I had really similar feelings, I don't know that it lived up to the wild hype (especially after the delay in release), but I did find it really enjoyable. I think it managed to have a lot of those YA bog standard elements, but still did interesting things with them.
I really really wanted to like this book... but I didn’t. My personal opinion is that if the first book in a series can’t carry itself, or have its own complete art, or makes sense and it’s own context but I’m not gonna give additional books a chance. And that is definitely what happened with this one. It felt clunky and I saw the promise but I don’t think this book series is for me, though I do think your review was really kind.
Ive read enough books that have turned it around after a debut I like to give things a chance at this point. I'll probably wait and see what the consensus is after book two is out
