- This video was shot on Sunday, March 19th, 2023. We attempted to go to Horseshoe Reservoir to film a water release occurring there, but the road was closed. It had been blockaded by authorities due to flooding and the roads being washed out. There were actually some people who had their travel trailers, RVs, and other vehicles stranded on the other side of the flooding. According to authorities, the road to Horseshoe will likely remain closed for the remainder of calendar year 2023.
So instead of filming Horseshoe, we went to Bartlett Lake instead. Low and behold Salt River Project (SRP) was releasing water from Bartlett Dam too, so I was able to capture some pretty cool footage of the water flowing out from the dam. I was also able to capture a motorcycle rally that arrived in the parking lot where we were staged. Additionally we drove up the north road to the Yellow Cliffs, where I got some good shots as well.
As you'll see in this video, the lake was quite muddy, which is why the water looks very brown. No amount of color grading was going to fix that. The muddy water is due to build-up of sediment over time that gets washed downstream from Horseshoe with rising water levels and large water releases.
Also while we were on location, there just happened to be a sport bike motorcycle club that showed up. Looked like they were having a rally. It was kind of a cool spontaneous opportunity, so I filmed their arrival too.

Fantastic and beautiful area. I was born in Mesa Arizona and lived in the Tempe area for 35 years. The Bartlett Lake and larger Verde River area has incredible wildlife abundance and natural beauty.
The area is also remarkable at night. I’m a longtime amateur astronomer, and the dark clear skies make the Bartlett lake area very good for stargazing. I’ve spent many wonderful and late nights in the upper paved parking lot area just above Bartlett Lake,
viewing with my telescope. It was magic….
I agree. I have lived in Arizona since 1972. It's my home. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. ❤
Great shots. You really get close.
Mj, thank you. ❤
Great shots and editing. Kudos
Thank you. ❤
Nice!!!!
Thank you. 🙂
My Drone is the Air S2 also.... I have 2 of them and one Typhoon H, 6 propper. Follows me while tracking GPS around my neck. Totally unlike Tracking, that does not work well at all+
Cool
Thank you.
Great Footage
Thank you. 🙂
Quite a water level change. Nice.
Beautiful views and shots and video. @5:44 Go go go…. Matt. Lol. Pretty dam cool. Loved those shots over the water rushing.
LOL Thank you, Chris. 🙂❤
I shot my video of Horseshoe dam on the 18th of March. cool! Great minds think alike.
Sounds like we just missed each other then. The road to Horseshoe was closed that Sunday when I went out there.
Beautiful - Subscribed.
Thank you. 🙂

Damn, making me homesick. Glad AZ is finally getting wet.
Yes, the rain is always welcome here in Arizona.
Just visited Bartlett Lake yesterday 3/25 and it was amazing. There is a lot of water charged in the Arizona river systems. Heading up to our property at 7400 feet in the Bradshaws just south of Prescott. As of 3 weeks ago we still had 54” of snow pack on our property with drifts in excess of 80”. Curious to see what’s left when we get there.
Mark, wow! That's a lot of snow. I was just out at the Salt River Recreation area today filming more drone vids. The weather was awesome, and there were a lot of people out enjoying the area. A lot of the downstream recreation areas were closed, but there were still some that were open. Keep your eyes peeled for my future video from this area.
@@mattsarizonaaerials yes it is! It’s been that deep off and on since basically Early February. We snowshoed in the second time. Te snow is extremely heavy and so full of water. Our slope feeds Lynx creek that flows into Lynx Lake and then out into Big Bug creek. So nice to see this amount of water locked up in the high country.
How long does it take for the sediment to settle so the brown goes away? Anyone know
@@Truth-Be-Told-USA, I don't know. I would imagine that as long as the water continues to flow from Horseshoe upstream, then the sediment will continue to flow into Bartlett, and brown will continue to show. Once they stop the water release from Horseshoe, I would guess the water could finally begin to settle in Bartlett, and the brown sediment will eventually subside. 🤷♂
Cool video what is the soundtrack please
Neil, thank you. I used multiple tracks pulled from artlist.io for this video. I have updated my description to include the track list.
When I left Horseshoe dam on Saturday the 18th I was stopped by the Sheriff, and givin a warning for trespassing. So were 10 others.
😯
Are all of the lakes in AZ releasing water from all the snowpack? Glad the'yre all full, we needed that. Now only if Powell and Mead can have the same outcome..
Jay, I don't think that all of the dams are releasing water at the same time. There's a process in place to ensure that water releases are done in a systematic way. Don't ask me what that process is though. 🙂🤷
@@mattsarizonaaerials What's the process? Lol I'm just messing around. I didn't necessarily mean all at the same time , more just wondering if they're all so full that they have to release water... I saw on the news they're planning to build up the dam at Bartlett, going to be a long time if they get the go ahead.
@@jay_wright The discussions about expanding Bartlett's capacity are definitely happening. I think you are probably correct about the timeline to actually get that done though. At least ten years, if not more.
@@mattsarizonaaerials They said something about 15 years, which sounds short and long at the same time.. I'm glad to see all the water here. I'm not very hopeful that it will stay for very long though :(
The Colorado River system is more based off of poor management between 6 states and Mexico but the majority (60%) is California and they don't want to cut water.
But it goes deeper into the shutdown of coal plants like the plant in Laughlin Nevada and the Navajo Generating Station in page both were feed by the Black Mesa mine now shutdown. With the coal plants shutdown the more the grid depend on hydropower that means releasing more water to feed the turbines to keep up on the demand of electricity.
At 12:59 did you shoot in Slow mo or just slow it down in post?
nice video.
Lance, I just slowed it down in post. The raw footage was shot in 4k at 60fps with my Air2S using an ND32 filter and auto settings.
If only we had built more dams years.
Tim, right?
Environmentalists won't allow it.
@@bubbasizemore4556 You beat me to it with your comment.
Very beautiful area and Lake. I've never seen this Lake before. The yellowish colored rock 🪨 and beautiful colors in the area are remarkable. 😍 It was nice to see that large group of Hell's Angels going to enjoy the area ; as long as they don't cause trouble. 🤪 Is the water 💦 always so muddy looking ❓
Don, the lake is that muddy because of all of the sediment buildup upstream at the higher lake, known as Horseshoe Reservoir. It gets filled up with sediment, and then when the water is released, it flows downstream into Bartlett, causing all of that muddy looking water.
Hells angels don’t ride sport bikes.
@@jilldavidaon9686 🤣 I wasn't going to call him out on that comment. 🤣🤷♂
Release the Kraken.
T Price, right?! 🤣👍
Nice video but the free music is on soooo many other videos on RUclips I just couldn't watch any more. Yes, I know I could just turn the sound down.
🤣👍 Yeah, I hear that. You are so spot on, and thank you for viewing and commenting. I see so many other videos on the internet with the same music too. I have even seen commercials on network television that use the same music. By the way, it isn't free though. It's a paid subscription through a stock music provider (artlist.io), but I get what you're saying. Yeah, I suppose you could just turn the sound down too. I'm sorry you tuned out early due to the music though. What would you suggest I do differently to keep more viewers tuned in for longer?
@@mattsarizonaaerials I am not an expert on these things. I do watch a lot of nature related videos. Most of the time I just like the hear commentary from the videographer or silence, actually I enjoy the sounds picked up by the drone.
@lynntaubeneck7383, I have actually thought about adding narration to my videos. Your suggestion is duly noted, and I may actually try doing that in my future videos. I agree it would add a little more "substance" to my productions. Thank you so much for your viewership and feedback. ❤
Can you use your drone everywhere? How do I know if it's legal to use a drone in a city or anywhere?
Thank you for the question. If you plan on using a drone for anything other than purely recreational purposes, I would highly recommend that you obtain your FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification. Having your Part 107 means that you have studied, and understand all of the rules associated with flying a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS), as well as where you can and can not fly. Pilot Institute (pilotinstitute.com/) and Drone Pro Academy (www.youtube.com/@CineChopper) are great resources for study material associated with this endeavor. The FAA (www.faa.gov/uas and faadronezone-access.faa.gov/#/) also has a lot of great information. Additionally, there are numerous mobile apps that you can download and use from your mobile device to aid you in determining where you can fly, as well as help you obtain the necessary permissions to do so, depending on what airspace you intend to fly in. I use Air Control (formerly Aloft - www.aloft.ai/air-control/) for requesting permission to fly in controlled airspace. In the case of this particular video, there are a few rules that need to be followed, but for the most part, this was an easy flight relative to any restrictions. I hope this helps. 🙂
@@mattsarizonaaerials Whoau, thank you so much for your quick response with all the details!😊👍
I will subscribe to your channel only because you gave me so much info on permission to use a drone, I will have to read all the info. Thank you ❤
@@of4us You are very welcome. Good luck with your future drone endeavors. 👍
Beautiful country. You spend a lot of your videos trying to create some dramatic cinematic effect. Maybe focus more on showing the subject and secret and less on trying to be dramatic.
Jeeper P, thank you for your comment. You are correct about me going for that dramatic effect. I suppose what I am really attempting is to show the grandeur of whatever scenery I am filming. Trying to capture and truly convey the epic scope of the landscape I am filming is what I am trying to achieve. If I understand your critique accurately, it sounds like you are suggesting I pick a specific subject on which to focus, and I would agree with that. I am still learning a lot though, and I make adjustments with each video I produce. I will take your comments to heart and see what I can do going forward. Thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment on my videos. ❤🙂
Great aerials but annoying music !
