're wrong. Being able to distinguish the difference and carry out both of those things is not only part of being a mature adult but also part of being a decent human being.
It takes a real man/woman to admit their wrong and work hard toward change. God bless them both!
Yes.. and God bless everyone else in this word

Huge respect to this man. Erasing the hate, one step at a time.
Love > Hate
Evil vs Evil i guess.
Maybe he just needed love. I don’t mean like boyfriend/girlfriend love, but human-contact love
What a great story. The triumph of love over hate.
Don't we all!?
I think they were fooling around. 🤫
I think so too
This can only be achieved through love. Not calling people a problem.
I love the irony that he used to hate people because of their skin and now he is removing the hate that he had applied to his own skin.
I know right? 😂 It's hilarious, he's so weak!

I think it's like that with most people. Very few people are born evil. Hate is learned... and can be unlearned. People just need to be willing to talk to one another honestly.

Definitely. I would find it difficult as hell to have patience for a neo-Nazi.
@@lotsofuwuenergy3983 It can be rough, but you have to remember... It's a human being, and those animals are smart. They tend to believe an earnest example better than ridicule, too, and like positive feedback quite a lot. She came from a place of love, and that's an unfortunately rare perspective from people on the job or towards strangers.
Besides, I'm a creature of hate. The more I hate things, the more I want to solve the problem. I hate animals being abused, so I adopt difficult animals. I hate children going hungry, so I've donated a couple hundred to the food bank, a couple times. I hate how detached and dishonest people can be, so I try to be genuine, even if it's not happy, so that I may have a shot at planting a seed that will help the person grow their awareness. That last one causes problems, you see. There are some humans who have no *willingness* to change themselves, believing themselves to be "above that way of thinking", and *those* ones can't be helped. I want to solve my hatred, to be content, and I can't help someone who wants the drama of living in that world. But I am not bothered by hatefulness, it's my "normal" to feel that way. By empathizing with the emotion, and following the flow, I can cause *some* folks to think along new channels, like with "to hate something, you have to care about something. What is it you care about that makes you hate so much?"
The answer for me is you. All of you. I'm so angry and hateful because of how we, as a species, keep hurting eachother and destroying eachother's future world for personal petty gains. That means I'm angry at the people who are hurting the ones I love, and very nearly everyone is hurting someone, whether by an unwillingness to get involved, or an unwillingness to take a hit to stop someone else get floored by random life. So I hate everyone because I love everyone. It reminds me that I'm no better than anyone, not knowing any answers for certain, but I've put my heart into trying.
Well that's how you have to act when you take a career as law enforcement. She's a professional.
