I think that is truly the ultimate DS lite. The one suggestion I have about making the DS lite better would be a USB C charging port. that is an amazing DS.
I've opened up my DS Lite a couple of times to clean the shoulder button contacts, but it was interesting to see what would be involved to do a full case swap. You were brave adding all the sticky rubber caps on before switching on and testing!

Great video! Although I do have one suggestion. On your R4 Gold Pro, I would suggest installing YSMenu as opposed to the stock kernel. This is because the stock kernel is slower, uglier, and it has a timebomb installed (when the DS reaches a certain date, the kernel will become useless) Installing YSMenu can solve all of these problems and it's a much better overall experience
Do all the R4s have the timebomb? I kinda liked the UI on the stock firmware, along with access to Moonshell and Morning Timer, but I didn't like the incompatibility issues with certain games.
@@chopsmccartney6786 YSMenu is far superior when it comes to game compatibility, and nearly all R4 cards that are produced today have timebombs. If you really want the stock UI you can set the clock of the DS back several years, though this may still trigger it. Regardless you’re still better off using YSMenu
Nice one ds lite is my fav handheld. A couple add-ons from modder: R4 has timebomb so acecard+ezflash is the best combo. You can use ysmenu with an R4 if you want to disable the timebomb. Also you did not check the mic, they are mostly faulty in my experience. You can use mini usb cable to charge ds lites. Some mini usb cables are tight but there are some fit like a glove, or if you are into more action you change the charge port with female mini usb. If you are feint hearted buy a usb to ds lite cable without hard modding so you dont have to carry the power brick. Lastly I slapped a 3200 mah battery to my dsl for extended usage, these little devices can utilize any 3.7 v battery. Thanks for reminding me the happy time i spent modding and playing this handheld...

still had a charge, doesnt suprise me the batteries in them are fantastic i hardly ever have to charge mine shame they dont make handhelds with good battery power anymore
I read that the battery life in modern handhelds is shorter than the DS Lite's due to the amount of hardware in it relying on the battery power. The wireless functions in particular suck the life out of the battery, I think. I wish the 3DS and the Switch had the battery life the Lite had.
Some times they reuse battery models between devices for example the pro controllers for the switch and Wii U use the same battery found in the 3DS and 2DS
Dude, that battery is no joke. I just pulled my DS Lite out of a storage bin. Its been there for the better part of 2 years, maybe 3. Frigging thing still has a full charge.
I did buy one of those R4 carts a few years ago but not because I emulate games. You can backup your GBA saves on it, and with pokemon you can put your save data on an emulator and inject the mystery gift events onto it and then put it back on the cartridge and you have 100% legitimate event pokemon from the early 2000s.
Dope video, dope DS. I really like the dark smoky case. I have a clear one right now. I have a GBAccelerator DS coming in the mail for my next revision.
Duuuude, that's kinda unreal youtube recommended this to me right now - I just ordered the same black shell, flashcart, screen replacement to refurb a badly used DS with broken top screen. Thought for a while to make a gameboy macro, but almost all of the examples found online look ugly unless you either spend a couple of days to sand/sculpt/paint your mod or buy a separate faceplate for five times the price of what I paid for my used console. Totally using the vid as my tutorial :)
Great stuff! I see I am not the only one who keeps a DS Lite around because it can hold two flashcards. Too many good games on the GBA to not have this model as a standby even though I have DSi XL _and_ a 3DS XL.
If you have a slot 1 flashcart, you can use gameyob or lameboy to play gb and gbc games, and yiu can play some gba games using gbarunner2 without any device in slot 2

I wonder if any of these sellers on ebay that have sold these things for 15 to 30 bucks thinking that they were broken only for a simple clean to fully restore it, ever found out and was pissed they lowballed themselves. Now obviously im not talking about this ds in the video as it did have a busted top screen but surprisingly there are a lot of these where the only issues are cosmetic damage but the system itself is completely fine being sold for as cheap.
I have taken apart a few DS lites so at this point I can probably take them apart with my eyes closed and this might actually be a project I want to do in the future. I mean I'm actually a trained and licensed electronics technician that is specialized in small electronics mostly so this is kind of my thing. I also have a spare DS lite because I'm a hoarder.
I don't know what curse did Nintendo used for their DS until 3DS series(not really long for 3DS compared to DS). The battery seems last forever for years if not turned on(and still got more than half % if fully charged). I mean some devices like phone, camera and other stuffs, if you turned off and turned on again maybe few weeks. It will be dead or at least low charge.
Ive been asking about this for months. I am not the biggest fan of the TFT, especially for GBA games or a Macro build. Hopefully someone can alter the IPS screen cables used for GBA and use them in a DSL
The only replacement screens are actually worse than the original. Well they do work but the color temperature doesn´t 100% fit the touchscreen´s temperature and the viewing angles are not so great. But they aren´t too bad aswell, but only recommend it if you smashed your screen or if it has a broken flex cable like in my case. My replacement screen also got a dead pixel, so it´s not super quality.
Theoretically the true ultimate ds lite would be 2 custom XL screens, one bottom and one at the top, and to just add too it it would probably use BRZ to smoothen all the pixels out, at that point it would probably become the ultimate ds lite! I almost wanna try it, converting a dsi xl's top screen into a ds lite screen using some pin converter (as the ds lite has 43 pins and the dsi xl has 45) Though i bet it would almost be impossible sadly...
Then, the ultimate DS (for you) would be a DSi XL. It has IPS XL screens, better CPU and ot is easly moddable via the SD card. The only thing that the Lite does better are the transparent third party cases and GBA support. And you can easly run GBA games using GBArunner. It's not perfect, but for games that work, it's almost 100%
