I definitely teared up a few times during this book, less because of the death theme and more because of the 'I died before I realised my life was actually empty and I wasted it' theme. Gets me every time and I'm not going to look into or analyse that for myself at all, thank you very much. I heard TJ Klune talk fairly recently during an event at the British Library and I already enjoyed those books I've read, I warmed to him even more after that, he's a great speaker and very funny.

I finished this just yesterday - cried so many times throughout! I agree that Klune could have gone harder with the ending, although I think that was given to some extent with the bittersweet epilogue. Very much enjoyed this one!

I liked Under the Whispering Door but I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea and looking forward to the sequel.

Picked this for book club last fall. My friend really liked it but I didn't. Most of it didn't resonate with me emotionally and like you said, I thought the ending was wrapped up a little too neatly.
