Just watching this before trying made me a little more confident to repair my own DS. I was scared to mess anything up but you make it all so simple that I'm definitely going to replace the buttons myself now
If you can't get the replacements, just wash the rubber parts with dish soap, dry them up real good then use a qtip and alcohol to clean the black dots, if you do this you'll also need to clean the metal contacts with qtip and alcohol, it worked for me, now the buttons work perfectly.
Wonderful video, THANK YOU. I just replaced the rubber backings on my Nintendo DS and it worked out fine. Everything was perfectly explained with no surprises. To be on the safe side, hold the trigger buttons so it does not fly out when removing the bottom shell. All the screws are indeed different so you need to carefully track which screws belong where. I used tape and labeled each screw so each one goes back exactly in the right place. I used the LedLabz pads for the DS that I got on eBay. I don't know if it's better than the cheaper ones from China but the D-pads and buttons feel like the way it did when I got my DS ten years ago. I got the tri-wing screwdriver on Amazon (the one with the red handle labeled 360 x50 BEST) was good. I got the philips #00 screwdriver as a set at the 99 Cents Only store. It helps to use a little gaffer tape (or duct tape that is not too sticky) to keep the trigger buttons in place when working to secure the tension spring. Also, a little scotch tape to keep the volume button in the right place when securing the bottom shell on the unit also helps. And of course, take your time with this project.
Awesome and easy-to-follow guide ! Just a heads-up to anyone following this. Make sure your volume and power slider lines up before you screw it all back together or you'll end up having to open it back up again... Like I did lol. P.s My JP DS was also missing the same screw at 1:36. Odd.
@@TheNerdLair Just a heads up, the screw isn't missing, it is one of the screws that you take out underneath the battery before you open up the case fully, it isn't actually holding the case in place but is exposed once you remove the battery.
That's what I thought at first, best thing to do is to find a cheap either broken or just used console or handheld and open that thing up and see what makes it tick :) my first attempt at something like this was my GBC front light mod I did. It really ignites a flame of sorts
Amazing! I just replaced the rubbers for my DSs and it works like a charm! I had to do it over like three times because I kept forgetting buttons when putting it back together lol. Thanks so much, this was easy to follow and just what I needed!
Not quite what I was looking for, but this helps. I just recently picked up a black DS Lite, and I want to customize the buttons a bit with a little color, but they seem to be kind of hard to find...
I had a question that ultimately i figured out, but for anyone wondering, You can use a "#2.0 Y" screwdriver and a "#1.5 Phillips" screwdriver, in some forums says that you need a "#0 Y" and a "#00 Phillips" but for me, the size 0Y was imposible to find (in my country) the smallest was a #1 but came in a somewhat expensive set, so i got a $2 set that came with a #2.0 Y and worked just fine, i wasn't overly careful or anything, just used it normally. Also thanks for the video!!! Now my Ds is good as new!!!
Love the video! My left speaker in my ds lite isn't working anymore so now all my pokemon and its moves are basically silent. How can I go about fixing/repairing this myself?
Hmmm with replacing the speaker I should just be a simple solder job but I have yet to do it myself, can't be too difficult :) thanks for watching and commenting hope this video helped a little
Thanks for the tutorial! My A button is totally fixed now and not sunken in. It seems that my Nintendo profile was reset tho. I had to set up a new profile when I turned the device back on. Is that common?
@@TheNerdLair It’s all good! I thought it was because the battery gets disconnected. Games still save and load fine so that’s all that matters (: Thanks!
Bout to start doing this for myself! A button is finally starting to wear down. Looks like I played too much Pokemon lol. Any tips on which screwdrivers to get/if there's a bundle or something? Just want to make sure I get the right ones.
Definitely! You can get a set on Amazon, one set I use now comes with 30 different screw heads and a nice little handle for them in one case. The brand I use is called "E-Durable"
@@TheNerdLair would that be better than getting 100 different screwdrivers? lol that kind of answers itself. but I would like to be able to open apple devices and nintendo devices
after replacement is your button make the clicking sound when being pressed like the original? I replaced mine but now the clicking sound is no more, it feels like pressing on a rubber now. It works though, but not comfortable
The LED light on my ds lite, doesn’t show green when I turn it on. It shows red, to show when it needs charging, and it shows orange, when it’s charging. But it doesn’t show green when I turn it on but it shows all the other colours. Do you know what I mean? How can I fix this? Great video btw
What do you do if you break one of the tabs for the trigger springs? My left trigger one broke trying to put the trigger spring in between the the two posts
For anyone who lost the metal piece for the triggers you can use a tooth pick as it's about the same width, I did this after I lost mine and noticed a lump under the screen turns out the metal bit got under there
Hi! I am trying to fix the B button on a DSi. It simply stopped recognizing the input. I have opened it and noticed that the B button metal pad is pretty dark, almost burnt-like. The other buttons still have that golden color on their metal pads. I cleaned them all well with IPA but no luck (the darkened color on the B button remains). Any other tips on what the issue might be? Anything else to do/check? Thanks.
Hmmm it's possible that the contact for that button might be burnt out and that would require a whole new contact point for that button, not 100% sure though but if that's the case you might need to replace that circuit which is beyond my scope of knowledge. I wish I could help more friend
The buttons themselves you just need to order some on Amazon, they are cheap. As for the 3DS it is kinda different and I wouldn't use this video as a guide for that.
That usually comes from the rubber backing being worn down and slip on the crease. So when you push it down it has less of a bounce back when pressed of that makes sense.
I love videos like this. I've had to replace rubber backings on controllers and videos like this have helped. Hey Sean, have you gotten my messages on Twitter yet?
Thank you for the vid! Apparently my DS never had the spring for the trigger buttons... And also, my volume doesnt work anymore :( Probably due to me using the powerslider in the volume instead of the actual volume slider (mixed them up) and trying to force the shell in and now no volume rip But the A-buttons fixed haha
@@TheNerdLair Tried removing all of it and I done ripped the ribbon cable as I was trying to separate the top from the bottom. Just wouldn't fit through the tube haha :P
@@TheNerdLair Yep! Either a replacement top screen or just buy a new one. Probably saying RIP to the Palkida/Dialga edition :( Gonna buy a "new" any-color one from ebay! xD
no, because sometimes your sweat from your fingers dry to the logical board, so you have to clean it, but Never ever do you use sand paper, NEVER, just some isopropilic alcochol is ok
@@TheNerdLair Ended up having to drill it out. Was able to get motherboard out. I did slightly damage the motherboard around the area of the screw but it seems to still function normally thus far. Just ordered those button pads the d-pad one was torn. Also ordered some new housing to maybe fix the hinge in the future.

If the buttons respond, but doesn't click, is it because of the backings or something else?
I think that it would be the rubber backings like in this video that might need to be replaced as they become soft over time.
